Welcome to the November/December edition of the FSC iMag. I'm writing this in mid-October, and we really need some rain, so hopefully by the time you're reading this, it's arrived and everything is nice and green. A spectacular natural phenomenon that happens during spring is the southern migration of whales past the Far South Coast. Travelling slowly with their calves, several species of whales feed and play as they head down to Antarctica for the summer. There are numerous local whale watching tours that will deliver an experience you'll never forget. The Eden Whale Festival, held on 3rd - 5th November is an annual celebration of Eden and its connection to the whales. More information on pages 10 and 11. Still on the water, the Merimbula Classic is on in November - it's the world's longest running event of its kind! Wave sailing, kite surfing and stand up paddling will be happening off Merimbula's beaches - make sure you check out the spectacular sights over the weekend. Check out page 17 to find out more. For thrills of a different kind, head to Moruya for the South Coast Nationals, a celebration of hot rods, street machines, drag cars, vintage, motorbikes and big rigs. There's also an Automotive Trade & Careers Expo for anyone interested in working in the industry. See page 47 for details. To enjoy life at a slower pace, make sure you visit Narooma on the weekend of November 17 - 19 for the spectacular Narooma BoatsAfloat, a celebration of all types of timber boats. It truly is an amazing sight when these beautiful boats pass under the bridge at Narooma for their Grand Parade. Our What's On feature on pages 22 - 23 has all the details.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. Today Eden is famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. It's a great place to go on a whale-watching cruise, or even spot whales from headlands or beaches. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. For the adventurous, The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

Happy 21st birthday to the Eden Whale Festival! If you want to get up close to whales, then there is no better place to be in Australia than Eden on the Sapphire Coast of NSW in Spring. The whales can be seen in large numbers in the town’s stunning Twofold Bay, whether you are in a boat or, indeed, just from the shore ... And while they frolic, feed and rest, the residents are busily putting on Australia’s premier whale celebration. For one weekend each year, the whales are celebrated along with the port's rich maritime and whaling history and stunning coastal wilderness. Eden Whale Festival celebrates its 21st year in 2017 with another exciting and fun filled program of events and entertainment. With the official opening of the Whale Festival on Friday 3rd November, the festival continues with its colourful parade on Saturday morning. The Rag Tag Fleet exhibition at Eden Killer Whale Museum and those classed by the defence force as medically unfit to take the helm. Charged with taking ammunition, supplies and troops through mostly unchartered waterways, these civilians faced enemy fire just the same as regular defence forces. However it is only within the last decade that their contribution to the American and Australian war effort has been officially recognised. Eden Killer Whale Museum’s latest exhibition The Rag Tag Fleet commemorates the 75th anniversary of the formation of this unusual fleet of ships, and remembers the men from the South Coast of NSW who served on them. The Rag Tag Fleet is on display at Eden Killer Whale Museum from 5th June 2017 – 4th February 2018. www.killerwhalemuseum.com.au

The Rag Tag Fleet was a phrase penned by Ladislaw Reday, one of a group of Americans who came to Australia in 1942 as part of the Mission X team. With the Japanese defeating US forces in the Philippines, the next strategy was to drive Japanese forces out of New Guinea, and without an available fleet at hand, the Rag Tag Fleet was born. The Mission X team scoured Australia’s eastern seaboard and New Zealand inspecting and procuring an unlikely fleet of attack vessels for the US Army. Known as the US Small Ships Section, they included wooden trawlers, scows, sailing craft and even a paddle-wheeler. While a fleet was beginning to be assembled, there was the realisation that crew were needed. Those fit enough were already engaged in the war, so it was left to the young, the old

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafés, restaurants, retailers, designers, pubs, a bakery, coffee roastery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an oldfashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring the floodplain and former racecourse. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.

Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and an array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the

region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkeling, surfing, cycling, taking a scenic flight, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of goods every year.

StunningTathra Things to See & Do Get up close to birds at On The Perch's walk-through aviaries Try mountain biking on the trails around Tathra Check out all the cafes and restaurants in town Enjoy a walk or bike ride from Tathra to the Bega River at Mogareeka VISITOR INFORMATION Tathra Beach Supermarket 1/65 Andy Poole Dr, Tathra www.tathratourism.com.au

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. The Wharf was damaged during an East Coast Low that hit the region in 2016, but with repairs completed, the Wharf has resumed its role as a favourite fishing spot for visitors and locals alike.

Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is about 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafĂŠs and restaurants. Make sure you have a coffee at Cliff Place in Beach St at the top of town, to really appreciate Tathra's spectacular ocean views. Extensive renovations at The Tathra Hotel are due to be completed by spring 2017. www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Intriguing Cobargo Things to See & Do Follow the Cobargo Village Historic Walk and listen to the Audio Tour Enjoy a picnic on the banks of the Narira River Explore nearby Wadbilliga National Park

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’.

Today the picturesque historic village of Cobargo is more than a working village; it's a creative, vibrant place that reflects the diverse, talented locals. Cobargo's Laneway Markets are an initiative of Cobargo Creators and happen every Saturday from 9am till 1pm. Enjoy the friendly Cobargo vibe whilst browsing fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There’s also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker to entertain. On the 1st Saturday of the month there is also a car boot sale held in conjunction with the market. Cobargo still has its old favourites like the unique Bangles Pottery shop, where the owner throws pots in the front window, and South Coast Leather, where the scent of leather wafts from the door. Twig & Feather is also full of scented delights, with hand-made candles and a unique range of homewares, kitchenware and stationery. www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

CharmingTilba Things to See & Do Go for a hike up Gulaga Mountain Try fishing at Mystery Bay Explore the fascinating shops Visit the historic ABC Cheese Factory Drop in to the Dromedary Hotel

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation, particularly Yuin women. Gulaga is cloaked with an amazing rainforest around its peak and it's well worth hiking to the top for spectacular views (approx. 5 hours). Access the walking track from the rear of Pam's Store in Tilba Tilba.

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as oldfashioned stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Leatherwork, art studios, woodwork, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques, giftware, as well as a bakery and a pub are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. At the ABC Cheese Factory there's South Coast Cheeses made on the premises, and Real Tilba Milk, made from local jersey cows. Passionfish - A Traveller's Tale Dear iMag readers, We could rave on about the beauty and serenity that embraces the Central Tilba landscape, it's location, the history, the quirky village...but we think this visitor's TripAdvisor review will give you some insight. Kylie and Jason, owners of Passionfish, Central Tilba "My husband and I were taking a two week tour for our honeymoon when we dropped into Tilba. As we wandered through the town we came across Passionfish and I was immediately drawn in by the most amazing smell! We had been told by friends in Sydney that we had to visit the store and I can see why! They hand make all of their candles using soy wax which is fantastic. I was in love with a particular fragrance of soy candle but liked a different colour to match my dĂŠcor and it was absolutely no problem. I could order any fragrance in any colour! Beautiful and unique ideas for your home will keep you drooling as you wander around the shop, I did not want to leave! They also had some really pretty jewellery which my husband surprised me with! The owners are just so lovely and we had a really memorable experience in this pretty little town. We would definitely recommend anyone passing through to stop and take a look at Passionfish, I absolutely guarantee you will love this beautiful town and you will definitely take home something

from this amazing little store. Best of all if you fall in love with a product, chances are you can order it and have it sent to you, but nothing beats the experience of seeing this store in person if you get the chance :)" Visited October '14 www.passionfish.com.au
