Travel Tips You can travel safely with primary immunodeficiency disease— while keeping your sanity intact—by following these tips. PLAN: Tell your specialty pharmacy well in advance that you plan to travel so you have everything needed before leaving. KEEP IT COOL: If your medications require refrigeration, consider a soft-sided cooler for transport and arrange for a refrigerator when you book hotel rooms.

PLANE TRAVEL MADE EASY:

TSA Cares, a helpline for travelers with disabilities and medical conditions, can provide information about the screening process. For more information, visit tsa.gov/travel. Airlines also have programs to help passengers with disabilities.

Your mediations, pump, and supplies may be brought onboard. Pack them separately from personal items, as they are not subject to a baggage fee.

TSA allows passengers to carry prescription liquid medications needed for medical conditions.

Normally, medication and supplies are X-rayed, but TSA allows passengers to have a visual inspection. This request must be made before the screening process begins—when you approach the security officer at the walk-through metal detector. Have your medication in a clear plastic bag and separated from the other bags being inspected when you begin the screening process. You might want to bring alcohol wipes to clean the pump after it’s handled by TSA agents.

Airline passengers should carry documentation from their health care provider that supports their need to have the medication.

HYDRATE: Traveling can be dehydrating. It is important to

hydrate before leaving, during travel, and when you arrive. EMERGENCY: Bring emergency information, including medical

history and a list of daily medications. Include any allergies. MEDICATIONS: Prescription medication should have the

pharmacy label. SUPPLIES: Pack extra infusion supplies in case of travel

delays or other unexpected circumstances.
