DOC CELEBRATING WEEK DOCUMENTARY Adelaide // 25 February − 3 March

DOCWEEK 2013 // Australian International Documentary Conference

Born in South Australia in 1987 as the Australian National Documentary Conference, the Australian International Documentary Conference is now the pre−eminent documentary industry event in the Asia Pacific region. The conference is organised by AIDC Ltd., a not for profit industry support organisation that sees its main purposes in providing an industry platform for knowledge sharing, creating opportunities for high level networking and promoting Australian documentaries and factual programs in Australia and overseas.

With producers and broadcasters flying in from Australia and the World annually, the conference is a market place as well as a forum for ideas. During 4 days in February Adelaide is the location where new program deals are discussed and international collaborations initiated. The results of these conversations will feature on our television screens in the months and years to follow. The conference and market is open for all documentary and factual program makers, broadcasters and other industry professionals. For more information on how to participate, visit the ’industry programs’ link on docweek.org.au

Welcome to Documentary Week 2013 DocWeek celebrates documentary film and television. DocWeek has grown out of the Australian International Documentary Conference (AIDC), an annual industry conference and market for professional film and television makers and broadcasters from around the world. AIDC has a 25 year long history, but happened, until now, behind the scenes and out of the eye of the general public. It is the backstage area of the television and cinema world. During DocWeek we are providing everybody with a backstage pass and invite you into the world of factual program making and the art of documentary cinema. DocWeek offers an extensive screening program, the DocWeek Summer School, special events and Q&A sessions.

DocWeek is complimentary to other film festivals, as it doesn’t look for the hottest films of the moment, but celebrates the work of a limited number of carefully selected filmmakers, organisations or topics. DocWeek is the ultimate introduction to the wonders of documentary cinema. I would like to thank our major partners, the Government of South Australia through ArtsSA, Flinders University and Fox Creek Wines for their generous support and for believing in our vision. Join the DocWeek events and rub shoulders with filmmakers and television executives, enjoy the extraordinary work of some of the world’s most celebrated documentary makers and be amongst the first to see what the next generation of Australian talent has to offer.

In Mary Meets Mohammad the world we live in is summarised in the most beautiful way.

Since then she has travelled solo through the Democratic Republic of Congo and the streets of Rwanda filming stories of war displaced people and rap-artist genocide orphans. Chris Hegedus // Moon Over Broadway 1998 / 98mins / USA

A film by Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be in the cast of a Broadway show?

Cited by The New York Times as "the best documentary of the year", the film features hilarious turns by its leading actors − and even funnier behind−the−scenes sequences, as everyone mounting this high−risk Broadway production goes into nail−biting overdrive.

This film puts you behind the scenes, become the fly−on−the−wall backstage and experience a fresh, eye−opening, no−holds−barred look at the big bang adventure of producing a Broadway hit.

From endless rewrites to opening night (which playwright Ludwig dubs "a bar mitzvah from hell.") this is a glimpse of Broadway as never seen before.

The Broadway show is "Moon Over Buffalo", starring Carol Burnett and Philip Bosco, a comedy about a low−rent Lunt and Fontaine, hell−bent upon recharging their careers.

This film puts you in that place. It is an intimate portrait of one of the most influential songwriters of our times. Bob Dylan is the force that blew us out of one era and into another. If you love the 60’s, pop−culture, Bob Dylan, or any of the experiences and feelings that come with them, then you’ll love this film. The panel of woman included journalist and lesbian spokeswoman, Jill Johnston; legendary literacy critic

The War Room 1993 / 96mins / USA

A film by Chris Hegedus and D A Pennebaker Do you remember Bill Clinton? As the 42nd President of the United States, most of his daily life was made public – even if it wasn’t all good for his reputation. But do you remember seeing inside the presidential campaign headquarters? The chaos, the pettiness of the staff, the romance, the complications, the scandals and the emotional highlights from this office − these were not often made known to the public.

The War Room however, puts you right inside the campaign headquarters. Watch Clinton’s ship as it navigates through the chaos. As the key staff organise and execute strategies for such events as the Democratic National Convention, the debates with George Bush and H. Ross Perot, and the final, nail−biting days leading up to the election itself. The War Room is an uplifting film that restores a sense of confidence in American politics. As clever and engaging as The West Wing, but real.

docweek summer school

//

Proudly presented by Flinders University and Adelaide College of the Arts, DocWeek 2013 introduces DocWeek Summer School. This is your chance to get up close and personal with international filmmakers and key industry people. These interactive sessions give audience members the opportunity to engage with the artists and enablers and get an insight in the complex and exciting processes that take place behind the scenes of the film and television industry. TOPIC: Social Entrepreneurship, the Power of Documentary and What it Takes to be a Producer with an Agenda. MAIN Speaker // Ben Tsiang // FOUNDER CNEX & Producer // China Production companies are creative businesses. A financial analyses of risk and gain lies at the heart of every decision.

as well as justifying going against, or bending, small business economic conventions, can be a hard process.

In documentary production the decision process is not only informed by enterprise thinking, but often by the message embedded in the film and the audience reach of that message.

This session will demonstrate that creativity is not only captured in the end product, the film, but is an intrinsic part of the business side of filmmaking.

Navigating this process, strategising to achieve maximum impact

TOPIC: Creative Collaboration and How to Benefit from Sticking With a Winning Team

Nikolaus Geyrhalter and Wolfgang Widerhofer // Director & Editor NGF // Austria Collaboration is the bread and butter of the film industry. Whilst the director garners the main acclaim, it is the people behind the scenes that are of equal importance to the success of the collaboration. The traditional roles in film production were first defined in the early days of the Hollywood Studios, and still stand today. Compared to other art forms and creative businesses, this model seems archaic.

In documentary the teams are smaller and more flexible. People take on multiple roles and the intellectual stimulation between team members ensures an environment for rigor and excellence. Hear from longstanding team Nikolaus Geyrhalter and Wolfgang Widerhofer about what keeps them working together, what their processes are and where their collaborations pay off.

Austrian Reality: The Films of Nikolaus Geyrhalter

//

Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s unique cinematic style makes him one of Europe’s most recognisable documentary filmmakers. A style characterised by meticulous framing and an obsession with aesthetics. In Geyrhalter’s case, this search for the perfect image doesn’t stand in the way of the story. In fact, the visual treatment and the extremely skillful editing propel the poignancy of the stories. Using only visual aids, he leads his audiences very subtly down the path of social engagement.

Abendland 2011 / 90mins / Europe

If you like to watch, then you’ll love the beautiful camera work and careful editing of this film, that allows you to explore this often hidden world – the world at night.

This is Europe at night, a nocturnal point of view of the processes and the service providers who live their day by night. Watch as people take calls at a Dutch suicide prevention

Who do the supermarkets buy from? How do the commercial farmers ensure that they have enough products to supply the chains?

This film is widescreen tableau of a feast, which isn’t always easy to digest − and in which we all take part. It is a pure, meticulous and high−end film experience that enables you to form your own point of view.

Danube Hospital 2012 / 75mins / Austria
 A film by Nikolaus Geyrhalter Danube Hospital is Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s latest film. Carefully framed like all of his films, Nikolaus manages to craft a highly engaging piece of screen poetry. The subtle humor in the film is achieved in the edit. For those of us who love Geyrhalter’s unique style, this is another great occasion to feed our addiction. This film takes you into the "staff only" areas of Vienna’s main hospital. The beautifully shot scenes take you from the
