From The Editor Welcome to the March/April edition of the Far South Coast iMag. Well, what a roller-coaster ride the last two months have been. After almost six weeks of fires to the north, south and west of the region, flooding rains have largely extinguished them, much to everyone's relief. Tanks, dams, rivers and streams are full and life is returning to a new 'normal'. These trying times have really demonstrated that our coastal and rural communities are a pretty resilient bunch, and businesses are up, running and more than ready to welcome visitors to our beautiful region. There's an awful lot that's unburnt, especially our gorgeous beaches. Merimbula's EAT Festival on March 6 - 8 is a fantastic way to experience the culinary delights of the region, with inspired dishes featuring local produce a focus. See pages 12 - 13. SCULPTURE Bermagui returns in March, bringing exceptional sculptural pieces to Bermagui's spectacular headlands, plus artist talks, 'Poetry Meets Sculpture' and more. Head to page 27 for more information. The Tilba Festival is a highlight of Easter on the Far South Coast. Set in the main street of this heritage-listed village, the Festival celebrates Tilba's amazing community spirit and the many talents of its residents. Details on pages 35 - 36. Eden is the gateway to the beautiful Far South Coast from Victoria, and the township made it through recent bushfires unscathed. It's back to its beautiful best and ready to welcome visitors to this historic coastal town. Experience Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. 'Old Tom' was a crucial part of the most extraordinary collaboration between humans and killer whales ever witnessed on earth. The Museum has a wonderful collection of

& surrounds

artefacts from days gone by - book a tour to get the most from a visit. Eden is one of the few places in the world where Humpback Whales feed on their migratory route, and with many other whale species travelling close to shore, it's the perfect place to go whale-watching. Book a cruise or head to the nearest headland or beach between September to November. Local Aboriginal people (members of the Yuin nation) had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. Some sections of the area's spectacular National Parks were affected by bushfires, but hopefully by mid-March these areas will be re-opened. The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafĂŠs, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a bakery, deli, ethical fashion store, an organic and bulk food shop and an oldfashioned milkbar. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, dog friendly beach at Middle

Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth. Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of Broadwater Oyster's delicious freshlyshucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake.

Merimbula, the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast, really struggled this summer with thousands of tourists evacuated at the peak of the bushfire crisis. The region is once again open for business and Merimbula is inviting visitors to come and stay seeing your face will bring a smile to ours! Merimbula really does have something for everyone, with its beautiful beaches, lakeside restaurants and cafĂŠs, great shopping and an array of attractions and accommodation. There are several walking tracks with beautiful views - try from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach. So come to Merimbula - spend some time in town, spend some time checking out the villages and towns in the region and help put smiles on a lot of faces.

Bega is the business heart of the Bega Valley and a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and the forested escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy

products. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region; it has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts exhibitions all year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery and Field-Martin Art Studio/Gallery. Stretch your legs around the walking track from the sporting fields near the Bridge, over to the Bega River and around the Old Racecourse.

Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all accessible around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with

a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. On 31st December 2019, Cobargo's streetscape changed forever, but the heart and soul of Cobargo remains stronger than ever.

Members of this amazing community have come together in so many ways, helping saving neighbours properties from fire, setting up and running their own relief centre and supporting the families who tragically lost two men. Resources have been pooled, shared, donated and given away. A doctor lost his surgery on his property out of town, so he set up his practice in a solar-powered motor home, as regular local patients kept asking for help. This is a community that knows how to work together and support each other. If you'd like to help Cobargo, the best thing to do is jump in the car and visit. The paddocks are beautiful and green, and with help from organisations like BlazeAid, Team Rubicon and the Australian Defence Forces,

things are slowly returning to a new 'normal'. There are shops in Cobargo that have not been affected by fire, and they could really use your support. Bring your empty esky, stay for lunch, stay for the weekend, stay for a week. The Cobargo Markets, an initiative of Cobargo Creators, are on every Saturday from 8am - 1pm. EAT FESTIVAL 6th - 8th March, Merimbula Merimbula's EAT Festival, held on the picturesque foreshore of Merimbula’s major oyster producing estuary on March 8th, sees the industry’s best come together. Set in a bustling market style, from 10am - 2pm EAT Festival showcases inspired dishes featuring local produce, with dishes presented in entrée sizes and capped at $10 per dish. This year everyone’s favourite foodie festival has expanded to include a series of partner events that will provide a richer and more delicious experience for visitors and locals alike. Over the weekend, passionate and creative chefs will work their magic at a number of highquality events.

The Merimbula Wharf restaurant has a Three Chefs Degustation Dinner and Wheelers Seafood Restaurant is bringing back the Long Table Lunch. SCULPTURE BERMAGUI 6th - 15th March, Bermagui Determined to continue, the committee organising SCULPTURE Bermagui have overcome the effects of fires and floods to present this spectacular creative event. Sculptures will express artists' responses to the events that have ravaged the beautiful Far South Coast, as well as those that have a positive view of the future. This year the Artists' talks will be happening at beautiful Mystery Bay with three artists speaking about their work, inspiration and process sculpture. Another innovative activity is “Poetry meets Sculpture”... lines of inspiration will be collected from the public who view the exhibition. Local poetry groups

will then create an inspirational and truly unique piece of verse to be performed and displayed at the closing ceremony on Sunday 15th starting at 4.30pm. TILBA FESTIVAL 11th April, Central Tilba For more than 35 years, the Tilba Festival has been the place to be on Easter Saturday. In 2020, this wonderful celebration of heritage, local produce and musical talent demonstrates Tilba's amazing community spirit following an horrific summer. Featuring talented local musicians, fantastic food, games for everyone (fancy cheese rolling or the egg toss?) street stalls and entertainment for the kids, this fabulous community event is one not to miss. The Tilba Festival is run by a small band of dedicated volunteers and is a not-forprofit community event. Proceeds from the festival traditionally support various local groups, directly benefiting

Bermagui offers visitors a myriad of things to do and places to go. Pristine beaches and lakes provide water activities from surfing to swimming, snorkeling, boating and kayaking. The Continental Shelf is just 20km offshore, making Bermagui the closest point to the Shelf on the Australian east coast, and an ideal place to book a fishing charter on one of the many local boats. If you'd prefer to stick to the shore, you can throw in a line from the beach, rocks or

along the Bermagui River. Don't miss a swim in the beautiful Blue Pool, set on the edge of the ocean at the base of the cliffs off Pacific Drive. Try out the 18 hole golf course, hit a ball around the tennis courts or play bowls at the Bermagui Country Club. Bermagui has it's very own Art Trail, with galleries like Narek, Grimm-Hewitt Studio/ Gallery, Bermagui Mudworks to the south and Ivy Hill at Wapengo - spend a day delving into their collections. Go bush walking or bird watch in the surrounding National Parks and State Forests. Take a stroll through the Fishermens Wharf complex, with its retail outlets, galleries, restaurants and cafés. Close to Bermagui, Wallaga Lake is one of the largest coastal lakes in NSW, an area of outstanding natural beauty with special significance for local Aboriginal people. Montreal Goldfield at Wallaga Lake is Australia's only Goldfield that goes to the sea, and has guided tours daily. Learn about the discovery of gold in the 1880s and its impact on Bermagui and its surrounds. The Camel Rock Brewery and Cafe, located in the Wallaga Lake Big 4 Holiday Park has craft beers on tap and American-influenced food.

SCULPTURE Bermagui celebrates the power of art SCULPTURE Bermagui has been running for a few years now, with the 2019 event a particularly successful one. This year, despite a record number of expressions of interest, mother nature stepped in to make things very uncertain for quite a while. Happily, Bermagui weathered the storm, and the exhibition is going ahead. From 6th - 15th March, our Indoor and Outdoor exhibitions will be on display in their beautiful settings. Our wonderful team of volunteers seem even more motivated to ensure that this is one of the brightest and best exhibitions to date. The community needs an event to remind us how amazing our south coast location is. The Business community especially needs some help from visitors to the region. Hopefully locals and those from further afield will make an even bigger effort to be here in 2020 to enjoy what may prove to be the best event yet. Many of our exhibitors have been affected by bushfires. Some, like Jen Mallinson, with works “Rejuvenation” and “Renewal’ and Ron Threlfall, with “Weeping Woman” and “Aftermath” have been inspired to create sculptures to convey their own experience with the inferno that swept through our beautiful country only a few short weeks ago. David Doyle has chosen to inspire us to look forward to the future with his “Field of Happy Flowers”. Sales of David’s flowers will go to a Sculptor who has been impacted by the fires. In 2020 we have our own mascot: Bermagui Spirit (see below right). This little soul will play an integral part during our SCULPTURE Bermagui event, encapsulating the energy, potential and beauty of the region. A series of Bermagui Spirit: Pauline Balos

‘Spirits’, crafted by our own Pauline Balos, will be dotted around the exhibition trail for people to find, hopefully taking ‘Selfies’ and posting to Instagram (#bermispirit). A silent auction will be held where visitors can bid for the ‘Spirit’ of their choice. The lucky winners will be announced at the closing ceremony. A highlight of this year’s exhibition will be the Artists’ Talks held on Saturday 14th from 11am - approx. 2pm. Three exhibiting artists, Anneke Paijmans, Hugh Burrell and Michael Purdy will speak about their work, inspiration and process. This event will be held at a beautiful Mystery Bay location, with morning tea, a light lunch and beverage included. Tickets ($40) available from the SCULPTURE Bermagui website. Fun for all ages is to be had at the ‘Tin Foil Workshop’. Inspired by the works of Japanese artist Toshihiko Mitsuya, it is hoped that visitors will be motivated to create their own small sculptural works of art. Children's days, 1880s goldfield style This April 12th and 13th, Montreal Goldfield’s Children's Days are offering something to stir the imagination of children living on, or visiting, the Far South Coast. From 10am to 12 noon, children can take a walk back in time with activities of the 1880s. Write out your Miner’s License with pen and ink; dress up in costumes of the 1880s; play some great games of days gone by. Take a mini tour of the Goldfield and learn how

to pan for gold! There are lots of new activities to enjoy this year for children that have previously been to a Children's Day. The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation, particularly Yuin women. Gulaga is cloaked with an amazing rainforest around its peak and it's well worth hiking to the top for spectacular views (approx. 5 hours). Access the walking track from the rear of Pam's Store in Tilba Tilba. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilbaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. 34

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba has maintained its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as oldfashioned stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Leatherwork, art studios, woodwork, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and giftware, as well as a bakery and a pub are all located on Central Tilbaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main street. Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, nestled between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet, with Gulaga Mountain (Mt. Memorable Mogo Mogo suffered a similar fate to Cobargo on New Year's Eve 2019, and just like Cobargo, Mogo has come together to support its members. Things have taken a huge step forward with the arrival in February of semi-trailers delivering 10 demountable buildings from Sydney. The buildings will form a 'pop-up mall' next to the Mogo Day Surgery, providing space for up to 10 local businesses that lost everything to fire. Thanks to the Business Council of Australia's community rebuilding initiative BizRebuild, the

pop-ups should be open in time for Easter. Fit-outs will be undertaken by local tradespeople who will be supporting local suppliers. Three other structures were delivered to the Mogo Local Aboriginal Land Council. Not everyone in Mogo was affected by fire; there are still lots of businesses open. They're trading as normal, but like Cobargo, they need more customers to help recover from summer losses. So please put Mogo on your destination list - and help this beautiful village get back on its feet.
