Thriving on Nutrition Support

Vol. 1, #10

Letter From the Director Happy Birthday, Thrivers! We are celebrating 10 years of having the privilege of serving the home parenteral and enteral nutrition community. My sincere appreciation goes to our consumers and employees, past and present, who helped make this dream come true. ThriveRx has made some changes to our website to celebrate this milestone. Hope you all have time to take a look at thriverx.diplomat.is. We have other initiatives underway, including Maximize Health program enhancement and pharmacy expansion. Stay tuned for more information on this and other celebration plans. Thanks again for the pleasure of working with all of you! Deb Pfister, Director of Nutrition

Recruitment has begun for the National Institutes of Health All of Us Research Program, which seeks to extend precision medicine to all diseases by building a national research group of more than a million U.S. participants. Researchers will explore the combined impact of biology, genetics, lifestyle, and environment, which they hope will lead to the development of more effective ways to treat disease. For more information, visit allofus.nih.gov. CALENDAR EVENTS August 2017 August is Digestive Tract Paralysis (DPT) Awareness Month. Staff Spotlight Jill Taliaferro has worked in nutrition support for 19 years. She joined ThriveRx in 2007 as our first clinical dietitian. Jill is a certified nutrition support clinician and has played a key role in creating the ThriveRx nutrition program and supporting materials. Jill provides nutrition evaluation, monitoring, and counseling of our ThriveRx parenteral and enteral home nutrition consumers. Before joining ThriveRx, she spent five years on the nutrition support team at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. She later left the inpatient arena and joined the home nutrition support team. Jill graduated from the University of Connecticut with a bachelor’s degree in dietetics in the School of Allied Health. She resides south of Boston with her husband and two children, Morgan (11) and Austin (7). In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, weightlifting, cooking, and her new puppy, Hoxie!

HERE′S WHAT DEB PFISTER SAID ABOUT JILL:

Jill Taliaferro RD, LDN, CNSC

“Jill has been a pivotal member of our team since our inception. Her clinical knowledge, organizational skills, and consumer compassion are integral to our pillars of care: clinical excellence and consumer advocacy. And she does it all with a great outlook and sense of humor.”

Consumer Spotlight • Ronna Staley We are incredibly lucky to have Ronna Staley as one of our parenteral nutrition consumers. Ronna’s positive attitude and passion for consumer care and advocacy have been infectious for our team and other consumers. Ronna was first diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in her teens. She underwent numerous intestinal resections, eventually resulting in short bowel syndrome. She then started home parenteral nutrition. Despite this challenge, Ronna worked as a successful pediatrician and busy mother of two girls. She became our first parenteral nutrition consumer in July 2007 after following Mark Kestler and his remarkable clinical expertise and supportive care. With Mark, Donna Kloth, Maria Karimbakas, and ThriveRx’s Maximize Health program, Ronna feels she has better managed her health and improved her quality of life. Ronna is now retired and dedicates her time to visiting the elderly, gardening, and cooking. She said she used to be a “microwave queen” but has learned how to cook delicious meals that fit her short bowel diet. Ronna participates in ThriveRx’s support group for adult short bowel syndrome consumers in the Ohio area. Ronna’s said she finds the group inspiring and that the members all help each other.

“Working with ThriveRx has been a remarkable experience. They’re not like any other company I’ve been with. When I joined, I was not medically doing well. I was having a tough adjustment to TPN; I was afraid; the labs and results were hard for me to understand; and I didn’t know what to do. ThriveRx helped me take control.”
