A New Hemophilia Physical Therapy Solution

REBUILD, From Diplomat Specialty Infusion Group A cutting-edge collaborative care program designed to enhance physical therapy services and promote positive outcomes for people with hemophilia. With REBUILD, Diplomat Specialty Infusion Group recognizes that: •

People with hemophilia have a rare disorder, with unique challenges from musculoskeletal bleeding.

Physical therapy is key to comprehensive care and must be customized with hemophilia in mind.

Most community physical therapists do not receive specialized training about hemophilia.

Our mission is to partner with people who have hemophilia and their physical therapists to provide the education, support, and collaboration that facilitates successful therapy outcomes.

WHO QUALIFIES?

REBUILD OFFERS:

In general, candidates for the REBUILD program have limited physical function due to musculoskeletal bleeding complications. These can include:

A connection between a local treating therapist and a physical therapist at REBUILD who specializes in hemophilia and related bleeding disorders

Opportunities for specialized training of local physical therapists to learn more about hemophilia and its impact on the musculoskeletal system

A liaison between the patient, their physical therapist, and other members of the hemophilia care team

Acute tissue, muscle, or joint injury

Chronic synovitis (inflammation)

Pre- or post-operative rehabilitation

Target joints or hemophilic arthritis

SKILLED SUPPORT FOR IMPROVED PHYSICAL FUNCTION Physical therapists are highly educated and uniquely skilled in evaluating and treating musculoskeletal problems. They take a detailed history of current client problems and perform physical examinations that include specific, objective tests and measures. They use their findings to assess the problem, set goals for improvement, and develop a customized treatment plan.

THE BENEFITS OF PHYSICAL THERAPY Physical therapy is key to overall hemophilia management and can help strengthen muscles and joints to improve: •

Balance

Everyday function

Flexibility

Mobility

Physical fitness

Physical therapists can also teach about early recognition of musculoskeletal bleeding complications, conservative methods to manage current bleeds, and strategies to prevent future bleeds. The National Hemophilia Foundation describes physical therapists (PTs) as “an integral part of the hemophilia team. They are trained in the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal issues using a wide variety of modalities. Not only are PTs helpful in the management of patents with target joints or those with hemophilic arthropathy, they are also instrumental in the prevention of new target joints in persons with hemophilia by working closely with the patient and their family.” REBUILD’s physical therapists can collaborate with hemophilia treatment centers (HTCs), their physical therapists, and other local therapists to support patients and promote a customized physical therapy approach.
