We have created works of art, helped lead liturgical reform and fostered life in parishes and communities. SUMMER 2012

Dear Friends: It’s summer in Michigan. Hooray! Even though I love to travel, I never want to leave the beauty of Michigan in the summer. As Dorothy said upon her return from Oz, “There is no place like home.” Places are important to us, aren’t they? We all have our favorites – the back porch, grandma’s kitchen, a certain stretch of beach. Even though we live in a technological age that allows us to be “virtually” anywhere we want to be, nothing is the same as “actually, physically, being” somewhere special. Many people speak of Dominican Center at Marywood as a special place. Whether they visit our campus to attend a business conference, a social gathering or a spiritual program, they consistently remark about the special, peaceful feeling that comes over them as soon as they enter the driveway. Perhaps it is the beautiful grounds, or the quiet, welcoming smiles of the Sisters who live here. Perhaps it is the atmosphere steeped in decades of prayer.

Mary Vaccaro

I invite you to visit us at Dominican Center this summer. Come to this peaceful, warm and welcoming place – to reflect and pray, learn and grow, as individuals and/or through meeting with others. We provide a variety of spirituality programs, workshops, retreats, individual and group spiritual direction. We offer hospitality, delicious food and gracious service, for those who use our conference services as groups, organizations, or simply as family and friends, gathering to celebrate life’s special events. If you are in search of a special place to be this summer, Dominican Center may be the place for you. All are welcome. Peace/Shalom/Salaam Alaikum P.S. Although Michigan summers are lovely, they also include construction detours. Please note that the intersection of Fulton and Lakeside will be inaccessible until early June. Please plan to approach our campus from Michigan and Lakeside. We apologize for any inconvenience. Mary Vaccaro Director

Our Mission: We foster the growth and transformation of persons, communities and organizations through prayer, learning and collaboration in an inclusive, hospitable environment.

WOMEN AND THE WORD (086-057) Keynote Speakers: Barbara Reid, OP; Mary Catherine Hilkert, OP; Amy-Jill Levine, PhD Monday, Friday. June 11 – 15, 2012 at 8:30 am – 5:00 pm In celebration of the 800th Anniversary of the founding of the Dominican Order, Dominican Center at Marywood presents a Barbara Reid, OP week-long conference and retreat for women, men, preachers, hearers and doers of the Word. Each day will begin with Morning Prayer with preaching. Optional workshops, including storytelling, poetry, photography, music, movement and art will be offered Monday through Thursday afternoons. Each day will close with Eucharist or Evening Prayer with preaching. Note: This conference includes the programs Misunderstanding Judaism Means Misunderstanding Jesus (086-058); Avoiding Anti-Jewish Preaching and Teaching (086-049); and Entrusted with the Word (086-059) which are also available separately in this catalog. Cost: $300.00 ($360.00 after April 15, 2012). This price includes continental breakfast Monday through Friday at Dominican Center. MISUNDERSTANDING JUDAISM MEANS MISUNDERSTANDING JESUS (086-058) Presenter: Amy-Jill Levine, PhD Co-sponsors: Congregation Ahavas Israel, Temple Emanuel, The 2012 Year of Interfaith Understanding Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at 7:00 – 9:00 pm Jesus of Nazareth followed the Torah of Moses, found inspiration in the Prophets of Israel, and founded a community of fellow Jews. Yet often Jesus is misunderstood as rejecting Judaism, and first century Judaism is misunderstood as legalistic, misogynist, vengeful, and xenophobic. Correctly locating Jesus in his Jewish context not only brings new meaning to his parables, his politics, and his piety, it both prevents anti-Jewish teaching and opens a new path for Jewish-Christian relations. Cost: $10.00. Amy-Jill Levine, PhD ENTRUSTED WITH THE WORD (086-059) Presenter: Mary Catherine Hilkert, OP — Professor of Theology, University of Notre Dame. Friday, June 15, 2012 at 1:00 – 3:00 pm According to Vatican II's Constitution on Divine Revelation, Dei Verbum, the Word of God has been entrusted to the entire church. This presentation will focus on the share of all baptized persons in the prophetic mission of the church and the charism given by the Holy Spirit as the source of the authority to preach. Particular attention will be given to the experience of women since the time of the Second Vatican Council and how Dominican spirituality can be a resource for the preaching ministry of the entire church. Cost: $10.00. Mary Catherine Hilkert, OP

AVOIDING ANTI-JEWISH PREACHING AND TEACHING: A BREAKFAST FOR CLERGY AND OTHER RELIGIOUS EDUCATORS (086-049) Presenter: Amy-Jill Levine, PhD Co-sponsors: Congregation Ahavas Israel, Temple Emanuel, The 2012 Year of Interfaith Understanding Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at 7:00 – 9:00 am Too often Jesus of Nazareth is incorrectly seen as rejecting Judaism, and too often his Jewish context is incorrectly regarded as legalistic, elitist, and obsessed with ritual purity, misogynist, vengeful, and xenophobic. Understanding Jesus in his Jewish context corrects false stereotypes, brings new meaning to his parables, his politics and his piety, and offers a new path for Jewish-Christian relations. Thanks to the generosity of Dr. Levine, who has waived her speaker fee, and a mini-grant from The 2012 Year of Interfaith Understanding, we are able to offer this program for a low cost to participants. Copies of The Jewish Annotated New Testament by Amy-Jill Levine and Marc Z. Brettler will be available for purchase at the DCM Bookstore for $20.00 (retails for $35.00). Cost: $15.00 (includes a full, hot breakfast).

An array of gifts, cards, candles and music round out the possibilities. Hours: Weekdays 12:00 pm – 5:30 pm Spiritual Direction Spiritual Direction can best be summed up as the art of contemplative listening, which is listening with the whole of one’s being. Traditionally, Spiritual Direction has been described in terms of a one-to-one relationship. Another approach that is relatively new is that of Group Spiritual Direction. One’s situation in Spiritual Direction offers a safe, nonjudgmental place of welcome for the directee where his/ her experiences are taken seriously. Contemplation and personal reflection on one’s life and prayer bring this communication to awareness. Articulating and clarifying these experiences with a spiritual director assists the person to notice even more about his/her conscious relationship with God. Weekly Contemplative Prayer Groups • Lectio Divina Wednesdays at 12:00 - 12:30 pm. Looking for a way to deepen your prayer life? Join us on Wednesdays for a blend of slow, prayerful reading of scripture and silence. • Centering Prayer Tuesdays at 5:30 - 6:30 pm. Come to learn and be renewed in the practice of this wordless, silent prayer. Centering prayer is a method of deep prayer described in the Cloud of Unknowing in the 14th century. It has been put into contemporary form by the Trappist monk Fr. Thomas Keating, OCSO and has become a popular source of spiritual renewal.

Worship

Sunday Eucharist In 1985, with the renovation of the Dominican Chapel Marywood, the Sisters invited lay people to join them in worship and song. Many have responded and the body of worshipers has grown along with their level of involvement. The Sunday Assembly continues to be a growing community of Sisters, Associates and lay people who have developed a strong spiritual bond with each other. We are grateful for the services of our Diocesan and Order priests who come to celebrate liturgy with us: Monsignor Gus Ancona, Fathers Lou Anderson, Bob Balser CSsr, Ray Bruck, Melvin Fox, Joachim Lally, CSP, Phil Shangraw, John Thome, Tom Thompson, and Don Weber. This form of prayer is an integral expression of our common life. The psalms of Morning and Evening Prayer express the moods of the human heart: praise and thanksgiving, petition and longing, hope and confidence, lament and complaint. Morning and Evening Prayer are celebrated daily.
