INTERVIEW DJNEWSMAGAZINE

The perfect union of musical minds, one karmic meeting in a recording studio resulted in Cosmic Gate’s Big Bang moment. It set brothers-in-sound Nic Chagall and Bossi on a rapidly expanding path-one that’s seen them evolve into Germany’s most consistently successful electronic music duo. Today, many things are coming up and we wanted to know more about their current projects!! 2014 seems to be the key year for those two amazing guys! Hey guys, nice to speak to you again how are you doing? Where are you reading this interview? We are good, thank you very much. Hope all the DJ News Mag readers are good too! We are home in OC/Vegas and about to jump into the Independence Day weekend with shows coming up in Canada. Our album Start To Feel was just released and moved up into the top 3 position here in the US, Canada, Russia and various other territories. So we are happy! Well we’re here to talk largely about the album… For those that haven’t yet heard, tell us about it… Well we hope you find a lot of good energy, beats to make you dance, vocals to make you sing out loud and harmonies to make you feel good. Start To Feel is not just a title, it’s the ‘program’ or mission statement for the album. We hope you guys will agree when listening to it. We are going to put you on the spot, now! Can you name 2 or 3 tracks from the album that you feel will most represent the overall sound? We are no big fans to talk about music, as music is a feeling, and feelings are often hard to put into words. As mentioned before, we think Start To Feel is an album that is based very much on emotions. We tried to write touching music, not music like a lot of the EDM tracks out there - releases that focus predominantly on the drop. We wanted real tracks, that get you right from the beginning, that collect into an album that hopefully still counts in years to come. Music simply that has a far longer than average life span - an album that hopefully gets remembered. There are some festival tracks like “Crushed” and “So Get Up”. “So Get Up” has an incredible story many years ago... Right? Yeah, very much so… “So Get Up” is a vocal from a track by Underground Sound Of Lisbon from the early 90’s that we always liked a lot, and when we worked on the beats and bassline it kept coming back to our minds. We felt it was trying to tell us something! When we eventually did, it proved the perfect fit, keeping the dark vibe but still giving a progressive party-like feel to it as well. Tell us more about "Fair Game" With Orjan Nilsen! Your first time team-up for an original track... We are simply big fans of Orjan’s style. We play a lot of his tracks, meet him a lot on tour and on top of that he is simply

20

as nice a guy as he is a good producer. So one day on tour we came up with the idea to work on a track together, quickly started moving forward with that, sent him some ideas back and force, and here we are, Fair Game was born. As we’re sitting here answering DJ News’ questions, it’s sat at #1 on Beatport’s trance chart. We couldn’t be more happy with that result! How does Cosmic Gate produce tracks in 2014? Because you are not like the other DJ's just following the trend actually. We do it as we always did since day-one. We start playing with a sound we like, create a melody, or a bassline. Maybe someone sent a vocal and then we start with some good chords, based around that. Basically every song starts differently. Producing music is not like cooking, where you’re following a recipe. Every song is different and needs a unique set of ingredients, if you know what we mean. And this is good. It keeps the inspiration up and it never gets boring for us. Even after all these years in the studio we feel inspired and always looking forward to the next step. Tell about the STF Tour… Well the US side really kicks off this weekend and rolls throughout July & August. We’ve doing a large section of it as a bus tour, which is a first for us and ‘life on the road’ is something we’re looking forward to hugely. In Europe we’ve got the biggest festival run we’ve had in 15 years. We’re playing both weekends of Tomorrowland, Global Gathering, Creamfields & SW4 in the UK, a hole run of Ibiza dates at Space & Ushuaia, Ultra Europe in Croatia, Summer Sound in Finland and a whole lot more. We’ve also done this year’s Electronic Family anthem (‘Telefunken’ with Jerome Isma-Ae), so that’s going to be a very special one too. All in all, it’s gonna be pretty epic! Wake Your Mind Radio is born and it’s already aired in many countries in the world obviously… You seem to have more than one trick in your bag. We felt it was time to bring our sound to the radio finally. Introduce the kind of tracks we play in our sets, but also play classics we think are worth to have a listen to again, or with the private playlist categories, give people an idea what we listen to when we are at home, a total different sound than you are used to from our productions maybe. Wake

DJNEWSMAGAZINE INTERVIEW

Your Mind soon was picked up indeed from many countries already, we are very happy how it develops. Soon hopefully coming to Belgium too! You are in a certain ‘mood’ this year. New album, new radio show, new deal with Armada… Is this time for a new start? Yeah, it seems so. We’re pushing the gas this year with the album, the radio show wake your mind, our label, etc. That though is really just the start. We have a lot of plans and ideas for things to come already after Start To Feel. How about your influences outside of electronic music? Our influences started in the 80’s when electronic music had not even really started. But it really goes from Classical music to pop/rock and even Indie. Our tastes are very wide and diverse. We try to have an open mind in life, which we then translate into our music. We think is important and influences our productions a lot. It’s hard to convince in this industry (EDM). Are you just like those producers saying: “I am just doing what I love and try to keep it going”? What do you think of the famous EDM “trend”? To be honest when commencing the work on Start To Feel, we were pretty much irritated by a lot of this so-called EDM music around. It was often missing that vital feeling for us. As we said before pretty much focusing on the drop of the song, and that’s it! We wanted our music to be different, to create a wider span of emotions and have more melodic aspects. Not just that typical, regular EDM vocal in it. We hope Start To Feel creates the same good feeling to the listener that we had when producing it. Are you not scared about this « pressure » that many producers have more and more coming from the industry? There seems to be a pressure for artists to release a new single every 6 weeks now indeed, but we do not feel this at all. Its quality over quantity and if you do not use ghost writers like many DJs do, its impossible to keep that release rate up that high, especially if you play 150 shows a year and write everything on your own like we do. We want to write music that matters, not mass products, and we think people see and understand this, so we do not feel pressured by the industry in that regards.

What should be your biggest musical accomplishment when you look back in the past till now? We hope our music simply touches people. Makes them smile, creates positive emotions, gives them good memories talking about the older tracks. About accomplishment per-se, maybe that’s for other people to answer better than we can. Are you a fan of social media, do you think it's massively important now? Social media these days is massively important indeed. The communication to the fans is very direct, and this can only be a good thing. However with some acts we have the feeling though social media and presence in the media gets more important than their actual music. That’s not what we’re about. The artistic output, the quality of music and shows should be most important and not simply something with which to feed the social media platforms. What piece of equipment could you not live without (not necessarily DJ equipment)? Def. Our Macbooks. They are the technological center of our universe! Everyone’s got a hidden talent. What’s yours? Creating a loud pop when opening a beer bottle, using just a water bottle cup! Does this count!? What keeps you up till late? Good TV shows like House of Cards, Game of Thrones, and recently, in Asia, football till 6AM Your favorite application this year ? Tripit to organize all our travels. Perfect app! We're reaching the end of this interview; do you have a message to your fans? See you guys in Belgium for Tomorrowland! We can’t wait, looking forward to play both weekends and presenting a lot of tracks from Start To Feel. See you there guys!!!

CLUB DJNEWSMAGAZINE

FUSE is the first techno club of Belgium and has been so since its opening on April 16th 1994

24

DJNEWSMAGAZINE CLUB

It started off as a heaven for high quality techno with a reputation for bringing in the best and most innovative DJs on the scene. Alongside residents Pierre, Deg and T quest, DJs such as Jeff Mills, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Laurent Garnier, Dave Clarke, Stacey Pullen, Sven Väth, Steve Bug, Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos and lots of others seem to enjoy playing here as much as the crowd enjoys partying to their sets. These techno luminaries constantly come back for more and rate FUSE as one of their favourite clubs. After flirtations with drum’n bass during one year, the first floor that had been developed into an oasis for house-lovers, has now become the place where you will find contemporary electronics linked to both house and techno. Fuse has also organised a lot of parties outside the club such as the famous “Fuse on the beach” in Ostend, and the 10th and 15th birthday at Tour&Taxis. It is certainly worth mentioning that in the shop you are able to buy the FUSE-compilations, compiled by Dave Clarke, Dj Hell, Technasia, Joris Voorn, Shinedoe, Steve Bug, Adam Beyer, Deetron and Anthony Rother. So now it’s up to you to get acquainted with the unique ambience of this prominent techno institute, that thanks to a persisting policy of inviting quality and promising foreign artists, next to well known artists, in combination with an outstanding team of residents, the annual summer tour, the weekly radio show on Studio Brussel, the FUSE compilations, … can without any doubt be considered as an undeniable reference in the world of techno. Venture to 208 Rue Blaesstraat at Brussels and experience a cutting-edge, exciting vibe, an atmosphere fuelled by die-hard party seekers, ready to dance well into the next day…

Pukkelpop is a three-day festival organised by Leopoldsburg’s Humanistische Jongeren (“Young Humanists”) which began in 1985. Pukkelpop started life as a small, local music event before becoming an outdoor alternative festival. Pukkelpop has now become one of Europe’s greatest music events. The festival is a complete experience, and one which has been promoting community relationships for almost 30 years. Pukkelpop selects a musical line-up with an alternative fringe. Over 200 current musical sensations, living legends and visionary alternative artists all come to perform on one of our eight stages. Pukkelpop opens up a world of possibilities, from hi-octane rock to low-fi singer-songwriters, bright splashes of pure pop to banging house and hot metal. Petit Bazar and Salon Fou usher in street theatre, entertainment and well-being in all senses of the word. Pukkelpop enjoys its traditions, such as Boiler Party night on the eve of the festival. Croquet Club Jacuzzi EP Lead track “Jacuzzi” sets the tone for a unique and experimental release. Spanning moments of slo-mo electronica before moving into more energetic territory, the track not only demonstrates Croquet Club’s talent for melodic inventiveness, but also features his own vocals, which combine with soaring pads in an anthemic climax. Reminiscent of last year’s “Awake”, the infectious “Rush” features the kind of deft melodic textures, vocal sampling and washing atmospherics that are quickly becoming a Croquet Club trademark.

With a decade of DJ experience and a wide variety of musical influences from Chicago house to hip-hop and techno, this original pair bring us a new crafty tune in the form of ”Cause I Like It.” The classic house kick track spices up the standard formula with a few synth phrases and a progressive underground sound, creating a vibe that’s just as suited for a pool party as it is a club.

Michael Woods ft. Lauren Dyson In Your Arms ‘In Your Arms’ had its debut spin at Pacha’s No Pants Party in New York back in March this year, after Michael had finished the track en-route to the gig. It connected immediately, with Tiesto demanding a copy when he heard it in the booth no less. The demand from DJs and clubbers for this one has been overwhelming, and, with a significant promo plan in place this is set to be one of Michael’s most prominent releases in recent times. The package serves up a funky alternative from internationally renowned duo Plastik Funk as well as an extended club mix from Michael himself.

Blamma! Blamma! feat. Kristina Train Zsa Zsa This scinitillating mix breathes new energy and urgency into ‘Zsa Zsa’, moving away from the intense builds of both the original and Eelke’s initial remix. This time round the tempo’s been jacked up and, coupled with the swirling bottom end, makes for an unstoppable dancefloor cut. Aptly dubbed the ‘Filter Mix’ – Eelke himself calls it “an ode to the heyday of filter house” – it shows yet another expert string to the seemingly never ending bow of talent and versatility that he possesses.

Giuseppe Ottaviani With Vitamin B Waiting On Someday From its Original album version, Giuseppe’s has brilliantly built ‘Waiting On Someday’ out to stunning Extended Mix length. Plying it with reverse spun melodies and back-warped FX, he sequences in its echoing, scene setting piano lines and jangling U2-ish bass guitars. Adding to its trance-meets-Celt-rock air is singer Vitamin B (aka Irish indie-rockers MOPP former frontman Barry McKintosh). He supplies ‘Waiting On Someday’ its arena–filling verses, anthemic chorus and inherently catchy Gaelic charisma. With his OnAir Mix, Giuseppe puts a later-night spin between the crosshairs and leans on the trigger. Deepening its bassy resonance, increasing the urgency and tension of its sub-riffs and upping the drama of the vocal, he hits the peak of the break with some good Old Testament-style synthesized vengeance!

Paul van Dyk Crush (Las Salinas Remix) 10 years since it first put a squeeze on club floors, Paul van Dyk’s ‘Crush’ is back. The much-treasured lead track from his GRAMMY award nominated ‘Reflections’ album, since it original release, it’s never had an official remix sanctioned. To commemorate a decade - close to the day - since its mainline release, Van Dyk has now made the rare move of endorsing a rework. Las Salinas’ reimagining of ‘Crush’ begins in prog-trance zones, with deep, thunderous and resonant tones. Backed by meaty, vibrant kicks and Antoine Toupin’s still shiver inducing vocal call, Bircher & Harari engineer a master-class rollout of progressive tension. With its deep bongs, super-echoing panned FX and swimming pads, it finally relents to the tide of soaring strings, big ripped riffs and hard ‘Crush’ chimes.
