SPIRITUAL FORMATION PROGRAMS TO CONSIDER FOR FALL 2014 Each fall, Dominican Center offers substantive programs in Spiritual Formation. Some may be taken for credit through Aquinas College. These programs deepen the participant’s personal spirituality and worldview. The Spirit touches lives and hearts, helping us make a difference in the world. • Foundations is the basic course in spirituality, includes learning about and praying with spiritual giants across the centuries and Christian traditions. • Companioning helps develop an open attitude for interacting with friends and co-workers without becoming an advice giver. • Practicum prepares spiritual directors. • Facilitating Contemplative Groups trains in organizing and leading small groups. • Dominican Spirituality includes prayer, study, and community building for those interested in learning about or becoming Dominican. For more information: http://dominicancenter.com/spiritual-formation/ SPIRITUAL DIRECTION Spiritual Direction can best be summed up as the art of contemplative listening, which is listening with the whole of one’s being. Traditionally, Spiritual Direction has been described in terms of a one-to-one relationship. Another approach that is relatively new is that of group Spiritual Direction. One’s situation in Spiritual Direction offers a safe, non-judgmental place of welcome for the directee where his/her experiences are taken seriously. Contemplation and personal reflection on one’s life and prayer bring this communication to awareness. Articulating and clarifying these experiences with a spiritual director assists the person to notice even more about his/her conscious relationship with God. For more information, call 616.514.3325.

In any given moment, this assumes that a leader is presented with multiple responsibilities and commitments—all of nearly equal importance. As such, effective leadership seemingly requires the competent juggling of experience. But what if this is not necessary or true? Indeed, our faith offers an alternative path. Contemplative leadership affirms the primacy of what is truly needful and is based upon a deeper trust than our ability to juggle. Drawing upon the Christian Mystical Tradition, Gestalt and Jungian Psychology and Zen Buddhist perspectives, we shall explore the experience of prayerful mind as our leadership moves beneath and beyond the tyranny of the urgent. Worship OUR CHAPELS ARE SACRED SPACES FOR PRAYER We treasure liturgical prayer. Rooted in Dominican Spirituality and in the spirit of Vatican II, the depth of our liturgical prayer grounds us in Holy Mystery and helps us to be authentic in today’s world. EUCHARIST In 1985 with the renovation of the Marywood chapel, the Sisters invited lay people to join them in worship and song. Many have responded and the body of worshipers has grown along with their level of involvement. The Sunday Assembly continues to be a growing community of Sisters, Associates and lay people who have developed a strong spiritual bond with each other. The quality of preaching, music, and inclusivity are of primary importance to us. All are welcome. Sunday Eucharist: Dominican Chapel Marywood 10:00 a.m. Mon., Wed., Fri. Eucharist: Aquinata Hall Chapel 9:45 a.m. MORNING AND EVENING PRAYER As darkness gives way to the morning sun and as the sun sets on the day’s labors, we mark these sacred moments with psalms of praise and thanks. For Dominicans, communal prayer forms the foundation of the contemplative life and the holy preaching. The Marywood Grotto

When you enter the Marywood campus from Fulton Street, look carefully to your left, and you will notice the grotto pictured above. It is a rather small rustic structure that fits into the woodsy backdrop, appearing almost to have grown there. The softly rounded fieldstones surround and embrace the altar and the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes. Built circa 1950, the grotto served as an altar for Masses and May Crownings in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Although the original plan included a fountain below the statue of Our Lady, it was never completed. In 2008, the shrubbery was cut and the grotto made more visible. The rocks were all tuckpointed; the window and the door replaced for the store room in the back of the structure. Here above, under a soft blanket of snow, it seems to quietly whisper to those who come to Marywood that this is a welcoming place of peace, quiet and refuge—for programs at Dominican Center, spiritual direction, retreats, inspirational liturgy and prayer for all.
