Traffic Conditions Improved Along Great Western Highway

Drivers will benefit from better traffic flow and safer conditions along the Great Western Highway in Emu Plains, with an upgrade to the road now complete.

The upgrade included the construction of a new four-way intersection at the Great Western Highway and River Road, installation of new traffic lights, a dedicated left-hand turn lane from the highway into River Road, dedicated left and right-hand turn lanes into Lamrock Street, road surfacing, new line marking, and drainage improvements.

Lamrock Street has also been widened and a dedicated lefthand turn lane constructed as part of the project.

Penrith Mayor Todd Carney said the work complemented the upgrade to River Road which was completed last year.

“These road changes will help to ease traffic congestion in the area by improving traffic flow along the Great Western Highway for drivers coming in and out of Emu Plains,” Cr Carney said.

“It will also make it much easier for residents and visitors who want to enjoy Regatta Park and the Nepean River.”

“Thank you to the NSW and Australian Governments, and the community for their support while this much-needed upgrade was underway.”

This milestone follows the completion of stage one of the Regatta Park project last year, which included an adventure playspace, multi-use lawn space, picnic and BBQ areas, new pathways to the foreshore, over-water viewing platforms, kayak launch areas, the initial section of the 90-space car park, and the River Road realignment.

The Regatta Park project is jointly funded with $19.2 million from Council and $15 million from the Australian and New South Wales governments as part of the Western Parkland City Liveability Program which is a key commitment in the Western Sydney City Deal.

Federal Member for Lindsay Melissa McIntosh said it was pleasing to see this project come to fruition for our community to enjoy, from the park space to better traffic flow.

“I want to thank our community for their patience during construction,” McIntosh said.

Karen McKeown MP for Penrith said the completion of this intersection will alleviate the traffic issues that can back up into Penrith.

“It is welcomed by all those commuters that travel the Great Western Highway,” McKeown said.

Stage two of the Regatta Park project is expected to be open in mid-2024.

Local Little A’s Athletes with Big Hearts Celebrate

Emu Plains Little Athletics Club (EPLAC) have wrapped up another fantastic year, celebrating a successful 2023/24 season.

This year, EPLAC boasted a total of 407 athletes, including 85 in Tiny Tots, and 322 in various age groups.

“One of the club's standout moments was the strong representation at zone, region, and state carnivals,” said Club President, Paul Dukes. “Many of our athletes achieved personal bests, setting new records and showcasing their dedication and talent.”

Paul, who assumed the role of President this season, expressed his gratitude for being part of such a vibrant and storied club. The local club was founded in 1979/80 at Hunter Fields, and later moved to Leonay Oval in 1987, when they officially joined the Little Athletics NSW fraternity. EPLAC has a rich history of excellence, thanks to its dedicated members, both past and present.

“Like any club, we are only as good as our volunteers, and we have an exceptionally strong committee that work tirelessly behind the scenes to make the club the success it is,” Paul stated.

The club's presentations were recently held at Nepean High School on Sunday 7th April, providing a fun-filled day for athletes and families. Activities included jumping castles, face painting, a BBQ, and, of course, the presentation of numerous trophies.

Paul extended his gratitude to the parents who supported and volunteered throughout the year, as well as the club's sponsors, including Sydney Helicopters, Penrith Toyota, Western Sydney Kitchens, and McDonald's Emu Plains.

“But most importantly, I want to thank the athletes that competed,” he explained. “We hope that each one of you loved it, and we can’t wait to see you all next season.”

For those interested in joining EPLAC for the 2024/25 season, registrations will open in September 2024. Keep an eye on the club's social media channels and website for more information.

Mother’s

The tradition of Mothering Sunday began in the Middle Ages, when the custom of allowing those who had moved away from home to work, could visit their home parishes and mothers on the fourth Sunday of Lent. The modern version, Mother’s Day, is held in Australia on the second Sunday of May each year.

As Mother’s Day looms for another year, many of us spend some time thinking about our mothers, while the mothers among us spend time wondering how our own performance as mothers is panning out, and crucially, how it will be judged into the future.

One thing is clear to mothers of all ages and eras: mothering is challenging and demanding work. It never ends, and every decision will be held up for scrutiny for years to come. Who among us ever made a good decision wandering around the house looking for scissors to cut some knots out of your hair because you haven’t brushed it for weeks, the baby refuses to sleep, and you haven’t had a shower in 3 days?

And so, as Sunday 12 May rolls around, we stop to think about our mothers and the sacrifices they made - and continue to make for us. It is a time to show them that we appreciate them, because as sure as your mum told you to enjoy the time while your baby is little, our mums grow older as we are busy with life, and before we know it, they are gone forever.

We buy them chocolates, take them out for dinner, we get Grandma some new slippers, and sometimes we get a breakfast in bed of warm tea and cold toast. When I think back over the Mothers Days that I have been lucky enough to enjoy with my daughter, the one that stands out is the lukewarm tea and gift from the Mother’s Day stall at school. It takes me straight back to a little room in a hostel with two beds jammed in, everything we owned in a cupboard in the corner, and every night her little warm arms hugging me goodnight.

I would not have missed it for all the knots in my hair.

Bro Fit Penrith: Building Bodies and Minds

In the bustling heart of Penrith lies a gym with a difference, where pumping iron meets mental resilience, and where strength is not just physical but mental too. Bro Fit Penrith, nestled at Unit 3, 37-39 York Road, Jamisontown, isn't just your average fitness centre—it's a sanctuary for men's health and wellbeing.

Founded by Tama and Kristal Te Huna, Bro Fit Penrith is run by Tama and James Te Huna with help from Lawrence Tauasa, Mark Lazare, Danny Denver, and Pio Misa. It is more than just a gym; it's a vision born from a passion for fitness and a commitment to mental health support.

With three beautiful children in tow, the Te Huna family embarked on the journey to provide a space where positivity reigns, and men can find solace amidst the weights and punching bags.

"We wanted to create a space where our boys, Jamie and Jordan, could train and be around positive role models," explained Tama and Kristal Te Huna. "But we also saw the pressing need for men's mental health support in our community. That's why we merged the idea of a men's only gym with mental health awareness programs."

Bro Fit Penrith offers a range of programs catering to all ages and fitness levels. From junior classes focused on strength and conditioning or boxing to adult sessions in the morning and afternoon, there's something for everyone. But it's not just about physical fitness; it's about fostering a supportive environment where men can open up about their mental health struggles without fear of judgment.

“A gym like ours plays a vital role in promoting the health and well-being of men in the community, by providing a supportive environment for physical fitness, whilst also addressing mental health concerns and fostering a sense of community and belonging,” they stated.

"We host guest speakers who address various topics around men's mental health, creating a safe space for our members to share and seek support."

For Tama and the team at Bro Fit Penrith, their mission goes beyond the gym walls. They envision expanding their reach across Australia and even venturing into New Zealand, spreading their message of holistic health and wellbeing.

Since its inception, Bro Fit Penrith has attracted attention from far and wide, with the Penrith Panthers and other well-known figures gracing its floors. But amidst the celebrity visits and bustling classes, the heart of Bro Fit Penrith remains rooted in its commitment to empowering men to be their best selves, both physically and mentally.

Embracing Mindfulness: A Parent’s Guide to Being Present With Their Children.

You may have heard the term mindfulness in relation to personal wellbeing, but have you considered mindful parenting? So, what is mindfulness and how do you include it in the everyday hustle?

Mindfulness in a Nutshell

Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the here and now, without judgement or distraction. Paying deliberate attention to our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and environment, without getting caught up in it. Mindfulness can be practiced in the everyday by mindful eating, mindful walking, or simply paying attention to the task at hand like washing dishes. The trick is to tune into your thoughts, feelings, body, and surroundings. Have you ever just stopped to think about the sun on your face or the sounds of the birds, as go for a walk?

Benefits of Mindfulness

The benefits include reduced stress, improved emotional regulation and sleep, enhanced parent-child relationships, better decision-making abilities, increased empathy and compassion, and increased focus and attention.

Mindful parenting creates increased family harmony, emotional resilience in children, and deeper connections and understanding within the family.

Meditation as a tool

Whilst meditation allows you to be present for a set period, the aim of mindfulness is to remember to come back to the present during the day. Regular meditation practice is known to have benefits including changing and rewiring our brains, to more positive emotions and thoughts. Grey matter in the brain has been shown to increase with regular meditation, improving emotion regulation, planning, problem solving, learning, and memory. In addition, the amygdala, which controls fear, anxiety, and stress, reduces in size.

Mindfulness Techniques

Here are several techniques regularly used in meditation or everyday practice that can be used to develop mindfulness:

• Body Scan Meditation: A mental exercise where you scan your body from head to toe, paying attention to tension and discomfort in the body, and gently releasing it.

• Mindful Breathing: Focus on each inhale and exhale, paying attention to the natural rise and fall of the chest and the stomach. Just a few minutes every day is enough to encourage mental clarity and relaxation.

• Mindful eating: Next time to you eat, pause, and think about how the food’s texture, how it smells, looks, and tastes. This is often a fun activity for children.

• Structured meditation: There are many apps and websites with free mediations including Headspace, Calm, Insight, and Peaceful Kids.

• Catering for 2-3 year old Children

• Situated in Quiet and Safe Street

Turning Pages and Making Friends

In May 2022, local friends Rebecca Legge and Jessica Burton embarked on a mission to bridge the social gap left in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The duo, fuelled by a desire to expand their social circles and cultivate new friendships, formed the 20’s and 30’s Book Club and Social Group. Inspired by the success of similar ventures like GLOSS in Glebe, they decided to bring the concept closer to home.

Their motivation was simple yet profound: to create a space where likeminded individuals could come together, bond over a shared love of books, and forge connections within their community. Unable to find an existing group that matched their vision, Bec and Jess took matters into their own hands, determined to make their dream a reality.

“The hope we had when starting the group was that by having a book to meet around, there was always a fallback topic for conversation and that this would take away some of the awkwardness of starting a conversation with new people,” Bec said.

Fast forward two years, and the group has blossomed into a vibrant community hub. While the initial focus was on book discussions, the group has since evolved to incorporate a diverse range of social activities, including trivia nights, board game sessions, movie outings, and dinners.

For Kim, the non-judgmental atmosphere and genuine camaraderie are what make the experience truly special. "It doesn't matter if you haven't finished the book," she explained. "The social aspect is really enjoyable, and I always feel welcomed despite my inconsistent attendance."

Kate, a newcomer to the group, echoes this sentiment, emphasising how the book club has helped her forge meaningful connections within the local community. "As a new kid on the block, the book club acted as a bridge to the local community and helped me create meaningful friendships that I'm hoping will last for years to come," she shared.

Looking ahead, Bec, Jess, and the rest of the group have ambitious plans to expand their activities and reach even more people in the area. From bowling nights to brewery visits, bush walks to picnics, there's something for everyone to enjoy. And with events regularly posted on social media, interested individuals can easily stay updated and get involved.

Join their Facebook group, '20’s & 30’s Book Club/Social Group,' to learn more about upcoming events and how you can become part of this fabulous community.

Have you thought about joining your local Girl Guides?

For Steph Dilger, Unit Leader of Emu Plains District and Greater Rivers Region Assistant Manager, guiding has been a way of life for 27 years. From a youth to leader, she has been directing others in guiding traditions and loves the challenges and adventures guiding throws at her. “Some of the activities we offer and facilitate at Emu Plains District are cooking (both indoors and outdoors), practice guiding traditions, fun and creative experiences and celebrating different events” said Steph to the Emu and Leonay Gazette.

According to Girl Guides NSW, ‘the Girls Guides have a century of experience in supporting young girls become the women of tomorrow. And whilst the world has changed, the need to support young girls helping them realise their potential - has not. Guides are empowering the women of the future; for they will not only impact their families, communities, and country— they will change the world.’

The group currently caters to girls that are 6 years old to 14 years old.

Soccer Rules in Emu Plains

Emu Plains Football Club are set to have their biggest year yet, taking the field in record numbers for the 2024/25 season.

This year will see a total of 59 teams represent the club in the local Nepean Football Association (NFA) Competition. Consisting of 879 players, coaches, and managers, it is a sizable increase from 660 just the season before.

“We are all looking forward to the season ahead” said Briege McCauley, President of Emu Plains Football Club.

“The club hopes to have a few more teams make their respective grand finals. We also have three intermediate girl’s teams playing in the one division, so maybe we can have a 1, 2, 3 finish. Fingers crossed” she continued to the Emu and Leonay Gazette.

With player, coach, and manager numbers all but complete, one spot only remains unfilled in their Under 5’s team.

There were many highlights on the pitch for the red, white and blue’s last year.

“We had lots of memorable moments. Just watching the smiles on the kid’s faces after they had played or won their games was great. New players, especially our Under 5’s, scoring their first goals. Also, those teams that both made the finals and won their grand finals” Briege explained.

Briege believes the club’s success has a lot to do with the hard work and dedication of the committee and volunteers.

“To see how far the club has come and how much it has grown is thanks to the committee. We wouldn’t have a club if it wasn’t for their help. Our club is very family oriented, and we have lots of volunteers who put their hand up” she concluded.

Emu Plains Football Club would like to thank all their sponsors this year, including Emu Sports Club, Amcal Chemist, AH Glass Fencing, Lone Star Penrith, and Insane Lifting.

To follow the club’s journey, you can find them on Facebook.

Shoulder to Shoulder: Nepean Men’s Shed

“Men don’t talk face to face, they talk shoulder to shoulder” is the catch cry of the Australian Men’s Shed Association. The Men’s Shed concept first originated in the 1980’s in Broken Hill, but the Albury Manual Activities Centre founded in 1978, seems to be the model for the Men’s Shed.

Maxine Chaseling was the key person behind 'The Shed' back in the early nineties and spoke of the stories behind the development of the Shed. The first shed for men, was founded by Chaseling (formerly Maxine Kitto) in 1993. It was in Goolwa in South Australia as part of The Heritage Club, an activities day centre for the older generations, where she was employed as the coordinator.

Nepean Men's Shed formed in 2014. It was originally known as Lower Mountains Men's Shed at Mount Riverview, first forming in early 2011. They moved to the Orchard Hills facility in 2016. Currently there are around 120 members, many from Emu Plains and Glenmore Park.

Activities that the group participate in include woodwork, metalwork, toy making, scroll sawing, model and kit making. There are recreational activities including pool, darts, library, and for the tech heads, electronics, fixing computers, laser burning, 3D printing, and amateur radio. For the green fingers, there is gardening, small motor maintenance such as fixing mowers, and lawn edgers.

The Men’s Shed is involved with fundraising barbecues, and market stalls. Some upcoming plans include private orders and community projects.

Nepean Men's Shed members meet every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 18 Simeon Road, in Orchard Hills (behind the Penrith Christian School) from 9.00am till 2.00pm.

Men's Shed members enjoy social interaction with other men, camaraderie, sharing ideas and learning new skills. More information is available on Nepean Men's Shed Facebook page, or by contacting the President/Secretary on 0419 240180. You can also email: nepeanmshed@gmail.com or simply come in and visit them.

Don’t Let Your ‘Back Scans’ Define You!

One of the most often run examinations for back pain is a radiological scan - an X-ray, CT scan or MRI. All these scans are excellent in certain circumstances, and they can add valuable information to a clinical picture.

I see patients scans and the accompanying reports almost every day. Scans reveal many things, such as vertebrae with fractures, trophic or Modic changes, vertebrae with altered shapes, fused vertebra; many bulging or protruding discs, loss of disc height, osteophytes (bony outgrowths from vertebrae), stenosed (blocked) spinal canals and nerve exits, facet joint arthritis, etc. All these are possible causes of back pain, and proper diagnosis is vital.

Often what is revealed on a scan is very important and helpful re cause of back pain, the preferred treatment, and likely response. In some cases, scans may show a patient’s spine is in excellent condition and thus say little about the cause of their pain.

Sometimes patients come into the clinic having been told, based on scan results, that they’re just getting old, and that there is little that can be done about their pain or their state of

debility. Often such folk then simply put up with the pain, which is often quite high, even when on multiple medications, when help may be available. This is definitely where you shouldn’t let your back scans define you!

While not every case of back pain will be fixed with manual therapies, and indeed some people may need surgery or other treatments, simple intervention with appropriate muscle elongation therapy can often have surprising results. Using specific techniques, we remove inflammatory fluids from back tissues, lengthen back muscles, allowing back tissue function to normalise. With regular treatment over a few weeks or months, depending on the severity of the problem, in most cases chronic back pain goes completely, even in many long-standing cases.

If you have a problem with a back injury or back pain and you’d like to know more, call Andreas at BHW on 02 4777 5264 or 0418 166 269.

FOOD 4 THOUGHT

Plant a Tree for Mum on Mother’s Day

Wilson’s Kitchen and Bar cafe

1/252 high street, Penrith

This month, our lunchtime food review is of Wilson’s Kitchen and Bar Café, located where the Blind Chef Café used to be.

The Wilson’s, as it is known, offers corporate catering and functions, but during the day, it operates as a café. Offering an allday breakfast that includes burgers, rolls, wraps and eggs every way, an extensive addons list, some sweet offerings and a lunch menu that includes a couple of pasta dishes, there’s a wide range to choose from.

It is affordably priced these post COVID days, with most dishes between $19 to $25, medium coffees about $5.50. The menu does not specify gluten free, vegetarian, or vegan dishes, but the beverage menu offers lactose free, almond, oat, and soy options, which is standard these days.

I ordered one of the juices, Strawberry Sunset, which is made to order on site with fresh seasonal fruit. If you love a good fresh juice, here it is.

The staff were happy to accommodate requested changes to the dishes on the menu, as we swapped fried chicken for grilled chicken in one of the chicken burgers. They were also careful to check the food did not contain any sesame, which I am allergic to.

The Chicken Burger was served on a grilled bun with fresh salad veggies and crispy fried chicken, while the grilled chicken they cooked for our other burger was slightly over cooked and dry to our taste.

The side of chips that accompanied the burgers were everything you hope for with a good chip – thick cut, crispy, and tasty.

The café has a pleasant atmosphere, a nice place for lunch on a weekday.

Penrith’s beloved Trees for Mum event is celebrating seventeen years this Mother’s Day.

Penrith City Council’s annual Trees for Mum community tree planting event returns on Sunday 12 May at Hollier Reserve in Emu Plains.

The event will be divided into 30-minute sessions, with the first session starting at 8:30am and the last session at 12:00pm.

Council’s Bushcare team will be using registration numbers to ensure they have enough trees and tags for participants to plant and write on. Register at penrith.city/events

Penrith Mayor Todd Carney praised the event for its longevity and how it continues to provide the community with an opportunity to remember and celebrate their mum.

“Planting a tree is such a simple gesture to honour your mum, grandmother, aunt, or a mother-figure in your life and can be a very positive and meaningful experience to share with family and friends on Mother’s Day.

“Trees for Mum is not only a great way to gift Mum something special, but it’s an opportunity to learn about our local environment and help restore our endangered bushland by planting native trees or shrubs,” Cr Carney said.

Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes and a hat. Sunscreen will be available on the day.

The native trees and shrubs available for planting are proudly provided by Council’s nursery.

To ensure there are enough trees for everyone to plant and so the Penrith Council Bushcare team can coordinate the 30-minute sessions, please book your attendance by registering at penrith.city/events

Pets for First-Time Owners

For those stepping into the world of pet ownership for the first time, the abundance of choices can be overwhelming. From fish to furry friends, each option brings its own set of joys and responsibilities. Let’s explore some of the best pets for first-time owners, catering to various lifestyles and preferences.

Fish: Low-Maintenance and Therapeutic For those seeking a serene presence in their home, fish make excellent companions. With minimal maintenance requirements, they offer a gateway into the world of pet ownership. Regular feeding and tank upkeep are essential, but the tranquillity they bring is unparalleled. Scientifically proven to reduce stress and improve mental wellbeing, an aquarium can be a therapeutic addition to any household.

Dogs: Friendly and Smart For those craving companionship and loyalty, a dog might be the perfect fit. Opting for a low maintenance small to medium-sized breed such as an ‘oodle’ breed, greyhound or cross-breed can offer a balance of intelligence and sociability. Researching breeds known for their compatibility with various lifestyles ensures a harmonious relationship. Dogs not only provide unconditional love but also encourage outdoor activities, fostering a healthy lifestyle for their owners.

Cats: Independent and Affectionate Companions With their puzzling personalities, cats offer a blend of independence and affection. Their low-maintenance nature makes them suitable for individuals with busy schedules or limited living space. Cats thrive in various environments, from cozy apartments to spacious homes. Beyond their playful antics, they teach valuable life lessons to children, promoting responsibility and empathy.

Guinea Pigs: Easy, Social Starters For those seeking a cuddly companion without the demands of traditional pets, guinea pigs fit the bill. These sociable creatures require minimal upkeep and offer endless entertainment with their playful behaviour. Providing a comfortable habitat and nutritious diet ensures their well-being, while regular interaction fosters a strong bond between pet and owner.

Pocket Pets & Birds: Easy First-Time Care Ideal for those with limited time or space, pocket pets and birds offer effortless companionship. Whether it's a rabbit, ferret, or budgerigar, these low-maintenance pets adapt well to various lifestyles. Their simple care requirements make them an excellent choice for first-time owners, allowing them to ease into the responsibilities of pet ownership without feeling overwhelmed.

Ultimately, the best pet for a first-time owner depends on individual preferences, lifestyle, and level of commitment. Whether it's the calming presence of fish, the playful antics of a dog, or the independent charm of a cat, each option brings its own unique joys and challenges. By researching and selecting a pet that aligns with one's needs and capabilities, first-time owners can embark on a rewarding journey of companionship and responsibility.

Lions are Looking for New Members

Ever thought about joining your local Lions Club? Emu Plains Lions Club are currently looking for new members.

Lions are people who work together to fundraise and assist those in our community, who require a helping hand.

You may also enjoy working with a group of like-minded people to achieve positive outcomes. If so, then Lions is for you.

One of the myths of Lions membership is that it takes a lot of personal commitment and time.

“It only takes the time a Member can give, and no more. As we say, family comes first, then work and then Lions” explained Cheryl Devine, President of Emu Plains Lions Club to the Emu and Leonay Gazette.

Being a Lions member is a very rewarding experience. This can be done by making new friends, sharing your talents, expanding your horizons and, also to continuing their Club’s legacy.

If you are interested or would like further information, please contact Steve Wallace, Membership Chair on 0458 471101 or Cheryl Devine on 0417 234295. You can also reach them via email at emuplains@lions.sydney.

Their Facebook page can be found at https://www.facebook.com/emuplainslions/ r New member Patricia Thompson with Alan Cooper at the Easter Raffle at Lennox Village | Image Supplied

Light Shining In The Darkness

Daylight saving is over, and I miss it. Well, I guess I miss the Summer sunshine most of all. Daylight saving just gives me a chance to take advantage of it! Walking the dog, tidying up the yard, having dinner in the sunshine. These things are all fabulous when it’s light, but nowhere near as much fun when it’s dark.

Jesus knew how to take an experience like that and make his point. Once he was at one of the great feasts at night in Jerusalem, where four giant lamps were lit. Against that backdrop, Jesus said ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life’ (John 8:12).

It’s an attention-grabbing image, isn’t it? We all know how important light is. We can’t see much without it, and when we can’t see we don’t feel safe, and we can’t live our lives in the darkness.

There is a lot that could be said about this, but here is the main game: Jesus came to offer us a relationship with God. He’s illustrating that without him we don’t really have a life and are walking in darkness. Lastly, he’s promising life that doesn’t end with death, but continues with God into all eternity.

And it also comes with an invitation - to follow Him. Now I wouldn’t expect you to be persuaded by these words alone, but when you investigate who he was and what he did, there’s more than enough there to persuade us he was not only the real deal, that he not only understood that there was more to life than what we see, but that he himself was the very focus and meaning of life. What an opportunity – to have the darkness lit by a relationship with him.

Anyone who has lost and grieved a loved one knows the trepidation that one experiences as they approach a first, a special occasion or significant day.

Mothers Day is approaching, the second Sunday in May, traditionally a day to recognise our mothers, motherhood, maternal bonds and all those positively contributing to our families in such a role.

This Mothers Day marks 6 years without my amazing Mum. She was a force to be reckoned with, strong, determined, ambitious and creative.

Take some time to invest yourself deep into the lives of those who matter on Mothers Day, time is precious and not promised.

This month, plenty to read, see and do within these pages. Catch up on all the happenings in and across the community.

Enjoy your Community News!

Water what waters you.
