US death wake-up call Waiuku Volunteer Fire Station’s Poker Run for vaping teens By Kylie Hall

With more than 215 cases of serious lung disease and one death (so far) reported in the U.S. likely to be connected to vaping, local parents of teens should be concerned, because vaping is on the rise in schools.

ll A secondary school principal from our region who was interviewed for this story states, “We have definitely noticed an increase in vaping amongst students over the last 12 to 24 months. National data and our own data shows that cigarette smoking has declined considerably amongst high school students over the last 10 to 15 years, so it is sad and concerning that vaping seems to be replacing it and is on the increase.” If you’re new to vaping lingo, let me fill you in. E-cigarettes are a tool to help smokers quit. They produce a heated vapour that users inhale, which is why using an e-cigarette is called vaping. The vapour liquid may, or may not, include nicotine depending on what users purchase. In New Zealand, it’s illegal for companies to sell vaping products to anyone under the age of 18. So parents, if you know of anyone accessing vaping gear who is under 18, do us all a favour and dob the company in. There is currently no legal age restriction in NZ for vaping, but schools have rules regarding no vaping at school. Parents are always being nagged by their kids for ‘stuff’. Label clothing, money, latest iPhone, more money, and whatever is trendy is often on the nagging list. And nags about vaping gear are now cropping up. A local mother interviewed for this story said that vaping is causing huge arguments between her and her 15 year-old teen. “I know one of their friends vapes. The friend’s Mum knows about it, which I think is pretty disgusting. My teen has tried vaping, arguing that it’s not bad, it tastes nice and everyone does it. I’ve even heard that some kids have been vaping in class! There’s definitely peer pressure and it’s causing big arguments in our household because I say no way.” She loves her kid and is rightly worried about the as yet unknown long term health impacts connected with vaping, adding, “It just can’t be good for your lungs.” The Ministry of Health confirms that vaping is not risk-free and should ONLY be used by smokers who are trying to quit, being the lesser of two evils. Pregnant women should never vape as the liquid heated to produce the vapour contains chemicals that may harm their baby. No one else should be doing it. Which raises the question, why is it freely available? And with flavours such as strawberry, watermelon and pink lemonade, just

who are the vaping companies trying to attract? Listen to the radio and like me, you’ll notice that advertising for vaping products has increased. Are vaping companies making hay while the sun shines, before tighter regulations come into force? The cynic in me says yes. Emma Logan, who is a pharmacist with Unichem Waiuku Pharmacy says that overall she supports the use of vaping for smokers wishing to quit. “But I feel the products should be sold by health professionals that can provide quit smoking programmes, to help people eventually wean off completely and remain smoke-free.” She also advises that nicotine replacement therapy, such as patches and gum, are safer than vaping for smokers wishing to quit. “We can provide funded nicotine patches and gum. You don’t need a prescription from the doctor.” Like many health professionals, Emma is worried about the unknown health impacts of vaping. “I have concerns over the lack of long term toxicology data (there are no studies on using vaping for more than 2 years).” She also says that some cheaper vaping devices can melt off metal toxins at high temperatures, so if smokers looking to quit wish to buy an e-cigarette, she advises they buy one from an informed seller, like a pharmacy. The pharmacy can also provide advice and support on quitting and let’s face it, a vaping store, doesn’t have a vested interest in you quitting. Ask cigarette smokers and ex-smokers if they would have picked up that first smoke if they knew it would threaten their life, reducing the years they have with their family, and most would say, absolutely no way. Back when they started, the links to numerous cancers and lung disease weren’t known. But with vaping, the warnings are already here. There are unknown risks with longterm vaping and if you aren’t a smoker trying to quit, do not start vaping. Many say our current teen generation have their heads screwed on pretty well. Based on smoking stats, it looks like they’re making good decisions regarding saying no to cigarette smoking. We should have faith that they’ll use their brains again now that they’re better informed, and ditch vaping too. For their sake, hopefully they’ll prove us right.

The weather was perfect for the Waiuku Volunteer Fire Station’s Poker Run on Saturday 21 September. There was a great turnout with the Fire Station full to capacity; standing room only with many spilling out onto the street before taking to the road. Continued page 2. By Joyce Brewer

Awhitu Landcare free speaker event

Districts Post spoke with Sarah Williams, Awhitu Landcare Resource Center Manager about the upcoming Free Speaker Event on Thursday 26 September. “We are finding that there is a ground-swell of interest from Awhitu landowners about how to re-establish original species bush and for wetland and waterway restoration. Landowners are aware of the importance and want to do the work but many are unsure of how to go about it and generally don’t know about the support and funding opportunities available.” Sarah is adamant that this event is not just about the peninsula and would like to encourage anyone interested to attend to find out more. Several funders and supporters will be present on the evening to advise about their

services and to answer questions, inclusive of Ministry of Primary Industries on the One Billion Trees funding, the Sustainable Business Network to speak about the Million Meters Stream Project, the Trees for Survival planting and education programme and Auckland Council Biodiversity. As Awhitu Landcare are aware of the disconnect between the funders, supporters and the landowners, they are hosting this event to connect people and hopefully enable a more streamlined process for the work to happen. “Awhitu Peninsula is an amazing place and we would love to see many more restoration projects supported across the landscape,” said Sarah. Plenty of car and bike enthusiasts were keen to make the run from Waiuku to Whitford, Clevedon and surrounding area’s to participate in the fundraiser and enjoy the journey. This year there were a record number of teams making the effort to dress up in some pretty fanciful and elaborate costumes, making the judge’s decision difficult. According to most I spoke to, this year had more teams getting into the spirit of the fancy dress option, glamming it up (or down) and owning it! The range of customs was astounding! There were nuns and priests, guys in full camo (I think they were guys), 60’s sales reps, killer garden gnomes and the cast from Ghostbuster’s… However, as there could only be one winner, the Alice in Wonderland team, who looked like they had just stepped from a movie set, took out best costume. The ‘Gangsta Girlz’ in their pimped out rotary, took out the ‘hard luck’ prize after breaking down on the first leg of the run. By the end of the day they were all still in high spirits and took the ‘win’ in their stride.

Mark McDonagh, the man in charge on the day, confirmed the Poker Run has been running for eight years and is the fundraiser for non-government sponsored equipment that the fire station requires. “Over the past eight years our town has really gotten behind us and it has become more of a fun community event now,” he says. The fire station has a huge range of sponsors supporting our volunteers by generously donating goods and services to the cause. DW Homes, Pukekohe Toyota, Laser Electrical Papakura and Keece Electrical, to name but a few. The object of the run is to drive or ride around a circuit which is roughly around 180km long. There are five stops along the way where at each stop, you pick up an unopened card. When you arrive back at the Fire Station, the cards are opened by the team of volunteers and taken to the scrutineer who then judges the highest winning hand. As well as an auction, there are an abundance of prizes on the day. All participants get a fabulous dinner and are treated to a live band so it’s no surprise that this is such a popular event in Waiuku.

Karioitahi toilets mural Manukau harbour tragedy One person has died after a vessel overturned on the Manukau bar on Saturday 21 September. The incident was reported to Police about 12.20pm when three people were pulled from the water by a member of the public in a passing boat. Sadly, one person died at the scene. Two sustained moderate injuries and were transported to hospital by road. Police are making enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

BEFORE

By Sergeant Graeme Wood

The warmer weather arriving provides the ideal environment for the burglars and thieves among us to get out and steal your possessions. Don’t just think that burglaries happen at night. Just as many, if not more, are committed during the day when most of us are away working. Use the change of seasons to check your house and property. Check all your door and windows can be locked securely. If you have an alarm, check that it is working. Don’t leave items outside in your garden that may be used as items to enter your house, and get to know your neighbours so you can look out for each other. If you are aware of something unusual or someone acting suspiciously, don’t ignore it, ring 111. At 6.00am, couple of weeks ago, we set up alcohol checkpoints on various roads around town. Although this is surprising to many people, each morning we caught drivers who were over the limit. Yes, even at 6.30am, there are drunk drivers. You need to be aware that if you get on the booze at night and have some sleep, you may still be over the limit the next morning. Some caught out drivers were surprised that they were well over the limit, which makes you wonder how much they had the night before. You are not only a risk on the roads but you are also a risk to your employer. So, if we inconvenience you for a few minutes, thanks for your help, however we make no apologies for keeping the road safe. Go the All Blacks. Cheers, Woody

Port Waikato erosion update Following the significant erosion that has occurred recently at Port Waikato, Council is providing weekly updates to the community about the situation and plans going forward. Waikato District Council will be at Port Waikato on Saturday 28 September for a community meeting on erosion. The Chief Operation Officer and Mayor will be in attendance, along with coastal scientists and Waikato Regional Council staff. The meeting starts at 10am at the Sunset Beach Lifeguard Service lounge. All are welcome. Experts will be building on previous discussions about why it is not feasible to protect the Sunset Beach shoreline against erosion. Ways of how we can work together with the community to plan for the future will be discussed, and demolition of the hall and car park work will be outlined. Tenders are in for the demolition of the community hall. The hall is being cleared and prepared for demolition which will happen in the coming weeks. Once the hall is demolished, work will start on the car park to increase capacity and reduce the impact of the narrowing effects the erosion has had on the car park. Extra signage will be put up during the next week in the car park warning people to stay away from the extra barrier that been put up at the car park. Council is monitoring erosion at the beach and it will be taking drone footage on a regular basis to improve monitoring. There will be more warning signs at the access way to the beach warning people to stay away from the dunes.

Spring is in the air

Representing renewal and rejuvenation, spring is the happiest season of the year, and if you’ve been thinking about a clean-up and an update, now is the perfect time to spring into action! Let there be light - Clean your windows and open them up so that fresh air flows into your home. Cleaning your curtains, blinds and shutters will also freshen your house. Bring in the light – position mirrors opposite windows to reflect more light and illuminate the inside of your home. Add table lamps or floor lamps to create soft ambience.

coffee tables, except for a couple of gorgeous books, and adding a vase of fresh cut spring flowers and citrus-scented candles will instantly bring spring style into your home. Greenery is also a must for any interior – it literally breathes life into space. Declutter - Clean, tidy and de-clutter your home. Properties always appear larger and feel more spacious with less clutter – so start by clearing up the shoes piled up at the front door and put the toothbrushes on the sink away and out of sight! Look at your home with fresh eyes and decide what you need to display and what to put away. Spring is also a great chance to sell things online, purge excess items by doing a thorough home walk-through. Organise old, broken, unused, or unloved items into three categories — for donation, for sale or for the tip.

Styling your home - Nothing says spring like adding pops of colour to your rooms – colour instantly livens up any space. You can add accents of colour with a piece of coloured glass or artwork or you can simply update your soft furnishings by introducing a spring colour palette – olive and forest greens, rose pinks, oranges and golden yellows – in your throws and cushions. Try some new or different textures to add more interest! Clearing your

Anxiety in dogs Is your dog scared of fireworks, thunderstorms, or anxious about new situations, people or other dogs? Anxiety is a common and real problem for many dogs and is often unrecognised by owners. There are many changes in body language that can help us recognise stress and fear in dogs. These include yawning, lip licking, raising a paw, showing the white part of the eye, looking in many directions, pacing, panting, staying still, and suddenly not eating treats. Dogs with thunderstorm and fireworks phobia can become extremely panicked and overwhelmed. They may hide, tremble, pace, whine or try to escape. This is a terrifying experience for your dog and should not be ignored. Here are some tips to help you make your dog feel more secure & confident: Sound training - playing fireworks or thunderstorm noises can help desensitise your dog to those noises. Start at a volume at which your dog does not react, then gradually increase

the volume over several days until your dog no longer reacts to the noise. Anxiety vests - much like swaddling to calm infants, an anxiety vest puts gentle pressure on your dog’s torso and helps him/her feel secure. Exercise - Not only is exercise good for your dog’s physical and mental health, but a tired dog is also less likely to react to stressful events. Consult a dog behaviourist - Dogs with anxiety tend to get worse with age, so getting advice from a dog trainer early on can help prevent things escalating. But it’s important to choose a trainer that uses only positive training methods, not ones based on the outdated and debunked dominance (“alpha dog”) theory. Calming aids - Calmex® is a herbal supplement that helps your dog relax. Adaptil® is a synthetic dog pheromone which has a calming and reassuring effect on dogs and is available as a spray, diffuser or slow-release collar. Prescription medications - our vets can prescribe short-acting and long-term antianxiety medications to help improve your dog’s mental and emotional wellbeing. Bike Race Big Boost for Local Community The Rotary organised 2019 Counties Cycle Classic is all set for the Pukekohe Park Raceway on Sunday October 13 and organiser, Graham Russell, is expecting an even bigger turn-out than last year. “Entries are flowing in,” he says “and we can continue to register riders right up to an hour or so before the races start.” The Auckland Council supported event provides a healthy riding challenge through our picturesque Franklin countryside and although providing a platform for serious cyclists, those who want to have a go for a shorter distance are also welcome. We are expecting an increase in number of participants riding e-bikes and children can also participate, riding round the V8 track. Rotary is especially keen for children to take part in this year’s race, and is offering a whopping 50% discount off the entry fee for school teams of five or more. Younger children are also being encouraged to come along and ride around the track, on whatever wheels they would like. Although technically a cycle classic, last year saw at least one scooter riding child complete the circuit. Rides for children are only $10, payable on the day. A strong element of the Counties Cycle Classic has been the e-bike section. Run in the first year as a flat out race, the organisers

Is your dog scared of fireworks, thunderstorms, or anxious about new situations, people or other dogs? Anxiety is a common and real problem for many dogs and is often unrecognised by owners. were unaware that different e-bikes have different levels of electric assist, so this year it will be run as a time trial. E-bikes have become a booming industry, with bike shops reporting more sales of e-bikes than standard ones. One local retailer says his e-bikes are outselling pedal power 8-1. Counties Power, one of the event sponsors, are supporting e-bikes and electric vehicles (EV’s) The money raised through entry fees and sponsorship gets cycled back into the community. “Rotary is one of those great organisations that doesn’t clip the ticket on money it raises,” says Graham. “Once the costs like venue hire and traffic management have been covered, every dollar goes toward good causes, locally, nationally and internationally.” So far this year the Rotary Club of Pukekohe Inc. have put $20,000 towards Heart-Riding for the disabled, Pukekohe Community Action, Hospice, Te Akonga Early Learning Center, Pukekohe

Performing Arts, defibrillators around the region and sponsorship for a student to go on the Spirit of Adventure. The event also offers anyone who wants to volunteer, an exciting project to work on. The club is calling for volunteers to assist with marshaling riders around the three courses. “It’s a great opportunity to mix with like-minded folk, and help out where it’s needed.” Anyone who would like to volunteer is invited to e-mail Graham at graham@ghr.co.nz. Race distances include 42km for fun cyclists, 52km for intermediate cyclists, 97km for experienced cyclists, the 52km Counties Power Electric Bike Race and a ride around Pukekohe Park track for children and their caregivers. “I don’t care what you ride, so long as you come along and have fun on the day,” says Graham. Eraser

In your life, what would happen if you made no more “Bad Decisions” and that from now on, all that you ever did was kind, and good and uplifting? What would your life look like, and what a wonderful life it would actually be like, to be living such a life? Jeremiah 18:23 “Yet, LORD, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay [me]: forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight, but let them be overthrown before thee; deal [thus] with them in the time of thine anger.”

Exodus 32:33 “And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.” Psalm 51:1-10 “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin [is] ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done [this] evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, [and] be clear when thou judgest. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden [part] thou shalt make me to know wisdom. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness; [that] the bones [which] thou hast broken may rejoice. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”

Blot out mine iniquity, please God, quickly use your eraser on my sin and guilt, quickly remove it far from thee. Question; But what would then be ever left remaining that was wholesome and good, what is there left remaining?? Galatians 6:7-8 {MSG} “Don’t be misled: No one makes a fool of God. What a person plants, he will harvest. The person who plants selfishness, ignoring the needs of others – ignoring God! - harvests a crop of weeds. All he’ll have to show for his life is weeds! But the one who plants in response to God, letting God’s Spirit do the growth work in him, harvests a crop of real life, Eternal Life.” “What you sow you Grow.”

What would your “Record of your life” look like if “God’s Eraser” got going, and all your sins, failings and short comings were “Erased,” all those “Character Faults” were removed, so what would ever be left in your life? Would almost everything be removed, or just the odd tiny nasty wee blemish here or there? Would we need a minor “Renovation” or is there actually now just nothing to even start with, just a pile of weeds, rubbish and un-related litter, that we should call in the heavy machinery and scrape the ground clean and flat, dump all the rubbish into the dump trucks and haul it away, leaving a “Blank Canvas,” so where do we start, from nothing, and still at the very beginning, as nothing productive has been achieved, or do we just need a little touch up here or there to be Perfect as there was miniscule to Erase?

A Good Deed Indeed

The team from Action Office Products Depot (OPD) recently went across to Melbourne for their annual conference and awards ceremony. The weekend of antics and hilarity was an opportunity

1 Corinthians 3:9-17 “For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, [ye are] God’s building. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and [that] the Spirit of God d welleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which [temple] ye are.”

Question; what does the “Record of your Life” really look like? How much is not fit for viewing, and how much is recording your goodness, kindness, compassion and overcoming? If all the nasty thoughts, words and deeds, were erased, covered with white-out or Twink, or better still, never ever said or done in the first place, what would the record of your life actually look like? Galatians 6:7 “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” To adaptively Quote Daniel 5:27 “TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.” I God have Erased all your Sins and Failings, and I have found nothing left written down. You have failed to achieve anything, so I have rejected you as faulty. Let us always write the record of our lives so that nothing ever needs God’s “Eraser.”

to meet new colleagues, discuss business and generally get together to celebrate. The OPD co-operative has 25 members spread across the country, all of whom have a share in the national company. This operative method of business enables the group to offer a wider range of products at more competitive prices and provide support across the wider team. An annual shareholders meeting provides the members the opportunity to have input into the operations and management of the company. The group is administered by a national office, based in Takapuna, which provides support for all the outlets with promotions, joint ventures, electronic marketing and offering business guidance for the individual outlets. The Deed family joined the OPD co-op in 1996 and with their two outlets; Waiuku and Pukekohe, they are now one of the longest serving members within the group. Their business success was recognised at the awards evening receiving the High Flyer award, meaning that the dealership is tracking well to achieve the best growth year on year. Other awards were to recognise, Best Supplier of the Year, Deal of the Year and Sales Person of the Year.

The Waiuku Town Center cleanup on Saturday 7 September, was encouraged by a gorgeous spring clean type day. Many passionate individuals and amazing local community groups all pitched in to volunteer; Keep NZ Beautiful, GJ Gardner, City Care and Civic, and the Waiuku Business Association generously organised the delicious sizzling sausages and fruit. Darren Wilson from ITM rolled up his sleeves and assisted with his truck to get rid of the excessive amount of green waste that all the enthusiastic volunteers found. The generosity from the 92 wonderful volunteers, Waiuku Business Association team members and MBCT staff, who each donated four hours of their Saturday afternoon, was a fabulous way in which to serve the Waiuku community. There have now been 368 community service hours generously contributed to looking after the town center environment, which supports the saying, ‘many hands make light work’.

If you sat down one day, and went through your daily Diary, or Journal entries, and with a great big Eraser, started to rub-out all the bad things recorded there, how long before there would be just a book full of “Blank Pages” or just a few tiny bit of text of what you did right or overcame, here or there?

Centenarian Jos de Jongh at Buckland Bowling Club Opening Day By Joyce Brewer

The opening day for Buckland Bowling Club’s 2019/20 season on Saturday 21 September was a real community event with guest speakers Bill Cashmore and Andrew Bayly in attendance but they, along with the rest of us, were completely bowled over by the club’s oldest member. Centenarian Jos de Jongh threw the jack after the flag raising ceremony in an almost perfectly straight line with excellent weight to end up exactly at the right position, drawing gasps of awe, admiration and applause from the crowd. Jos didn’t make it easy for Bill and Andrew who really did try to get their bowls close to the jack but at least they gave it a go! Jos is an absolute legend, he just passed his driver’s licence renewal the other day, “I get to drive for another two years!” he chuckles boyishly. When recalling his bowling achievements, his face light’s up and you can clearly see the passion he has for the game. He has won 61 Club Championships, six Auckland titles, was an Auckland Rep and in his 90’s and has won three Counties titles. Now due to his health, Jos has to limit his time on the green to one or two games in the morning but still loves to play indoor at the Pukekohe Cosmopolitan Club whenever he can. Jos said “the highlight of my 100 years has to be my wonderful marriage of 72 years to Betty (Elizabeth) Darby from Mangatawhiri” who has now sadly passed away. Together they had three boys and a girl. The boy’s took over the family farm when Jos and Betty retired to Kohimarama and their daughter, Karen, has followed in his footsteps, taking up bowls and becoming a highly accomplished player. Jos is proud of his children, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Happy 100th Birthday Jos from all of us here at the District’s Post.

Local teen grabs NZ title By Kylie Hall

Wearing Waiuku Athletics yellow, Quinn strides out as he heads into the finishing chute. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Last Saturday he won a 32km local cycle race, and the next day he claimed a New Zealand title in a totally different sport! Waiuku teen, Quinn Gardiner-Hall, race walked his way through 3000m to win the gold medal in the U14 NZ Road Race Walking Championships. The 13 year-old, who boards at Auckland Grammar, hadn’t been able to get to many organised training sessions. “That’s OK though. I just took myself down to some parks after school and did my own thing, watching my times and thinking about my walk technique,” grins Quinn. During the event held at Bruce Pulman Park, several senior race walkers were disqualified, including one race walker who lost technique in the final steps as he raced an opponent to the finish line. “That was pretty rough but you’ve got to be so careful with your technique, as there are officials all around the course watching every move you make,” notes Quinn. Winter has seen the local lad focused on his first season of competitive cycling. As summer approaches, Quinn says he’ll add running and swimming to his training schedule for triathlon season, plus discus, shot put and high jump for a calendar full of athletics competitions, and some race walking of course. That should keep him busy!
