Australia’s International Documentary Festival

Celebrating great Australian stories

Stories that stay with you

weLcoMe message from the PreMier oF SoutH AuStrALiA I extend a warm welcome to delegates attending DocWeek 2014. We are delighted that you are able to visit Adelaide during our Festival period and hope that you will have the opportunity to enjoy the best of South Australia. We feel privileged to have had the opportunity to host DocWeek (AIDC) continuously since 2009. We will continue to host this event until at least 2015. It has been our privilege to welcome aficionados to South Australia. While you attend the Conference and use your time here to progress the art of documentary, public audiences will indulge in documentary screenings in venues across Adelaide.

Joost den Hartog has curated an outstanding selection of retrospective masterworks and brand new films from emerging artists. This year’s program will be further strengthened by a special selection of new work from outstanding new filmmakers from the Asia-Pacific region. It all promises to be an exciting DocWeek 2014. On behalf of South Australia, I wish you an inspiring and enjoyable time.

The Hon Jay weatherill mP

message from tHe Aidc co cHAirS Welcome to the 28th year of AIDC, which has now evolved into DocWeek. This year we have expanded the Conference and Market to cater for as many industry areas as possible, without losing our core values of documentary storytelling and our overall passion of being a valuable organisation for the industry. The highlights for 2014 are varied, resulting in so many choices for delegates. From the opening night of the documentary screenings to the keynote address from Stephen Lambert, this year is all about variety. Let’s Talk, our new market initiative, extends us into the area of facilitating the growth of the industry by providing delegates with easier access to broadcasters, sales agents and funding agencies. We have made it easy for experienced and first time attendees to get up close with the key industry members at the Conference. The Stanley Hawes Award is always a highlight, not only for the excitement of the night but it gives all of us a chance to celebrate those that have contributed in many ways to the industry.

The opening night party is a must attend event, not only because it is held in the historic Mortlock Chamber at the State Library of South Australia, but also because it is the place to kick off your own campaign at the Conference. We look forward to meeting as many of you as possible on the night. DocWeek in 2014 is exciting, it reflects where we are heading as television and documentary professionals. The future does look bright, all forms of TV are growing rather than declining, our audiences in Australia and globally are expanding. The technology may be changing but in the end it is the storytelling that survives. We hope that this week you not only get to tell some great stories, but you also get to share our excitement for a positive future. Thank you for your support.

lori Flekser & Ray Pedretti

message from the executive director AIDC: Your View Into The Future DocWeek’s 2014 AIDC program aims for the future – and industry development is our focus. Following Graeme Mason’s inaugural opening address, we take on a meaty policy discussion – with Screen Australia’s future documentary funding structures at stake. Twice a day we will deliberately seek to cross the digital frontier and test our comfort levels. In our ever-changing world, looking forward is a skill. In our Fast Forward Predictions sessions, experts will gaze into their crystal balls and speculate about what the next five years will bring, and how change will influence decision making in the production sector. There are two talent development programs, ACCESS@AIDC and the Asia Pacific New Documentary Program, which both strongly forecast the future - the future generation that is.

AIDC 2014 presents a combination of business orientated and craft orientated programming. With keynote sessions in the mornings, and case studies and master classes in the afternoon, you are bound to be inspired. And AIDC’s Market Place is back, bigger and better! P2P: Co-Create and Let’s Talk now have their own market venue, with over 800 square metres of floor space and fresh coffee this it is a great environment to do business. I would like to thank all our speakers, sponsors and supporters, in particular the Government of South Australia through Arts SA, Screen Australia and ABC Television. Thank you to our large community of collaborators - collaborations make things happen! A big thank you to the AIDC/DocWeek team, staff and Board - you are the best. Enjoy DocWeek 2014, and especially AIDC.

Joost den Hartog

Ballroom 2 Television has always been an important tool in the brand builder’s toolbox. Advertising revenue on linear channels has been the bread and butter of the television industry since its inception. Now that television content is viewed across platforms, audience behaviour has changed, ads are skipped, and time-shifting is the norm. As a result, advertising is moving in to the programs themselves.

Hear from product placement specialist Michael Byers on how producers can take advantage of this trend.

Case Study: A Delicate Balance - the Making of Outback Coroner 3:00pm - 4:00pm

Ballroom 1 Outback Coroner is an 8-part series for Foxtel, produced by Screentime in association with Evershine, Network Foxtel CI Investors, ScreenAustralia, Foxtel and Cineflix (distributor). The Coroners were concerned that the jurisdiction was in no way harmed. The families of the recently bereaved needed to be convinced to be involved. Police and Attorneys General all had to be persuaded and contracts negotiated that reflected significant undertakings. These sensitivities and concerns needed to be balanced with the demands of commercial television. The aim was to explore the jurisdiction through the eyes of the Coroners but with the emotions and needs of the families seeking answers to unexplained deaths kept in the forefront. Making the series was a tightrope walk. The team behind the series discusses the issues of access and permissions required to commence production, craft the format and deliver the series.

Shooting North Korea: The Making of Aim High in Creation! 2:15pm - 3:15pm

Ballroom 2 To make her feature documentary on North Korean propaganda cinema, Anna Broinowski (Forbidden Lie$) travelled to Pyongyang - for two access-all-areas shoots. How do you get a media visa to the most isolated nation on earth? What is it like making a film in a country that has been sealed off from the outside world since 1953, and still shoots on celluloid with no sync sound? How do you interview people who have never heard of Stanley Kubrik, Instagram, Kim Kardashian and reality TV, let alone the Internet? How do you protect your rushes in a place that once kidnapped a South Korean director to improve its movies, and sends foreigners back to China, for framing a portrait of Kim Jong Un the wrong way? What was it like to be cast as an ‘evil American lady’ in a military thriller shot by North Korea’s Oliver Stone, Mr Ri Kwan Am, then sacked for bad acting? What did Anna and her collaborators, producer Lizzette Atkins and DOP Nicola Daley, have to do to get their rushes back out?

Co-Director • Tap That! Of Water, Land and Us Carol worked several years in the advertising industry before finally having the courage to leave and not give into complacency. In pursuit of a more fulfilling profession, one that could be rewarding to the soul, she found herself knee deep and basking in the wonderful world of photography. As an idealist Carol finds inspirations from nature, music and people she meets; with a dream to tell beautiful stories from around the world through imagery, moving or still. Tap That! Of Water, Land & Us is Carol’s first foray in documentary filmmaking and with her experience as a photographer and attention to minor details and intimate visual style, Carol has thus far pushed the limits of the visual she envisioned for this film.

Co-Director • Tap That! Of Water, Land and Us Beatrice Leong is a lover of experiences with a curious nature and venturing into documentary filmmaking was a natural shift for her. A design graduate, she has dabbled in various areas of video production from research, writing and postproduction work. Over the past year Bea has been working on her own content and actively pursuing stories that matters most to her heart. Her most recent documentary film involvement was Haze Hell Over Asia, produced by Lina Teoh that was aired over History Channel. Her involvement in the film has given her a deep understanding of how land issues and the silent impact of rampant development can affect the quality of our lives.
