10,000 steps for Reid

Waiuku Lions are proud to be hosting the ‘Sand to Mud 10,000 steps By Jess Paton - jess@districtspost.media for Reid’ fun run this year. Reid Lovett is a local four year old who has a rare form of cerebral palsy, and this year the Waiuku Lions Club are supporting his cause. ll Waiuku Lion, Allan Standing said the event has been running for more than 40 years. “The money has gone back into the community, but just in little bits here and there, spread out over the community.” In 2019, the event name has had a slight revamp, to support Reid’s cause. All the proceeds from the eight kilometre run on Sunday 14 April will go directly to Reid and his family. “10,000 steps is equivalent to around eight kilometres, hence the reason behind the name,” explained Allan. Reid’s condition means his brain doesn’t send the right signals to his muscles, affecting his ability to move and walk normally and causing him quite a bit of pain. The Lovett family recently booked an intensive therapy course at the NAPA centre in Australia, thanks to funds already raised. Reid’s family hope to also raise enough

funds to get him to St Louis Children’s Hospital in Missouri, United States, for life changing selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) surgery which will remove the muscle tightness permanently, and enable Reid a better chance at normal movement in his life. Reid has been fortunate enough to have been accepted for the surgery and is currently on the cancellation list for this year. That means if they get the call, they can go if they have the money. “The family have raised $25,000 so far and they need $150,000,” advises Allan. “It’s a good cause. This event has been running for about 35 years and each year we’ve tried to do something a little different but this year the whole format has changed,” said Allan. The first male and female back will receive a medal and the first school team will take away a trophy. Buses will be provided for people to transport them to the start line of the eight km walk/run that starts at 10am. Book it in your diary and keep your eyes out for more information in the coming weeks!

Meet Reid Lovett Reid was a much awaited baby. He had a rocky start to life when he was born at just 28weeks (only six months gestation). Reid spent a couple of months in NICU (Newborn Intensive Care Unit) on breathing assistance and getting all the medical help he needed. This was a very tough time for the family. His family found out early about his diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy (CP) which enabled them to start researching and learning therapy techniques from the start to give Reid the best shot utilising as much brain power as possible in the early years. Reid’s CP affects his legs causing very tight muscles and therefore his ability to move and walk normally.

FREE MOVIES

Reid cannot currently walk unassisted and has ongoing therapy to maintain and strengthen his muscles. Public funding for any therapy in New Zealand is extremely limited (almost zero). The family say it is up to them to ensure Reid gets as much support in this area as possible. . They hope to get him to St Louis children’s hospital in the USA, which the event will help fundraise for. Reid’s parents, Emma and Steven say that Reid never fails to make people smile and his determination is inspiring, pushing through pain, pushing through frustration to gain confidence he didn’t know he has.

I ticked off something on my unwritten bucket list last week... I went to Rainbow’s End. Yes, I’ve lived in Auckland for nine years and only just went to ‘New Zealand’s premier theme park’. It wasn’t for fun though. It was part of a challenge, an Amazing Race. I was selected as ‘smartest person’ and got to go. I write smartest in inverted commas because you didn’t have to be smart, you just had to be able to down a litre of milk and a can of sprite and then ride the fear fall. Of course you didn’t know that before you were chosen, so it was all a surprise. The fear fall wasn’t too bad. I enjoyed the views on the way up which was surprisingly higher than I expected. The drop had me clinging on for dear life and while I didn’t scream, there was some noise that escaped my mouth, kind of what I imagine a wounded Rhino to sound like haha. As I’m sure I’ve said before, I’m not the biggest roller coaster ride fan. However, the last time I went on one was around 12 years ago in Australia, so it was probably time for a refresher. In the end, my first experience of the theme park is memorable, but not necessarily happy memories. And if you’re wondering, yes, I kept everything down and my bones will be stronger from all the calcium I consumed in such a short period. So my mini-visit to Rainbow’s End was a success. Maybe the next item I’ll tick off the bucket list will be going up the Skytower. Yeah I know, I haven’t been there either. What kind of Aucklander am I? Yana

The first shovel of earth is soon to be turned to create the Waiuku Trails with a resource consent now granted and advanced planning well underway. The Waiuku Walkways Committee will break ground in March, Franklin Local Board member Andrew Baker said. “We are really looking forward to it because a lot of hard work and planning has already gone into it, so seeing physical work begin will be exciting.” He said it has been a pleasure to put the plan in place alongside committee members. “The community can be proud of the work that’s been done to make this project a reality, because it is going to deliver a fantastic asset for our area. Waiuku is leading the way, showing what an empowered community can achieve by taking charge of its own outcomes.”

The committee presented the initial stages of the Waiuku Trails Plan to the Franklin Local Board last year, detailing how it would spend the board’s $300,000 budget allocation. A number of community volunteers have been involved in the project since it’s conception, and local contractors and businesses have stepped up with offers of help and discounted materials for walkways around the area. Trail planning and works will also see Awaroa Portage cleaned up and its protection ensured because of its value to the community and significance to mana whenua, who are also on the walkways committee. Franklin Local Board chair Angela Fulljames said the Waiuku Walkways Committee has set the bar for community involvement. “Franklin residents take a lot of pride in their areas, and none more than Waiuku.”

Is The Hill Your Home? Imagine what was and what could be… The opportunity to renovate the property with authenticity is a real possibility, as it is largely original. You can build, replicate or copy but you cannot create the atmosphere that only goes with time. This home requires work and imagination, but at the end of the project you will have a home like no other. In reality, a true place of history. This architecturally designed; Category B historic home has the benefit of retained exterior character with the potential for updating the interior for modern living. There is resource consent for two strategically placed sections yet these will not disrupt the privacy and magnificence of the grounds. What could be the best use of this property? Is it a wedding venue, high class café restaurant, guest house or a home like no other? These are decisions for the lucky purchaser.

Joining forces to combat distracted driving Pukekohe Police were joined by members from Auckland Transport on Thursday 21 February as part of an operation targeting distracted drivers. Drivers seen to be on their cellphones or not wearing seatbelts were pulled over on Manukau Road, a hotspot for the distracted. “Businesses and their customers have put in complaints about not being able to pull out safely on the road due to the number of drivers looking down at their phones,” said Sergeant Wayne Paxton. “It’s dangerous.” The idea behind last week’s operation was to have a conversation with the drivers about their actions, so that they understand there are consequences. “There is a misconception that you can hold your phone on speakerphone,” said Sergeant Paxton. “Things like looking on google maps or even changing music are distractions.” He encouraged people to buy

Police and AT were also joined by St John paramedic Clare Hinch. Clare has been in the job 11 years and attended a number of motor vehicle accidents. She said Thursday’s operation was a great opportunity to speak to the drivers. “I say to them, ‘I don’t want to see you,’ and many of them reply they don’t want to be in the back of an ambulance either,” she said. “Paramed-

If we can prevent just one accident from today, then it’s worth it. “It’s nice seeing people drive well too, and that positive reinforcement is important,” Clare said. Police also stopped drivers who were driving safely and wearing seatbelts, and they were awarded with some goodies from Auckland Transport.

Scrub fire at Pukekawa A scrub fire on Churchill Road, Pukekawa recently was successfully extinguished thanks to the help of local residents and emergency services. “On Sunday 17 February, four Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) appliances attended a grass fire in Pukekawa, which is now under control,” said a spokesperson from FENZ. Locals rallied together to prevent the fire spreading and Julian Austin even used all his tank water fighting the fire. “I just saw the start of fire as I was coming home,” said Julian. “So I grabbed my son and filled some buckets and headed back. By that time it had expanded from one metre wide to three! “We tried to contain it going in at least one direction and after a couple of trips back to home to refill we found we were out of water so had to stop. Luckily the fire brigade turned up at that time!” Julian described it as a small price to pay for keeping the community safe. “The crazy thing is it was all caused by a bird landing on the power pole, catching fire and landing in the dry grass,” he explained. A fire truck also made contact with a member of pubic at the scene. The FENZ spokesperson also said, “Police are investigating an incident in which a fire truck made contact with a member of the public on arrival at the scene.” “As first responders, Fire and Emergency personnel provided initial medical assessment and treatment for minor injuries, before St John Ambulance arrived.”

2018 was also the year that 150 volunteers and contributors gave their time and passion to collating the biographies of all the women from the Franklin region, who were registered on that momentous electoral roll. At first glance there were 1740 women on the roll. “But this included Waiheke Island!” exclaimed Heather Maloney, Convenor of the Franklin Branch of the NZ Society of Genealogists. “So, we pulled out just the ones that we felt fitted the Franklin area,” adds Heather, DOWN 1. Janet Haste who also worked on the project noted, “When researching the newspaper sources, it struck me how little was written about any of the married women of that time.” Likely a reflection of the old times where only the lives of the men were noteworthy. And now we have a female Prime Minister who gave birth to a baby in her first term! Oh, how times have changed. With funding assistance from the Franklin Local Board, and production advice from Bill and Ngaire Deed, several sets of the books have been produced and distributed to local libraries. An e-book has also been launched enabling curious readers to simply click to explore the wonderful pioneering women of Franklin right from the comfort of their couch. Sheryn Hull from the project team was responsible for setting up the online database and leading the development of the e-book. “One of the mantras of the Genealogy Society is to preserve for the future, and the future is digital. That is why we decided we just had to get it online,” stated Sheryn. With the e-book version, readers can search up the name of a person of interest online or scroll through the myriad of fascinating bios to gain an insight into history. What a birthday gift! Penny Prescott (right) from the Franklin Branch of the NZ Society of Genealogists presents Jean Phillpotts with a set of the treasured books.

Board, Angela Fulljames was on hand to cut the cake at the book launch celebration. She had uncovered new relatives herself through the book project and said to the genealogy team, “Thank you. You helped me discover and connect with more of my family history.” One very surprised recipient of a set of the precious books was Jean Phillpotts. Jean’s fabulous family had paid to have a set of books copied especially for Jean to celebrate her 80th birthday. “I am absolutely stunned!” cried Jean when presented with her set. Her great-great-grandmother Ellen Sinclair, an Irish woman who arrived in NZ in 1865 and who endured much heartache after losing numerous children in infancy, features in the book. This birthday gift will be a treasured keepsake. Happy birthday Jean!

MP urges parents to attend meeting Local MP Andrew Bayly is urging parents, teachers, boards of trustees and anyone with an interest in education throughout the Hunua electorate to attend a public meeting on the future of New Zealand’s education system. National is holding more than 40 public meetings throughout the country to listen to parents and teachers about their concerns and views on education issues. The meetings will cover general education issues but have a particular focus on the Tomorrow’s Schools Review. Along with Andrew, Papakura MP Judith Collins and National List MPs Kanwaljit Bakshi and Agnes Loheni are holding a joint meeting with National’s Education spokesperson Nikki Kaye in Papakura on March 22. “The changes proposed by the taskforce cover almost every aspect of our school system, including governance, teaching and learning, learning support, and enrolment schemes,â€? Andrew said. â€œThis is a once-in-a-generation chance to make some significant changes to our education system so it’s very important that the people involved in education – from parents through to school governance – understand what’s being proposed and get the chance to have their say.â€? He said the review has the potential to im-

pact every part of the education system. “The taskforce has undertaken significant consultation but it is clear from discussions with parents, boards of trustees and some educators, not all are aware of all of the recommendations. National has raised some serious concerns about the creation of around 20 education hubs, which would transfer more responsibilities from parents to officials. He is worried parents will be disempowered as a result. “Around 19,000 parents and trustees who currently sit on boards could be relegated to advisors with little ability to influence the education of their children.â€? However, Andrew said there are some positive aspects of the report in areas such as learning support, and National believes there is a need to improve governance and collaboration in the education system. “But the proposed changes are far reaching and must be carefully considered.â€? He expects the Papakura meeting will run for about an hour with some small presentations and the chance for people to ask the MPs questions. “Once the public meetings are complete, we will provide a summary of the feedback from them to the taskforce.â€? The meeting is on at 4pm, March 22, at Papakura High School, Willis Rd, Papakura. Children are welcome.

Smorgasbord Reunion The day had finally come and all was ready, the invitations had been long ago sent out, the follow ups and reminders had also followed along from time to time advising that the “Big Day” was getting very close, the Host had all the food well prepared, the venue was all ready, each and every seat had already been pre-paid for by the host, the day and hour was finally here, so now it was time for all the invited guests to rock on up, to celebrate and to feast and to fellowship, but would they come?

The Bible has a story found in Luke 14:16-24 “Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many: And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready. And they all with one [consent] began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come {ceremonially unclean}.

So that servant came, and showed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel [them] to come in, that my house may be filled. For I say unto you, that none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.”

The reality to this verse is this one, Revelation 19:7-9 “Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed [are] they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, these are the true sayings of God.” You see, God the Father, the supreme ruler of Heaven and Earth is throwing a huge celebration party, for you see, his only son Jesus Christ is getting married, and you all have been sent an invitation, but how will you respond.

Revelation 22:17 “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” John 14:3 “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, [there] ye may be also.” God is constantly sending out reminders, calling for a response, but how will you reply?

Luke 21:33-36 “Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and [so] that day come upon you unawares. For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.” John 3:16-17 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”

God is constantly sending out to each and every one of us a constant stream of reminders, in the sunshine and the rain, dawn and sunsets, flowers and trees, streams, lakes and rivers, the ocean waves, birds, butterflies, animals and all nature, the starry heavens are all calling out to us God’s undying love, but are we actually listening and will we respond? Has the cares of this life, the daily grind, that endlessness erased from your mind the real reason that we are here in this age, that we have life, but Jesus Christ is crying out for us to respond to his “Smorgasbord Reunion” which is very close, and it would not be the same if you fail to be there in attendance, so look up and live “In Christ” and confirm your invitation, and then daily to be ready.

You see, in Bible Times, the Wedding Invitation went out, along with the appropriate dress clothing, so that no matter your wealth, or lack thereof, you could always proudly attend. You placed the robe up on the shelf and kept it always clean and ready, and when the knock on the door came to take you to the celebration, it only took a moment to slip on the garment and slip out the door and off to the celebration. Or like Jesus’s Parable, are you going to decline, have you unfitted yourself for the purity of Heaven, has the Perfect Robe been carelessly mistreated and now it is an embarrassment and never fit to be ever seen, has it been ruined by the cares of this life, stopping you from attending. Now is the time to respond to God’s “Smorgasbord Reunion” and to get your life clean, and to accept “The Robe of Christs Righteousness” and to keep that pure and clean always, see you there at the Banquet.

Franklin Hospice blooming after Garden Ramble Once again Franklin Hospice has come up trumps to benefit from their biannual Barfoot and Thompson Franklin Hospice Garden Ramble. ll The event took place over the weekend of 10 and 11 November 2018 with a ramble through eighteen large country gardens in the Drury, Ramarama, Bombay Hills, Tuakau and Pukekohe areas. Local branches of Barfoot and Thompson in Pukekohe, Tuakau, Waiuku and Papakura again came on board as the Platinum Sponsor as well as making their design teams and branch staff available for the event. Last week, an afternoon tea was held at Franklin Hospice, to thank the garden owners for opening up their gardens for the event. A cheque and a donation of $96,700 to Franklin Hospice was the result of fantastic support from the community – from the individuals willing to open their garden for the event; businesses advertising in tickets and donating products for sale at the Christmas market; companies and Trusts willing to sponsor some of the costs of the event; volunteers from service groups and other organisations who willingly manned gates to gardens; prepared lunches or man-

aged traffic; to members of the public who bought their tickets and who braved Sunday’s inclement weather to support the cause. This year the dates coincided with 100 years of Armistice Day and so on the 11th day of November at 11am all ‘garden ramblers’ were gifted Flanders Poppy seeds courtesy of McCulloughs and Egmont Seeds. The funds raised this year will be used to provide counselling services to help families cope with the stress, trauma and grief involved in nursing the terminally ill. The counsellor will

be an integral part of the clinical team of Hospice who currently provide in home care for the patient to enable them to remain with loved ones and in their own surroundings. This donation is important to Franklin Hospice to enable it to provide services to the district free of charge. Big heart appeal Big hearted street collectors were out in the community on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 February, collecting donations for the Heart Foundations ‘Big Heart Appeal. ll Every 90 minutes a New Zealander dies of heart disease and New Zealand’s heart disease statistics are confronting, with more than 6500 Kiwis dying of it every year, making it our country’s single biggest killer. The Heart Foundation’s Big Heart Appeal will help raise money to fund research that will ultimately save and improve the lives of Kiwis living with heart disease. Silver Fern Michaela Sokolich-Beatson manages a heart condition, while television personalities Suzy Cato, Miriama Kamo and Renee Wright all have family and whanau living with heart disease. The Heart Foundation’s medical director Gerry Devlin says, “Not only do one in five New Zealanders die from heart disease, but more people than ever before are living with a heart condition. And it’s not just the elderly who are at risk. One in five people admitted to hospital with heart disease are under A big hearted street collector at Mitre 10 Waiuku last Friday. 60 years old.” PHOTO: JESS PATON

Floral arrangements spreading kindness Beautiful floral arrangements, from citizenship ceremonies in Pukekohe, have been re-gifted to the local community in mysterious but special gestures of kindness recently. Jess Paton jess@districtspost.media

The Citizen Ceremonies are organll ised by Auckland Council Events and Celeste Rutowski from Venue Hire, said “They have an amazing young man called Ross Gallagher who works many hours and goes above and beyond for all the events in South Auckland. He is the one who re-gifts the flowers!” Celeste recently gifted a bunch of flowers to Nansi Thompson, Facility Manager at Franklin Arts Centre, as she thought she deserved them. The flowers were left at the gallery entrance as a

mysterious surprise for Nansi. “Nansi is an extraordinary woman, who has such a big heart for art and the community! She brings so much life and adventure into our very own Franklin Art Galley.” Another bunch of flowers was gifted to Pukekohe Maternity hospital and they were personally delivered by Pukekohe Policeman Wayne Paxton. “Wayne Paxton is another amazing person in our community. He does sound and lighting for events as a second job and does some council events like the Citizen Ceremony,” said Celeste. “After he finished and packed away all his sound gear for the night, he still made time to drop the flowers at Pukekohe Hospital.” Celeste notes, “It’s a story or mystery of how two arrangements of flowers can make new citizens (myself also being an immigrant becoming a citizen

two years ago) feel welcome and show them we care. “Re-gifting them to spread more joy to an extraordinary gallery manager, Nansi, and to the maternity ward where we welcome our precious new arrivals to Puke, by our very own Policemen that keep us safe! What an amazing community we have.”

Little Ants with a big heart On Monday 11 February 2019, the Little Ants carpark was abuzz with excitement and activity. As part of the centre’s Healthy Heart week promotion they had organised a bike day. The children all bought in their bikes, scooters and helmets from home, and they took turns throughout the day having a go on the track the staff had created. The preschool children, as they had longer to wait for their turn, also created traffic signs and decorated their bikes. They had an amazing time and made the team proud, showing their caring sharing spirit, taking turns on each other’s bikes, giving advice and demonstrations to the other not so confident cyclists amongst them. Centre manager Linda Dyer said the week was a great opportunity to help educate the children about keeping healthy and safe,

Harrisville School was buzzing with excitement on Friday 22 February when Loren Stockley from Motorcycle New Zealand paid them a visit with Cody Cooper, New Zealand’s topranked Kiwi in motocross and his mechanic Lee. There was a question and answer session followed by an awesome demonstration from Cody on his Honda, cheered on by the students. Round 3 of the NZ Motocross Championships was held at the Harrisville MX track on Sunday 24 February.

Lawson will this season compete in the Formula European Masters competition with Team Motopark. Winner of both the 2019 New Zealand Grand Prix and the 2019 Castrol Toyota Racing Series, Lawson will compete in the nine round series at a number of tracks he competed in the 2017 German ADAC F4 Championships. “I have raced at Hockenheim several times and I really like that circuit,” commented Lawson. The one I am most looking forward to is Brands Hatch in the UK. There is so much history around that circuit and the up and down nature of the track will make for a great challenge.” Racing gets underway 3-5 May at Hockenheim.

F SHING with

Smudge Some have been finding snapper fishing off the coast pretty tough while others are reporting great catches. I guess it’s all a matter of right time and right place. Depths around 50 to 60m seem to be the most consistent for snapper. There are plenty of kahawai and gurnard around though, especially in the shallower water. Off Port Waikato the fish are more prolific and are certainly in nice and close. The real action out west though is coming from gamefish. There have been many reports of packs of marlin smashing up bait schools on the surface with a lot of anglers reporting multiple hook ups. While 80m to 115m seems to be holding the most fish, there have been marlin sighted and caught in as close as 40 metres. Often the fish are actively feeding but won’t readily take lures, the crews who go prepared with live baits often have the advantage in this situation. I’m often asked where the marlin are being caught with most wanting to know if the fish are north or south of the bar. The tales I am hearing don’t really point to a pattern, one day they are north, the next they may be south, or they may be anywhere! I know that’s not much help but that’s how it is. I’m no game fishing expert but most fishermen coming in to weigh a fish are usually happy to share some intel and that’s how I get my marlin reports. Of course I can’t give away their secrets but general information is always welcome. Skipjack and albacore tuna are around too of course and in the last few weeks more mahimahi have also been caught. Most of these spectacular looking fish have been small, but they don’t seem to mind taking marlin lures. Harbour fishing has been going well, although

Bernard Cave caught this Marlin on Thursday 21 February 2019 it hasn’t been an exceptional year so far. Typically from February through to May is the best time for snapper fishing in the harbour with the Autumn and earlier winter providing the bigger snapper. I know of snapper up to 8lb so far, which is not too shabby at all. Kingfish are plentiful and you will catch more of them if you actively fish for them rather than taking the approach of hoping to catch on with your snapper techniques. Live baits, jigs and top water lures all work well. There is only one certainty with fish-

ing though and that is you won’t catch a thing unless you are out there doing it. Most successful anglers spend a lot of time on the water and that’s how they hone their craft. It’s important to remember too that there are very few people who really do catch loads of fish each time they go out. We all have days when we struggle and those are the days that teach us the most. Local axemen take title at Pukekohe show Onewhero opening day The Waiuku Axemen’s Club hosted woodchopping in the Douglas Arena at the Counties Power 133rd Pukekohe Show on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 February 2019. Local axemen competed against visiting axemen and women from further afield during the weekends events. Many of those attending are currently, or have been, New Zealand representatives. All being talented, skilful and professional in their chosen disciplines. Over the two days competitors entered in standing, underhand, single saw, double power saw, tree felling, spring board, underhand elimination, teams race, chain saw and axe throw events. Event 5 and 9 were Counties Power 325mm hard hitting standing Championship and 325mm standing Championship. Event 8 on Saturday saw the crowd pleasing Tuatahi racing axes and saws 325mm Tree Felling Championship New Zealand Title, with Jesse Whitehead taking it out from Willy McDonald. The axemen climb the “tree” by cutting holes in the sides to stablise an inserted board that must take their weight for them to progress to the top, where they cut one side of the block. They then climb down and repeat the same procedure on the other side to reach the top to complete cutting the block off.

Event 3 on Sunday was the 250mm Springboard Championship, a shortened “tree” from Saturday’s event 8, where those competing climb to the top and cut the block on the top board from both sides. Event 4 on Sunday, the T. Howard & Sons 300mm Underhand Elimination New Zealand Title was fiercely contended as axemen paired off against one another to find the outright winners. Event 5 the Stihl Shop Pukekohe Teams Race held the crowds attention with the four men/ women teams competing in a chainsaw underhand single saw and standing block. Event 6 the Stihl Shop Pukekohe Chainsaw event saw axemen and women pit their skill against one another with all competitors fully kitted out in safety gear, from chaps to earmuffs and protective glasses. The points prize for Saturday was won by Bruce Tumwald, with Harry Hardie winning Sunday’s points prize, along with winning the overall points prize having competed at all four meets (16 and 17 November 2018 and 16 and 17 February 2019) for the Bill Baker Memorial Cup presented by Mr and Mrs Ces Pennell and family of Pukeoware in recognition of Bill Baker being an official starter from 1958, 1972 and being strongly contested for yearly since 1975 . Miniature horses back to strut their Golf stuff Results

Franklin Miniature Horse Club are hosting the Association of Independent Miniature Horse Clubs New Zealand Incorporated (AIMHCNZ) National Miniature Horse show again this year.

It is the second time the club have hosted the show, which will take place at the Pukekohe Showgrounds from 1- 3 March. Amanda Wilson, president for the Franklin Club, said the show is “what horses can do, just with smaller ones.” Friday 1 March is performance day, with trail, jumping, harness and long reining. On Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 March, are the halter days with breed, showmanship, colour and specialty classes. Judging starts at 8.30am each day.

Onewhero Golf Club held their opening day earlier in January. It was a day where club members geared up for battle, the lost ball, forgotten club, and finding that elusive club cover. The competition was on to see who had the highest stableford, lowest nett and the biggest golden egg of all time, the hole in one. Club president John O’Brien got everyone excited and revved up for day ahead by giving everyone a few words and reminded them about upcoming competitions, before the day hit off with a bang when Denise Orton Opened with the first tee off of the season. Not that she was under much pressure with everyone watching. Pictured right: Club President John O’Brien. PHOTO SUPPLIED

Business deals. Property developments. Family dramas.

FINANCIAL YEAR END

We’ve got a lawyer for that. At Arnet Law we specialise in commercial, property and family law. We can help you with the basics, like wills trusts and conveyancing, right up to the tricky stuff; including business sales and acquisitions, property. Whatever you’re doing, you’ll get expert advice from your straight-talking local legal team.

Since this is our last posting before the financial year end, 31st March, we thought this might be a good opportunity to provide some information with regard to the preparation of financial year end. Some of the things need to be prepared rather in advance than later. Profit Review(Estimation) – Have you paid sufficient provisional tax for the 2019 year so far? From this financial year, you could make up your provisional tax on the last instalment, 7th May. If you used a standard method and have paid the first and the second instalments on time, as long as you make up the balance on the last instalment, use of money interest won’t be charged on the shortfall of the first and the second instalments. Of course, there is a threshold for this exception which is $60,000 in residual income tax (RIT). If your RIT is $60,000 or over, you are still required to make equal instalments on the projected provisional tax amounts. Bad Debts - If you have any customers who are unlikely to pay their debts then you must have them written-off before 31 March (i.e. before you close the processing of your March Accounts Receivable Ledger). This does not prevent you from still chasing them through legal methods. Staff Bonuses and Holiday Pay - Employers can claim a tax deduction on bonuses and holiday pays if the payment is made by 2nd June 2019 provided the expense has been incurred prior to 31 March. Assets - Have a look at your asset schedule and identify any assets that have been scrapped during the year. Update the fixed asset schedule accordingly. Complete your stock take - If your sales are less than $1.3 million then you can use the same value of your opening stock as the closing stock provided you can estimate your closing stock to be less than $10,000. In all other cases, if you are selling goods then you must count and value your trading stock as at the last day of your income year. If you hold any consumables, this does not need to be included provided they cost less than $58,000. Deductions for Prepaid Expenses - In some circumstances certain prepaid expenses will qualify for a deduction in the current year. If you not sure about this, please contact us.

Tax pooling

From the 2018, with the new provisional tax instalment process introduced, the uncertainty in installing the right amounts has reduced, which in turn significantly lowered taxpayer’s risk of exposure to UOMI. However, taxpayers may find themselves in a situation where they have had their tax in a particular period assessed and then for some reason this amount has been reassessed.

This could, for example, be the result of an error the taxpayer has identified in the calculation of their tax liability for the period, or at the resolution of a dispute. If there has been an underpayment as a result, the UOMI will be imposed. In some cases, the underpayment rate is higher than a company's commercial borrowing rate. Tax pooling will allow taxpayers to pool tax payments, offsetting underpayments by overpayments within the same pool, thereby reducing their UOMI exposure. If you need any advice or assistance in relation to tax pooling, please also contact us.

Minimum wages

score From 1 April 2019, the minimum will be revised to $17.70 per hour. Starting-out and trainees’ rate will be 80% of the ordinary minimum wages, $14.16 per hour.
