Locals lined the streets of Waiuku on Saturday 8 December for the 2018 Waiuku NZ Steel Christmas Parade. The theme for the parade was ‘A Clean Green Recycled Christmas,’ and local businesses, schools and emergency services embraced this. With the sun shining, Santa waving out and lollies galore, it was a festive day for all! Pictured above is the Waiuku kindergarten float displaying their creativity in using recyclable materials in the creation of their float. More photographs from the parade on pages 09 - 13.

Christmas is back. Now that we’re nearly there, I can openly share my love for the season. I feel like it’s a great time as you can actually talk to people and wish them a Merry Christmas, without feeling weird for talking to strangers for no reason. I bought some solar lights and hung them up along our fence at the flat, so people walking past can see them twinkle. It’s definitely no Christmas Lights House, but maybe this is how it begins... one light at a time. Someone was out for a sunset walk and commented on them, and it made me stoked. If other people can feel a bit of joy from some coloured lights, then mission accomplished. We also dug up an old Christmas tree which some of the old flatmates left behind, which we decorated over the weekend too. Of course, real Christmas trees are always the best, so this year, we’ll have two. Why not? I can’t remember not having a real Christmas tree, but I do remember one year we almost didn’t have any tree. We’d left it pretty late and all the trees were sold out, so we headed down to the back of my best friend’s farm, grabbed a saw, and cut a branch off a tree. Yes, a branch. It was a very sad looking ‘tree’ but thankfully we’ve pushed the hurt aside and manage to laugh about the time we had a wobbly, wonky branch for Christmas. This could be a nice time to talk about the fact that it’s not about what your tree looks like, but who you share the season with, but really, we wouldn’t have won any pinterest awards for that year! At the end of the day, I can’t even remember what I got for Christmas, but the memory of the branch lives on! I hope your trees are something spectacular this year, and if you want to get in the Christmas spirit, hang some fairylights on your fence. You wont’ regret it. Merry (almost) Christmas. All the best - Yana

This article is for all you ambitious types or anyone who needs a push, has lost everything or has fear. Rise up and go! I contacted Mr Ben Caballero’s office this week to find out what drives him to succeed. “Whether in business, life, love or war success is rarely achieved with out perseverance.” Ben reminds people,“ Never give up too early.” Ben Caballero, in Texas recently claimed a Guinness World Record as the most successful real estate agent ever. $1.9 billion U.S in home sales. 4700 homes sold smashing his 2016 record. That’s an average of 92 homes a week or one and a half sales every business hour. My friend Michael Valdez who is based in New York is the Global Senior Vice President at one of the world’s largest real estate conglomerates. I’ve always admired Michael’s humble vision and success, and he specifically wanted to give his thoughts especially for you at Districts Post. Michael left home at 17 and never looked back. His father had political aspirations in Cuba. “If you don’t have a safety net it builds incredible resilience. I look for another horizon I can achieve and it keeps me focused.” Fellow Cuban and former CEO of Coca-

Last week we spoke about planning your Christmas outings and having a plan about being safe. So this week it’s about going away for your holiday. Over the next month or so, a great majority of people will head away for a holiday somewhere. You should start planning now about securing your house while you are away. Have a look around your yard, put away anything that could be used as a tool or instrument to force entry to your house, garage or garden shed. Make sure all your locks are secure and sturdy. Arrange someone to keep an eye on your house, someone who can actually come and have a look around the property, clear the mail, draw the curtains at night, put some lights on, that sort of thing. It is good to let your neighbours know you’re away and if someone is checking on the property. Tell them who it is and what sort of vehicle they have so they will know the house is being checked and not burgled. Tell the neighbours if you see any strange vehicles or persons at your house to ring 111. We would rather check things out than a burglary be commit-

ted. If you have an alarm make sure you activate it when you go away, surprising how many homes have alarms but they are not used. Shut, lock, close all the doors and windows and check that it has been done before you go away. Leave some contact details with someone so that if required you can be contacted. It is about making your property safe while you are away, so take some time leading up till you go away to do the above. Lastly on Friday night Waiuku was awash with Police, and there was great number of locals that would have been stopped at a checkpoint somewhere. I know the local Waiuku staff alone breath tested just under 200 drivers and what was really pleasing was that they all passed. It was good to see a number of people were being sober drivers as well. Remember it is not the Police that make the roads safe, it is you the drivers. The Police only do checks to make sure everyone’s abiding by the rules and if the rules aren’t being followed we take action. So it was good to see that result. Keep it up. Cheers Woody

Valley School’s travelwise team were out giving away coffee cards to parents and caregivers on Tuesday 4 December.

The 2019 Firefighters Calendar has taken on a new look for the year, featuring the ever popular firefighters alongside Child Cancer ambassadors. According to Firefighter Tony “Scottie” Scott the new look calendar fits with the new direction of Fire and Emergency. “We’ve had a great time pulling this calendar together. The kids have added another dimension to it and our people were really excited to evolve what has been a favourite calendar for many people. “Each month tells a story; not only the photos which are definitely hero shots but the kids and their individual stories really resonate. It’s great to be keeping it real,” says Scottie. The calendar was first produced in 1990, and has raised over $1million for Child Cancer Foundation. The calendar costs $15 with up to $3 from every calendar going to Child Cancer Foundation. To buy a calendar go to: www.childcancer.org.nz

The travelwise team (who we met in last week’s paper) are encouraging people to walk to school. “You can walk to school with your kids,” said Alex. The team of seven year six students have been instrumental in helping this year. “They give it their all, and they’re passionate about safety and their school,” said teacher Jenny Davis. Helped out by Auckland Transport’s Kurt Maxwell, the team have implemented new programmes, including the Park n Walk. Parents are encouraged to drop their kids 400m away from the school and walk with them, or they can ride their bikes,

or scooter to school as well. “We want to reduce the stress of parents during and to school,” Alex said. If we park and walk, it makes sure the kids are safe,” said Abbie. While working with the Police, the team also got to use the radar to see the speeds of cars travelling past their school in the morning. “The highest speed we saw was 56km/h,” Alex said. The slowest was about 19km/h. As part of the team, the students get to reward others for walking to school, and last week, also handed out coffee cards to parents utilising the park n walk programme, by parking at Colin Lawrie fields. “There’s lots of traffic around school time, and cars can’t find parks. It’s hard for kids to walk

and we could get hurt,” said Alex. He said this is why it’s important to park away from the school and walk, with the aim of parking 400m away from the school. “Less speed, less harm,” said Abbie. Teacher Jenny Davis said it’s a great way to teach kids the road rules. Most of the travelwise team walk, scoot or ride to school, and say even if it’s raining, it’s possible. “ If it’s raining, you can use an umbrella and jacket,” Courtney said. Jenny said the travelwise programme has been invaluable to the school. “It’s all about safe practices around Valley School. We are tucked away, so road safety is very important for our students.”

A new defibrillator is in town, thanks to the Waiuku Business and Development Association and Waiuku Rotary. The proud announcement came last week, Friday 7 December as it was installed outside Sunset Surf ‘n Turf. Town Manager Sharlene Druyven said it was huge for the town. “It is wonderful to have this potentially life-saving technology in our town centre, and it is really easy to use. If you think someone is in cardiac arrest all you need to do is follow the steps on the sign at the AED unit by calling 111 and give them your location.” The ZOLL Automated External Defibrillator is in the town centre and is accessible to anyone who might need it, 24 hours a day. It was all made possible thanks to the finan-

cial support of Waiuku Rotary, who covered half of the cost, and the Franklin Local Board’s recent Waiuku Community Safety and Placemaking grant. In the new year the suppliers of the defibrillator, AED NZ will be holding a free training session for Waiuku businesses and their staff who would like to learn how to use the device. This will be in late January, early February. The WB&DA would like to thank the Franklin Local Board, Coral Timmins from Auckland Council and Waiuku Rotary for their contribution to this project. “A big thank you also to Julie Powell from ‘Sunset Surf n Turf’ who has allowed us to install it on her building and to ‘Osborne Realty’ who surrendered their advertising space to allow for the AED device,” Sharlene said.

Rain breaks record Tuesday 4 December 2018 was a record breaking day for Auckland. A record breaking hour in fact, with the wettest December hour between 8am and 9am, with a total of 31.4mm of rainfall. It was also the second wettest summer hour on record, surpassed only by 8 January 1975, which was recorded at the weather station in Mangere, where hourly records began in 1965. (Info: NIWA)

Stumped Here is an interesting problem that is not so common these days, “Stumped.” In the very “Old Days” roads were tracks through the forests and undergrowth, or you just forged your own way, but every now and then, you got “Stumped.” There stuck against your axel barring your way, was an old tree stump that a previous person had cut down so that they could pass that way, they chopped down the offending tree, then drove their cart or waggon over it, but your lovely low slung cart or trailer is now stuck. If you were very lucky, and it was old and rotten, a little HorsePower and you were on your way, at worst, you had to somehow back up, out with the axe, lower its height, and continue to the next obstacle. Off Road 4WD vehicle often face this problem, stumps are not so bad, but a large bolder wedged underneath are very bad.

Are you “Stumped?” Here is a verse that addresses something that we oft ignore, and often when we deal to a sin or a failing in our lives, we chop it down to remove it, this tree of sinful action, then turn around and find it overpowering us once again from behind. Job 14:7-9 “For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground; [Yet] through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.” Warning; if you ever cut down a corrupted sinful tree out from your life, you can be so sure that when you go on your way, Satan will sneak up and carefully water that stump, and it may be ancient and very dry, yet it will immediately bud and bring forth branches, it will come back bigger than ever before to harass you.

Romans 11:16 “For if the firstfruit [be] holy, the lump [is] also [holy]: and if the root [be] holy, so [are] the branches.” Psalm 52:5 “God shall likewise destroy thee for ever, he shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of [thy] dwelling place, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah.” Malachi 4:1 “For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.” Satan is the “Root” and his children are “the Branches.” We need to be so careful with bad habits or desire, to completely remove them, a light prune, or to chop it off at ground level, will never suffice, we then must dig it out, roots and all. Ephesians 3:17-19 “That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with

all saints what [is] the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God.” Here we have good trees in our garden, being rooted and grounded in love, they can withstand pretty much anything Evil can throw at them, but back to Job, if the worst happens, and all you have left from a disaster sweeping through, you still have a “Stump” and the sweet rain of the “Love of God,” will soon have these trees of “Holiness” sprouting and blossoming and fruiting the Fruit of the Spirit once more.

In the Far North of Australia, there grows the Baobab Tree, now the ancients tell the story that it was such a beautiful tree, far more beautiful than any other trees in the forest, that after much complaining about the Baobab Tree, they finally ripped it from the earth, tipped in upside down, and planted it back into the ground. When they looked at the results of their actions, the Baobab Tree there with its roots waving skywards, it still was a beautiful tree. All the other trees of the forest saw how beautiful the Baobab Tree still was so they ignored it and left it, so that is why it grows out there away from other trees. If life seems to upend you, be a Baobab Tree, be absolutely beautiful and continue to grow.

Here is a story about Jesus Christ, Isaiah 53:1-2 “Who hath believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, [there is] no beauty that we should desire him.”

You may feel like a Baobab Tree, or a dry stump in a dry land, just totally useless, not that pretty, but to God you are absolutely, drop dead gorgeous. Remember that Jesus Christ grew up as a tender plant from a very dry stump in a very dry land, sort of like a Baobab Tree, no matter how much your past has tried to destroy and to obliterate you, your stump can once more blossom and grow abundantly, your beauty is in your “Growth,” so, “But grow in grace, and [in] the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him [be] glory both now and for ever. Amen.” 2 Peter 3:18. If you think you’ve blown God’s plan for your life, rest in this. You my beautiful friend, are not that powerful.

Advent Boxes bring Christmas cheer to Waiuku Advent boxes will again make an appearance in Waiuku shops this December. This is the fifth year St Andrew’s Centre has liaised with local retailers to introduce Christmas cheer into window displays. The brainchild of Waiuku resident Gaylyn Wills, the Advent boxes have a theme each year. This year it is Christmas symbols. Each box displays a handmade scene using figurines, artwork and other materials put together by St Andrews volunteers. The boxes are opened progressively over the 12 days prior to Christmas. Each day a town crier announces the openings, reminding people about which shop to visit. At midday a box is opened and its contents are revealed. A few carols follow the openings, to help onlookers get in the Christmas mood. “I got the idea when I was reading a book about something that was happening in England,” said Gaylyn. “They were using little changing sheds at the beach. I thought we could adapt that idea.” Many of the shops participating this year have been involved from the start. Some have commented that it is a pleasant way to include carols, since many shops no longer play recorded Christmas music. But while retailers quickly A Smart Water pilot in early childhood centres was so successful it’s been run again. The 20 minute Smart Water show hosted by Chris Lam Sam (a former Funky Monkey) is all about water – what we use it for, the rain cycle, water songs and how to save water. The show, aimed at three to five year olds, took place at Suits & Gumboots in Pokeno, and Tuakau Learning Centre on Monday 3 December. Smart Water Coordinator Michelle Templeton said the show aims to provide children a greater understanding of how water gets from source to tap and encourage them not to waste it. “There are more than 300 early childhood centres in the sub-region and water play is a key part of the curriculum particularly in the summer time. Encouraging childcare centres to be mindful of their water use without compromising children’s play and learning experience could have huge

They wouldn’t stop and sing with us because they thought it was a gimmick to make them spend money or go to church. But they are getting the idea now that it is nothing to do with that. It’s just celebrating Christmas. I see it as a way to tell

the Christmas story in a modern way. What people do with the story is up to them,” she said. “The Advent boxes are fun to do. We’ve got a good creative team that love doing them and this our way of saying ‘Happy Christmas, Waiuku.’” The first box in this year’s series will be opened at midday on Thursday 13 December at St Andrew’s Op Shop in Waiuku.

water-saving potential.” The centres that participated really enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot about water, why it is precious and why we should look after it. Each child was given a pack including a resource booklet and a shower timer.

College kids contribute to environment

Kylie Hall kylie@districtspost.media

Getting stuck into the dirty work needed to help support our environment didn’t turn off the keen kids from Waiuku College. During their recent Environmental Camp, the year 10 students trekked slices of the Awhitu Peninsula coastline, collecting and clearing garbage that careless beach users had left behind. They hunted down lurking litter and terrible plastics at Irwin’s Gap, Cochrane’s Gap and Hamilton’s Gap. “The students collected the rubbish, then hauled it back up the long hill to base camp for sorting,” said an impressed Anna McNaughton from Beachcare Awhitu. Creative talents were given a chance to shine also, with students designing additional sign boards to convey environmental messages for this summer’s eager beachgoers. Hammers got a workout too, as the students nailed together rodent traps to help protect native wildlife from pesky predators. We love seeing the youth of our communi-

ty taking care of their environment. Today’s positive actions will impact what our world feels and looks like in the future - their future. Well done kids!

MG Beans caffeine hit for Tuakau MG Beans, a new coffee kart, has come to Tuakau and owner Marcel Gallichan is eager to get involved with the community.

Jess Paton

The kart opened to the public on Saturday 1 December at the Tuakau Christmas Parade. “This has been a ten year dream of mine!” said Marcel. “My business mentor asked if he could buy this for me to get it started, so it’s a gift really!” Marcel said he loves the culture around coffee and he loves the social aspect. “I love the art of coffee! I’m not necessarily good at the art on the top of the coffee but with takeaway cups that doesn’t matter so much!” laughed Marcel. Marcel said “it’s a great opportunity from a Christian point of view to reach into the community and be involved and support the community.” He said it’s not about the money, but blessing the people. “Money is not the primary focus!” A new deck has been built around the kart with chairs for

people to relax on and eventually the whole area will be roofed. “We are going to get a big mural of the Tuakau Bridge on the wall on the side of the church building which will be really cool!” said Marcel. “Shout out to Jay from Wrapped Industries too for the graphics on the kart! “I want the atmosphere to be funky, relaxed and chilled out. I want people to just come and sit and chat and have a rest, even if they don’t buy a coffee!” Marcel has been involved with the Tuakau Vi-

sion Church for about five months now and they do a free sausage sizzle each Friday night. “I started bringing my speaker down for ambiance, then we got a patio burner and then I thought why not bring my own coffee machine from home and it’s just kept going from there! So from 5 to 8 pm on a Friday night there’s free coffees from the kart!” MG Beans is open everyday of the week. On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 am to 1 pm and on Wednesday and Fridays 5:30 am to 5 pm.

Bracu won their first Beef and Lamb Excellence Award in 2016. “Today, we’re just as passionate about executing the perfect beef and lamb dishes. We are delighted to receive this award three years in a row,” they said. Awards are nothing new to the restaurant, having recently also won the 1 Hat at the 2018 Cuisine Good Food Awards. Their food is something to be desired, with a “firm favourite” being the the Middle-Eastern Style Lamb with Baba Ghanoush, Hummus, Tabbouleh and Lemon Yoghurt. “Thanks to talented head chef Logan Clark, Bracu’s menu is constantly evolving to keep it new and exciting but diners will always find a selection of carefully created and perfectly plated Beef and Lamb dishes.” Head Chef Logan runs a talented team creating beef and lamb dishes ignite the senses and captivate the palate. One of Logan’s personal favourites is the Savannah Beef Eye Fillet with Celeriac, Bacon, Mushroom, Carrot

and Potato. The awards was no easy feat though, with judges visiting the restaurants anonymously during a three month period. “Each dish is judged on how well thought out they are, from the colours on the plate, flavour, texture and seasoning, to presentation and creativity,” they said. “The key is constancy of excellence.” The Excellence Awards are the longest running culinary award in New Zealand, in their 23rd year. The awards recognise the skill, expertise and talent of New Zealand’s greatest chefs and together with the iconic gold plate, signpost to consumers where they can try the pinnacle of beef and lamb. They boast that dining at Bracu is an experience. “Bracu is situated at the heart of the Simunovich Olive Estate. Offering elegant and contemporary fine dining in a truly exceptional setting. Logan and his talented team showcase an ‘estate to plate’ philosophy, with seasonal offerings from the Estate’s own gardens and passionate local producers.” For more info on the Beef and Lamb awards go to: nzexcellenceawards.co.nz and for more on Bracu, go to: www.bracu.co.nz

They had two goals. 1) Win a game! 2) Make it out of their group. Within two games, they’d smashed those goals and were well on their way to creating one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup. And best of all, one of our own was right there in the thick of it, kicking it with the best! Waiuku College student Britney Cunningham-Lee finished her school year taking out the Brett Donald trophy for Supreme Sporting Excellence at the college prizegiving. A fantastic award, but nothing compared with the elation of reaching the semi-final on the football world stage. “ I was nervous, it was us versing Spain, and Spain has very talented players. Once on the field though, the nerves disappeared and I just concentrated on making an impact and carrying out my roles on the field,” says Britney. Spain went on to take out the title. Often, successful sportspeople will have their pre-game routines and rituals to step through before they feel ready to tackle the opposition. What about Britney then? gy ‘The Auckland Approach to Community Sport’. “This annual forum is a unique opportunity for Auckland’s sport and recreation sector leaders to come together to share ideas and insights and discuss ways to support and grow their respective communities,” said Dr Sandley. “The diversity of Auckland as a city was reflective of the group who attended and underpins our bespoke community sport strategy The Auckland Approach to Community Sport.” Developed specifically for Auckland based on insights, this strategy sees the alignment and implementation of regional and deliv-

ery plans with a focus on targeted groups to ensure relevance, access and equity. Dr Sandley said, “A key outtake from this forum was that, as a sector, we must continue to use research and our combined reach and expertise to co-create a world-class sport system in Tamaki Makaurau, community by community.” Featuring the hashtag #sportmatters, Aktive tweeted messages communicated by speakers throughout the event. These included comments from Councillor Penny Hulse who said, ‘Sport is no longer the domain of elite sport - it is who we are as a city’; alongside ‘It’s about quality experiences - your supply must meet the new demand’ from Peter Miskimmin. Dr Sandley added, “We are encouraged by the growing attendance and valuable connections at this sector event. It is imperative that we continue to engage with each other and our communities and share examples to boost our collective knowledge and impact. Aktive is proud to help facilitate these connections and we look forward to building on this with further opportunities to bring the sector together.”

Tuakau’s Jono Buxeda was in Brazil recently, taking on the best of the best in the Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals. The competition brings in the best drivers from countries all over the world, and was held from 26 November to 1 December 2018. Around 360 drivers from nearly 60 countries took part in this year’s finals. Jono finished an event-best

third in his second qualifying heat in the Rotax DD2 class, and seventh in his third, ending up back in P20 in his Pre-Final and on grid P24 for the Final. A strong start and first half of the Final saw him up to P13 by lap 13, though that was when his luck ran out and a three-kart incident on lap 16 saw him out of the race (though officially classified 31st) with just four laps to go.

The NZ Transport Agency are advising motorists that they are changing the lane layout over the Pahurehure Inlet on the Southern Motorway (SH1), between Takinini and Papakura. Transport Agency Senior Manager Project Delivery, Chris Hunt said the lane changes began on Monday, 10 December, and will be rolled out in stages over three nights. All four lanes will be moved to the western side of the motorway, with the two northbound lanes moved first. The southbound lanes will be moved on Wednesday night. Once the lanes switch is completed there will be two lanes of traffic in both directions, as there are now. “The old Pahurehure Bridge is being replaced in stages and this lane switch is a significant step. We are moving traffic on to a new section of bridge so we can demolish and replace the old southbound structure,” Chris said.

“The Southern Motorway is one of the busiest in Auckland and it’s vital that we keep traffic flowing freely and safely in the narrow corridor around the construction site,” he said. Drivers are encouraged to drive with caution through the new lanes, keep to the 80km/h speed limit, avoid sudden lane changes and take extra care to ensure the safety of workers and motorists. As part of the Southern Corridor Improvements project, the Transport Agency is replacing the old four lane bridge over the Pahurehure Stream with a new bridge structure that will carry three lanes of traffic in both directions, plus a shared walking and cycling path. The new lane layout will be in place for about nine months, before changing to its final configuration in mid-late 2019. The Transport Agency thanks motorists for their patience and understanding as this essential work is carried out.

It was motorsport central at Pukekohe Park on 8 and 9 December 2018. Auckland’s Chelsea Herbert started race one in the BNT class, with a goal to get into pole position. However, after being shunted from the back while heading into turn two, she was sent off the track, through the grass and ended up inside ‘sausage kerb’ at turn four. Chelsea managed to get back up and running, but had to go into the puts for a quick car check. “I finished up a lap down due to being in the pits which was unfortunate,” she said. The weekend wasn’t all lost though, she finished with two fifths in her class on Sunday. “I was very happy to have the car over the finish line in all three races this weekend,” she said. Chelsea will now be pushing to get fast so she can get ahead to the top four positions. Round three is at Highlands Park in Cromwell 12-13 January 2019.

ll I started watching The Bachelor Australia last week. The flatties and I got together, put on the tv and enjoyed a dose of not so real ‘reality’. We laughed at the irony of us sitting slumped in the lounge wearing track pants, hoodies and pyjamas while commenting on the girls’ hair, make up, dresses and personalities they portrayed. I can’t judge them on their make up choices when I can’t even do my own make up most of the time. However there is an entertainment factor to these reality shows. 25 women, one man. Poor fella. This year I watched it for the pure entertainment factor of Nick Cummins- the honey badger. I recognise him from before, his flowing blonde curls flying down the rugby field in years gone by. While getting warped into the realm of the show, I do have to remind myself that it is just a show and they really do want to get us talking. The characters you love to hate, with producing, we’re only seeing a snippet of what really went on, and what they want us to see. You’ll have your outspoken, your shy and the ones who get no airtime because they’re out pretty quickly. I already have my faves and know the ones set out to be the villains. Of course, it’s no surprise when each week they get a rose because they add drama to the show. Speaking of shows, I met a kiwi celebrity last week. I was lucky enough to go on a hot lap with driving legend Greg Murphy. More on that in next week’s paper. I honestly had the time of my life, and it’s moments like that where I’m so thankful to have the job I have! I enjoy making the most of every opportunity—especially when it pays off like this one did. Next time we’ll put Jess in the hot seat!

Local named Food security still a focus for Pukekohe vice president of HortNZ board In August, Deloitte released a report on the ‘New Zealand food story’, with a focus on Pukekohe as a growing hub.

It has been a whirlwind year for Pukekohe’s Bernadine Guilleux. ll She was recently announced as the Vice President for the Horticulture New Zealand board, a role which will being on 1 January 2019. Earlier this year, Bernadine was elected to the board of directors, claiming one of two positions. Bernadine Guilleux is a grower representative on the Horticulture New Zealand board. She has a strong marketing background, in New Zealand and Europe, and will be using these skills to help tell New Zealand’s unique horticulture story to the wider public. She is a member of the Balle family and grew up in the vegetable growing area of Pukekohe. The Horticulture New Zealand board elected kiwifruit and avocado grower Barry O’Neil as its new President and Chairman. Mr O’Neil replaces Julian Raine, who has been President and Chairman for six years and who has made a significant contribution to horticulture for New Zealand. Mr Raine has stood down to pursue other business interests. “These are exciting times for horticulture as the world catches on to our vision of: healthy food for all forever,” Barry says. “While I have a strong background in governance, government and as a grower, I am excited about working with growers to find a better future - for both us and our grandchildren.”

Andrew Gibbs from Deloitte said horticulture is one of the success stories of New Zealand’s primary industries. In 2017, the industry generated $5.68 billion in value. Export revenue has grown nearly 50 per cent in five years, illustrating the trust the world places in New Zealand-grown food, and the country’s ability to meet that demand. The report also focused on the constraints facing the horticulture industry as well as some of the local growers. This week we highlight the Hari family who began cropping in the Pukekohe area in the late 1930s, mainly potatoes, beetroot and other root crops. RC Hari was also a founding member of the Pukekohe Indian Hockey Club. 73 years later, RC Hari’s grandson, Kiran Hari, is following in his fore-

bear’s footsteps in more ways than one. He’s heavily involved in hockey at the Pukekohe Indian Sports Club, as well as being one of four directors at the family business – along with his father and uncle, and his cousin, Pravin. With the family’s roots in the area going back nearly 100 years, the cousins feel deeply about the contribution horticulture makes to Pukekohe’s communities. But, with pressure for living space seeing developments spread from Auckland proper into the area, they worry the industry – and the jobs it creates – will suffer.

“A National Policy Statement to protect elite soils and productive land would be good,” says Pravin Hari. “There needs to be a rural zone, as farming on land very close to town can be difficult for both growers and their neighbours.” The cousins don’t want to sell their land. “We believe there is long-term gain from being part of this industry. We just want it to be sustainable, in terms of natural, physical and human assets, so these factors can be rolled together and businesses can run at a profit. “Once you lose a grower, it can be very hard to get them back.”

2019 Dairy Awards closed with increased entries Entries have closed for the 2019 New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards, and a total of 393 entries were received this year, an increase of 29 from last year. The Auckland to Hauraki region received 36 entries and the Waikato region received 34 entries. Nationally, 106 entries were received in the Share Farmer category, 166 entered the Dairy Manager category and 121 entered Dairy Trainee of the Year. “It’s a great result and we are really thrilled with the response,” said Chris Keeping, NZDIA General Manager. “Changing the visa entry criteria has also seen an increase overall in entry numbers in the Dairy Manager and Dairy Trainee categories.” “The numbers ensure strong categories will run in each of our 11 regions and that is great for the entrants, for the categories and for us as organisers of the Awards.” Judging will begin in the new year for the 11 regional categories, with winners announced at dinners throughout the country in March next year.

He wants to make it easier for people to transport their water. “Women and children carry the containers on their heads for several kilometres. They often do multiple trips in a day,” he said. Time spent walking means other things like education can’t be maintained. The idea first came to Ed, a mechanical engineer, when he was doing a motorbike trip through Borneo, South East Asia. The KoruCarts concept is to assist the human load carriers of the world, to escape from conditions of drudgery, by providing them with suitable handcarts. Handcarts have been an essential element of human progress

and development for centuries, saving time and energy, and improving the lives of individuals, families and communities, he said. Ed has been working on the project for seven years, “I’ve talked to people all over the world,” he said. However, Ed’s work has ground to a halt. “I’m 80 next year,” he said. “I’ve tried speaking to multiple people about the idea, but it’s falling on deaf ears, or those unable to do anything,” he said. The hand cart made of steel, can carry two containers of water. “It has been trial and error with carts made to conquer the terrain,” he said. However, he is still determined to put his plan into action. Anyone who would like to help Ed can contact him on: edaustin38@gmail.com

Have your say.... It’s time to have our say on Auckland Council’s proposed Freedom Camping in Vehicles Bylaw. The draft bylaw defines the number of sites across Auckland where freedom camping is allowed. A bylaw under the Freedom Camping Act will also mean enforcement officers can issue a $200 infringement fine to anyone who breaches a prohibition or restriction. Consultation is open until Monday 18 February 2019 so head along to the Auckland Council website and have your say. There will be a drop-in session in Pukekohe on Saturday 9 February, 10am-12pm at the Pukekohe Town Hall, Massey Avenue for more information.

Panuku will create development opportunities and board chair Angela Fulljames says, with the area’s population forecast to increase to 106,800 by 2033, being proactive is crucial. “Housing development at Special Housing Areas in Paerata, Drury, Clarks and Glenbrook beaches means that growth is fast approaching. We need to be proactive to meet the needs that will come with that,”Angela said. “We’ll advocate for better transport connections to ease the congestion we have, and which will increase with growth. Improvements have been made to public transport, including a new bus network and the train station, but there is still much to be done. Having the expertise and support of Panuku will be critical to shaping the way Pukekohe can provide economic opportunities to attract more investment into job creation.” Local board chair Angela said the future must be about improving quality of life and enhancing the area’s rural heart character,

and the value Panuku can add in that space shouldn’t be underestimated. “Panuku has undertaken developments across wider Auckland that have been transformational - bringing people, business opportunity and vibrancy to areas that were crying out for regeneration. We have the benefit of good bones to work with already.” Deputy mayor Bill Cashmore said having Pukekohe as an Unlock development centre is great news. “It brings a greater focus on partnering with the private sector and that will maximize the opportunities and deliver a great community in which to live and operate,” he said. Board member Alan Cole represents the board on the Pukekohe Business Association. He said Pukekohe is already a great place to do business, but rapid growth will bring challenges, and the board needs to be able to respond to that. “A strong local economy is vital because it is the cornerstone of employment, and our quality of life depends on jobs. Our economic development plan is a map for growing the local economy and having Panuku on board can only add expertise and freshthinking as we develop local business alongside our business associations.”

Auckland Council has green-lit Pukekohe for a regeneration programme being led by the city’s redevelopment agency Panuku - news welcomed by Franklin Local Board and the town’s business association.
