Back to School A new academic year is fast approaching.
Are you ready for school? Is school ready for your child? CONSIDER THESE TIPS FOR STARTING THE YEAR RIGHT:
1. Discuss with your child’s care team what information school personnel should know. You and your child can choose what to share, but remember: It’s important to enable staff to care for your child. 2. Consider creating an Individualized Healthcare Plan, a Section 504 plan, or an Individualized Education Program. These aim to ensure your child’s medical needs do not impact their access to education. Contact your Diplomat Specialty Infusion group consumer advocate to request education tools and help with training school staff.
5. Decide whether to keep factor and other supplies at school. If you do, ensure factor is appropriately stored and accessible to staff and your child. If you don’t keep factor at school, ensure someone can get it if needed. 6. Ensure your child always has their medical alert ID. Contact your consumer advocate for help ordering an ID or to update your medical information.
Remember to be yourself! A bleeding disorder can be overwhelming, but it is only a small part of who you are. The more education we provide those around us, the more we can be at ease.
3. Schedule a meeting before the school year with appropriate staff (teachers, nurse, guidance counselor, etc.) to ensure everyone your child interacts with has the training needed to care for them.
Contact your consumer advocate to request more tips and resources to help you and your child prepare for school.
4. Create a first-aid checklist to leave with school personnel. Include information about what to do during a bleed and any instructions specific to your child.
