Cars

(continued from previous page)

stop without braking. WHERE in the Hamptons can you do this? Montauk Highway in August?...I don’t think so! So the car must be taken onto Sunrise Highway, and even then it can be difficult to achieve such specific perimeters. It can be a huge inconvenience for a car owner to relinquish their vehicle to a repair shop to go through this tedious process. It can take hours to achieve. You can end up leaving a repair shop with a much heftier bill than the originally intended $37 inspection sticker. Not to mention the liability created – a repair technician is driving your shiny new ride on the roads of the Hamptons and a rock pops up from the tire of the car in front of you (leftover from our last brutal winter) or a rim gets bent due to our many pot holes – Hey Wainscott, I’m talking about you! The solution? As vehicle technology evolves, so does the testing process, but not quickly enough. The best you may be able to do with respect to the inspection process, is try to avoid having your inspection held up by some tedious, insignificant fault. If your check engine light comes on, do not wait until your annual inspection to get your vehicle repaired. Not only will it help clean the air, but it could save you a lot of time, as well as future repair and fuel costs. Refer to your owner’s manual to see if your car has a readiness monitor check. Some newer model vehicles have this function programmed in, which enables you to check your vehicle’s monitors before an inspection. Inspect your vehicle early! Do not wait until the end of the month to get your annual inspection. As you can see, the inspection process can be simple and straightforward or quite complicated and time-consuming. Now that you know the facts, you can refrain from yelling at your technician when you don’t escape the repair shop with a simple $37 bill.

Family Event

Party at Ziggy’s for EcoWalk The whole family is welcomed to attend a fun fundraiser for EcoWalk, an exciting plan to transform the path between Sag Harbor Elementary and Pierson High School into a new educational walkway with native landscaping that will incorporate an outdoor classroom, lunch area, “edible garden” and five unique ecosystems. The location serves as a reminder of community unity and the path the children will take as they grow, and will wrap around the existing greenhouse. The self-sustaining classroom, powered by solar panels, will be created by community labor, with community money, for the community’s children. The Kick Off Party and Fundraising event is this Thursday, June 17, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Ziggy’s restaurant, Bridge/Sag Tpk. in Bridgehampton. Food, beer, wine, music and an auction. Suggested donation: $20. Tickets: 631-987-8509 or terradesign.com.
