Blueberries Blueberries are an increasingly popular fruit in New Zealand as they deal well with a variety of temperatures. Winter is a great time to plant this bushy shrub in the garden or pot. As Blackberries are a tall plant, it is best to plant them in a sheltered area against a wall or staked in a simple tee pee. They prefer a well drained position in full sun. Consider your soil when planting - the better the soil, the better the berries. If you are starting with an existing bed, dig in organic matter and add a layer of a high quality planting mix. The best times of day to plant are early morning or late afternoon to avoid too much sun exposure early on.

Mulching Winter is a great time to start prepping your soil in the garden for the upcoming warmer months and is the best kept secret against weeds, diseases and dry or wet soil conditions. It will save you time and effort and give your soil and plants new life. The difference this seemingly low-value practice will generate will be obvious in the garden and the results. There are a variety of differnet types of mulches however

• Blueberries are ideal for freezing, as they keep their shape and flavour. They can also be cooked from fresh or frozen.

their success may depend on several variables. Pea straw is recommended as it breaks down easily however birds enjoy scratching around and spreading it everywhere. Lawn clippings work well, are easily spread and best used in small quantities often rather than a thick layer. Avoid using if your lawn has flowering weeds as mulching will only increase these. Newspaper is best used as a base layer with heavier mulch on top. Pre-soaking to increase

weight and overlap to reduce weeds coming up between. Sawdust can temporarily deplete the nitrogen in your soil so add nitrogen-rich fertiliser to off-set this. Only use sawdust from untreated timber. Bark, depending on size can take several years to break down so be conscious of the size of the chips. Compost is acceptable to all plants, including weeds so you may need to cover with a layer of weed-suppressing mulches to reduce the weed load.

Two community organisations build together Franklin Hospice has partnered with Counties Manukau Rugby to build a house in the Paerata Rise development to split the profits 50/50 for the community, and the “roof shout” milestone was reached on Friday 14 June, 2019. The celebration saw the final screws holding the roofing iron in place being added. After working through the considerable requirements to put the venture together, construction of the 220 square metres, four-bedroom house at 7 Walter Lawry Road is well underway and due for completion in August or September this year. Hospice will use the proceeds to fund hospice services, and Counties Manukau Rugby will use their share to support junior rugby. Ric Odom, Franklin Hospice CEO, said “working together with Manukau Rugby didn’t seem like an obvious fit at first, but it’s been absolutely fantastic.” “For those with a terminal illness and their families, - our friends and neighbours in Franklin - what this money will do is help us help them a lot more,” said Ric. “This is more than just building a house. This is about community involvement. Community supporting community. And your efforts are making it happen. Thank you.”

Ric said “this is a great example of two community organisations working together to support the greater Franklin community and includes support from many individuals, tradespeople and businesses including Grafton Downs, Mark Price Builders, NZ Home Loans Pukekohe,ITMTuakauandmanyothersuppliers.” Barfoot & Thompson (already huge supporters of Franklin Hospice) will market and auction the property at no cost. Without this support, such a project would not have been possible, and Franklin Hospice and Counties Manukau Rugby intend recognising all who have made this happen in various ways as the project develops. The senior years Is your cat or dog over the age of 10? Then your pet is entering their senior years.

Cats and dogs are living longer, thanks to modern medicine and technology. This means cats are now commonly living well into their late teens and even early 20’s. Small breed dogs can also survive into their late teens while larger breeds live to their early to mid-teens. While your pet may still seem young at heart, medical problems and chronic illnesses may start to appear and affect their health & wellbeing. Older dogs are prone to suffering from arthritis, dental disease, heart disease (particularly small breed dogs) as well as lumps / growths on the body. Older cats often suffer from arthritis, dental disease, chronic kidney disease and hyperthyroidism. Both dogs and cats are at increased risk of developing cancer in their older years. With early detection, many diseases can be managed, slowed down or even cured, and most importantly, we can minimise any pain or discomfort so that your pet can remain young at heart right until his/her last days. We recommend veterinary health checks for senior pets every 6 to 12 months, depending on age. We also recommend regular blood and urine tests which are a great screening tool to pick things up early and to get a normal baseline for your pet which we can refer to if things change over time. A baseline weight also helps us detect early weight loss before it is physically obvious. Please ask one of our team about booking in a senior pet check with one of our caring vets.

TUESDAY 25 JUNE 2019

We made it, now we are trying to unmake it. By Helen Jansen

It is common knowledge that there is a plastic problem on this earth. We, as the human caretakers, have not done a great job of looking after our home and its inhabitants and the imposed suffering is an ever looming catastrophe. Polyethylene, the most common type of plastic used in disposable, single use products, was first created in 1898 but it was not until the mid 1950’s that a high-density polyethylene, or HDPE, was invented. This is the type used in milk, juice and household detergent bottles due its ability to be chemically resistant and stronger. Single-use plastics, or disposable plastics, are used only once before they are thrown away and as they are not biodegradable, after many years they will degrade into tiny particles. This process can take up to 1,000 years for plastic bags, while plastic bottles can take 450 years or more. We are producing over 300 million tons of plastic every year, 50 per cent of which is for single-use purposes. These are only used for a few moments but remain on the planet for at least several hundred years. Every year, more than eight million tons of plastic ends up in our oceans. The statistics are appalling and we have been slow to

respond however with the introduction and production of sustainable alternatives we can change our behaviours. A2P - Alternative 2 Plastics – is a recent start-up, family owned business based in Waiuku. Their mission is to save the planet one product at a time with products and packaging that contain no single use plastic. Everything in their range is recyclable, reusable, natural and sustainable. “These products offer a choice as they don’t damage the environment and are easy to use, they are from the earth and are going back to the earth,” says Sheryn Botherway, Business Development Manager. The product range is currently based around “the ultimate lunch pack” with paper sandwich bags, beeswax wraps and a reuseable bamboo straw. “Grabbing clingwrap is just so easy. Our grandmothers didn’t have clingwrap and they managed.” Sheryn is quick to point out that their beeswax wraps are not new technology, just revamped and offered in a manner that makes them easy and sustainable. There is even a cool little accessory which makes them easy to hang over the tap for quick drying. The sandwich wraps are helpful little pockets which are re-useable “however if they don’t come home, it’s not a biggie as they will compost within three months.” The company has only been around since October 2018, with the products being stocked in 20 New World stores since May 2019. “The supermarkets are really trying to move towards more sustainable products. It’s about a culture change but we are getting there and starting to get re-orders.” In order to offer the best prices, the products are currently sourced and printed in China with the finished product arriving ready for distribution. “Long term we are planning on bringing the whole process home but at the moment we are conscious of price and availability.” There are more product lines in development however until sourcing and process are finalised, they remain ‘top secret.’ All the products are FDA approved and pass all US and NZ food standards requirements. “I love the ocean and want my kids to have somewhere to live and swim. I don’t think this is too much to ask.”

Posts, Planet & People As a born and bred New Zealander there always seems to be a smattering of ‘good ole Kiwi ingenuity’ that comes along in the mix, especially if you are a “kiwi Bloke” working on the land. This is certainly true about Jerome Wenzlick the founder and General Manager of Future Post, the ‘sustainable fence post people in Waiuku’. Jerome, a dairy and drystock farmer for over 20 years and commercial fencer for more than 15 was fencing around a dump, where he was constantly restricted by the amount of plastic in the ground. His entrepreneurial gene was sparked. “I just knew there must be something that could be done to use all this plastic”, says Jerome. “When you’re stuck on a fence line month after month you think about alternative ways of making a living…I just thought yeah, this’ll work”. A casual conversation over a catch of scallops with Bindi Ground, a friend and colleague, led to a journey of discovery about repurposing milk bottles and soft plastics. Skip forward a mere two years and Future Post is born. Although Jerome lives in Kopu, he has found that the facilities and accessibility that Waiuku offers suits the company’s needs. “We have been here for nearly a year now,

7

PROPERTYPOST PLUS

and the landlord is amazing”. Future Post now employs six staff all of whom live locally and provide the same mix of kiwi ingenuity and number 8 wire mentality. “A couple of the guys approached us saying they had heard about what we were doing and wanted to be involved. I spose you could call them green hearted”. Having visited the facility I was intrigued by how simplistic the system appears to be – chipping the raw product, dropping it into a hopper which then empties into an extrusion machine forcing the molten mix into moulds. The extrusion machine was imported from China but has undergone several modifications to make it suitable for their needs. “We modified the heck outta it to get it to do its job right”. Using recycled plastic can certainly make the process interesting with blockages always a possibility which then slow the production process. “This is what happens when you use recycled stuff – it’s not easy”. Although there are similar ideas happening in Europe, “they don’t do it like we do it”. Jerome explains that to get this point has not been an easy process and there were many times that they were tempted to just give up. “At least with milking cows you put the milk in

By Helen Jansen

a vat and you get paid the next month”. After several people suggested Jerome take Future Post to Fieldays, he just kinda went with it and successfully won the Innovation Award. Although not having any desire to be in the limelight, Jerome now finds himself inundated with media and orders. “I certainly didn’t expect this much attention”. Receiving enquiries from Australia, Pacific Islands and as far away as Wales Jerome wonders where it will grow to. “How in the heck did they hear about us all the way over there?”. The $5k winnings will be paying the beer bill for the week... and a little bit more. The possibilities of what this process offers are huge but Jerome is noncommittal about the future direction. “It’s just really cool to see waste from the farm, like milk bottles and soft plastics, being re-purposed into a fence post that gets back to the farm. It’s great to be part

of the circular economy and in such a hands on way”. Jerome explains that the plastic problem is huge. “When I went diving a while ago, one of the scallops had plastic inside the meat itself and that’s in the Coromandel! It shows you that it’s everywhere, it’s just everywhere”. A recent partnership with Sea Cleaners is a small way towards helping by removing plastic from the sea around the New Zealand coastline. Committed is a good word to describe Jerome, he has proven that he is in this for the long haul. “Too many people are wanting to make a quick buck and not do anything for it. There are lots of ideas but it’s difficult to take that idea and commercialise it. In a few years, this could be something really big. It’s all happened so quick, it’s quite overwhelming”. Watch this space or should that be post hole…
