Cabaret

(continued from page 53)

Michael York and Joel Grey. The film received eight Academy awards, including Best Director, Best Actress (Minnelli), Best Supporting Actor (Grey) and Best Cinematography. The film is said to be loosely based on the original because only a few numbers from the stage score were used. However, Kander and Ebb wrote new songs. Still, the musical numbers in the film are confined to the stage of the cabaret and the beer garden, rather than being heard throughout the entire film, and only the two main characters sing. Other significant differences include the Americanization of the character of Sally Bowles to accommodate Minnelli, the change in the character of Cliff Bradshaw, who is named Brian Roberts and made British and bisexual, the addition of some new characters and the cutting of others. “It’s a completely different show. Sally is more vulnerable and indecisive in the Broadway production,” said Disher. The upcoming show at SCC will feature the 1987 revival script and score, which includes the songs “Willkommen,” “Don’t Tell Mama,” “Two Ladies,” “Sitting Pretty/Money,” and several others. “I would like to think I treated a piece of history honorably and that the cabaret numbers have the degree of social commentary that will make people think,” said Disher, who directed a production of the musical nine years ago at Southampton College. For this performance, rather than stick to the earlier show, he re-choreographed the entire show to fit the performers. “When you have the rare opportunity to revisit a production for a second time like I did, you have to think to yourself, how can I make this better?” he said The production will star Erin McKenna as Sally Bowles, Jack Seabury as Emcee, Peter Connolly as Clifford Bradshaw, R. Kathryn Butterfield as Fraulein Schneider, Daniel Becker as Herr Schultz, Thomas Mistler as Ernst Ludwig and Rebecca Edana as Fraulein Kost. The ensemble (boys and girls of The Kit Kat Klub) includes Anita Boyer, Vincent Carbone, Bethany Dellapolla, Adam Fronc, Shannon Gilson, Kasia Klimiuk, Christine Martinez, Edward Martinez, Thomas Pandolfo, Robert Peterson, Matthew Petrucci, Ken Rowland and Sophie Vanier. Disher described the cast and crew as a mix of seasoned performers and people who want to learn to perform. Four of the crew, including his assistant and lighting director, had worked with him on the SHC production. The theatre at SCC will be set up to mimick the Kit Kat Club, with the first three rows consisting of tables, which are incorporated into the show as part of the cabaret. Disher said this was the most difficult part of the production. He added, “It’s a risky gamble.” Performances begin July 22, and showtimes will be Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 5 p.m., at The Levitas Center for the Arts, 25 Pond Ln., Southhampton. Tickets $25/$12 (students under 21 with ID). Table seating is available for $35. Call 631-287-4377 or visit scc-arts.org.
