The day dawned blue and sunny last Wednesday, and as the temperatures climbed, so did the numbers heading to one of our most popular beaches. ll Fun in the sun, and a splash in the waves were top of mind as the cars piled in, filling the car park and overflowing onto the beach. Several guards from Surf Lifesaving Kariaotahi were rattling the tins for gold coin donations, fundraising for an upcoming competition, whilst the rest of the crew were patrolling the beach. More than 2000 folk from near and far descended on the black sands during the mid week public holiday. “We’ve had more than 300 swimmers at a time in the water today,” noted Jim Coe

while on patrol. Jim’s been watching over beachgoers at Karioitahi for around 40 years now and those are big numbers. Added Jim, “Karioitahi is such a popular beach now.” My partner, daughter and I, had had a fab time body surfing and catching waves on our boogie boards in the late afternoon sunshine, before we called it quits as the tide reached its lowest ebb. We’d noticed that the sucking pull of a full low tide was gaining strength, and after moving into the shallows, decided it was time to hop out. I’d just finished chatting with Jim, when shouts from the sea galvanised the surf rescue team. A group of ten swimmers had been quickly dragged right out the back of the surf and were in serious danger. Continued on page 2

YANA’S

Yarn I have been needing coffee to function this week, and even with a day off in the middle of it, it didn’t really help.I went back to the beach on Wednesday, a group of us took three cars down to Raglan to soak up the sun and the surf... on boogie boards. It was a stunning day, my arms got a shade darker, and the slip, slop, slap and wrap rule was put into action, with mostly no casualties. It was definitely exercise and being in the waves means you get a solid workout. I’m all for it. This weekend I went to a walk in Hunua Regional Park. A friend of mine from the city was doing a fundraiser for Oxfam, and I decided that since I live in the area, love getting out in the fresh air and was keen to support a good cause, that there was no reason not to. While I was writing my yarn, my friend and former flattie was having a baby! Yeah we’re at that life stage now. Her little son was pretty comfy inside so he finally got evicted... I can’t wait to see him. How weird is it that kids are born in 2019? I heard someone say the other week that now there will be no kids from the 90s still at high school. Every one else now is 2000 onwards. Yana

Family members stood screaming in the shallows as the life guards sprinted into the water and cranked up the IRB. Again and again the crew sped out to sea, the bow of the IRB with Jim and fellow lifeguard Justin Hurst onboard, launching vertically over the tops of the crashing waves. Lifeguards Ryan Saddlington, Briar Lowe, Luke Neidhart, Jason Southcombe and Chris Parker were in the water with their tubes, battling through the rip, trying to reach the swimmers and other guards managed communications. As each person was rescued, then dumped safely near the shoreline, family members pointed to where others were still caught in the grips of mother nature’s mighty ocean, and out the team went again. Those rescued staggered onto the black sand, and it was obvious all were exhausted both physically and emotionally from their frightening ordeal. One of those rescued, vomited numerous times on the beach as his body worked to expel the salty seawater he’d taken onboard. Several were taken up to the club house for first aid and received oxygen, with one person fading in and out of alertness, a concern when shock is a possibility. Emergency services were called to carry out additional checks for any signs of serious injury and one person was taken to hospital for observation. The saved swimmers were a group of family and friends from South Auckland, and had visited the beach several times before. Thankfully no one was seriously injured in this near drowning, but as I watched this traumatic scene unfold, I can tell you that the distraught looks on the faces of the family as they waited for their loved ones to be returned safely, showed utter desperation. This day could have had a very different ending. Meanwhile, as the drama was unfolding at Karioitahi, two lifeguards who were tasked to Hamilton’s Gap a short time before the mass rescue, found themselves in the thick of their own drama as three swimmers got into severe distress. All were rescued, but one person required airlifting to hospital by the rescue helicopter. Around thirty people were swimming at Hamilton’s Gap, a location where there are no lifeguards... Waitangi Day 2019, now becomes the date of one of Surf Lifesaving Kariaotahi’s larg-

est mass rescues. Jim told me they’d carried out six rescue assists that day before the large group got into trouble. Rescue assists occur when lifeguards proactively identify and relocate swimmers who have ventured out too far into the deep, or too far outside of the flags, putting themselves in possible danger. “Just before the group got into trouble, we’d identified them as ones to watch and already had one of our team heading out their way. What happened next is what we call a ‘flash rip.’ One minute everything’s fine, the next they’re gone, and it happens so quickly. We had lots of young guards involved in the rescue and for some like Briar and Luke, it was their first ever rescue. I can’t recall the last time we’ve had to rescue that many at once,” says Jim. Head of Lifesaving, Brad Walters, had this to add, “Waitangi Day was a massive reminder of how quickly surf conditions can change, especially on the West Coast. What was planned to be a leisurely day at the beach for these people, definitely wasn’t and it can happen to anyone. It’s a credit to have such a committed bunch of lifeguards who work tirelessly to ensure our beach is safe to swim at.” As the summer holiday season comes to a close, lifeguard hours at Karioitahi now reduce to weekends only, from 11am to 6pm. Recent king tides have created guttering along the expansive black sand beach, meaning conditions, especially at low tide, can be extremely changeable and often dangerous. Some final words from Jim - “If there are no lifeguards on duty, don’t go in the water. Go in when lifeguards are patrolling, but only swim between the flags, and if you’re not a confident swimmer, never go any deeper than your waist. And if in doubt, stay out.” The Surf Lifesaving Kariaotahi crew left the beach at 8pm on Waitangi Day, after having started patrol at 10am. Yes - thank God for the lifeguards.

ture years. “It’s not just about this year,” said Jackson, “but also about starting long term plans and ideas for the next years.” The head students will be ensuring they’re role models for the up and coming students too. “We want to be good role models,” said Jess. Jackson agrees. “We want to have a good influence in the school and create real change.” In the future, the head students

all have career goals to achieve. Jackson wants to study music, with a few language papers added in, while Tremayne wants to take a gap year before heading to Police College. For Jess and Kyla, they’re both keen on Uni and travel, with business and law on the cards. “For now, we’re excited and ready and willing to do the hard work,” they said. “We want Pukekohe High School to be a better place than it was at the start of the year.”

ll Invigorated with vision, excitement and a willingness to see the school band together, the four year 13 students will be working hard to fulfill the school motto of honour, right and duty. Kyla McNaughten, Jess Vandermeer, Jackson Wilcox and Tremayne Moana are this year’s head students. They say their selection was exciting, but many of them weren’t around when the call from Principal Richard Barnett came through. “I was tramping for Duke of Ed, so I climbed up to get reception,” Kyla said. “I was so stoked.” The students are ready to put their plans into action. “We all know each other,” Kyla

said, “So that’s a bonus. We have a great senior leadership team with the prefects and house leaders, and everyone is really excited to lead. Mr Barnett is onto it too.” Tremayne said he was keen to see their growth as individuals. “We get a great opportunity, so it’ll be cool to see us grow and work as a team.” The focus for the year will be getting everyone involved with the range of events, activities and school spirit. “School pride is very important,” Tremayne said. 2019 is also a clean slate for the new leaders. “There are a lot of new teachers this year too, so it’s like a fresh start,” said Jess. “We also hope to do things that aren’t just behind the scenes. “A lot of work goes on behind the scenes, but we want to make a visible change.” They also want to leave a legacy and support system for the fu-

The head students of Onewhero Area School this year want to “be the best they can be, no limits,” reflecting their school motto. Sam McLean and Elliot Lancaster (co head students) and Geneivre Stenklev-Gussey and Florence Webber (co deputy head students) aim to have a positive impact on the school. Sam said ,“This is the only school I’ve been

to in my whole life so I want to make a positive change!” For Florence it’s been a life long goal. “It’s an amazing opportunity and you have to take every opportunity you get in life, so I jumped at the chance,” said Elliot. “We want bring the junior and senior school together,” said Geneivre, and Elliot added they want to make school more fun for students. Florence said they also want to make school assemblies more enjoyable and increase par-

ticipation at sports days. The team believe their leadership roles will help them relate to people. “There will always be conflicts and tough times,” said Elliot. “This will definitely help us relate to people better.” They also believe it’ll help them learn to work together as a team. Sam said, “This isn’t just about being another student, but having a role.” Florence said working collectively as a team and not just individuals will be important and Geneivre said she wants to represent herself through representing the school. “There are around 500 students that look up to us and it’s special having little kids in the school,” said Elliot. “It’s so nice to get kids coming up and saying hi. It’s so special and we want to be good role models. Area Schools are special in this sense.” In the future these students have set goals they want to achieve. Florence is going to study child physcology at university. “I think it’s a real interesting topic and so many kids need someone to talk to,” she said. Sam will study medicine or genetics at Otago. “I did a science academy there in January and that was awesome,” he said. Geneivre will study paramedics and then move into Police and Elliot wants to do an emergency services related career.

An early start to Waitangi Day for the crowd that turned out for the blessing of the pouwhenua. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Waitangi Day, Wednesday 6 February 2019, marked another significant milestone for Ngati Te Ata Waiohua but this time closer to home. A dawn blessing of a carved pouwhenua near the Manukau Heads Lighthouse at the northern tip of the Awhitu Peninsula marked the opening of Te Mahanihani Hikoi Trail. The historic walking trail on Ports of Auckland-owned land will eventually feature pou (carved posts) and kowhatu (stones) telling the stories of Ngati Te Ata as mana whenua of the ancient site. Local carver George Flavell is the driving force behind the trail. Among the crowd at the blessing was Hunua

MP Andrew Bayly who helped George meet up with Ports of Auckland chief executive Tony Gibson to give the idea traction. The area also has a historical significance for Ports of Auckland and the region’s maritime history. The Waitangi Day ceremonies continued later at Awhitu Regional Park with the unveiling of a stone carved with the image of a matata (fernbird). Ngati Te Ata revered the matata as a kaitiaki (guardian) of the area. The carving was completed thanks to the work of George, regional park ranger John Allen and New Zealand hero Willie Apiata VC. Auckland Council, through the Southern Initiative and Franklin Local Board, has backed the hikoi trail as a way of promoting Te Mahanihani’s natural and cultural heritage.

Coastguard called to record number of incidents Coastguard volunteers were kept busy on Waitangi Day, Wednesday 6 February, responding to a record number of incidents in the Northern Region as thousands of boaties took to the water. Coastguard rescue vessels and aircraft were dispatched to 50 incidents on Waitangi Day – the most ever recorded in one day for the Northern Region. In addition, the Coastguard Operations Centre in Auckland received a record 2458 trip reports and requests for assistance from boaties in the Northern Region alone – with a peak of 280 calls taken between 7am and 8am on Waitangi Day morning, resulting in over 1000 trip reports being logged before 10am as people made the most of the fine Waitangi Day weather. “The vast majority of the incidents we attended to, almost 80 per cent, were mechanical in nature with simple break downs and fuel problems upsetting a nice day on the water for some,” said Hemi Manaena, Coastguard Northern Region Duty Officer. “The Coastguard Operations Centre took as many radio calls from boaties in just this single day as we might do over three weeks in winter,” he said. This follows on from the busy Auckland Anniversary Long Weekend recently, in which volunteers assisted at 74 incidents across the region

over the course of the three days (26-28 January). On both public holidays, the majority of incidents occurred in the Hauraki Gulf. Along with mechanical incidents, other search and rescue operations Coastguard volunteers attended to on Waitangi Day included searching for a boatie who was reported overdue over the Waikato Bar, having not closed their bar crossing report, and could not be reached. A Coastguard search aircraft and Counties Power Rescue (Waiuku) were tasked to investigate. Coastguard Operations also tasked Westpac Rescue 2 and NZ Steel Rescue (Waiuku) to search for a person in the water near Hamilton’s Gap, Manukau Heads on Waitangi Day. With the fine weather set to continue, it’s a timely reminder for all boaties to follow the Boating Safety Code. • Life jackets: Take them and wear them. Boats, especially ones under six metres in length, can sink very quickly. • Communications: Take two separate waterproof forms of communication, such as a VHF radio and a cellphone in a waterproof bag. • Marine weather: Check the local marine weather forecast before you set out, and be prepared for weather and sea state changes. • Skipper responsibility: The skipper is responsible for the safety of everyone on board and for the safe operation of the boat.

Grace and Faith Here is a simple explanation for us all, to help us to get our heads around the reality of Grace and Faith. Let us tell a “Parable.” Men will understand this well, you get up late as you overslept from a previous hard day, quickly up showered and rush downstairs for breakfast, which is fortunately already on the table, you eat quickly, grab your lunch box off the counter next to the line-up of the children’s brightly coloured ones, and out the door, gone, a hectic day flies by, and on the way home a traffic accident adds to the endless woes, you roll through the door to “Sub–Arctic” reception. Half pleasantries, but your brain is racing to try to figure out what’s wrong. Your wife then looks at you with feet firmly planted, hands on her hips, and a look on her face that tells you that you’re dead meat and she is about to sentence you.

“What day is it?” So you look at your watch, and think, well it is Thursday, “What is the Date?” Once more the watch tells you that it is 6:14pm, Thursday the 22nd. That blank look upon your face slowly fades from confusion to a scary reality, it is your “Wife’s Birthday” and you have completely forgotten this special and sacred day for the one you treasure above all else. Profuse grovelling and repentance, and you are finally off the hook, your wife has just extended to you “Unconditional Grace,” you certainly do not deserve it, you definitely have not earned it, but it has been graciously extended to you in love.

Then she extends her arms to forgivingly hug you, but you notice in her hand is the big chef’s knife that she has been using to chop up the vegetables for stir-fry for supper, now you must practice “Unconditional Faith.” You must believe that the Grace offered means that you are fully restored and that it is safe to hug and to embrace, in spite of that big knife and the fear that it might shortly come sailing into your exposed back and your last breath is micro-seconds away. “Faith” is much stronger than fear, Grace has just been offered, unconditionally, so Faith conquers fear, the knife is quickly laid on the counter behind you with a distinctive clunk, and two warm forgiving arms enfold you, you hold her right back, encircling her in your arms of gratitude, love and adoration for what you have just received, you did nothing to deserve it, you deserved judgement and punishment, but instead you are receiving compassion and unconditional love, restoration to a relationship that has been foolishly almost lost, but now is fully restored.

Over her head you spy some little ones with faces aglow with wonderment and joy, mummy and daddy are hugging, you both bend your knees, and upon your knees

open two arms and the wee ones fly across the floor and the whole family is restored and harmony and love floods through the house. After a long enduring hug, daddy speaks, “I love all of you so very much,” and strong hugs are the unspoken reply that flows through the family, we all are now soaking in the love of each other and giving back faster than receiving. “Let’s get dinner going,” says daddy, and with squeals of delight all head to the kitchen, and together, Mummy’s Birthday meal is quickly prepared, a simple cup-cake with a candle works wonders, and is enthusiastically blown out, all lost is now restored. Does this help you to understand more fully what Grace and Faith really are?

If you look at, and then re-read Isaiah Chapter 53, you will understand “Grace” so much more deeply, but let us quote the critical verse, Isaiah 53:6 “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.” Revelation 13:8c “the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” Jesus was marked as the Sacrifice for Sin, way back before there ever was such a thing as Sin. So what did God do, he laid our punishment upon his precious innocent son. In our Parable, God is represented as the long suffering, jilted and patient caring Wife, we are the forgetful Husband who deserves severity, so instead of punishing us, God instead turned and slew his only and beloved son, Jesus Christ, who bore our punishment. Just ask Abraham what that felt like, there lay his only son on the sacrificial altar, and as the death blow of the knife came sailing down, heavenly intervention stepped in, just ask Isaac, he alone really understood what salvation cost as he stood in his father’s close embrace watching the ram die in his place, his place. Quote; “Divine grace is the great element of saving power; without it all human effort is unavailing. Are you in Christ? Not if you do not acknowledge yourselves erring, helpless, condemned sinners. Not if you are exalting and glorifying self. If there is any good in you, it is wholly attributable to the mercy of a compassionate Saviour. Your birth, your reputation, your wealth, your talents, your virtues, your piety, your philanthropy, or anything else in you or connected with you, will not form a bond of union between your soul and Christ. Your connection with the church, the manner in which your brethren regard you, will be of no avail unless you believe in Christ. It is not enough to believe about Him; you must believe in Him. You must rely wholly upon His saving grace.” {FLB 94}

Quote; “Now I want you to consider this and put away your distrust, your worrying, your fears. Look away from yourself to Jesus; look away from your family to Jesus. God has spoken to you words of encouragement; grasp them, act upon them, walk by faith, and not by sight. Hebrews 11:1 “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” {DG 145} Grace is unmerited favour with God, Faith is graciously accepting that Heavenly Grace, you need to accept both right now.

Final trading day for St John Op Shop The St John Op Shop will have its final day of trading in the old church building on Saturday 16 Feb from 9.30 am to 2pm. “We would like to thank all our donors, customers, volunteers and visitors for their generosity and hard work over the last two years,” said store manager Lisa Andersen. “As yet we do not have an opening date for our new shop but will ensure we let the community know when we do. We will not be accepting any new donations until the new shop

is open so please if you have clean, quality goods you would like to give us, we ask that you store them until then. We do not do rag bags so all your stained, ripped, smelly and dirty clothing that has paint marks on it can be put into your normal rubbish bag for collection by the council.” Keep an eye on their Facebook page and in Districts Post to follow the journey to the new look, new standard Waiuku St John Op Shop 2019.

Achievement NZ Pukekohe helping kids grow Learners at Achievement NZ, Pukekohe venue (formally Trade and Commerce), are setting themselves up for a successful future thanks to Programme Managers Louisa and Shane Hunter. There are currently ten learners enrolled in the two programmes at Achievement NZ. Young people aged 16 and above can enrol and Louisa said, “We have a rolling intake each Monday, with the majority of learners having little or no formal qualifications from secondary school.” Louisa said, “School hasn’t worked out for these young people for whatever reason. We deliberately focus on foundation skills to ensure they develop life-long learning. At school the end goal is NCEA and for lots of young people that goal is just too far away - here we have short term goals in bursts and immediate successes, that they can be proud of.” The students are at the campus from 8.30am to 4pm Monday to Thursday. On Friday the campus is open so students job search, practice for their learners drivers licence, practice on the barista machine, work one on one with the programme managers or do work experience. “Seeing them grow is why I love this job!” said Louisa. “They come in with their shoulders slumped and quite dejected. Being able to give them

the self-confidence and belief that they’re important, and that education is not a punishment is awesome. They are not children here. They are young adults and treated as such. This is where young people learn what the real world of working and employment can be like.” The students get out in the community doing catering and assisting with community projects as well. Achievement NZ Pukekohe Programmes are fees free to learners. They also provide free transport, a pick up and drop off service

all over the district. “We pick them up from their homes or a nearby location. Parents have trusted us with their greatest investments and we do all we can to ensure their family are well looked after.” Louisa said, “We are always looking for work experience for our learners. If there are businesses out there, the learners are available on a Friday.” If learners are interested in enrolling they can visit 105D&E Manakau Road, Pukekohe, visit the website at: www.achievementnz.co.nz

Businesses and employment on the rise in the Waikato The Waikato District is thriving in terms of employment and business according to the latest Infometric report. Employment has increased 3.5 per cent in the 2018 financial year, higher than a national growth figure of 3 per cent. Unemployment across the Waikato region has remained the lowest in the country at 3.4 per cent in the latest December 2018 quarter compared with the latest na-

tional figure of 4.3 per cent. Waikato District Council’s General Manager Community Growth Clive Morgan says “Waikato district is in the enviable position of having affordable land within an easy commute to Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga which has resulted in a high rate of population growth over the past four years. What’s exciting is to see the increase of new businesses to the district.”

Last minute valentines day ideas Alert! Alert! This Thursday 14 February is Valentine’s Day! You didn’t know? Maybe you’ve been snowed under with work. Perhaps you’ve been getting the kids ready to go back to school. Or maybe, just maybe, you’d plain forgotten! Here are some ideas for you “last minute” folk to save you from the dog box: Share a Picnic– bundle together some favourite goodies, grab a blanket and your Valentine, and whisk them away to a scenic spot for a picnic. They’ll be delighted and so will your taste buds. Write a Letter– often the only mail we receive in the actual letterbox these days, is junk or bills (and of course, your fab local newspaper!). Hand write a letter to your Valentine telling them why you love them lots and pop it in the letterbox for them to discover. This simple, inexpensive act will truly make their day.

Movie Time– if getting to the cinema is too difficult on logistics or your wallet, pick a movie on Netflix etc that you know your Valentine would like to watch. Don’t stop there though, throw some popcorn in the microwave and pick up their favourite ice creams for a midmovie snack. Vouchers - an oldie but a goodie. Buy local if you can, as your Valentine is much more likely to get around to using it. If you can’t get to the store in time to pick one up, just whip one up yourself and then sort the real thing later. Chocolates- often just knowing that you thought about them and took a bit of action is enough to keep you in the good books. There’s no excuse for not being able to buy a box of chocs lads - just be sure it’s her favourite brand (and she hasn’t started a New Year’s diet!) Craft Beer- craft beer is booming in Aotearoa. There are craft breweries popping up all over the show. If your partner’s a fan, pop in to your local beverage store and pick up a couple of the latest and greatest. Tie a ribbon on and you’re sorted! Time - if your partner is the main carer of your delightful offspring, by now they’re probably going slightly insane after having the kids at home for six weeks over the summer holiday! Create them a nice leave pass, for a day, a night, a weekend, whatever you can all manage and let them escape! Date Night– you may be too late to book in for Valentine’s night, so book in for another night and make a card with details of where you’re taking your lovely Valentine. Flowers – there are many ways to pick up a lovely posy. Don’t flog them from someone’s garden (or the cemetery!) Do grab a bunch from a roadside stall, or from your local florist or garden centre, or even from your local supermarket. Think about the colours they like. Take a Walk– go on, be daring! Take your partner’s hand and go for a stroll. Along the sands of one of our many beautiful beaches. Up to your local café for cake and coffee, or maybe the ice cream store for a youthful treat. Go on… hold hands.

Sixty years together

Have you done it yet?

By Jess Paton

Albert and Patsy Brewster celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary recently with a high tea at LaValla in Tuakau on Saturday 2 February, with around fifty guests, family members and friends. The couple were married on ll 31 January 1959 at the Glenbrook War Memorial in Waiuku at the age of 25, after originally meeting at dances. They went on a two week honeymoon holiday driving around the North Island and visiting places like Hamilton, New Plymouth, Whanganui and Wellington. Brothers, Albert and Tom Brewster built a house in Buckland together and Albert and Patsy lived there for 56 years, before moving to Tuakau recently. Patsy said “the best thing that ever happened to us was when the grandkids came along! Being a grandad and be-

ing a gran is the best job in the world.” The couple have watched Buckland being built into what it is today. Their children, Mark and Claire, went to the old Buckland School and then the new school when it was built. Claire said “I admire them for being strong and they have been very supportive.” Well done Albert and Patsy!

Pokeno Overbridge progress Drive slower or pay to fix my windscreen

The new Hitchen Road overpass in Pokeno is well underway and is expected to be opened soon. It will link the new residential area to enable travel north and south, on local roads including Pokeno Road and provide access to State Highway 1. The intention is that heavy commercial traffic use the bridge to access the likes of the Yashili factory and other industrial areas. The main reason for the bridge is for residential traffic/access. The bridge will also cater for pedestrians via a dedicated pathway on it to provide access by foot from the new residential area to Pokeno township.

Two shows to kick the year offFirst up for 2019 OSPA have two shows within days of each other; one is the gig in the garden featuring the Frank Burkitt Band, the other is a fabulous play called Mockingbird, brought to Onewhero by Arts on Tour. As these two shows are so close together, we’re offering a special deal. Tickets for each show are $25, but if you buy tickets to both online at the same time, you’ll get a $5 discount. Sunday 3 March - Gig in the garden – Frank Burkitt is a story teller, songwriter, singer and guitarist, in that order. His rambling anecdotes aim to give the audience more of a connection

with his songs. Although a folk songwriter at his core, American roots music with hints of jazz, blues and swing very much shape Frank’s music. He also recently won the RMNZ Tui Award for Best Folk Album 2018. The band will be playing in Bob and Di’s garden at 610 Kohanga Road, Onewhero. Tickets are $25 each, kids under 16 are free. Bring a picnic or some money for the BBQ, BYO drinks, glasses and something to sit on. Gates open at 5pm, show starts at 6pm. You can check out the band here: www.frankburkitt.co.nz/videos On Wednesday 6 March will be the Mockingbird performance. Mockingbird explores the often-neglected subject of mental health through the use of humour, mask and music. Based on a true story, Le Coq-trained Lisa Brickell brings to life a family of characters from different generations. Mockingbird melts away the stigma around depression and leaves the audience with a far greater understanding of mental health issues. A hopeful and entertaining show, Mockingbird will resonate in your thoughts long after you leave the theatre. Book online at www.ospa.org.nz for either or both these shows. Tickets for Mockingbird are also available (cash sales) from The Goodness Grocer,Pukekohe.

Cracked windscreens are a hassle at the best of times. Sorting out insurance, a time to get the windscreen fixed or replaced and driving in the meantime is a tedious task. But what is more frustrating is when they are caused by others careless driving. I’ve had two cracked windscreens in the space of three months and both times have been in roadwork areas. There is a reason for the 30km/h or 50km/h speed limits in roadworks areas. When people drive too fast in these areas it flicks up gravel or stones which can hit other cars with impact, causing damaged or cracked windscreens. This is common sense, however it’s maybe not so easy to drive to the speed limit in road work areas for some. Whether you’re a truck driver, a car driver or motorbike rider, it’s important to drive to the road rules and respect others vehicles. I would feel terrible if I was driving too fast through a road work area and cracked someone else’s windscreen! Even small nicks caused by rocks or debris can quickly grow. What starts as a simple (and cheap) repair can rapidly turn into a full windscreen replacement. With the influx of road work

What’s on

areas in our district this is an issue that could become very common. AMI Insurance state that “as soon as a chip appears on your windscreen, it will affect the windscreen’s structural integrity. If a chip or crack is larger than 25mm (the size of a $2 coin), your car will fail its WOF.” Windscreens are classified as a safety device. They don’t just keep the wind off our faces and bugs out of our mouths! In a car accident, the windscreen acts as both a structural element of the car (keeping the roof from collapsing) and as a backboard for the passenger side airbag. Novus General manager John Love says chips and cracks attract dirt and grime, which can contaminate the plastic interlayer. “The longer damage is left, the more likely it is to increase in size through physical movement and thermal changes, making it less likely to be repairable.” Maybe we need to bring in a road rule that if people don’t drive to the speed limit in road work areas they can pay to fix others windscreens. Have you had a cracked windscreen from people driving too fast in road work areas? What are your thoughts? Email me jess@districtspost.media with your thoughts!

Powerful show lined up We look back at some highlights of 2018 Right: Chelsea Marriner and Rum the dog showing off to the crowd. Far Right: Michael Jackson the sheep was the winner of the first Sheep Race of the day. Looking back to 2018 we can be excited about what 2019 has to offer. The organisers say this years show will be the best by far. It is the second year that Counties Power, is sponsoring the show. Last year they had their cherry picker out for people to have a go in which was extremely popular. Also our local law enforcement, and volunteer groups were a huge draw card with the youngsters asking questions and trying on gear. Chelsea Marriner’s Wonder Dogs were another crowd pleaser, as were the sheep races, and the axemen competition. There were many equestrian events to watch, and animals on display from sheep, cows and alpacas. Franklin Vintage Machinery was at the top of the hill with lots of machinery on show. It is all happening again this weekend, so bring the family and come down to Pukekohe Showgrounds.

Last year Bruce Dilla from Otara’s Strength Pit took part in the Strong Man competition. Come down and see who will be the 2019 Strong Man champion.

Left: Pukekohe Volunteer Fire Brigade were at the show last year raising funds for the Firefighter Skytower stair challenge which they did in May. They will be there again this year so please support them if you can. They do an amazing job looking out for our community.

Above: The ladies - Kath Michie, Lis Pulman, Maureen Ferris, Ros Kelsey and Vivienne Fitness were all stewards last year for the Above: Last year Aime Derkum handed out Counties Power Home Economy section which once again this year will have a wide balloons which were a huge hit with the kids. It is their second range of vegetables, cakes, artworks and more. Look out for this year as main sponsor so pop in and say hi to their team. years stewards.

Proud to be a sponsor of the 133rd Counties Power Pukekohe Show

Franklin Young Farmers was named the best NZ Young Farmers club in the country earlier this month. It was one of four clubs vying for the soughtafter accolade. “We’re stoked to have won the award. We’ve been working hard to rebuild the club over the last three years,” said vice-chair Annaliese Goettler. Franklin Young Farmers now has an active membership of 20 people who have a diverse range of careers. “I work for a veterinary medicines importer. The key thing is you don’t have to be a farmer to join the club,” she said. Franklin Young Farmers was recognised for its community work and fundraising efforts for local organisations. “We run a really fun, interactive event at the Counties Power Pukekohe Show to educate children about food production,” said Annaliese. “They have to fish, guess the cuts of meat drawn on a sheep, complete a potato and spoon obstacle course and even milk Doris the cow. Doris is made from paper mache and has soft rubber teats. She’s very well-travelled and has even been to the National Agricultural Fieldays,” she laughed. Money raised from last year’s event was donated to the Rural Support Trust. Riding for the Disabled will benefit from this month’s show. Franklin Young Farmers also organised an alumni and industry night in October which was attended by 90 people. The event raised $1700, with $850 being donated to the Rural Support Trust. “It was a fantastic night. It was great that we could bring speakers like Doug Avery and Dr Jacqueline Rowarth to the region,” she said. “Jacqueline spoke about her passion for sci-

The Northern region, which includes Franklin, was named best region at the New Holland National Awards in Christchurch. The awards were part of the AGMARDT NZ Young Farmers Conference held earlier this month.

More money needed for rural connectivity The announcement this week of more funding for rural connectivity is positive but it is just a drop in the required connectivity bucket, says Federated Farmers. The Government’s pledge of an additional $21million towards the creation of “regional digital hubs” in rural areas is good to see, says Feds telecommunications spokesperson Andrew Hoggard. “But the investment really just highlights to us that rural business and communities deserve as much chance as their urban counterparts to flourish.” The regional digital hubs are a good idea, but the focus must remain on getting better connectivity to where people live and work, Andrew says. “A good example of this need, would be the IRD’s shift to payday filing on April 1. If you have decent connectivity then you will be able to comply with this change simply. Staff will be able to log their hours via their smart phones, which can go into your cloud based Payroll software, which will then automatically pay everyone, and send the re-

Ultra Low GI is a feed that offers energy to your horse in a different form than our other feeds. Unlike grain based feeds where starch is the energy source, Ultra Low GI provides energy in the form of ‘Super Fibres’ (highly digestible fibres) and plant oils to give your horse a safe, gentle and reliable source of energy. It is suited for horses that are intolerant to grain or are susceptible to adverse gut fermentation complications from a high starch diet such as laminitis, excitable behavior, tying up and colic. quired data to IRD. “However, without decent connectivity, smart phones are useless along with cloud based software, and then that rural businesses paperwork mountain just got a little higher. “We’re caught between the competing forces of slowly catching rural up to what urban takes for granted and quickly seeing urban shoot further ahead of where rural could reach.” Technological advances are being made all the time and so rural communities must be given access to those tools, he says. “Rural can’t be left to lag behind the rest of the country. The current service provided to rural New Zealand is best politely described as sporadic.”

Liam wins TRS and Grand Prix In a race peppered by Safety Cars, race stoppages and penalties, Liam emerged through it all to take both prizes. Fellow kiwi Marcus Armstrong was given a five second penalty for a move on Liam during the race, but it proved to be academic. After the race, Liam sought out Marcus in the garages to console him after an epic championship that put the Castrol New Zealand Racing Series firmly on the motorsport radar as the best series in the world at this time of year

for up and coming single seater racers. Rivalries aside, it was a touching gesture from one star of the future to another. “It was a weird race and I reckon I fluked the start as I have been having a few issues with those throughout the season, but it all came together and I had already made the move I needed to secure the championship when I heard about Marcus’s penalty on the radio,” Liam said. “I was racing with the championship in mind so to end up winning the Grand Prix is very special. I was a bit emotional on the warm down lap. People were on the radio and I was getting some lovely messages. It’s very special. I have enjoyed racing with Marcus and although there’s a rivalry on track, we’ve become friends during the series

and I can understand how disappointed he was after the race. It’s been a great championship, however, and he’s been a huge part of that.” Liam was the quickest car on the track over the opening laps around a tenth faster per lap than Marcus and with a lead of just over a second, as the top two started to gap the rest of the field. Only eight cars finished the Grand Prix after the most incident-packed race of the 15 race championship. On his facebook page, Liam said, “Words cannot describe how we are feeling at the moment. We have won the Toyota Racing Series and the NZGP! Thanks, so much to everyone who has supported us on our journey to where we are so far!”

Hamish Simpson has been thriving in the 2018/2019 Gixxer Cup. By Yana O’Gorman

The 15 year old from Awhitu has been competing in the competition which sees motorcyclists aged 14 to 21 battle for top spot. “This season has been awesome so far,” he said. “The racing has been very competitive so far but stays lighthearted and friendly in the pits.” The first time Gixxer cup entrant said his favourite track would be Manfeild Park in Feilding. He said while the experience helps, it won’t be long before the round rookies will be evening it out. “Me and all the other new riders have been catching up with

the six that did it last year, by the final round I think we’ll be overtaking and battling the whole way round,” he said. Hamish is currently tied sixth equal with Shane Miller. “My highlight would be Ruapuna (Christchurch). Me and Liam Wealleans were swapping places the whole way around until I passed him on the last corner and crossed the line 0.055 seconds before him! That was the most fun I’ve had on a trip,” Hamish said. His focus now turns to Hampton Downs where he will be racing on Sunday 3 March 2019. He invites anyone who wants to support to come out and watch the round. You can also follow his progress on his social media platforms. Facebook: H-bomb Racing, or Instagram: h.bomb_racing.

Campaign highlights safety first Homeowners are being warned not to endanger the health and safety of family members - or risk invalidating insurance. The plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying industry has launched a new look public awareness campaign. The new campaign is a clever effort from the plumbing gasfitting and drainlaying board (PGDB) that adds personality to regulation for effective engagement with consumer audiences. The campaign is set to be a hit, and ensure homeowners are well informed before partaking in the kiwi spirit of DIY - and especially – be aware when buying a home. Martin Sawyers, PGDB Chief Executive says, “Homeowners need to know the key messages of the campaign to keep themselves safe, mitigate risk and be aware that unauthorised work also affects their insurance policy.” On the D.I.Y front, it’s no secret that Kiwis like to roll up their sleeves, use their ingenuity and get creative. When buying, for most, the icing on the cake is the upgraded bathroom and newly installed kitchen, complete with a gas hob and water filtration system. But there’s a red flag – who installed them? Who plumbed in the water filter, new shower and toilet? Failing to check the licence of who did the work and discovering later that it was carried out illegally, leaves you viable. As the new homeowner, you will be responsible for all problems on your property when it comes to eventually selling it. Martin says, “Almost all aspects of plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying work are restricted and ille-

gal to D.I.Y. Those carrying out this work must hold a NZ Practising Licence. And, for good reasons. Work carried out by unauthorised people can cause injury, illness, disease, damage to property and in the worse case scenarios loss of life. There are big fines associated with illegal work. For example, unauthorised sanitary plumbing work carries a maximum fine of $10,000, and unauthorised gasfitting carries a maximum fine of $50,000.” The PGDB’s campaign will do well in informing homeowners, businesses and DIY’ers about the simple steps they need take to reduce any risk and to act safely and responsibly around plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying work. It’s not child’s play. The NZ Practising Licence is the unique identifier for every Kiwi to look out for when hiring a tradesperson. The number on the licence links to information on the public register (www.pgdb.co.nz). Consumers can quickly and easily look up details and be confident they’re hiring a qualified tradesperson.

Buckland Bowling Club

On the last Wednesday in January, Buckland held a Triples tournament for 24 teams in total from various parts of Counties Manukau and the Waikato. Weather conditions were pretty much perfect except that it was very warm, sufficiently so to ensure that the entire stock of ice creams were sold during the break between games three and four! Despite the depth and quality of a number of teams, the winners came from the host club, Buckland, and in winning four games with 25 ends and 47 points Clive Kendall, John Moat and Adie Moffatt happi-

they both converted for birdies to record twos and John Ruddell also recorded a two on the tenth hole. Dion Takirau and Trish Varnam recorded the longest drives for the day. The next Open Day event is one of the Club’s biggest tournaments for year the Cocky’s Corner Day on Sunday 24 February, 9.30am tee off time.

LIAM WHITER Liam Whiter, another one of Franklin United’s young players has stepped up this season to play for our 1st team. Liam plays Centre, wearing Jersey No. 12. His favourite player is Lionel Mes-

si and says his biggest influence is Michael Scott. His best football memory was winning the Satellite National U19 Final against Forrest Hill. His favourite saying is ‘work hard’.

Franklin United Sponsor Profile ly collected the excellent meat packs. The second placed team also had 4 wins but only 22 ends. This was a composite team from The Waikato, comprising Lyn and Jenny Welch ably supported by Mike Quayle. Teams from Pukekohe filled the next two places with Del and Cindy Henley with Bruce Hudson securing three and half wins/20 ends thereby just edging out Chris Walker, Alan Ferguson and Len Corney who had three and a half wins but only 19 ends! The next tournament, also Triples, is to be held on Wednesday 13 February.
