Minister Ali Ibrahim Al-Naimi, Chairman KAUST Board of Trustees, Dr. Choon Fong Shih, KAUST founding President, and his wife.

KAUST Inauguration Professor Choon Fong Shih, President of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has made it his personal mission, “To help shape this new university of scholars, scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs, spurring them to pursue the big questions in science and take on the global challenges facing humanity.” He delivered this message for the newest university in the 21st century during the evening inauguration program before an audience of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah, Minister Al-Naimi, Chairman, KAUST Board of Trustees and distinguished guests in attendance in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia.

The Cool Factor The evening’s program broadcast live on local channels and webcast in it’s entirety through the KAUST.edu.sa website was a new technological achievement that went off flawlessly. Starting with great technology, the university built a special inauguration site and had been counting down the days, minutes and seconds until the inauguration September 23, 2009. The webcast allowed brothers, sisters, families and friends far away to experience and witness the inauguration festivities. Across boundaries, countries and continents, viewers watched from the comfort of their own homes.

The Wow Factor The massive campus of 16 sq km on land, (and 20 sq km of protected marine sanctuaries in the Red Sea) is just a 45 minute drive north of Jeddah. Dynamic solar towers can be seen from the highway and anchor the main campus research buildings, library and museum.

Discovery Walk is a pathway linking all buildings for easy access and the Rotunda foyer is a center point for campus orientation, directions and meetings.

A stunning view of the KAUST campus harbor and Red Sea out to The Beacon are awe inspiring and a marvel of engineering. Eleven thousand trees line the campus and an attention to sustainability and energy efficiency has resulted in KAUST being awarded the prestigious LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certification. A campus nurturing a new, proactive campuswide green consciousness.

Schools of Jeddah:

Where are your kids off to this semester?

By Dina Ismail

With students returning to school, newcomers to Jeddah have the agonizing task of finding a school for their children. Luckily, there is no shortage of schools to choose from. Private schools in Saudi Arabia are generally divided into two categories: those following predominantly national curriculums and those based on international curriculums. Schools following national guidelines contain strong English programs and may even have English as the language of instruction while international schools usually have only English or some other language as the main language. The schools listed below are divided into English/Foreign Language Schools and English/Arabic Schools.

English/Foreign Language Schools:

- American International School of Jeddah** (AISJ formerly PCS) Established in 1955 this school started under the name ‘Parent’s Cooperative School’ mainly as a school for expat children. Today AISJ offers an American curriculum, a mix of upward of 900 students from a diversity of countries and K-12 American International Standards faculty and programs. Advanced Placement (AP) programs and college placement available. www.aisj.edu.sa Tel: +9662-662-0051

- French International School of Jeddah Established in 1966, the Ecole Française de Jeddah is the only educational institution in Jeddah operating under a French curriculum. Offering secondary diplomas in social economics, literature, and science. This school has over 1,000 students, native and non native French speakers and a cothe majority of which are Lebanese nationals, and is a co-educational facility. www.lyceefrancaisdjeddah.com Tel: +9662-691-8848

10 DESTINATION JEDDAH

- British International School of Jeddah** (Continental School) The Continental School was established in 1977 as a cooperative school between the British and Belgian embassies to educate their expat children in a challenging environment. Supported by Sheikh Abdullah Baksh and his sons, the Continental School opened their first purpose-built facility in the Basateen residential district of North Jeddah. One of the most prestigious institutions in Jeddah, the co-ed Continental School was among the first in the world to implement the International GCSE examinations and also offers the globally competitive International Baccalaureate Program. www.continentalschool.com Tel: +9662-699-0019

**Saudi students are permitted to enroll in this institution only with an official permission from the Ministry of Education.

Arabic/English Schools:

- My Little House School Established in 1982, the language of instruction at My Little House School is English, including the Government English Syllabus as well as elements of the British Curriculum. Initially a nursery and kindergarten, My Little House has expanded to include elementary and secondary levels. My Little House has separate sections for male and female students. www.littlehouseschools.com Tel: +9662-665-2490

- Dar Al-Fikr Dar Al-Fikr was established in 1985 and is compromised of K-12 levels. It is unique among other similar institutions in that it has set up a “United Fikr Program” which integrates elements of both the national and international curriculum. The main language of instruction is English and its 750 students undergo vigorous college preparation at the secondary level.

- Jeddah Knowledge School A leading innovative school since 1996, Jeddah Knowledge School is known for its quality of education, low teacher-student ratio, well-rounded environment catering to all aspects of a student’s needs, and its commitment to academic excellence. The school is recognized for its dedication to international education, while ensuring that students remain firmly rooted in their own culture. Upon graduation, students receive either an American Diploma or IB Diploma. www.jks.edu.sa Tel: +9662-691-7367

- Dar Al-Hanan A pioneer in Saudi female education, Queen Effat Al Thunayyan established Dar Al-Hanan in 1955 as the first private educational institution for females in Saudi Arabia. Dar Al-Hanan is also the oldest school for girls in the Kingdom and one with a long and rich history of distinguished alumnae. www.dhs.edu.sa Tel: +920-029-669

JCCI elections: Sami Bahrawi “Think globally, act locally”

Sami Bahrawi speaking at the 2007 Jeddah Economic Forum.

The elections starting the week of October 10th have caused quite a stir in Jeddah’s business community with a shake up in the electoral process of the Board of Directors at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) this year. One of the many voices that caught the eye of Destination Jeddah is Sami Bahrawi whose extensive experience as a businessman in Jeddah’s business community aims to bring change to the JCCI. 12 DESTINATION JEDDAH

In the past, elections for the four-year positions on the Board of Directors of the JCCI were conducted by candidates forming committees and running for office. This year, however, only individual members are allowed to run for office. “The board is very broad and it should be, but I think I would bring a new perspective,” Bahrawi said in a telephone interview. Apart from being an accomplished businessman for the last 15 years, Bahrawi is also a core member of the international relations segment of the Jeddah Economic Forum. This global component is one of the key factors, which he feels would give the JCCI more of an international appeal in helping Jeddah grow on an international level as well as locally. “Think globally, but act locally. We should continue to have relations with organizations outside in order to learn from them and cooperate with them,” he said. Part of his plan is to introduce initiatives which would be built on Jeddah’s already successful attributes, both as a port as well as a local tourism destination. Nevertheless, he also wants initiatives to be purpose driven as well as financially worthwhile. “Many

times initiatives which are purely based on general good tend to move much more slowly than initiatives with a financial goal.” Bahrawi is eager to move on “ideas that would support the Makkah region, bringing it to the first world,” Bahrawi said, “as well as any opportunities along the way that will make Jeddah more competitive.” “What I want to make sure is that people understand the importance of coming out to vote,” he said. Only individuals who are registered at the JCCI as business owners are eligible to vote and Bahrawi said the change in voting has deflated excitement over the upcoming election. “Voters may think their vote is insignificant, since previously they had 12 votes, but now they have just one. Now their votes are even more important because they cannot be recovered (by a group election).” With a solid plan for bringing more business to Jeddah, Bahrawi’s confident air will not only be a boon for the JCCI, but also for the many entrepreneurs that form the economic backbone of this port city.

MASTURAH

The Perfect Getaway By Serene Feteih

I always wondered how much fun it would be to go on a camping trip where you could experience beautiful landscapes, the sea, wildlife and sports all in one place. I no longer wonder where such a destination could exist thanks to a 2 day DoMore trip to Masturah north of Jeddah about 160km. Known as an eco-friendly attraction of Saudi Arabia, Masturah’s protected mangrove trees along the shoreline play an important part in the local ecosystem. 18 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Day 1 Packed and ready to go, a friend and I arrived at the Corniche meeting point and an hour later, when all of the other campers had been accounted for, we were on our way. Masturah is a two hour short drive north-east of Jeddah, a doable trip over the weekend for adventurers. On arrival, we saw the entire camp had already been set up. Breakfast was being served in the main tent and everyone gathered to enjoy a hearty first meal and get acquainted with each other.

Some went for a swim in the Red Sea, while children played in the open desert. Many tried out the SeaBob, a cross between a jetski and a bodyboard, which turned out to be an exhilarating underwater activity. Horse and camel rides were being thoroughly enjoyed as well and some even took to riding motor bikes on the beach. Others just lazed about in the sun with a book or took a nap. Before lunch, several campers had played a round of the card game UNO.

DESTINATION JEDDAH 19

As the sun started to set and the heat became somewhat bearable, a friend and I got on a motorbike and headed towards the mountains where we rode alongside a herd of camels. Returning to the campsite, I decided to take a walk and appreciate our beautiful settings and enjoyed a much needed escape from city life. Nightfall presented another mood as a bonfire was built at the campsite. People relaxed in front of the bonfire or played a game of charades while others sat in the main tent socializing. Of course, you can’t go on a camping trip without having sizzling burgers and hot dogs for dinner! Afterwards, the day’s many activities finally caught up with me. Feeling exhausted, I decided to call it a night.

20 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Day 2 The start of the beautiful day began with a cup of sweetened tea and a light breakfast buffet with bread, cheeses, deli, and scrambled eggs. The sun soon bombarded us with scorching heat, so it was time for me to try out the SeaBob and take a swim to cool off. Once you’re out of the water, the breeze keeps you much cooler and the heat becomes more bearable. Lunch this time around was a bit late but was worth the wait. Freshly fried Najil on a bed of white rice with tahini and tomato salad on the side was presented to a hungry

group of campers! As soon as lunch was over, we took some group photos while the buses were being loaded and readied to return us back to life in the fast lane. Thanks to the destination management company, DoMore National Tourism, this was an eye-opening trip; there is so much to see in the Kingdom and it is worth noting that professional, trustworthy tourism excursion camps are worthwhile for residents and visitors. This is just the first of many more trips that I will be undertaking along with my family. We definitely want to “DoMore.”

Café Ceramique:

A Taste For Art, A Place For Family by Dina Ismail, Photos by Michael Bou-Nacklie

Café Ceramique, located in Stars Avenue Mall, is a place that has something for everyone. This family-friendly café has an appealing menu that includes not only the time-tested and loved combinations of salads and sandwiches but also a few novelties –– bagels, for instance. What really sets café Ceramique apart is the family-oriented atmosphere. As one of Jeddah’s few non-smoking venues, Café Ceramique’s accommodating staff and its strategic location inside a luxury mall ensures that everyone has a satisfactory dining experience apart from having quality family time together. The concept of Café Ceramique is 22 DESTINATION JEDDAH

definitely inspired. A self-described ‘part café, part artist’s studio’, Café Ceramique allows customers to engage both their artistic and gastronomical desires. A welllit space with iron-wrought chairs and tables, the real appeal of Café Ceramique is revealed on its walls. Shelves lined with bisqueware (ceramic) in every size and shape adorn every wall, inviting customers to paint everything from a turtle to a teapot.

On our visit, we partook in the ‘Toughin-the-Gulf’, which was a simple but not too groundbreaking interpretation of a club sandwich. The Steak & Brie Bagel, which came on a sesame seed bagel and was accompanied by french fries, was a refreshing take on the ubiquitous steak and cheese sandwich found in the majority of Jeddah restaurants. Families will definitely flock to Café Ceramique as the place to go for a means of entertainment that the whole family can enjoy while savoring a meal that is varied enough for adults yet appealing to children as well. Café Ceramique is unique in its ideology and invites customers to not only enjoy their creativity but to share it with their friends and family. Location: Star Avenue Mall, Malek road. and Sari st. Inside the spacious Bait Al-Bont National Museum eight photographers display their work from around the Middle-East with many works displayed as slideshows accompanied by audio interviews related to the subjects.

My Father’s House:

The Architecture of Cultural Heritage By Michael Bou-Nacklie

Few know the Middle-East better than those born and raised in the culture and that is what a recent exhibition by the British Council hopes to capitalize on. “The speed with which the Gulf is developing is a remarkable phenomenon,” wrote Andrea Rose, director of Visual Arts for My Father’s House: the Architecture of Cultural Heritage. “In its wake follow questions about authenticity, sustainability, identity and cultural values.” 24 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Two examples of the work on display at the exhibition by students in the workshops include Ebtesam Abdullah ALHANOUF - Woman laughing (top) and Salma Enani - Jeddah Faces (bottom).

Inside the hall just off the Corniche in Balad, this wake comes crashing out of the images of eight the photographers, five from the Middle-East and three from the UK; each bringing their own interpretation of how the region has shifted. The exhibition will continue for three weeks from Sept 27 - Oct 12 and will travel onwards to Qatar, Kuwait and then to its final destination in the UK. Forming a part of the exhibition are works

from a workshop instructed by professional photographer and Magnum award hopeful, Olivia Arthur. In an interview a year ago, Arthur said she was somewhat frustrated with the progress of the workshop since many of the students were not realizing “the only person who could make them better photographers is themselves.” However, almost a year later, Arthur has a much different tune. She said the quality

of the work has remained constant but the students have become more focused and have been able to structure their ideas around themes rather than single “pretty images.” “I hope that other young women here will see the exhibition and be inspired by the work,” Arthur said in an E-mail interview. “The fact that these projects were produced over the course of two weeks is very impressive and I’d like to think that people would come and think Wow, ok we can do that too!” Despite the increase in exposure which the Middle-East has received, Arthur said that Saudi Arabia has been left out and consequently very little is still known about “this country and particularly about women.” “When I was first approached about the workshop, I had no idea what to expect or what they would be able to do,” she said. “I thought they might be much more restricted in what they were able to do but what I have found is that the main restrictions are those of their families. DESTINATION JEDDAH 25

Some were much freer to do their work than others but that is a cultural thing and not the restrictions of the country, which I think is an important distinction to make.” Sean Williams, head of Art Services for the British Council and curator for the exhibition, said the exhibition is a look into Arab societies by Arab photographers rather than Westerns looking in. “All of the photographs are different but there is something uniquely out of place,” he said with a smile. “One example is of women praying. I’ve seen many taken by Western photographers, but the ones here… they are startlingly real. There’s more humanity about them. I think that’s the individual gaze (coming) from someone who understands it and views it not as something of curiosity. It’s a reality, it’s a more personal observation, they’re looking at different things and I think that comes across in the photographs.”

The Best Kept

Arab Secret

Ashi Studio

By Michael Bou-Nacklie

With a muted roar of fall inspiration, Ashi’s new collection burst through the pages of Elle Oriental magazine as well as the July cover. The power of the designs is not in flashy colors or extravagant designs. No, its strength is in its beautiful and intricate simplicity, a simplicity which has set the blogosphere on fire with enthusiasm hailing him as one of the fastest rising new Arab designers.

28 DESTINATION JEDDAH

With flowing gowns and full designs, Ashi’s new collection is something of an iconic style with similarities to fashiongreats like Karl Lagerfeld. Through his stylized simplicity Ashi tells a story with everyone of his collections. “My last collection was based on schizophrenia… the fall/winter collection is inspired by an Iranian movie, “Color of Paradise.” Despite having worked in some of the Middle-East’s biggest fashion houses with the likes of Elie Saab, he says his ideas are uniquely his own and he draws very little from his experiences with the great Arab fashion houses. His previous collection, on display on Future TV’s Project Fashion program (the Middle-East’s version of the US hit show Project Runway) won him the 2007 “Arab Designer of the Year” award. The story behind the line was a girl who after mourning the loss of her sister, creates a new persona to fill the gap left by her late sibling.

DESTINATION JEDDAH 29

His new collection has a similarly dark theme to it. This movie story revolves around a young blind boy in Tehran who is seen as a burden of bad luck by his in-laws. This leads to a life of solitude in his own mind. Using this as the crux of his design, Ashi’s new collection is a rich collection of beige to dark colors emphasizing on folds and layering in an imaginary garden of black and white flowers. The blind boy is represented by the simple color scheme of beige to dark colors, which although considered to be drab and uninteresting, culminate in one of the most stunning collections of the year. With a concise understanding of the female form, Ashi utilizes well thought out drapery to maximize his pieces and give life and vision to the blind boy who dreams of beauty in the absence of light.

Jimmy Choo

Teams up with H&M

DJ Magazine interviews Tamara Mellon, Jimmy Choo Founder & President

Left, Tamara Mellon, Founder & President Right, Margreta van den Bosch, Creative advisor, H&M

Why has Jimmy Choo decided to join the H&M brand? Is this part of a new strategy for Jimmy Choo’s? When H&M approached us to work on this collaboration we were extremely enthusiastic and excited to work on this project. So many great designers have collaborated in the past and we were impressed by their ideas and aesthetic. I have big visions and dreams for Jimmy Choo. We have successfully developed from being a shoe brand to a global luxury accessory brand. There may be further collaborations in the future and new product lines within the collections. What will this temporary partnership mean for the products Jimmy Choo’s creates? Will they be drastically different from other products already created or will Jimmy Choo simply be distributing in H&M stores? 32 DESTINATION JEDDAH

The Jimmy Choo for H&M collection is a capsule and limited edition collection available at H&M stores. We have designed this collection especially for the collaboration for this limited time. Our mainline will not be affected whatsoever by this collaboration and remains completely separate. Will the clothing collections created for H&M follow a general theme with H&M collections or will they be separately themed? We designed the shoes and bags for the collection first and then thought about the clothes to complement them. In fact one could say the clothing in the line are the “accessories” to the shoes and bags. They make a great look and a complete wardrobe together.

Why has the company decided to expand to men’s clothing and accessories? What kind of men’s accessories will Jimmy Choo’s be creating? We have done the men’s range just for this collaboration, to give the opportunity for men to buy in to the “Jimmy Choo” look for the first time. We have designed great shoes/boots and great men’s bags – really practical and can be worn from day to night and with all the outfits created for the men’s range to complement the Jimmy Choo for H&M woman. Is this shift in business strategy a permanent shift or will the men’s collections be a limited edition collection? Creating a capsule men’s collection was a great way for us to explore new categories but at this time we have no plans to extend this to our main Jimmy Choo collection. It was a great, fun project to work on.

Foxfibre Colorganic:

Green business for a greener world By Michael Bou-Nacklie

A new kind of clothing franchise has arrived in Jeddah’s very own Ana Special Mall. The Spanish brand, created by Sally Fox, uses ancient techniques invented long ago to create “something both ancient and new,” Fox said on one of her distributor Web Sites. 36 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Faris Al-Saady and Mohammed Bin Laden were able to get the family-run business to the Kingdom with the hope of increasing environmental awareness in Jeddah by offering people the option of having ecofriendly fashion. Fortunately Al-Saady said Foxfibre was able to weather the recent economic storm thanks to its strong customer base and its brand’s reasonable pricing. Due to a lack of stores like Foxfibre Jeddah customers don’t have to wait for their next trip out of the Kingdom to be able to find comfortable environmentally friendly clothing.

Everything from toddler’s socks, to full-size robes are available at Foxfibre, all bolstered by the fact that each purchase goes towards a greener way of doing business.

Everything about Foxfibre is based on sustainability and all around eco-friendliness so its no surprise the brand focuses on using naturally colored cotton to give it its signature cool green and beige colors. From the production all the way down to the agricultural side of the business, Foxfibre uses cotton grown sustainably, organic and free of harmful pesticides and fertilizers.

BlackBerrys have become ubiquitous in Jeddah recently and it has become impossible to be out and about without hearing the annoying yet strangely familiar tone of BlackBerry Messenger (BBM for those in the know) in the air. Conversations are dominated by talk of where to buy the brightly colored covers or whether the Bold is better than the Curve. For those who have not jumped on the bandwagon during the initial fad, you will be pleased to hear that both STC and Mobily, in typical competitive fashion, carry plans compatible with the BlackBerry and its accompanying internet services. The plans that are offered by STC and Mobily differ most notably in that Mobily offers a prepaid plan in addition to the more traditional postpaid plans. Both carriers offer different models of the BlackBerry but Mobily is slightly ahead of the curve (no pun intended) with five models to STC’s four. It is also worth mentioning that based on several experiences, Mobily’s customer service and support has been superior to that of STC.

Khan Al-Khaleeli A Souk to Stroll Through with Ease

Photos by Maria Mahdaly Text by DJ Staff

The Khan Al-Khaleeli bazaar, located at Red Sea Mall in Jeddah is a new addition with an old world charm. Reminiscent of and named after the ancient Al-Khaleeli bazaar built in Cairo in 1392 AD, this Arabian inspired extension offers merchant wares and bargaining at 53 orientally architectured stalls.

Bargain at the Souk

Known as The Khan, this unique souk is full of great gifts and a number of artisans still working in several traditional crafts of sewing, carving, weaving tapestries, and custom jewelry. Also mixed in are a number of merchants selling popular textiles, linens and housewares. During Ramadan the souk was buzzing with festivities, performers and families enjoying the market bazaar atmosphere. Merchants and food vendors cater to the occasion, such as the offer of baleela, kushari and traditional tea. An outing for locals or a new experience for Jeddah's visitors, this souk offers a stroll through the narrow lanes of antiquity and a different shopping experience with an old world charm.

Snorkeling

Enjoying nature as a family By Hans Sjoeholm

Imagine shallow, turquoise waters and a window to an undersea garden as you peer in on tropical fish of every shape and color and gentle coral reefs; all from right at the surface. Sound great so far? Read on to discover how you can have the best snorkeling experience in the Red Sea.

Snorkeling belongs to the family of aquatic diving activities. It is a great way to experience the underwater world by swimming on the surface of the water using the simplest equipment. It is also carbon neutral, making it environmentally friendly and gives the body a low-impact workout. So who can snorkel? How can this skill be learned? Where can I snorkel? What equipment will I need? Why would I want to snorkel? 54 DESTINATION JEDDAH

The entire family can participate at the same time, regardless of age, skill or physical fitness. In fact, snorkeling is one of the easiest, most fun and most popular ways for you and your family to enjoy the Red Sea. To get the most out of your experience, contact a PADI professional for snorkeling lessons to learn how to use the equipment correctly while learning techniques which will make your swim easier.

When and why to snorkel The best time of day to snorkel is early in the morning around eight o’clock when the ocean is calm and the water is clear and easily accessible. If you spend enough time on the reef, then something terrific might show up or you may have an encounter with a huge friendly filter feeding Manta Ray enjoying a breakfast of plankton close to the shore. If you look closely, you will sometimes see pilot fish swimming in front of this creature’s mouth and usually Remoras

diligently cleaning the Manta’s body as well as the inside of its mouth. Now if you’re extra lucky, you could even see the circular dances Mantas often do as they hunt for their tiny meal. Dolphins have been seen swimming in pods of six to eight along the reef and if you are really fortunate they might make a quick stop to indulge in their endless curiosity. You could even potentially run into a large but friendly whale shark as it gracefully dances with the plankton at the surface.

Snorkeler & Scuba Divers DESTINATION JEDDAH 55

Skin-Diving Sometimes referred to as free-diving, skindiving is a more involved form of snorkeling employing additional equipment and training and is best if learned from a PADI professional in a skin-diving course. Skindiving involves diving below the surface on a single breath to experience more of the reef and it should always be done with a partner. It is a great way to stay fit as well as a good method of clearing your mind to reduce stress. Although inspiring, it is still a sport with many risks. Professional skin-divers always practice with specialized equipment, trained back-up divers and support staff on-site.

After all, you are a visitor to this ancient community and many of the inhabitants might be camouflaged or sleeping, so trying to touch them may startle them resulting in possible injuries to both of you.

Cautions in The Red Sea As always, Destination Jeddah wants you to enjoy the bounties of the Red Sea but we want to remind you to be respectful of it. Do not touch or stand on the corals. They are living organisms and many of the larger corals are hundreds of years old and even walking or touching coral can seriously damage them. One other good reason is that many of the reef inhabitants are poisonous.

Remember: Leave nothing but bubbles, take nothing but pictures and kill nothing but time!

56 DESTINATION JEDDAH

If you see garbage floating in the water, that has not become part of the reef, pick it up just to lend a helping hand to our underwater friends. Always swim with a buddy, notify people on land where you are going and when you expect to come back, and keep an eye out for boat traffic. Just like oil and water, Jet skis and snorkelers do not mix.

Around Town New Opening

“Here’s your Chocolat!”

If a simple taste could add spark to any imagination, then that taste would come from a luscious, sweet chocolate. From the variety of flavors to the appealing packaging, it would be wrong to label chocolates as an ordinary food; they are, in essence, a fusion of fine food and art. Many names grace the hall of fame when it comes to the creation of chocolates and perched high on this list is Voila. The company, Voila, is the product of a handful of obsessive chocolatiers with a vision to paint town after town with chocolate. A dedicated group of purists select the finest cocoa beans to produce the most exquisite flavor combinations all under one roof. 58 DESTINATION JEDDAH

With six major chocolate lines – Fusion, Spice, Flower Essence, Savor, Diet and World – this company brings every chocoholic a unique blend of chocolate, with over 150 flavors, from all around the world. Apart from their signature chocolate lines, Voila creates chocolate for seasonal and religious occasions like Eid and Ramadan, weddings and birthdays. The great thing is that customers can customize Voila chocolates; from developing their very own special blend to having their own monogram on the packaging. Voila dining in December The full service restaurant, opening in December, will serve both contemporary and fusion cuisine. Dining variaty includes a selection of delicacies, from set menus to an a la carte selection. Tea time at Voila, from 4-7pm, features fine Tchaba tea and delicious baked goods. Délifrance Jeddah meets France

Bringing the best of French cuisine to Jeddah, Délifrance offers a selection of freshly baked bread, croissants and other pastries to the discriminating palette. Located on Prince Sultan st., Délifrance is two floors filled with the unmistakable scent of fresh bread. As soon as customers walk through the doors, they are greeted by smiling staff and the scents of French baked goods that are lined up on the long counter downstairs. You might almost be tempted to forego the menu and partake instead in the beautifully decorated cakes and croissants.

Known particularly for its sandwiches (hence the ‘Déli’ in Délifrance), this café’s versatile menu is as appropriate for your office lunch break as it is for your weekend family dinner. The meal begins with a selection of bread with olive paste, cream cheese, and garlic butter; a delicious measure of what to expect for your meal. Notable standouts on its appealing menu include the smoked salmon sandwich, served with capers and french fries. Délifrance also offers several different kinds of quiche, which all sound equally appealing and are a welcome addition to Jeddah’s restaurant scene. While the highlights of the Délifrance menu are definitely its sandwiches, 60 DESTINATION JEDDAH

they also offer main courses like Chicken Cordon Bleu and Steak l’Entrecote. While satisfactory, everything at Délifrance pales in comparison to their perfectly prepared sandwich. The Crème Brulee, garnished with sliced fruit, is also a staple of the menu and is sure to be enjoyed by anyone with a sweet-tooth. All in all, Délifrance is an experience that not only Francophiles can enjoy, but those who enjoy a delicious and beautifully presented meal. Deera Café

Gahwa finds a new home

The location of Deera Café may be inside a classy mall, but its heart remains in the desert where Bedouins perfected brewing their rich Arabic coffee. Its rich and tantalizing taste and texture is seen in the café’s logo with the cardamom green and the brown of the coffee bean, summing up the concept of balancing customary drinks with Western ones. The modern setting, dotted with traditional items found in a desert tent like the dallah (Arabic coffee pot) and a mortar and pestle, give the café’s décor an Arabian touch. A partition with an enlarged photo depicting a majlis (Arabian style seating), divides the single and family sections. Using the different preparation methods from around the Kingdom, the café’s management has paid close attention to each blend offering them all under one roof. Deera Café’s very own innovation in Arabic coffee is the Arabiano: a blend of milk and Arabic coffee similar to a latté, but not as strong. For the less adventurous, regular coffees (both hot and cold) are available. Traditional desserts are also available and are originally presented; Hennini, made with 62 DESTINATION JEDDAH

dates and ghee, served alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream is both complementing and adds to the great taste of this Hijazi treat. For anyone looking to savor traditional Saudi drinks and desserts, a visit to Deera Café is well worth it for its soothing atmosphere as well as the multitude of coffees bursting with flavor. Charcoal Burger A fresh twist on the classic burger

From the get go, it is obvious that Charcoal Burger wants to be different from most of the franchise burger restaurants. With a large black and orange color scheme and branded packaging for all the food it serves, everything has been thought out extensively.

From rows of orange and black seats to the large Charcoal billboard covering the length of an entire wall, the place looks like a professional burger joint. With a friendly staff and a plentiful variety of burgers, the place is a bite out of the Americana burger culture.

Staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the menu but the only disappointment is the burger patty; which is not a patty at all. But rather minced meat shaped into one and grilled over a charcoal grill. In addition to the burgers themselves, several sauces and sides are available like chilli con queso and the usual ketchups and mustards to decorate the variety of burgers. Location: Rawdah st. between Malek (King) road. & Sultan st. www.charcoalsite.com

Sada Al-Tahliyah: Obhur Soufflé If you could ask Antoine Careme (a 19th century chef known as the King of Chefs) where to get an excellent soufflé, I’m sure he’d be astonished if we told him we found a great place in Jeddah close to the beach. It’s true, one of Jeddah’s better kept secrets is that you can get a great soufflé on the way to the beach. As you push open the restaurant doors, the rich smells of chocolate is impossible to ignore. That’s because the soufflés (available in small SR8, medium SR15 and large SR50) are cooked in a small aluminum oven right at the counter. Careme might not approve of the oven but given the results he would be proud to recommend it. From the second you dip your spoon in, you immediately want to taste the visibly creamy chocolate flavor that melts in your mouth. Complemented by hot chocolate, crépes and other chocolate goodies, the place is a veritable fortress of cocoa flavor. Fratelli Lounge: Global cuisine at a global standard

The recent opening of Fratelli Lounge, located on Prince Sultan st., has given Jeddah it’s newest restaurant to see and be seen at. Exclusively for families, Fratelli is a modern breath of fresh air amidst a lounge scene in Jeddah that has been quickly growing stale. Fratelli’s modern decoration and kitschy touches, such as the chandeliers constructed out of cutlery, will definitely appeal to those who like to eat with their eyes as well as their stomachs. Decorated in classic and clean black and white with startling splashes of lime green, Fratelli’s décor almost outshines its menu. Almost, but not quite. Boasting a diverse array of international cuisine, including Lebanese, Italian, and French, Fratelli is definitely ahead of the game when it comes to quality, serving food that looks carefully prepared rather than simply defrosted. The lasagna was rich and beautifully presented and the pesto pasta, while lacking pesto, was also quite good. Fratelli is one of those places that truly aims to satisfy everyone, no matter what their taste. Concerned about calories? You’ll be hard-pressed 64 DESTINATION JEDDAH

to choose from their extensive choices of salads. Craving sugar? Fratelli has a lovely selection of crepes and other sweets for the discerning sweet tooth. Simply indecisive? Their Lebanese inspired appetizers include such favorites as hummus and stuffed grape leaves to hold you at bay while you look through the menu for your main course. ?

Welcome to Benihana: Now that’s special. At least, that’s what the Benihana Web Site tells me when I log into it. However that raises a few questions after one of my many recent visits to Benihana in Jeddah - what is special? Webster’s Dictionary says “better, greater, or otherwise different from what is usual.” Benihana is perhaps different from what is usual but for all the wrong reasons.

Sultan Burger Many Jeddawis flock to Obhur during the summer months to enjoy Jeddah’s beautiful coastline. What has been lacking, however, is a place to grab a bite before settling on the beach. Sultan Burger offers no frills fare of burgers and fries and is a good place to stop off on the way.

The menu offers casual food such as burgers, both meat and chicken, prepared in a variety of different ways. Side dishes include the expected french fries and onion rings. Where Sultan Burger really shines is through its dessert selection. Offering soufflé and a delicious brownie served fresh on a hot plate. All in all, Sultan Burger is a tasty and convenient takeout place on the drive to the beaches of Obhur or just have it delivered to your home. It provides quick service and casual food which suits a relaxing day at the beach.

A lot is missing from the branch here in Jeddah. Its advertising on the street-side boasts of being a place where you can eat sushi all the time. But after so many years of waiting for Benihana to improve, it has become a disappointment. Benihana in Jeddah leaves much to be desired. On a recent visit, I was not satisfied with my steak dish. I decided to bring this to the attention of the management. Unfortunately my hopeful expectations to speak with management were dashed with a seemingly inattention to my concern. Benihana underwent a renovation to improve its ambiance. This renovation improved the facilities quite a bit. However, the service has steadily dwindled from average to well below, with waiters consistently getting orders wrong to an order for drinks taking twenty minutes. The food itself lacks the same spark that Benihana sushi has globally. This Mystry Diner had a disappionting experience. Overall, Benihana loses points across the board for consistently failing on everything that should be part of a good restaurant serving more than just a burger.

Jamaican Grill: Tastes of the Island With few of us ever having tasted Jamaican food and even fewer of us having had the chance to visit the island, having Jamaican Grill open is like having a little bit of Jamaica in Jeddah. From top to bottom, the restaurant is decorated in a jungle/beach motif we all believe Jamaica to be, and it gives the place an authentic feel. Throughout the restaurant, green, yellow and black dominate the decor and the walls even have a guide to Jamaican for beginners. The menu is made up of chicken, beef, shrimp and goat dishes all differently delicious, and each served with a salad or rice side dish. However the meat was rather dry in several meals, and the cup of salsa provided a balance to the meal. Some meals varied on taste though, with the Jerk Chicken Steak being full of taste 66 DESTINATION JEDDAH

complemented by a juicy texture. All in all Jamaican Grill is a unique experience, and with a little imagination and its expansive dÊcor and attention to detail even the looped bird chirping soundtrack added to the ambiance. LOCAL RECIPE

Al-Baik?

Yes, please

How Jeddawis survived before Al-Baik is a mystery. Day in and day out, thousands of customers battle for elbow space on the delivery counter. From the hungry customers to the eye-opening body odor of someone close by, nothing has daunted the success of this enterprise.

Shining as one of the few examples of a western concept modified for the local market, Al-Baik has been a success since the early 80’s and is famous for its chicken and shrimp meals. From its creamy garlic sauce to its rich and flavor packed chicken meals, Al-Baik leaves customers wanting more. The franchise has grown to become as much a part of the city as the famous fountain to the beaches. You’ll be hard pressed to find anyone who would say no to Al-Baik. If you do, then you probably shouldn’t associate with that person anymore.

Al-Baik’s success stems from how it provides quality food for a low price and given the demographics of Jeddah, catering to the walk in population is where other big name fast-food restaurants have failed. Very few things need to be said about Al-Baik because its strength is the food itself – a delicious smell that draws customers in and causes queues that fill up its spacious interiors. Kaa’ba 101:

Facts About Islam’s Holiest Site By DJ Staff

The Kaa’ba is one of the most recognizable symbols of Islamic faith, as one of the most sacred sites in Islam, Muslims throughout the world face the Kaa’ba for the five daily prayers. With millions visiting Makkah every year for Umrah and Hajj, very few are aware of its rich wondrous secrets housed within its walls.

Hazroan “shathroan”: Abdullah Ibn Al-Zubair built the hazroan, also known as the ‘shathroan’ during his rule over Makkah. It was built in order to protect the Kaa’ba against flooding during the rainy season and also to keep the cloth coverings of the Kaa’ba, or the ‘kisweh,’ safe. The structure is 45 cm wide and 13 cm tall. Fifty-five rings of copper were used to attach the coverings of the Kaa’ba to the hazroan as a means of further protection. The Black Stone: The Black Stone is an ancient sacred stone, which is the southeastern cornerstone of the Kaa’ba. The Stone is 30cm in diameter and is about 1.5m off the ground. The Black Stone was originally in one piece but was broken during various raids like the Qarmatian raid in 930 AD. The pieces were later collected and are held together by a silver frame made by Abdullah Ibn Al-Zubair. Virtues of the Black Stone: 1. It is a Ruby of Paradise, according to Hadith. 2. It was carried by Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) during the rebuilding of Kaa’ba, by the Al-Quraish tribe, and was put back in its rightful place by him. 3. It was kissed by the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) and other prophets before him. 4. It indicates the beginning of tawaf, circumambulation of the Kaa’ba. 5. Prayers, or duaa, said beside the rock are alleged to come true. 6. On the day of Resurrection, it will testify in favor of those who touched it. Al-Multazam: Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “Al-Multazam is what is between the Black Stone and the door of the Kaa’ba.” Mojahid said, “What is between the corner and the door is so called Al-Multazam; and he who performs a prayer and then supplicates (prays) Allah for (something) (in this place) will receive good for him if Allah wills.”

The Black Stone encased in its silver setting.

The Entrance of Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) to Kaa’ba The same year that the Prophet (pbuh) conquered Makkah, he glorified the Lord by saying, “Allahu Akbar” in all of the corners of the Kaa’ba and then prayed inside. It is known the doors of the Kaa’ba are always closed at night as this is what the Prophet instructed the Key-keepers, the Al-Shaiba tribe, to do. The Key-keepers, following this instruction loyally, even denied Aisha, the wife of the Prophet (pbuh), may Allah be pleased with her, access into the Kaa’ba at night. DESTINATION JEDDAH 73

Yemeni Corner: This is the south corner of the Kaa’ba, pointing towards Yemen laying parallel to the Black Stone. Ibn Omar, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) said touching both the Black Stone and the Yemeni corner is atonement for ones sins. Mojahid said: “Put one hand on the Yemeni corner while saying your prayers and let no prayer go denied.” The Prophet (pbuh) used to say, “Oh Lord, give us good in this world, good in the hereafter and save us the torment of hell,” when passing between the Black Stone and the Yemeni Corner. 74 DESTINATION JEDDAH

The Interior of the Kaa’ba: The inside of a Kaa’ba is infused with a mix of musk and authentic sandalwood perfumes, reapplied throughout the year. The floors of the Kaa’ba are made of white marble framed by four-meter high rosewood marble running parallel to the walls. At the inner entrance located in the back of Kaa’ba, there is a niche where the Prophet (pbuh) performed his prayers. The area is indicated by different colored marble. On the right side of the interior is a staircase leading to the roof accessed through a door known as the Door of Repentance, which is always locked and covered with a curtain. The interior walls of the Kaa’ba are covered with green silk curtains, with inscriptions reading, “There is no god but Allah and Mohammed is the messenger of Allah.” Five meters from the rosewood marble to the roof are green curtains decorated with Quranic verses. Previously six wooden columns used to hold up the Kaa’ba but now there are only three, each 44cm in diameter, 9m high and 235 cm apart. Lamps made of copper and silver, dating back to the Ottoman Empire, hang from the roof. The stairs that lead to the roof of the Kaa’ba are made of crystal and aluminum. A box inside placed in a 1.5m deep hole, known as the Kaa’ba Well, containes gifts and objects placed there by kings, presidents and other dignitaries. Separate pieces of marble representing each sultan, king, and prince who expanded the Holy Mosque during their rule are also within the Kaa’ba. Every year, the interior of the Kaa’ba is washed and cleaned with water and soap and later, fine perfumes and incense are burned inside the Kaa’ba. An architectual cross-section of the Kaa’ba

The doors of the Kaa’ba Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh) created the first entrances into the Kaa’ba, placed on the western and eastern sides respectively. Rather than formal doors, these entrances were actually openings in the wall of the structure. Pilgrims generally entered through the eastern side and exited through the western side. The first Sultan to install a Kaa’ba door requiring a key was the third Yemeni king, Toba’a. After the Al-Quraish tribe conquered Makkah they closed the western door and raised the eastern side so that no one could pass through. The current door is made of teak and covered with 280 kg of gold. Decorated with verses from the Quran, the door is 310cm high, 190cm wide and is elevated 225cm above the ground. The key to the Kaa’ba is 40 cm long and is kept in a bag made of green silk. The key has been in possession of the Al-Shaiba family who have been the gatekeepers of the Kaa’ba since the early days of Islam. The Kaa’ba has two roofs; an upper roof and a lower roof. The upper roof is furnished with white marbles and decorated with a wooden frame used to let sunlight into the Kaa’ba. The frame is 127cm long, 104cm wide and covered with glass and always opened when the Kaa’ba is cleaned. Kiswit Al Kaa’ba (Al Kaa’ba Cover) During the early days of Islam, Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) covered the Kaa’ba with fabrics and Yemeni textiles. During Umar Ibn Al-Khattab era, it was covered with Egyptian linen. Hesham Ibn Orwa has said that the first follower who substituted leather coverings for fabrics was Ibn Al-Zubair, with Yazeed Ibn Mowaya and Abdulmalik Ibn Marwan following suit. The first to change the Kaa’ba’s coverings twice in one year was Mowaya Ibn Abi Safyan. The covers were changed once on the 10th of Muharram and once at the end of Ramadan. Ibn Al-Zubair was also well known for his generosity in using fine perfumes inside the Kaa’ba. It was common for a sultan, king, or prince to donate the cover of the Kaa’ba.

At some point, The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques expressed concern to AlKhalifa Al-Mahdi that the foundations of the Kaa’ba may be weakened by the number of the coverings on the Kaa’ba. Consequently, Al-Khalifa Al-Mahdi instructed the Custodian to remove all of the coverings, except one. The Custodian removed all of the covers, used perfumes on the walls and then covered the Kaa’ba with fine luxurious fabric. Another story recounts how the Sultan Al-Daher, when performing the Hajj, opened the Kaa’ba and cleaned it with rosewater.

Now the Saudi government oversees a factory in Makkah, which is the sole manufacturer of the Kaa’ba covers. They manufacture three types of covers: internal covers, external covers, and a special cover for the door of the Kaa’ba called Al-Borquoo’o. Over 600m of fine black silk weighing 670kg are specially made and covered with Quranic verses using gold coated silver fibers. Kaa’ba Treasures When the Prophet (pbuh) conquered Makkah, he found more than 70 thousand ounces of pure gold inside the Kaa’ba. His successors did not take any of the gold but during the Abbasside period, Sultans borrowed from this treasure. Umar Ibn Al-Khattab discouraged followers from donating gold to the Kaa’ba, preferring that it to be donated to the less fortunate instead. When Umar came close to donating all of the gold to the poor, the Kaa’ba Key-keepers, the Al-Shaiba family, reminded Umar that the Prophet (pbuh) and Abu Bakr did not share this practice. Kaa’ba Key Keeper The first key keeper was Prophet Ishmael (pbuh), then his son, Nabet. Then on to the Jorhom tribe and then later to the Khoza’a tribe. The great-great-great grand father of Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) fought the tribe for possession of the key. The Al-Shaiba branch of Quraish acquired the key and has kept it until today. Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) directed the Al-Shaiba tribe to keep the key and not give it up to anyone.

Swine Flu In The Kingdom:

Be Prepared

Hospitals in the Kingdom have treated over 2000 plus cases of swine flu, with a 95 percent recovery rate. The best sources for further information regarding Swine flu are the H1N1 page on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Web Site and the Saudi Ministry of Health Web Site, both of which offer up to date informations regarding the virus and also how to identify and treat it. - Dr. Maha Alatta, Consultant Family Physician of the Medical College at King Abdul-Aziz University, Jeddah.

Center for Disease Control and Prevention: www.cdc.gov/H1N1FLU/ Saudi Ministry of Health www.moh.gov.sa

Swine Flu Symptoms: • Fever • Lethargy • Lack of appetite • Coughing • Runny nose • Sore throat • Nausea • Vomiting • Diarrhea Tips on Avoiding Swine Flu: • Wash your hands frequently, with an antibacterial alcohol-based soap. • Avoid touching public surfaces. • Be sure to cover your mouth with the inside of your elbow rather than your hand when coughing or sneezing to avoid transmitting germs to someone. • Throw away all tissues after use. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. • Use medical masks in crowded areas to avoid contracting H1N1. Below is a list of hospitals in Jeddah that are accepting and treating suspected cases of the H1N1 virus widely known as Swine flu. Going Green: Recycling in Jeddah

Recycling in Jeddah gets a boost through the recent partnership campaign between Tetra Pak, Trewind, and Mawakib Al-Ajr, a local charity organization. This campaign aims to increase awareness of the benefits of recycling in the Jeddah community. The campaign focuses on the need to eliminate waste and how this global problem can be solved at a local level. Brochures distributed to the public outline the problem and explain the process of recycling. Tetra Pak in particular, plays a major role in encouraging Jeddawis to ‘go green’ by explaining how all of their packaging is recyclable and reusable. The process of simply taking packages to a collection point would reduce waste and benefit not only the area but also the people of Jeddah. Tetra Pak and Trewind have joined forces with Mawakib Al-Ajr, whereby the local charity will act as a collection point for public’s recycling efforts to aid needy orphans. Mawakib Al-Ajr will sell the packages back to Tetra Pak and then use the profits to benefit local orphans. This campaign champions collaboration and fosters a public awareness not only of the impending problems of waste but introduces the benefits of recycling, and how we can play our part for a greener Jeddah.

Al-Falah School: A Scientific

Renaissance Icon In The Middle East A trader used to visit Jeddah from Makkah carrying his goods along with a piece of paper listing the merchants and the goods he needed to buy from each. Heading towards Al-Khaskia district he roamed the streets searching for someone to read the paper in his hand. After several hours of searching, with fatigue setting in, he sought God's help. Let's imagine education in the past century in the late Ottoman period in the form of live drama. In Jeddah there was only one school, named AlRoshdeya School. The school was used to teach Turkish in addition to a few katatib (rooms for lecture) scattered here and there. Mohammed Ali Zainal Ali Reza (born in Jeddah in 1889), the son of one of the first trading pioneer families who placed great value in education, sent young Mohammed Ali for primary education at Al-Azhar in Cairo. He returned home with ideas, which he presented to his family, one of the most

influential families in that part of Jeddah at the time. His father, Sheikh Zainal Ali Reza, was the leader of the shipping agents in Jeddah, and his uncle, Haj Abdullah Ali Reza, was the district head of the administrative governor of Jeddah. The beginning of this partnership of knowledge was modest and shrouded in secrecy. It began with a sailing boat from Al-Sham, leased from Al-Zakir, and brought with it the one scholar, who had agreed with the emerging principles of teaching Arabic, reading and writing. Young Mohammed Ali was tired of the secrecy and with a group of his friends, decided to secure a permit for opening a private academic institution teaching solely in Arabic and unrestricted by the ruling Ottoman administration. They were granted permission from Istanbul. Al-Falah was the seed and the start of legal education in the Hijazi region and in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and remains as a symbol of national independence and educational awakening.
