Then it started to drizzle again. “Is it going to storm soon?” I asked. “I’ll check my iPhone,” he said. “It takes a little while.” I walked my partner to the car, then returned to the beach. The lifeguard said there was a 40% chance of rain until 3, then it would be 70%. We both sighed and looked out onto the horizon. A wall of blackness was just barely to the west. “So what’s that?” I asked. “Do you think it will stay offshore?” “It might,” he said. I went back toward our outpost, ready to gather up the chairs and umbrellas. The black wall had moved substantially to the east. It was still sunny on the beach, then it started to drizzle. Then it started to pour. A deluge. We heard one clap of thunder.

I ran to my stuff. Janet had put everything under umbrellas. The boys were still crabbing so we called them over. This was at about 11:00. “Let’s see what happens,” she said. We decided we’d stay unless the thunder started, or the rain didn’t stop. But after about five minutes it was over. Cloudy for a few minutes, then the sun began to break out, from west to east. The next several hours were gorgeous. But we couldn’t go in the water because of the rough surf and bluefish. As I watched a wave break, bluefish fell straight down from the crest. It was like watching salmon swim upstream. They were everywhere. A fisherman reeled one in that was easily 3-feet long. No one was in the water except a dozen or so intrepid surfers. As one sloshed out of the water, he told us he felt the front of his foot—all five toes—in something’s mouth. As he tried to hurry back on to his board, he said a bluefish flopped on and then off. We left at about 1:00. It was still beautiful, but Chaa’s food van hadn’t shown up and we were hungry. We went to Janet’s house which is about equidistant between Sagg Main and Sag Harbor, to eat and swim. At 1:30 my partner called to see where I was. “Swimming at Janet’s,” I said. “How can you be swimming?” she said. “It’s pouring.” In Sag Harbor it was pouring. But not three miles away where I was. We drove back to North Haven. Our electricians from TriTech were working in the backyard. The sun was out. “How are you?” I asked one of them. He laughed. “I’m hot, cold, soaking wet from rain, baking in the sun…” By then it was about 2:30. As he spoke, it clouded over. Large drops plopped down on us. Then the floodgates opened and it poured for about 20 minutes. Then sun. We drove to Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center that night to hear Joan Armatrading. During the concert, it rained cats and dogs. At least it wasn’t bluefish.
