A Note from Pastor What is a Fruitful Congregation? Over the past 2 years there has been a lot of talk about the Fruitful Congregations Journey that we were selected by the Indiana Conference to be a part of. That journey is at a point now that requires us, Dyer UMC, to make a decision; “Do we want to be a fruitful congregation and are we willing to do what it takes to become one?” I’d like to take this opportunity to share my thoughts about what it means to be a fruitful congregation. Let’s start with an illustration. An apple tree has one main purpose, a life mission if you will; that mission is to produce apples; to do everything that is necessary in order for apples to form on it’s branches. When the apple tree does what is necessary; receive sunlight, except nourishment, drink water; apples are produced by it’s branches and it is, in fact, fruitful. The sign of fruitfulness in our congregation, or in the Church in general, is new believers. Fruitfulness in the church is recognized by how well we are doing at sharing the love of Jesus with those who don’t know Him yet. This doesn’t mean that we, the Church, don’t have a responsibility to nurture and foster growth in those who are already in a committed relationship with Jesus; we do have that responsibility. However; our purpose, our mission as a congregation, is, “To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” Disciples are the fruit we produce when we are successful at achieving our purpose, our mission. Going back to the apple tree illustration though; if the apples already on the tree took all of the sunlight, all of the nourishment and all of the water for themselves, new apples would never be produced even though there is plenty of space on the branches to hold them. If we take what Jesus offers us; His love, His mercy, His grace, His compassion and every other good, nourishing thing He offers to us, and we keep it all to ourselves, we will not be a fruitful congregation. But if we take all that He offers us into the world; into our families, into our neighborhoods, into our workplaces and favorite restaurants and coffee shops and everywhere we go...we will be fruitful; we will see new disciples growing in their faith and learning how to join us in our effort to make more disciples. I simply want to ask you to pray about fruitfulness at Dyer UMC; pray about the decision you have to make as a disciple and that we have to make as a church; “Do we want to be a fruitful congregation and are we willing to do what it takes to become one?” Shalom, Pastor Jim

Current Sermon Series Go! August 17 thru September 7, 2014 There are purposes for our Church being at 2016 Church Street, Dyer, IN. One of those purposes is for those of us who are a part of this congregation to gather together on Sunday mornings to worship our great God, corporately pray to Him, sing praises to Him and be together, in His presence. We are pretty good at fulfilling that purpose. However; gathering together on Sunday mornings is only one of the purposes for the location of our building. Another purpose is that it gives us a community to focus on; it gives us a local mission field; that mission field is the Tri-Town area. This series is called, “Go!” because I will be preaching sermons that encourage us to Go; to leave our building and to take Jesus into the mission field that we have been given; to work toward our mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world by going into the world rather than waiting for the world to come to us. Let’s go together, with Jesus, and start changing the world a little corner at a time. August 17, 2014 Go Pray! Mark 1:35-39 We learn very early in Mark’s gospel that prayer time was very important to Jesus. In this passage we read that He was intentional about setting aside time to go to a solitary place to be with the Father in prayer. Then, afterwards, we read that He went into the world to do ministry there. I wonder how intentional we are about intentionally “going” somewhere to be with the Father in prayer? How often do we find that solitary place, like Jesus did, where we can just be with God before we go out into the world to be with His people there? August 24, 2014 Go Study! Matthew 5:1-16 Jesus preached in the synagogues but more often Jesus “went” out and taught in the midst of the crowds. I believe we should be following His lead. This week we’ll consider the importance of the church leaving the building to study God’s Word among the crowds. August 31, 2014 Go Serve! Matthew 25:31-46 I believe Matthew 25:31-46 is a theme passage for those who follow Jesus. We are called, by Jesus, through this passage, to go out into the world and serve Him by serving His children. This week we’ll consider the importance of the church leaving the building to serve Jesus by serving the needy people in our communities September 7, 2014 Go Make Disciples! Matthew 28:16-20 The Great Commission is our mission as followers of Jesus. Just like the early disciples, we are called through these words of Jesus, to go out into the world and make disciples; to be in our communities sharing and spreading not only the knowledge that Jesus is real, but also that He loves all people and wants to be in relationship with all people. Our mission is to go out and help Him with His mission. You ARE able! Are you willing?
