Liam wins NZGP, the title and Kiwi race fans

On Tuesday 14 February 2017, The Post ran the front-page headline ‘Champion and World Beater’. Liam Lawson had just won the NZ1600 championship and became, at the time, the world’s youngest Formula Ford champion over 50 years. Now, two years later, on Sunday 10 February, the Pukekohe ll teenager beat some top international drivers to become a New Zealand Grand Prix winner and Toyota Racing Series cham-

pion, and just the second rookie to win both prizes in the 15 years of the championship. That other winner, Lando Norris, this year makes his Formula 1 debut driving for McLaren. Liam has been making waves since the opening race of the Toyota Racing Series [TRS] at the Highlands circuit near Cromwell where he took two victories on debut. His incredible passing manoeuvres and dominant wins put him firmly in the spotlight both here and overseas. Throughout the quick-fire five weeks of racing, Liam and

fellow Kiwi driver Marcus Armstrong put on a thrilling display of motor racing that had race fans across the country on their feet, cheering on the intense round by round battle that went all the way to the final race of the season, the NZGP. In the end Liam beat Marcus to the championship title by 10 points. The lead changed between them throughout the series and finally swung in Liam’s favour over the last round at Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon. Over the 15 races in TRS, Liamwon five and had 11 podiums. “To win the Grand Prix and the championship in my first season is pretty cool,” said Liam afterwards, who got to win the NZGP the day before his 17th birthday. “Like I said many many times, I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. It’s been so close the whole series. Every race it’s been changing between the leaders.” Since stepping into his first race car from karting, Liam has won on debut in every style of car he has driven. Formula First, Formula Ford, Formula 3, Formula 3 Asia and now the Toyota Racing Series. That kind of success along with finishing second in both the Australian and German Formula 4 championships in his rookie season has led to numerous offers to race back in Europe this year. Liam’s parents, Jared and Kristy can hardly believe what their son has achieved and where he is heading. “We’re super proud of Liam’s achievements as a family, the racing was simply fantastic from all the competitors and we can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds,” said Jared. Whichever European series Liam gets to race in, it will be a step up to the next level, a Formula 3 car. That’s just two below his ultimate goal, to drive a Formula 1 car.

YANA’S

Yarn

Happy Birthday to my older brother Liam. 27! Nothing like a birthday to remind you you’re getting on in life haha. I’m sure many of you reading will say he’s just a spring chicken. And it’s true 27 is the new... 20? As the two eldest kids in our family, we always say we were the tester children. Mum and Dad got it right with the others, while we were the practice round haha. One time I couldn’t get in contact with Liam, who knows, he was probably busy, and didn’t want to help a sister out. Anyway, I had a little brainwave, and I text him to say “I think I broke your computer...” I’m sure you can guess that he replied in record time haha. Sorry about that Liam, but at least I got the answers I needed in the end. Life hacks with Yana. Last week I wrote about my friend and her baby, and that week I also got to meet little Theodore. He’s a little cutie, with tiny little nose, but also a great set of lungs. I’m not much of a baby whisperer, but Theo was well behaved and in all honesty, didn’t do much besides stare at me and make a few funny noises. Seriously though, shout out to all the Mums out there. You are amazing! I did a bit of summer cooking on the bbq the other night. I don’t mean to sound like Gordon Ramsey or Jamie Oliver, but I did a good job. I didn’t do much except stare at the food, shift it round a few times and click the tongs together to check they still worked. Everyone survived my cooking, so that’s always a plus! I hope you’re enjoying these warm summer nights! Yana

Feeling the love By Kylie Hall

Students from Pukekohe High School were feeling the love on Valentine’s Day. Guys and gals got dressed up in theme and an “in-school” rose delivery service was kept busy. Students could purchase a rose and have it delivered to their Valentine, either with their name or as an anonymous admirer. Pictured right: Awww cute! Taylor Everitt and Emily Perry, both year 13 students, were letting cupid’s arrow fly last week on Valentine’s Day.

Baker’s banter

With Andrew Baker: Deputy Chair Franklin Local Board

The wild fires we see raging in and around Nelson should be a stark reminder to people of how quickly things can get out of hand. There is a well known saying that every large fire starts as a small fire. Our self appointed media experts have already determined the cause of this fire, however what will not be in dispute when the actual cause is found, is that it will have started as something small and probably pretty innocuous. It might have been able to have been controlled at that point if there had been appropriate levels of awareness about the risk of fire starting and spreading, mitigation of those risks and availability of things able to possibly extinguish or control a fire until further help arrived. I am not there so maybe all those things were in place, but from my many years experience within rural fire management, I doubt it, but as we say hindsight vision is always 20/20. I know though that the previous and current national, regional and local fire organisations have always spent vast amounts of money trying to understand the science around wild fire and how best to not only mitigate the risk of fires being able to start and spread, to look at how to manage the variance of land use, vegetation, weather, other climatic conditions and moisture content in vegetation. That has led to high profile generalised campaigns about fire danger, engagement with high risk industries such as forestry where losses from fires can be catastrophic in so many ways and of by Simon Huggett

course the media attention given to huge wild fires as previously seem mainly in Australia, Canada and USA to which NZ has always sent skilled and dedicated fire fighters and emergency management personnel to assist. Yet it would seem, the message here at home about the need to respect the volatility of fire seems to be maintained in the “she’ll be right” file in our minds. Well the “that won’t happen here” bubble has just been burst. Fires love fuel, the dryer the better and it loves air to breathe which is pretty available with our normally present winds. High humidity can help but once a fire gets started, natural moisture in the air doesn’t really cut the mustard and once an established fire takes hold, even bulk water without special modifying additives struggles to not be turned into steam as it hits the bubble of extreme heat surrounding the actual flames. There are some real heroes down in Nelson fighting this fire. Probably over 90 per cent of the crews on the ground will be volunteer fire fighters. Those people with properties needing protecting, families to worry about and paying jobs and lives they have had to put on hold to work in unbelievably difficult conditions to put right something that probably could have been prevented…time will tell on that. So to those people and to all our volunteers who put themselves at risk for the benefit of others…you are legends, heroes and so important. To everyone, treat fire and fire risks seriously please.

Television Producers and Green Beans Nice blue background aye? I am down at the local pool filming a great future champion ready to breakthrough. I have an old DVD of Jersey Shore that I pulled out and had a quick look at again. Jersey Shore is a reality tv show on the MTV channel, created by SallyAnn Salsano. Jersey Shore was one of the most successful reality tv shows. It made stars and millionaires out of characters like Snooki, The Situation and Ronnie. It made Salsano millions. Another successful producer is Andy Cohen of the Real Housewives brand and many other successful shows. He is now worth $15 million US. After I have finished producing, directing, writing, filming and pulling my hair out with short doco “I am Franklin”. I will go again. Go around the bend that is.

Thanks heaps to my wonderful neighbour Joyce for dropping by the green and yellow fresh beans straight from her garden. Keeping us lean and strong. I’ve been baking them in cakes. It’s a nice surprise to eat a chocolate cake with healthy green beans. Yum yum! Have you been looking up at the stars ? BELIEVE! Get to it.

PHOTO: AUCKLAND WESTPAC RESCUE HELICOPTER

Thursday 14 February was a busy day for emergency services who were called twice to Pokeno. One crash occurred around 12.45pm on SH1, while there was a second just over an hour later. The first was a truck vs truck at the interchange of SH1 and SH2, a Police spokesperson said. One of the drivers was transported to Middlemore Hospital with serious injuries. The second crash was a logging truck that rolled just after the Pokeno off-ramp on Great South Road. Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter W1 crew were tasked to Pokeno at 2.05pm to assist a male patient in his 60s who was the sole driver/occupant of a truck and trailer that lost control going down a hill, causing the truck to jack-knife and roll. He was still being extricated from the vehicle when Westpac 1 arrived. He suffered multiple injuries and was in a critical condition. It was decided that travelling to Middlemore Hospital by road would be faster than flying W1 there after taking off and landing. He was accompanied by Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter’s Intensive Care Paramedic and HEMS Doctor. Tuakau Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to both incidents. The first crash required back up from Mercer and Papatoetoe Brigades, while the second required both Papatoetoe and Papakura to accompany the Tuakau and Mercer crews.

Shane and Mark Edwards won two gold in the Men’s single and tube rescues and two bronze, while Hogan Shrimpton and Anton Baptist had a very consistent day with three silver medals and a bronze. U22 men’s saw Judd Redman and Jhett Hunt end with a silver and bronze. All teams contributed to a massive team score of 179 points with Mairangi Bay on 63. Malcolm Beattie President of Sunset Beach Lifeguard Service said, “Another amazing effort by this dedicated team. You only reach the top of the mountain if the team is committed. Sunset once again showed True Grit.” Kariaotahi had 22 competitors entering the champs, making seven finals on day one of racing. Maddison and Shannon were awarded the bronze medal in the Mass Rescue. The following day, the team made two more finals but were unable to add to the medal tally. The women’s crews combined for the team’s race and came through a close fourth in the final. The open men’s were first home in both the heat and semi final teams race against strong competition but were disqualified for a technicality during the transition. The open women’s of Maddison and Shannon battled their way through heats to make the open women’s tube rescue final. Brad Walters, President for Surf Life Saving Kariaotahi said, “Overall it was a great weekend, and the team should be proud of themselves. Kariaotahi finished sixth, gaining the highest points and position since at least 2012. A massive congratulations to our fellow competitors who made the podium and our amazing patients for such a stellar effort.”

Spring Hill is a place of industry, rehabilitation and learning. Staff work with prisoners who are participating in training programmes, supervised work inside the prison grounds and working outside preparing for release. A few hundred metres down the road from the prison is the building refurbishment yard, one of only two in the country, where Housing New Zealand homes are given a new lease of life. It also has a new builds yard with covered bays where new buildings can be created. These yards provide prisoners with training and employment opportunities in building, plumbing and painting and decorating. The prison features industry training workshops, where prisoners can gain trade qualifications and skills inside the wire. We’re looking for building instructors with great communication skills, who are calm under pressure and work well in a team. You’ll need to believe people can change, and thrive in an environment where every day is different and sometimes challenging.

MEET ANDREW After nearly 15 years as a joiner and cabinet maker, Andrew wanted a change. His passion for helping people and giving back to the community is what led him to a career with Corrections. The guys we’re teaching are eager to learn and enjoy putting into practice what they’ve been taught.” Another aspect that drew Andrew to the job was the ability to upskill himself.

“The best thing about the job is being able to pass on my knowledge and skills to the prisoners we work with”, says Andrew.

“There’s a big focus on career development here. I’ve had the opportunity to gain my National Certificate in Adult Education and Training (Level 5) and other relevant trade qualifications in forklift driving, mobile elevated work platforms, fall arrest working at heights and scaffolding.”

“We have a real opportunity to make a difference by teaching these guys skills they can use to find employment when released.”

Andrew says being an instructor at Corrections does have its challenges but is incredibly rewarding at the same time.

Andrew teaches in a workshop where prisoners construct self-contained portable cabins.

“We’re not only teaching these guys practical skills, we’re mentoring them and helping them to make positive changes in their lives.”

Where resides your God? So often when you talk to people you wonder where their god resides, so often, like Israel past, their god lives only in their past. Once upon a time, long time ago, far far away, God parted the Red Sea to rescue us from slavery and death, once upon a time god went into battle before us and our enemies fell at our feet, once upon a time, and so it goes on, their god is a god active only in their past. In the Old Testament there is a wonderful story about a man who went out to the forest and cut down a tree, took it home, from a portion he carved out an image and that became his god, from some more he made a lovely fire and warmed himself, and then he gathered some more of the tree and made a fire and cooked a lovely meal, then he praised his new god for keeping him warm and for providing a lovely warm nourishing meal. From Isaiah 44:9-20.

How often do you meet people who can tell you time, date and place that they were saved, past tense, and then talk long about the god of their past, is your god only a god consigned to the past? In Israel past, so often God was confined to their past, but there was always a burning hope of “God in the Future.” One day God will take us out of captivity and return us to the Promised Land, one day God will restore, one day God will, and so the list goes on, one day in the future. God is so often consigned to the Future, and sometimes it is more as a Fantasy than a reality, Where Resides your God?

God of the Current? Oh No, God once did, God will in the Future do, why not the “God of the Present,” God active right now, well that is a scary thought. Actually are you more comfortable with a god that is consigned to the past and consigned to the future, with God kept at a comfortable distance, why does that make us more comfortable keeping God far away from us, keeping him far away from us so that he does not impact or interfere with our daily lives.

The God of the Bible is “Past – Present – and Future” so why the problem. Psalm 139:7-12 “Whither shall I go from thy spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou [art] there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou [art there]. [If ] I take the wings of the morning, [and] dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light [are] both alike [to thee].” Back to the critical sentence, “Or whither shall I flee from thy presence?” Romans 8:35-39 “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? [Shall] tribulation, or distress, or persecution,

or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, for thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Here Paul is admonishing us that his God, “Our God” is the God of the Present as well as the God of the Future. God is always in the Past, he has done amazing and miraculous things in the lives of men, and is well able to continue to do these wonderful acts right now.

John 14:12-15 “Verily, verily, I [Jesus] say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater [works] than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do [it]. If ye love me, keep my commandments.” The disciples very first missionary journey is recorded for us in Mark 6:12 “And they went out, and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed [them].” To the Disciples, God was current, present, active, real.

School’s in for Richard

By Yana O’Gorman yana@districtspost.media

While he started his role in July last year, Pukekohe High School’s principal Richard Barnett is ready to start his first full year at the school. He is enjoying living locally and being part of the community. “Franklin is a great community,” he said. Richard had previously been at Christchurch’s Burnside High School, as associate principal. Before that, he was in the UK. “I originally came here 15 years ago on a teacher exchange.” That led to him moving his family back to New Zealand. Pukekohe High School has a role of 1750, smaller than his other schools, but this is one that he is taking charge of. “The Ministry of Education have said it’s only going to grow.” And with the new housing developments in the area, the school has already seen an increase in students. The focus for Richard and the staff is for the future. “Growth is exciting. There are new possibilities.” The school are currently upgrading one of the buildings to increase watertightness and earthquake proof. “There is a bit of disruption, but it will be worth it in the long run,” he said. “We want it to last the distance. There is a lot to build on. Pukekohe High School will also be celebrating their 100th anniversary this year,” he said. In terms of a specific focus for the year, a visit from the Education Review Office (ERO) has given them some pointers. “We have a pretty clear idea of our goals for the next two years,” Richard said. “We have a sharp focus. We want to meet the needs of all our students.” One of those focuses will be on careers and pathways through school. “We want our students to succeed at whatever they do after school. We have a diverse roll with students from all nationalities and ethnicities.”

Richard enjoys getting out in the school. “Sometimes you just have to take a walk around the school. When I walk around, there’s a real buzz and vibrancy.” He said the staff and teachers have been amazing. “I am a beginner principal, and they have been great while I find my feet. We are starting to make changes and they’ve been hugely supportive.” As principal, it’s difficult to meet with all 1750 students, so his relationships with the head students are pivotal. “I have a routine of meeting with them regularly. They have great ideas and enthusiasm. They have such school pride.” Richard has found the students across all year levels to be friendly and respectful. “I am excited about being here at the start of the year. We did lots of planning last year, so it’s great to get to implement those plans this year.”

Exodus 25:8 “And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.” Here God is asking Israel, as they journey from Slavery to Freedom, to build him a tent, similar to theirs, so that he might live among them, and so many missed the point. Isaiah 66:23 “And it shall come to pass, [that] from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.” Here Isaiah is prophesying that some-day, future and present we’ll meet on a weekly basis, as all flesh will come weekly and present themselves before God, meet, greet, fellowship, and Sabbath Rest and Worship God, every week.

Emily TeKani, Antony Greenfield and Grant Domigan of Barfoot & Thompson Waiuku (front left to right) get stuck in at the Waiuku Community Garden with the helpful assistance of the green fingered team from Franklin Agri-Tech.

Barfoots get growing The God of the Bible is Past, he has done; The God of the Bible is Present, he can do; The God of the Bible is Future, he will do, so “Where resides your God?”

One of the magic aspects of living in smaller communities, is the generosity of many of our local businesses. Last week, the call went out to the Barfoot & Thompson Waiuku team to drop their ‘For Sale’ signs and pick up a spade instead. Their destination - the Waiuku Community Garden. By Kylie Hall

Managed by Te Marama Hou Ministries Trust and led by Grace van der Brink, the garden is a hub of goodness and a place for the community to gather and share. The Barfoots garden team pulled

up their sleeves and got busy planting a myriad of green goodies including; cabbages, silverbeet, lettuces and cauli. Dennis Fong of Desloe Produce organised for 1200 seedlings to be donated from Seedling Systems, the largest seedling propagation nursery in South Auckland. The local realtors couldn’t get them all planted on the day but they gave it a good crack and will be returning soon for a weeding day. Shane Ogle, Branch Manager of Barfoot & Thompson Waiuku said they were keen to get involved with

a local initiative that provided direct support to the community. Antony Greenfield of Barfoots commented, “I was really grateful for the opportunity to be involved and it was very encouraging to meet so many folk dedicated to improving our community.” Shane and Antony were joined by Emily TeKani, Paul Gardiner and Grant Domigan, and all enjoyed getting back to nature and giving back to their community. “It’s exciting knowing that eventually what we planted today, will be on someone’s plate very soon,” enthused Emily.

‘Princess Charlotte’ finds new castle

A cat that appeared on the doorstep of Anne and Sandy Cooper’s house a couple of days before Christmas in bad condition is lucky to have found a new home By Jess Paton

The tortoiseshell cat, nicknamed “Princess Charlotte,” was just skin and bone, wet and straggly and had huge fur balls everywhere. “There was a few fights to get rid of them,” laughed Sandy. Anne said, “We thought someone would come looking for her but no-one did! Sandy fed her and we put an expensive flea collar on her but we couldn’t keep her because it upsets

our cat!” The couple have a Siamese cat called ‘Isis - the god of magic’ and the issue of territory meant the two cats couldn’t be happy together. “Charlotte is so affectionate.” She loves company and the couple guess she is about seven months old. Flyers were put up at a Pukekohe pet shop and the vets with no success, until the couple got talking at their stall at the Pukekohe markets on Saturday. “One of the market stall holders girls cats had just not long died and she wanted another one, so we sent the cat in the basket with her,” said Anne. “They’ve rung and told us Princess Charlotte is very happy in her new home. Our Siamese is very happy too!”

Before and after of Onewhero Area Schools fence.

Members of the public volunteered their time from 7:30am to around 9pm on Thursday 14 February to fix the fence that surrounds the basketball/netball courts. Pukekohe Hire helped with a scissor lift to make the job flow a lot quicker and safer and @ONE Contracting donated labour and tools for the day. Students from the school enjoyed helping out as well.

Bent poles were straightened, loose connections were tightened and welded, the fence was rewired and all edges clipped and rust converted and zinc’d. The fence received plenty of love on Valentine’s Day, and Simon Craggs, principal of Onewhero Area School said, “Thanks to everyone who contributed. The fence looks amazing!”

Anglican Waiuku Church site to be sold The Anglican Diocese of Auckland has made a decision to sell their church site on Queen St, Waiuku. This decision has come after much careful consideration by the Diocesan Council, which is the governing body of the Diocese. The church closed in 2014, and has been used by various groups since then, most recently the St John Opportunity Shop. However, bringing the building back to a useable standard would involve very high maintenance costs. The Bishop of Auckland, The Right Reverend Ross Bay, said “letting go of places that hold strong memories for the community always comes with an element of sadness. However, we remain committed to ensuring that there will be an Anglican presence in Waiuku in the future, and this sale will enable an investment in a suitable property in Waiuku to provide for that.” It is anticipated that the site including the church, hall, and the vicarage will go on the market this month.

Significant milestone for Southern Corridor A significant milestone was achieved on the Southern Corridor Improvements project on Sunday 10 February, with the full opening of the new Takanini northbound on-ramp onto the Southern Motorway (SH1).

Chris Hunt, NZ Transport Agency’s Senior Manager Project Delivery, said the new onramp will improve northbound traffic flow, ease congestion and improve safety. “The team has been working hard over the holiday break and January to finish this complex piece of work and regular uses of this stretch of motorway will now experience the benefits of this work with a safer, faster and easier way to get onto the motorway.” It will also ease congestion and queueing on local roads. The upgraded Takanini northbound on-ramp has been delivered in two stages. Last September, traffic shifted onto the new loop ramp, however motorists still had

to merge onto the motorway using a very short merge lane to join northbound traffic. The new second stage now has a new longer merge lane on the motorway, which allows traffic to travel in its own lane for 700 metres before joining the third northbound motorway lane. “The Transport Agency thanks motorists and local communities for their patience and understanding during this construction period.” Initially the two northbound motorway lanes over the Takanini interchange will remain in the same location with a concrete median barrier dividing them while further work is carried out on the shoulder. These northbound lanes will be moved back to their original position by the end of March 2019, allowing work to move into the central median. A third northbound lane through the interchange will open in late 2019.

Hot on the trails The Waiuku Walkways Committee is making great progress in finalising planning for year one trail works. A resource consent has been granted and advanced planning is well underway with work to begin shortly. Stay tuned over the coming weeks for further information.

Pukekohe jam to music in the park

Music in the Parks 2019 came to Pukekohe on February 2, where people gathered at Bledisloe Park to enjoy an afternoon of good music, company and food. Award-winning songwriter Jan Hellriegel (The Jan Hellriegel Experience) entertained, celebrating the launch of her new studio album Sportsman of the Year. Tempist Fujit, a four-piece dynamic rock band who’ve performed alongside prominent New Zealand acts including Midnight Youth, Tahuna Breaks and Dave Dobbyn, also performed. The event, organised by Auckland Council, was one of 24 free outdoor gigs over summer in Auckland.

By Kylie Hall

ACG Strathallan Head Boy, Vincent Withers, stepped up for duty on a recent Friday night, receiving a dunking at the “Dunk Tank” during the school’s Family Fun Night. “The Family Fun Night is a lovely way for our families to meet each other,” said enrolment manager Kat Wymer. “Families from all levels of the school – preschool, primary and college – come along and there’s a great family vibe.” Water balloon fights kept the students and teachers busy, and the “Strong Person Challenge”, which involved teams attempting to drag a car, saw lots of young folk take up the rope.

Trophy for Waiuku pony club

“The Flying Floaties,” from Waiuku Pony Club won the Ballyndene Trophy and Fancy Dress category at the Ballyndene Trophy 2019 competition held at the Tuakau Pony Club on Wednesday 6 February.

By Jess Paton

Team members Jazmine Aicken, Shaylin Holmes, Annalese Hagan, Kendra Hagan, Samantha Jones and Monique Fairhall were surprised when it was announced they had won, but also stoked they had done enough to win. The trophy is awarded to the team with the least amount of faults at the end of the day. Teams compete in a course made up of show jumps, cross country jumps, games and obstacles and then race each other in a bending competition. The top five lowest scores from team members in each team are then added up to find the overall team fault. “Our team had an end score of 18 faults while second place had 54 faults!” said Jazmine. “So we won by a long shot!”

“It was pretty exiting for our small pony club to not only win the best dressed category for the second year in a row but to also take out the overall competition,” said Jazmine. “Throughout the day the team all supported each other so well and were all out on the course ready to help the next person on their round!” Team members also placed individually in their categories. Samantha Jones won her junior category riding her pony Ty Gwyn Glen Mhor, Monique Fairhall came second in her intermediate category riding her horse Diego, Shaylin Holmes came fifth in the senior category riding her pony HR Aries and Kendra Hagan came fourth in the lead rein category riding Fudge. The theme set for dress up this year was sports and “The Flying Floaties” dressed up as swimmers. They decked their horses out in blue sheets to look like water and put goggles on their brow bands and pool noodles on the reins. The team will be back at Ballyndene next year to try and defend their titles!

If you’re looking for fun, fitness and friendship, give walking netball a go. The sport was launched at Waiuku Netball Centre’s summer twilight league, and the club are now introducing walking netball as a warm up to their winter programme. “It’s all about people who enjoy netball and getting together to experience fun, friendship and fitness.” says Noeline Ramsey Waiuku Netball Centre Patroness and Life Member who played in the twilight league this summer. Walking netball is a slower version of the game, and has been designed so that anyone can play it regardless of age or fitness level. Noeline commented that the sport was an opportunity to get back into netball – minus the running. Waiuku Netball Centre is holding a ‘have-a-go’ evening from 6.30pm – 7.30pm on Thursday 21 February at the courts. Everyone is invited to come along.

Sports briefs BEAVER RETURNS TO CHIEFS On Monday 11 February 2019, the Gallagher Chiefs announced the Waiuku-famous Stephen “Beaver” Donald would return to play for the Gallagher Chiefs for the 2019 Investec Super Rugby Season. Joining her is 21 year old Charlee Hodges, who also played for the Thunderbirds last season. “Yeah! We’ve got a cricket pitch!” Waiuku College students, flanked by White Ferns Emily Perkins and Melie Kerr, jump for joy as they celebrate the launch of their new A grade cricket pitch.

It was an early morning start of 4.45am for White Ferns middle order batsman Katie Perkins last Tuesday, as she headed to the country to join the kids of Waiuku College at their sparkling new cricket pitch. I on the other hand, stumbled out of bed at a leisurely 6.30am, reaching the college fields just before seven to take in the action. It’s been two years since Waiuku College have been able to invite other clubs to their school pitch. Their previous pitch (which wasn’t great to be fair), was ripped up to make way for the new roading paths around the college park. The new pitch has been made possible all thanks to ANZ and the dedication of Waiuku College PE Teacher, Jason Hammersley. “Jason has been amazing and has really driven the cricket revival here at Waiuku College,” says Waiuku College Sports Coordinator Judith Coe. Jason found out about ANZ’s community involvement and applied for an ANZ On Your Team grant to help get the kids a new pitch. Quite a bit of dosh, around $15,000 in fact, is required to create an A grade cricket pitch. “We assessed the impact on the community of supporting the college’s application and deemed it to be very worthy. This level of support is at the higher end of the scale for us, but we felt it would really help not just the school, but the wider Waiuku community too,” advises Sarah Rogan, Senior Sponsorship Manager at ANZ. *Hint - ANZ are seeking more applications. White Fern Melie Kerr, who at the age of just 16 was called up into the White Ferns squad, says she remembers feeling inspired when cricket stars came to visit her school as a kid. “It’s awesome to be able to pay it forward and help inspire the next generation of cricket kids.” Melie and Katie were al-

so joined by fellow White Fern Hannah Rowe. “We’re riding a bit of a wave at the moment for women’s cricket, having just come off the back of the T20 series against India with a three-nil win,” stated James Bennett, Communications Manager for the White Ferns. “We know that to continue growing the game, we need it to develop at the grass roots, so it’s great to be here today showing support for local communities and ANZ who are a great sponsor,” adds James. The star power didn’t end there either. Matty McLean from Breakfast TV was onsite at the college too, broadcasting live as he tried his hand at a bit of batting and bowling. He’s not expecting a call up to the Black Caps any time soon... Year 9 student, Hunter Robinson, woke up at 6am to get to the college fields on time. “I really enjoy cricket. I like the competition and getting to meet new people from different towns. It was amazing meeting some of the White Ferns team today - it’s always a dream come true when you meet top sportspeople.” Waiuku College student Kadia Thornton is playing a key role in developing the game within the school. “Kadia totally drove the recent trip the girls team did to Rarotonga,” says Judith. “She came to me and said, ‘We’d really like to do the Rarotonga trip’. I told her all the things she’d need to do to make that happen, and off she went and did it!” marvels Judith. After organising all of the fundraising, Kadia and the team crossed the Pacific and played a five game tournament in Rarotonga. The drizzle started to fall as I departed the college fields, but with a fab new perfect pitch and the promise of a free breakfast, the kids who had woken up early to be involved in the morning’s celebrations were still buzzing.
