Earth Day Celebration Last month Jeddah, along with the rest of the world, celebrated Earth Day. The celebration came in many forms; almost everywhere you turned there was an event such as beach and desert clean-ups, lectures, young people planting trees along the roads, and many awareness campaigns from government institutions to the private sector. It is a fact that awareness is the first step to change and progress and we, the residents of Jeddah, need more efforts to constantly improve our beloved city. This latest Destination Jeddah issue marks Earth Day by sharing with you remarkable photos of many bird species, a gift of nature for Jeddawis, which are unappreciated in their habitat and are usually taken for granted. So the next time you are driving around in the city, especially in the Corniche area, look up and take delight in the magnificence of these beautiful creatures. For those who enjoy bird watching, then our featured article on Flamingos and other birds in Jeddah’s South Corniche is sure to be an interesting read.

Changing perceptions is never easy and when it comes to Saudi Arabia, most of the world loves to envision it as a nation that curbs the creativity of its youth and takes measures to keep womenfolk inside their homes. Setting out to provide a different, realistic angle on the cultural, economic and religious aspects of Saudi Arabia today are Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, two talented documentary filmmakers of New York based Loki Films. Projects by the company have been broadcast on a variety of networks including CBS, A&E, PBS, VH1, Al Jazeera, Channel 4 and Canal Plus, among others. 6

With an American Academy Awards nomination for best documentary feature (2007’s Jesus Camp) under their belts, the duo of Ewing and Grady are now tackling the land of massive dunes and tall, modern buildings in order to unravel some mysteries surrounding it. Their latest documentary production, titled “Inside the Kingdom”, will give viewers a closer look at the Saudi society and its intricacies. Director Heidi Ewing with Director of Photography Tony Hardmon arrived in Jeddah in mid-January 2009 for a shoot schedule that will bring them closer to finishing their documentary film. Tony Hardmon has been a part of the TV and film industry for three decades and has been camera operator on Loki Films’ project “Jesus Camp” as well as Michael Moore’s documentary “Sicko”. Enlisting the help of local crew, the team brought on board Production Co-ordinator Khaled Dehlawi and Associate Producer Hasan Hatrash. One segment of the documentary will feature the Saudi youth, who let go their inhibitions and speak from their hearts in front of the camera. For this sole purpose, an audition was announced by Loki Films in the city of Jeddah and from 15th to 16th of February 2009, young Saudi individuals between the ages of fourteen and twenty-five stepped in to Rumman Company offices for a one on one interview with the director. Snippets of these interviews will be used in the documentary. As work progresses on “Inside the Kingdom”,
the filmmakers find themselves absorbing the Saudi culture everyday and learning the Arabic language to better connect with the country that has more to it than just the label of being the world’s largest oil producer.

MEETING OF CULTURES: A group of German college students came to Jeddah as guests of Effat college. During their stay they met young Saudi people and exchanged cultural values, spending time sight-seeing and shopping. On their last day, the students visited the young Fainak group where they spent a day together, their first stop being the the office of Fainak and later on they went out for shopping and dinner.

National Day Celebration
at American Consulate General in Jeddah The Consulate General of the United States of America in Jeddah observed its 2009 American National Day on March 8, 2009 with a gala celebration and was host to over three-hundred guests. The event presented an opportunity to welcome new guests and long-time friends to the Consulate and to say goodbye to those members of the community that were departing. The National Day reception started off with the playing of national anthems of USA and Saudi Arabia. In his remarks, U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ford M. Fraker noted important achievements that were accomplished over the last year. He praised the King Abdullah Scholarship program and noted that the U.S. currently hosts 15,000 Saudi students – the highest level since 2001. Ambassador Ford Fraker thanked his Saudi counterparts for their support and friendship during his time as U.S. Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. U.S. Consul General Martin Quinn noted in his remarks that while it was his first time hosting the American National Day in Jeddah
but it would not be his last. He took the opportunity to recognize the various achievements of Ambassador Fraker during his tenure and thanked him for his two years of service in Saudi Arabia. As a parting gift, Consul General Quinn presented Ambassador Fraker with a flag which had been flown above the Consulate General in Jeddah in his honor. After the speeches, it was time for dinner and on the menu was a wide sampling of American food sponsored by 22 American food vendors from Jeddah.

Emaar Middle East Hosts Students and Faculty of Effat University
Emaar Middle East, currently developing Jeddah Gate and Al Khobar Lakes in Saudi Arabia, hosted a delegation of 33 students and faculty members from the Architecture Department of Effat University on a tour of the Jeddah Gate development. The visit aimed to share Emaar’s knowledge and expertise in project management, construction techniques, and interior design with the students. Emaar Middle East officials presented an overview of the various components of Jeddah Gate and explained the latest construction technologies being employed in developing the project as per schedule. The students and faculty interacted with the officials on the details of the project including interior design aspects. Jeddah Gate project is spread over half a million sq. m., and will feature 6,000 residential units, 230,000 sq. m. of office space and 75,000 sq. m. of gross leasable area for retailers.

Important guests were invited to the reception, which basically marked the Ambassador’s relocation to Jeddah city.

The tournament showcased great skills amongst the squash players who took part in it. By the end of the evening, three finalists emerged and were given memberships to Gold’s Gym and medals. A trip to London was also awarded to the first place winner.

JCCI HONORS YOUNG ACHIEVERS: The Jeddah Chamber of Commerce recognized two successful companies by hosting a function inside Ismail Abu Dawood Hall in order to bring these businesses and their respective owners in to the limelight amongst Jeddah’s investors. Taking a cue from the Saudi Fast Growth 100, which took place very recently, the function also highlighted non-traditional success stories of young achievers. Lomar, a designer brand which has redefined thobes and came in at number thirteen in the 2009 Saudi Fast Growth Startup List, was given special recognition and Loai Nasseem, who launched the company along with his wife Mona Haddad, took to the stage and shared his experience of taking the Lomar brand and making it a household name in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Rumman Company, parent company of Fainak.com and one that made it in the 2009 Saudi Fast Growth Company to Watch List, was also given special recognition for its unique approach in having the youth be involved in its ventures and for having a strong leadership. Bayan Abuzinadah, art director for Rumman, and Maria Mahdaly, Fainak.com team manager, explained to the audience the uphill journey in bringing Rumman Company’s two ventures, namely Destination Jeddah Magazine and Fainak, to fruition.

Z MAGAZINE RE-LAUNCH AT JEDDAH RACEWAY: Armed with a new image and more content, the local car magazine “Z” was unveiled in an exciting way at a press conference held in the Jeddah Raceway Café on 20th April, 2009. Attended by the press and important guests, the launching ceremony was headed by Ms. Badia, the founder and owner of the magazine, Mr. Mohammed Sufyani of saudigear.com, and Mr. Mishael bin Abdulmohsen bin Abdurrahman Al-Sulaiman of United Racing Company that built the Jeddah Raceway. This will be the first of a series of annual events in the area of graphic design to be held at Dar Al-Hekma. The event will encompass many activities, including presentations, workshops, and an exhibition of the work of Dar Al-Hekma’s graphic design students. Contrasting from the beige, sandy colors of its surroundings, the city is a dominant green with lush vegetation in the form of vast date palm groves and vegetable gardens that carpet the broad valley floor; a feast for the eyes. The city library consists of books from famous poets such as Antarah bin Shadad, a native of this city and the author of one of the most famous Arabic poems “Mu’allaqat”. Well known by the generosity of its people in Saudi Arabia and the Arab world, Ha’il is also the place where Hatim al-Tai (famous preIslamic Arabian poet) lived. During times of foreign influence, the city of Ha’il preserved the purity of the Arabic language. Thus, it has been bestowed the title of “the center of learning” and is home to the famous University of Ha’il. Like so many other parts of Saudi Arabia, Ha’il is building on its traditional strengths while looking for new areas in which to diversify and prosper.

1362.45 Kilometer Art Exhibition
Termed as “the art of connection” by the organizers, the 1362.45 KM art exhibition was an excellent showcase for Saudi artists and a delight for art enthusiasts who came to see the paintings.

rought to fruition by Ro’iya Art Consultancy, the exhibition took place from March 2nd to March 8th at the Atelier Gallery which was adorned with 78 paintings by 14 artists belonging to different parts of the country. The underlying theme of this art exhibition was the connection between the points or towns that lie between the Western and Eastern regions of the country and this was the inspiration behind the exhibitionís title as well. The paintings had an awe-inspiring quality to them and included works by Nahar Marzooq, Badriah Al-Shamrani and Zahraa Al-Matrook to name a few of the artists. كيلومتر1362.45 معرض

The Al-Makiyah Culture House, Sami Angawi’s eco-friendly residence, was host to two American experts; Brad Lancaster, an authority on water management, and David Eisenberg, a leading conservationist and green building materials advocate. On April 21st, Lancaster and Eisenberg were invited to speak on Earth Day after they were given a tour of the residence. The Angawi home implements the Al-Mizan concept which works to strike a balance between all of its elements as well as its water recycling technology working to sustain the growing number of plants on the premises. Lancaster’s lecture focused on the source of his motivation to take interest in the study of water management and rain-harvesting prompted by the need to do something about water depletion in his hometown of Tucson, Arizona. He described the methods which have benefitted his own home that was barren land and turned it into a thriving green property in less than ten years; all thanks to rain-harvested water, costing absolutely nothing. He explained how household greywater, wastewater from washing machines and bathroom sinks can be reused to benefit the home again. His mentor, Zephaniah Phiri Maseko, who lives in the driest region of Zimbabwe, “turned a wasteland into an oasis,” Lancaster said. 26 DESTINATION JEDDAH
“Now he grows hundreds of trees which he gives away for free...to those in the community. Every time he gives away a tree he says, ‘Here is the tree; but before you plant it, you must plant the rain, so that there is water for the tree.’” Eisenberg in his lecture discussed the intricate relationship between nature and research and how they mutually benefit one another. “If you look at how things happen in nature, you will see that it does not degrade other systems as it evolves and builds new things. But our ways of building do exactly the opposite.” He dismissed the idea that buildings made from natural materials, i.e. straw and adobe, were just as effective as more modern techniques but were shunned

because of the cost and labor required for their construction. The purpose of these lectures was twofold; to inform and to educate about the possibilities of taking steps to ensure a healthy future through conservation of land, energy and water.

Exploring the desert area of Asfan, which is on the outskirts of Jeddah city, can be very moving and rewarding. This is how it felt to each and every member of Rumman Company’s Fainak and Destination Jeddah teams which were whisked off to Asfan for a day of fun-filled activities.

Leaving Jeddah at precisely nine o’clock in the morning, the group of fifty people and a friendly guide set out for Moon Mountain (locally known as Jebal Al Qamr) where Khalid Khafagy, the trip coordinator, had a lot in store for the excited adventurers. On Asfan’s arid land, the enjoyment began in earnest; people hiked up dunes and rode on ATVs which left nice big tracks on the sand. Large tents were erected which provided a place for resting and an escape from the sun. The weather varied from bright sunlight to beautiful cloud cover and overall it was great for desert sports or for enjoying the gentle wind. A kite flying session also had many of the young men and women enthralled and proved to be a wonderful activity. Best of all, climbing atop Moon Mountain and having a view of the campsite, which seemed tiny from this altitude, made the trip worthwhile. At sunset, the whole group gathered around a bonfire, taking pleasure in flavorful sheesha and dining on great tasting barbequed food. This gave a nice feeling of camping out. By nightfall, the large caravan of satisfied thrill seekers started for Jeddah and took home lots of amazing memories. Carpets and rugs, the majority of which have been hand-woven, are to be found in this area and specifically on Al-Ghetreefi Street, where lines upon lines of shops are stocked with magnificently woven carpets that are no less than pieces of art. Cheap goods these are not, but they are definitely marked down from the prices that one is greeted with in high-end shopping districts of the city and in classy stores that carry the same quality. It is very easy to find a selection of Turkish, Iranian, Afghani and Pakistani carpets and rugs that come in colors that are pure and sharp and are adorned with intricate geometric patterns and rich motifs. Without a doubt, many of the carpets which hung on the walls of each and every store had never seen the inside of a factory; the mind-boggling designs and soft feel vouching for the painstaking hours that were spent by the weavers in creating them.

The Afghani shopkeepers and salesmen in this area are a friendly lot that take the time to assist you in making the right purchase. Most of the shops also have antiquities and other items that make great souvenirs and the shopkeepers help you in your desire to seek out a unique treasure which could be in the form of old Arabian tea pots, ornaments or elaborate rugs that look like they belonged to a palace some centuries ago. Foregoing materialistic and monetary gain for a more humane approach in order to win over a customer is what makes these kind-hearted salespeople a pleasure to do business with. And don’t forget that bargaining is part of the deal here and should be done with zest and without hesitation; if only to let you think that you got away with a steal! Apart from the shopping extravaganza that can be indulged in here, the soul of the visit is the glimpse you get of the daily life–kids playing in the adjacent narrow alleys; workers unloading new wares off a truck; a potato seller winding his way through the street. The contrasting sights and sounds of the day and then the night are a draw as well, but this is very likely the place to make a trip to for all sorts of lovely carpets–except the flying kind.

This high-end Egyptian coffee shop chain opened its doors to Jeddah residents on 26th of March at Le Château, which is across from Tujjar Jeddah off Tahliah Street. Cilantro is distinguished by its colorful dÊcor, warm atmosphere and renowned customer service and offers customers an exceptional variety of food and cool and hot beverages in a wonderful setting. Some of the freshly baked delights at this coffee shop include foccacia rosemary bread, cinnamon rolls and baguettes. Sambosak Ingredients: When it comes to maintaining a proper, healthy diet, it is a difficult challenge in times when families eat out or have food delivered to their homes frequently. Fast food is synonymous with all things unhealthy, especially for its high caloric values and for being packed with sodium and fat. So can the quick and often cheap temptation of fast food ever redeem itself as something better and fit for the body? All across the Middle-East, one fast food chain has been making healthy chicken meals from its very inception–that chain is Al-Tazaj Restaurants. For the past two decades, customers have been savoring Al-Tazaj’s specially prepared grilled chicken, which is cooked on a wood charcoal and is marinated in garlic and lime sauce. Accompanying the meal of half or whole chicken is freshly baked white flat bread or rice and a superb tahina sauce, made from sesame seeds. What makes the difference at Al-Tazaj is that the chicken that is served in its restaurants is given the highest-quality natural feed and is free of preservatives. The thirteen branches of Al-Tazaj Restaurants in Jeddah have the usual two sections; one for men only and the other for families. The family-friendly atmosphere and great service coupled with the delicious fare only goes to show that not all fast food can be deemed harmful for consumption, but can in fact be great tasting and healthy too.
PASTRY 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 tablespoon sugar 1 teaspoon salt 2 eggs, beaten 1 cup milk, warmed 1/3 cup corn oil
FILLING 2 tablespoons corn oil, for frying 2 medium onions, chopped 1lb ground beef or ground lamb 1 tablespoon ground cumin 1 tablespoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper
Preparation Method:
*Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. *To make the pastry, combine flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt in bowl. *Mix in oil, warm milk, and beaten eggs until a soft dough is formed. *Cut the dough into small 2 inch balls. *Cover and let rest for 15 minutes. Meanwhile prepare the filling by heating the oil in a large fry pan. *Add chopped onions, cook until soft. *Stir the ground meat in to the pan and add the cumin, salt, and pepper. *Fry until well cooked. *On a lightly floured work surface, roll out the pastry balls into 4-inch round circles. *Place a teaspoon of filling in the center of a rolled-out pastry. *Fold and press sides with the cutting wheel. *Repeat previous three steps for each pastry ball. *Deep fry for 1-2 minutes or until lightly browned. Coming into the restaurant, you instantly get a sense of luxury and elegance that you expect, given the reputation that Barnies Restorante has built over the years. After being greeted by one of the well trained waiters, you are given the choice of sitting inside the restaurant or in the balcony which allows you to enjoy the beautiful view for an extra charge of SR100 per person. Barnies Ristorante’ specialty is Italian food but it does include selective international dishes.With a variety of appetizers available, the most recommended is the Shrimp Tempura and Fried Calmari Ring. Both dishes are fresh and crispy and not at all oily. A few drops of lemon juice on both the dishes make them even more delicious and flavorful. If you are in the mood for Chicken or Veal, then Scallopini Di Polo is the right choice. Cooked in butter with a creamy sauce, each bite of the dish is a tender delight. The dish comes with a choice of French fries, mashed potatoes or sautéed vegetables. If the shrimp served in the appetizer is not enough, then do order the Jumbo Fried Shrimps; they are the best fried shrimps I have had in Jeddah. The appetizers and the entrees were cooked to perfection and therefore we couldn’t help 54 DESTINATION JEDDAH
ourselves but finish each and every dish leaving no space for dessert. Another trip to Barnies and another review just for their dessert will have to wait for another day. It is advisable to arrive early or to reserve a table in advance as the restaurant is always drawing a crowd. On a Tuesday afternoon we decided to visit the Tahlia Street branch. Upon entering the restaurant, we were struck by the feeling of a being in a modest Italian restaurant with an easy-going atmosphere that one can casually dine in. For an appetizer, it is recommend for any pizza lover to order their Pizza Bresaola. This pizza has a rectangular shape, with the crust open on the edges. It is made with Mozzarella cheese, air dried beef, olive oil, pesto and Italian herbs. Watching someone pick up a slice of this pizza with the melted cheese trying to hang on to the slice next to it is sure to make your mouth water. If you are in the mood for a salad, then you cannot go wrong with Insalata Cesare E Pollo. Made with fresh crunchy lettuce, creamy Caesar salad dressing and topped with slices of grilled chicken breast, this salad is an excellent choice for the light eater. It would be a crime to leave the restaurant without trying one of the pasta dishes. Lallo’s produces nineteen types of pasta in eleven flavors and six different fillings. We have tried the Ravioli Spinach Con Salsa Di Noci and we were not disappointed. Lastly, if you are looking for a warm welcome and excellent service then you should try Lallo. An Intelligent City Umm Al-Qura University hosted the Intelligent City Conference 2009 which had the participation of top international information and communication companies including Cisco, Zain Saudi Arabia, KEE International, Intel, and Microsoft. Makkah Governor Prince Khaled Al-Faisal inaugurated the conference organized by the holy city’s municipality in association with the Communications and Information Technology Commission and the Haj Research Center.The aim of the conference was to improve the services provided to Makkah’s citizens, residents and pilgrims and the focus was on best intelligent practices in cities, commercial and public facilities, intelligent habitats, buildings, and homes. It also addressed the specific needs and applications desired for Makkah to become a smart city. “The two-day forum is about expediting application of modern technologies in Makkah to facilitate the housing and transportation of pilgrims and other guests coming to the city,” declared Osama Al-Bar, Mayor of Makkah. “We also want to make Makkah a model for other Islamic cities.” Mayor Al-Bar elaborated that such conferences will contribute to improving the municipal services for both citizens and pilgrims. 62 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Three main topics that were of highest significance were presented to attendees. The first topic entailed the familiarization of the needs of smart cities and to review successful initiatives of new smart cities. The second topic initiated a discussion on smart buildings and homes and the latest international developments and the best examples of such buildings. Highlights included the use of mobile phones to control lights in intelligent homes and robust security systems and computer networks. The third topic brought to center-stage the needs of Makkah and how to transform it in to a city with intelligent capabilities. Prominent speakers cited the challenge of bringing about such a change and to accomplish the task on the basis of international standards. Taking pilgrims and visitors as a focal point, it was said that the city needs to be ready to provide the best services in any case. Many more topics were also covered and ranged from e-government, safety control systems and security applications to intelligent city management applications. It is without a doubt that the presence of intelligent city facilities will speed up communication with the outside world and boost cultural, economic and commercial development, Koshak said. It is also worth mentioning that the transformation of Makkah into an intelligent city will help address the needs of pilgrims from around the world. As head of the conference’s scientific committee, Mohammed Maqazi said “The pilgrims need accommodations, meals, information and communication channels, and various modes of transportation. A combination of the latest technologies that integrate fixed and wireless broadband networks, fixed and mobile GIS and GPS applications, and user-friendly information and communications points can greatly enhance the visitors’ experience, and the city’s objective of quality services to the visitors of the holy sites.”
The conference has paved a way in formulating a vision for the future of intelligent cities in the Kingdom in the light of evolving trends and global initiatives.

Leading a healthy and stress free life is most often thought to be a myth these days, but the simple truth is that many of us lack the motivation or see basic exercises as a chore. Trying to gain immediate beneficial results and not seeing any is also a deterrent when it comes to exercising although something that delivers a sense of well being soon afterwards is an age-old concept and physical therapy called Yoga.

But what is it you ask? Yoga is a dynamic system of physical exercises and an extremely valuable philosophy to apply to everyday life. The philosophy of yoga is complete detachment from reality, as we understand it. The lack of self-knowledge is thought to be the fundamental cause of many emotional and nervous problems and yoga enables us to live our lives at a higher and more fulfilling level.
The two threads of Hatha yoga are the postures and correct breathing (Pranayama). Breathing is the most important part of yoga. Breathing is not just maintaining life by respiration, but taking in the life force and circulating it throughout the body. The benefits of this form of yoga are many and include the strengthening of the spine and the development of suppleness and flexibility in the body, which is great for elderly people.
The aim of yoga is to help us to take control of our lives by learning to control the body, our breathing and the mind. The word yoga means union in Sanskrit language. Various types of yoga systems exist, each with its underlying philosophy, but the goal is always the same – to relax and fortify the body. The most popular form of yoga is Hatha yoga, which is taught by the author. This type of yoga is concerned with body control and consists of a series of exercises and postures or Asanas.
If we learned to have control over our lives by doing yoga and relaxation, especially deep nasal breathing, we can in no time discover that we have more energy than ever before. Above all, we can learn to cope with stress which in turn will make our days harmonious and full of life.
Hatha yoga is derived from two Sanskrit words; Ha symbolizing the sun and Tha symbolizing the moon.

Myth busted! You don’t have to go to Lake Nkuro to see the magnificent Greater Flamingo. They are right here––a surprise to most Jeddawis––on the city’s southern doorstep. The urban areas of Jeddah and the immediate surrounding countryside support a surprisingly diverse variety of birdlife. A popular pastime worldwide, bird watching – or “twitching” to the connoisseur– is an exciting activity as it takes one out of doors, engages the mind in a new area of interest and by default puts you in touch with the environment at close quarters. Take a trip out of town and just see how much wildlife you can encounter. What starts as a day’s outing might just trigger a lifetime’s interest and a very rewarding hobby. There are no age restrictions, the only requirements being a love for nature and a decent pair of binoculars. 66 DESTINATION JEDDAH

FACTS ABOUT FLAMINGOS
* The oldest known Flamingo, kept in a Zoo in Australia, is more than 75 years old; the exact age is not known since he was already a mature adult when he arrived in Adelaide. * Tallest ones have been measured with an impressive height of up to 187cm! Average height is between 110-150cm and the weight is usually 2-4kg. * There are three sub-species of the Greater Flamingo worldwide namely Phoenicoterus roseus, Phoenicoterus chilensis, and Phoenicoterus ruber. Of course, seagulls abound here. Six species dominate the shoreline: Yellow legged gull; Slender billed gull; White eyed gull (Lat. Ichthyaetus leucophthalmus endemic to the Red Sea and one of the world’s rarest gulls with an estimated 4000-6500 pairs), Black headed Gull and Lesser Black-backed gull and the Sooty gull being endemic to the seas around the Arabian Peninsula. Part of the addictive nature of birdwatching is the detail of each species. For example, the beak on the Sooty Gull is only red during their breeding season. So, spot the lothario in the flock! Other birds common along the shoreline include the little Green Heron, Grey Heron and Reef Heron that dresses itself in either black or white, White cheeked Tern, Lesser-crested Tern, Ringed Plover, and the Little Stints that feed on insects on the shoreline. There is also the Crab Plover that feeds on oyster, shells and crabs. It is a challenge and completely fascinating to learn about the various species of birds. Many have different colors and patterns as juveniles and then change their looks as an adult only after the first winter. Then there are many that confuse the beginner with their resemblance to a completely different species. Some sport different plumage in winter and summer, male and females may look different, and they may change their appearance during the breeding season. But that is all part of the intrigue and the constant challenge of twitching. From the middle of March to the end of April and again in October and November, birdwatchers turn their gaze heavenwards. Several thousands of Cranes, the Common Crane (Grus grus) and the Demoisell Crane (Anthropoides virgo) stream across the sky in raggedy skeins as they migrate north from Africa in the spring and back south in Autumn. They have flown the skies above where modern Jeddah stands as they have done for millennia. Flying in a strict V-formation to help reduce wind resistance and the expenditure of energy, they are clearly audible calling to one 68 DESTINATION JEDDAH
another in flight. They rotate their positions in the flock, as the position of leader at the tip of the formation is the most tiring. It is a stirring thought to see such unassuming teamwork from flights of birds. In the spring these birds enter the Red Sea from Bab el Mandab and follow the Saudi Arabian Coastline north of Jeddah to an aerial crossroad where the flocks continue their journey, crossing central Arabia towards Qassim, Hail and Hafer Al Batin. Thereafter they enter Iraq where they split to their breeding sites, which are Northeast Turkey, North Iraq, North Iran and Pakistan. The Kingdom’s hunting season is from December 1 until the end of February. To use a gun it has to be registered to the owner, a license is needed to hunt, and hunters are forbidden from using guns that can kill more than one bird at a time – specifically shotguns. It is forbidden in Islam to kill just for the sake of killing; you should eat the bird if you hunt it. There are a few hunters who have stopped using their guns and started to enjoy bird watching instead, learning about the habits of the birds and they are now truly enjoying and appreciating keeping the living ones alive. It is important to note that using nets to capture quail and other small birds is strictly illegal by law.

The Common Crane, the Demoiselle Crane, the White Stork and the Black Stork are some of the important bird species that the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies to.
The South Corniche, largely ignored by Jeddawis, is a rewarding area if you have the eyes – and the binoculars – to see it!
Al Suhaibany’s passion for bird watching is contagious, his personality and his position as a role model has helped influence many hunters to lay down their guns, swapping them for a pair of binoculars and a camera instead. They are now helping in recording species and data and have derived great satisfaction from protecting the birds. Al Suhaibany is the Coordinator & Scientific Officer of the Reef Chief organization. Reef Chief’s motto is “Dedicated to preserving the Red Sea” and it was founded by Tareq Taher who made a tremendous contribution to the eco system by replanting mangroves on Earth Day last year on the South Corniche. Mangrove areas are a very important habitat and are seen in some areas along the Corniche. The Red Sea has two native species of mangrove: Avicenna Marina and Rhizopora Mucronata. They help to protect the shoreline from erosion and protect the fringing coral reef by filtering and reducing sediments flowing into this fragile environment. They also host an incredible variety of marine species and provide a nursery for many different types of fish and invertebrates. Some varieties of fish spend either their entire life in mangrove areas, while many others use them as hatching grounds and nurseries.

Just as important as anything else in our lives is the plight of our diminishing blue, green marble of a planet, our home and the only place in the Milky Way we know of which gives us everything we need to survive. With that in mind, spreading environmentalism on a global scale is of the utmost importance and that’s what Earth Day hopes to achieve every year on April 22nd. The last few pages were filled with awe-inspiring photographs of birds along Jeddah’s Red Sea coast, but there is another angle to the coastline’s condition with the continued development and expansion—plastic items, soda cans, fishing lines and trash harmful to marine life which litter many beaches and fishing spots. All of us must realize that with a little bit of effort on our parts, Jeddah’s mesmerizing seaside can continue to sparkle for years to come.

Put garbage in its place. Use garbage bins or take back home what you bring to the beach (carry in, carry out), leaving only footprints in the sand.

Do not feed seagulls. This encourages them to become familiar with humans which in turn becomes a nuisance for beachgoers.

Litter is lethal to marine life. Avoid bringing disposable plastics to the beach, they do not biodegrade and can kill animals through entanglement and ingestion. Some plastics take over 400 years to break down in the marine environment, so dispose of them properly.

Take care when smoking. Cigarette filters are not biodegradable and can be lethal when eaten by birds and fish that mistake the cigarette filters for food. Better yet, don’t smoke on beaches.

Never leave fishing line on the beach. Fishing line can entangle birds, fish, turtles, and other animals. Plastic fishing line takes 600 years to break down in the marine environment.

Take part in a beach clean-up activity whenever it is organized in the city. Or conduct one on your own along with your friends.

Things to do in Mauritius…
• Tour the Moka mountains by quad bike, horse or 4-wheel drive at the accessible 1,500-hectare (3,700-acre) nature park of Domaine Les Pailles (www.domainelespailles.net). Travel to the sugar mill by train or horse-drawn carriage before dining in one of four restaurants.
• Tiny, rugged, volcanic Rodrigues Island (www.rodrigues-island.org) lies 550km (340 miles) northeast of Mauritius and is known as the ‘anti-stress’ island. The capital, Port Mathurin, is only seven streets wide, with a Creole population. Rodrigues offers walking, diving, kite-surfing and deep sea fishing.
• Head to Grand Baie, for water sports such as parasailing, an underwater walk, submarine and semi-submersible scooters. Or go to La Cuvette, a long silky beach with clear water between Grand Baie and Cap Malheureux for sailing, windsurfing and waterskiing. • Go diving on the west coast around Flicen-Flac or in the north, at Trou aux Biches or the Northern Islands from November to April. The Mauritius Scuba Diving Association (MSDA) can provide further information (www.msda-cmas.org). • Hike in the Black River Gorges National Park, a 6,794-hectare (16,788-acre) forest, to see indigenous plants, birds and wildlife. Black River Peak trail goes to Mauritius’ highest mountain, while the Maccabee Trail starts nearby and plunges into the gorge to Black River. • La Vanille Réserve des Mascareignes (www. lavanille-reserve.com) is commonly referred to as ‘The Crocodile Park’ for its thousands of Nile crocodiles. Embarking on joint promotional road shows, Emirates Airline and the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) took an initiative to highlight the Republic of Mauritius in four key cities across the Middle East over the course of a week, with one road show taking place in Jeddah on March 4, 2009. The Middle East road show is part of a long term campaign to promote the Republic of Mauritius as an exciting and unique holiday destination. Kicking off in Kuwait on March 1, 2009, the road show then traveled to Riyadh before arriving in Jeddah. The final stop was the city of Dubai. The four cities were carefully selected by Emirates and the MTPA due to their strong potential for travel. The Mauritian government delegation was headed by the Honourable Xavier-Luc Duval, Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Tourism and External Communications and Dr Karl Mootoosamy, Director of the MTPA, amongst others. A number of representatives from local Mauritian hotels and tour operators were also part of the road show. Emirates was represented by Badr Abbas, Emirates Regional Manager – Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Dina Al Herais – VP Commercial Operations – Emirates Holidays.

Hamza Shehata: Holder of Renovation Flag

The development following the great Arabic revolution, which first began from holy Makkah in 1916 against the Turkish occupation, is considered an era of openness, in which the public life flowed with sources of new cultures that arrived from Egypt and Al-Sham. So the plant grown in Hejaz called upon the great Arabic revolution more rapidly, thus being affected by the renewal spirit as it was allowed to absorb unsullied literature from abroad and imitate it in method of description and expression. This was recorded by the critic of this era Abdullah Abdulgabar. The subject was very strange and exciting to that extent that the Arabic writer Moheb Aldin Alkhattieb was surprised from what he saw: “The wave of reform in Hejaz came from the Fifth Street in New York”. Yes, the new sources of culture shook the brain of the plant. The young men were influenced by artistic prose innovated by authors overseas, especially in New York and Washington. Gibran Khalil Gibran, Elia Abi Madi and other migrant poets were themselves affected by Romantic literature pioneers such as Wiliam Blick, Wiliam Wordsworth, Payron, Chille and E.W. Merson. In an early photograph of Hamza Shehta, taken in 1934 in a studio in Makkah, when he was just twenty-four years old shows him sitting in the studio proudly with a book carrying him in melodrama emphasizing the accurate selection. This book, as expected, is a divan of poetry named (A Tear and A Smile) of Gibran Khalil Gibran. The value of Hamza Shehata is that he was a leader of this renewal front and his 90 DESTINATION JEDDAH
story is the story of one of the geniuses of this country. In the twentieth century, the expression “the peak that is known and not discovered” is attributed to his companion Aziz Diaa, the story of this great important intellectual appearing from forks of Makkah. He is a symbol of national origin, conflicted between the nature of the poet who loved life and its developed beauty and the nature of a philosopher looking for facts and hidden secrets. Shehata (1910-1972) is one of the pioneers in Saudi literature; the poet who holds true to the deeply rooted Hejazi poetry, continuing its fruitful era from Gahili to Hodel Abbasi era and doing so after centuries of failure, deterioration and drifting in muddy soil of imitation, solidity, static and lazy affection. He is the poet whose poetry attracts a whole generation. It is the pride of young men, the peak of the best of a generation; the genius young men who penetrated the horizon on lands of Hejaz and removed dust from literature and politics and based the foundation of development. When recent literature is born in Arabic, its birth is like a mutation… from the weakly rhymed prose, and artificial silly poetry that had no soul in the era of Othmani Turkish, suddenly the touch of the emigration and Gibran’s feelings were transmitted and we could notice this in what is written by Mohammad Biary and Ahmed Alsebaay in prose and Mohamed Omar Arab’s poetry; to accurate prose on hand of Mohammad Saeed Alamoudo and Hamed Kaaki; to the extreme boldness and eloquence poetry of Abdulwahab Ashi; to revolution on traditions and the importance of poem measure in Mohammad
Hassan Awad; and calling for reformation and glances from Albarodi by Mohammad Soror Saitan to eloquence romantic poetry with Hamza Shehata and Ahmed Khandil. This golden generation did not fear from cultural mixing and contact, but their insight and intelligence made them take the benefits and effects of this, so they took from it without complexes or void delusions. This was not strange of guardians of Makkah’s culture in which culture flowed like blood in vessels. The Hejazi literature became prominent since the Gahili era by through the peoples of Makkah, Madinah, and Taif with Arab groups who had different languages and tongues for religious and literary seasons, and from there it was transported to modernized cities and countries which had direct effect in development of their thinking and widening of their life by prominent new aesthetics. Ibn Masgah Al-Makki received Western music without drawbacks, taking from them the basis of Arabic composition, and combined with the master playing of Farsi instruments, allowing him to take the pioneering of what is called origin of Arabic song and music. The mix and contact of Hejazi young men bestowed them more critical awareness, expressive development and creative flow, but time did not steal from them the will of expanding literature with an independent personality that became apparent in many works carrying special Hejazi features with a local artistic stroke. وكانت النهضة التي أعقبت الثورة العربية الكبرى التي ُأطلقت رصاصتها األولى من مكة املكرمة عام 1916م ،ضد اإلحتالل والتغلّب التركي ،مبثابة عهد انفتاح ،حفلت فيها احلياة العامة مبصادر الثقافة اجلديدة مبا ورد من مطابع مصر والشام « ..فكانت النابتة التي نشأت في احلجاز على صيحات الثورة العربية الكبرى أسرع من غيرها في التأثر بروح التجديد ،فقد أتيح لها أن تتصل بأدب املهجر وتنفعل به ،وحتتذي حذوه في طرائق التصوير والتعبير جميعا» – كما يذهب ناقد املرحلة عبدالله عبداجلبار. كان األمر شديد الغرابة واإلثارة في آن .الى ح ّد أن الكاتب العربي ُمحب الدين اخلطيب كان يصرخ ُمندهش ًا مما يراه « :ان موجة التجديد في احلجاز قد جاءت من الشارع اخلامس في نيويورك» ..نعم ،لق ّد خلّبت مصادر الثقافة اجلديدة ل ّب النابتة املتأدبة أميا اعجاب .لقد تأثر الشبان بطرق النثر الفني ،التي ابتكرها أدباء املهجر خصوص ًا في نيويورك وبوسطن؛ فما جبران خليل جبران ،وايليا أبو ماضي، وغيرهم من الشعراء املهجريني، سوى املتأثرين ،بدورهم ،بأعمدة األدب الرومانطيقي ،عند وليام بليك، ووليام ووردزورث ،وبايرون ،وتشيلي، وأميرسون. وفي صورة فوتوغرافية باكرة حلمزة شحاتة أخذها في شرخ الصبا والشباب عام 1934م ،في أحد استديوهات مكة ،لم يتجاوز عمره حينها األربع والعشرين ربيع ًا ،ظهر الشحاتة قاعد ًا في استيديو التصوير، متباهي ًا بكتا ٍب أمسك بناصيته في حركة ميلودرامية بارزة تُشير الى عناية االختيار الفائق ..كان ذلك الكتاب ،كما يمُ كن أن نتوقع ،ديوان (دمعة وابتسامة) ُ جلبران خليل ُجبران. وقيمة حمزة شحاتة ،أنه الفاصلة في مقدمة تلك الطليعة املُجددة .وحكايته هي حكاية عبقري من عباقرة هذا البلد في القرن العشرين .حكاية «القمة التي ُعرفت ولم تُكتشف» كما في تعبير رفيق دربه عزيز ضياء. حكاية ذلك العقل النقدي العظيم الذي خرج من بني أضلع شعاب مكة ووِهادها ،والعبقرية التي ُولدت ودرجت على تراب أرضها قمة DESTINATION JEDDAH 91
شامخة وقفت األمة على أبعاد تخومها ،فيما أخفقت في استكناه مدارجها ،ففاتها نصب ألو ّيتها املرفرفة على سفحها الالمع .هو رمز املُعاصرة الوطني الذي تنازعته طبيعة الشاعر املشغوف باحلياة وجمالها املتطور ،وطبيعة الفيلسوف املتطلع الى حقائقها وأسرارها املكنونة. ان الشحاتة ( )1972-1910أحد أقطاب نهضة األدب السعودي احلديث .انه البيان
الشعري الذي حمل راية الشعر احلجازي العريقُ ،مستئنف ًا عصوره اخلصيبة من قرون من اجلاهلي الى العباسي الذهبي ،بعد ٍ اإلنحطاط واخل ّيبة والتم ُرغ في ُوحول التقليد واجلمود والسكون واالستكانة والوجدان الكسيف .انه القامة الشعرية التي استحوذ جيل بأكمله :هو مفخرة الشباب شِع ُرها على ٍ والنابتة املُتحررة ،و ذروة جيل الهوادي والطالئع والنهضة والصفوة -الفت ّية األفذاذ الذين ش ّقوا دروب اآلفاق التي كانت تتالمح على أرض احلجاز؛ نفضوا الركام من األدب
والسياسة ،وأرسوا فيه قواعد النهضة ،وتطلعوا الى مراكز احلضارة واملدن ّية رغبة اللحاق بها . وحني ُولد األدب احلديث في اجلزيرة العربية كانت والدته مُتثل طفرة ..فمن النثر الركيك املسجوع ،والشعر السخيف املُتكلف الذي الروح فيه في عهد األتراك العثمانيني ،ننتقل فجأة الى البصمات املهجرية واللمسات ا ُ جلبرانية ،نلمحها فيما كتب محمد بياري وأحمد السباعي من نثر ،وما عارض به محمد عمر عرب من شعر ،الى نثر ُمحتنك على يد محمد سعيد العامودي وحامد كعكي ،الى ُجرأة فائقة وجزالة شعرية عند عبدالوهاب آشي ،الى ثورة على التقاليد وريادة لقصيدة التفعيلة عند محمد حسن ع ّواد ،ومناداة باإلصالح وحملات من البارودي عند محمد سرور ص ّبان ،الى جزالة شعرية رومانطيقية عند حمزة شحاتة وأحمد قنديل. ذلك اجليل الذهبي ،لم يخشى دعوات اإلختالط واإلحتكاك الثقافي ،بل تلقفت فطنتهم وزكانتهم فوائدها وآثارها فانكبوا عليها دون ُعقَد أو أوهام باطلة ..واليبدو ذلك غريب ُا على َق ّيمِ ي الثقافة املك ّية التي جتري في أوصالها مظاهر التثاقف مجرى الدم في األوردة لقد برز األدب احلجازي و َرقّ منذالعصر اجلاهلي على أثر اختالط أهل مكة واملدينة والطائف بحشود العرب وصنوفهم من مختلفي اللهجات واللغات في أيام املواسم الدينية واألدبية ،ونتيجة تنقلهم في املدن واألمصار املتمدنة ،مما كان له تأثير مباشر في تطور حياتهم الفكرية واتساع حياتهم بألوان جمالية وفنية جديدة وبارزة ،وابن مسحج امل ّكي تلقى األحلان الرومية دون غضاضة أو نفور فاتخذ منها قاعدة صناعة التلحني والوضع العربي ،كما حذق في الضرب على اآلالت الفارسية ،حتى تهيأت له ريادة ما بات ُيعرف بنشأة الغناء واملوسيقى العربية . خالصة القول ..لقد أكسب االختالط واالحتكاك ،ناشئة احلجاز ،الكثير من الوعي النقدي ،وال ُرقي التعبيري ،والدفق االبداعيَ ،بيد أنه ،وفي ذات الوقت ،لم يسلبهم ارادة بلورة أدب ذي شخصية ُمستقلة ظهرت على مناذجه العديدة املسحة احلجازية اخلاصة وجتلّت فيه خصائص األثر الفني احمللي .

The development following the great Arabic revolution, which first began from holy Makkah in 1916 against the Turkish occupation, is considered an era of openness, in which the public life flowed with sources of new cultures that arrived from Egypt and Al-Sham (countries of Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Lebanon). “So the plant grown in Hejaz called upon the great Arabic revolution more rapidly, thus being affected by the renewal spirit as it was allowed to absorb unsullied literature from abroad and imitate it in method of description and expression,” as was recorded by the critic of this era Abdullah Abduljabar. The subject was very strange and exciting to that extent that the Arabic writer Moheb Aldin Alkhateeb was surprised from what he saw: “The wave of reform in Hejaz came from New York’s Fifth Avenue”. Yes, the new sources of culture shook the brain of the plant. The young men were influenced by artistic prose that was improved by authors overseas, especially in New York and Boston. Gibran Khalil Gibran, Elia Abi Madi and other migrant poets were themselves affected by Romantic literature pioneers such as Wiliam Blick, Wiliam Wordsworth, Payron, Chille and E.W. Merson. In an early photograph of Hamza Shehata, taken in 1934 in a studio in Makkah, when he was just twenty-four years old shows him sitting in the studio proudly with a book that was seeped in melodrama and emphasized his choice. This book, as expected, is a divan of poetry named ‘A Tear and A Smile’ by Gibran Khalil Gibran. The value of Hamza Shehata is that he was a leader 90 DESTINATION JEDDAH
of this renewal front and his story is the story of one of the geniuses of this country. In the twentieth century, the expression “the peak that is known and not discovered” is attributed to his companion Aziz Diaa, the story of this great important intellectual appearing from forks of Makkah. He is a symbol of national origin, conflicted between the nature of the poet who loved life and its developed beauty and the nature of a philosopher looking for facts and hidden secrets. Shehata (1910-1972) is one of the pioneers in Saudi literature; the poet who holds true to the deeply rooted Hejazi poetry, continuing its fruitful era from Jahilia (pre-Islamic Arabia) to the golden Abbasid Caliphate era and doing so after centuries of failure, deterioration and drifting in muddy soil of imitation, solidity, static and lazy affection. He is the poet whose poetry attracts a whole generation. It is the pride of young men, the peak of the best of a generation; the genius young men who penetrated the horizon on lands of Hejaz and removed dust from literature and politics and based the foundation of development. When recent literature is born in Arabic, its birth is like a mutation; from the weakly rhymed prose, and artificial silly poetry that had no soul in the era of the Ottoman Turks, suddenly the touch of the emigration and Gibran’s feelings were transmitted and we could notice this in what is written by Mohammad Biary and Ahmed Alsebaay in prose and Mohamed Omar Arab’s poetry; to accurate prose on hand of Mohammad Saeed Alamoudo and Hamed Kaaki; to the extreme boldness and eloquence poetry of Abdulwahab Ashi; to revolution
on traditions and the importance of poem meter in Mohammad Hassan Awad; and calling for reformation and glances from Albarodi by Mohammad Soror Sabban to eloquence romantic poetry with Hamza Shehata and Ahmed Qandil. This golden generation did not fear from cultural mixing and contact, but their insight and intelligence made them take the benefits and effects of this, so they took from it without complexes or void delusions. This was not strange of guardians of Makkah’s culture in which culture flowed like blood in vessels. The Hejazi literature became prominent since the Jahilia era through the peoples of Makkah, Madinah, and Taif with Arab groups who had different languages and tongues for religious and literary seasons, and from there it was transported to modernized cities and countries which had direct effect in development of their thinking and widening of their views by prominent new aesthetics. Ibn Meshij Al-Makki received Western music without drawbacks, taking from them the basis of Arabic composition, and combined with the master playing of Persian instruments, allowing himself to pioneer what is called the origin of Arabic song and music. The mix and contact of Hejazi young men bestowed them more critical awareness, expressive development and creative flow, but time did not steal from them the will of expanding literature with an independent personality that became apparent in many works carrying special Hejazi features with a local artistic stroke. حمزة شحاتة .. حامل راية التجديد محمود عبدالغني صباغ
كانت النهضة التي أعقبت الثورة العربية الكبرى التي ُأطلقت رصاصتها األولى من مكة املكرمة عام 1916م ،ضد اإلحتالل والتغلّب التركي ،مبثابة عهد انفتاح ،حفلت فيها احلياة العامة مبصادر الثقافة اجلديدة مبا ورد من مطابع مصر والشام« ..فكانت النابتة التي نشأت في احلجاز على صيحات الثورة العربية الكبرى أسرع من غيرها في التأثر بروح التجديد ،فقد أتيح لها أن تتصل بأدب املهجر وتنفعل به ،وحتتذي حذوه في طرائق التصوير والتعبير جميع ًا» – كما يذهب ناقد املرحلة عبدالله عبداجلبار. كان األمر شديد الغرابة واإلثارة في آن .إلى ح ّد أن الكاتب العربي ُمحب الدين اخلطيب كان يصرخ ُمندهش ًا مما يراه« :إن موجة التجديد في احلجاز قد جاءت من الشارع اخلامس في نيويورك» ..نعم ،لق ّد خلّبت مصادر الثقافة اجلديدة ل ّب النابتة املتأدبة أميا أعجاب .لقد تأثر الشبان بطرق النثر الفني ،التي ابتكرها أدباء املهجر خصوص ًا في نيويورك وبوسطن؛ فما جبران خليل جبران ،وايليا أبو ماضي ،وغيرهم من الشعراء املهجريني، سوى املتأثرين ،بدورهم ،بأعمدة األدب الرومانطيقي ،عند وليام بليك، ووليام ووردزورث ،وبايرون ،وتشيلي، وأميرسون. وفي صورة فوتوغرافية باكرة حلمزة شحاتة أخذها في شرخ الصبا والشباب عام 1934م ،في أحد استديوهات مكة، لم يتجاوز عمره حينها األربع والعشرين ربيع ًا ،ظهر الشحاتة قاعد ًا في استديو التصوير ،متباهي ًا بكتاب أمسك بناصيته في حركة ميلودرامية بارزة تُشير الى عناية االختيار الفائق ..كان ذلك الكتاب، كما يمُ كن أن نتوقع ،ديوان (دمعة وابتسامة) ُ جلبران خليل ُجبران. وقيمة حمزة شحاتة ،أنه الفاصلة في مقدمة تلك الطليعة املُجددة .وحكايته هي حكاية عبقري من عباقرة هذا البلد في القرن العشرين .حكاية «القمة التي ُعرفت ولم تُكتشف» كما في تعبير رفيق دربه عزيز ضياء. حكاية ذلك العقل النقدي العظيم الذي خرج من بني أضلع شعاب مكة ووِهادها ،والعبقرية التي ُولدت ودرجت على تراب أرضها قمة شامخة وقفت األمة على أبعاد تخومها ،فيما DESTINATION JEDDAH 91
أخفقت في استكناه مدارجها ،ففاتها نصب ألو ّيتها املرفرفة على سفحها الالمع .هو رمز املُعاصرة الوطني الذي تنازعته طبيعة الشاعر املشغوف باحلياة وجمالها املتطور ،وطبيعة الفيلسوف املتطلع الى حقائقها وأسرارها املكنونة. إن الشحاتة ( )1972-1910أحد أقطاب نهضة األدب السعودي احلديث .إنه البيان الشعري الذي حمل راية الشعر احلجازي
العريقُ ،مستئنف ًا عصوره اخلصيبة من اجلاهلي قرون من اإلنحطاط الى العباسي الذهبي ،بعد ٍ واخل ّيبة والتم ُرغ في ُوحول التقليد واجلمود والسكون واالستكانة والوجدان الكسيف .انه جيل القامة الشعرية التي استحوذ شِع ُرها على ٍ بأكمله :هو مفخرة الشباب والنابتة املُتحررة ،و ذروة جيل الهوادي والطالئع والنهضة والصفوة الفت ّية األفذاذ الذين ش ّقوا دروب اآلفاقالتي كانت تتالمح على أرض احلجاز؛ نفضوا الركام من األدب والسياسة ،وأرسوا فيه قواعد النهضة ،وتطلعوا الى مراكز احلضارة واملدن ّية رغبة اللحاق بها .
وحني ُولد األدب احلديث في اجلزيرة العربية كانت والدته مُتثل طفرة ..فمن النثر الركيك املسجوع ،والشعر السخيف املُتكلف الذي الروح فيه في عهد األتراك العثمانيني ،ننتقل فجأة الى البصمات املهجرية واللمسات ا ُ جلبرانية ،نلمحها فيما كتب محمد بياري وأحمد السباعي من نثر ،وما عارض به محمد عمر عرب من شعر ،الى نثر ُمحتنك على يد محمد سعيد العامودي وحامد كعكي ،الى ُجرأة فائقة وجزالة شعرية عند عبدالوهاب آشي ،الى ثورة على التقاليد وريادة لقصيدة التفعيلة عند محمد حسن ع ّواد، ومناداة باإلصالح وحملات من البارودي عند محمد سرور ص ّبان ،الى جزالة شعرية رومانطيقية عند حمزة شحاتة وأحمد قنديل. ذلك اجليل الذهبي ،لم يخشى دعوات اإلختالط واإلحتكاك الثقافي ،بل تلقفت فطنتهم وزكانتهم فوائدها وآثارها فانكبوا عليها دون ُعقَد أو أوهام باطلة ..واليبدو ذلك غريب ُا على َق ّيمِ ي الثقافة املك ّية التي جتري في أوصالها مظاهر التثاقف مجرى الدم في األوردة -لقد برز األدب احلجازي و َرقّ منذ العصر اجلاهلي على أثر اختالط أهل مكة واملدينة والطائف بحشود العرب وصنوفهم من مختلفي اللهجات واللغات في أيام املواسم الدينية واألدبية ،ونتيجة تنقلهم في املدن واألمصار املتمدنة ،مما كان له تأثير مباشر في تطور حياتهم الفكرية واتساع حياتهم بألوان جمالية وفنية جديدة وبارزة ،وابن مسحج امل ّكي تلقى األحلان الرومية دون غضاضة أو نفور فاتخذ منها قاعدة صناعة التلحني والوضع العربي ،كما حذق في الضرب على اآلالت الفارسية ،حتى تهيأت له ريادة ما بات ُيعرف بنشأة الغناء واملوسيقى العربية . خالصة القول ..لقد أكسب االختالط واالحتكاك ،ناشئة احلجاز ،الكثير من الوعي النقدي ،وال ُرقي التعبيري ،والدفق االبداعيَ ،بيد أنه ،وفي ذات الوقت ،لم يسلبهم ارادة بلورة أدب ذي شخصية ُمستقلة ظهرت على مناذجه العديدة املسحة احلجازية اخلاصة وجتلّت فيه خصائص األثر الفني احمللي . وفي العدد املُقبل ،نُكمل ..
