Be Safe with Traffic and Pedestrians INDIO - Starting Tuesday, Sept. 3, motorists are reminded to use additional caution when driving in or near school zones within the City of Indio. The Indio Police Department will be starting off the school year with maximum traffic enforcement and awareness efforts within city

school zones. The Indio Police Department wants to ensure the safety of students as they travel to and from school. The new school year always brings traffic congestion in the school zones and surrounding areas. Parents are encouraged to teach their children to cross

roadways at a corner, preferably at crossing guard locations, not midblock or from between parked vehicles. Police officers and Police Volunteers will be deployed throughout the city’s school zones to help ensure student safety and reduce traffic congestion during the first week of school. The Indio Police Department will strictly enforce school zone

related traffic violations such as: seat belt violations; distracted driving/cell phone use; flashing school bus light violations; speed violations and parking violations. Officers will also be watchful for pedestrian and bicycle traffic violations. Enforcement efforts are designed to remind motorists that school is back in session and traffic/pedestrian safety is a priority. The Police Department’s

Traffic Unit and School Resource Officers will continue to monitor the traffic/pedestrian safety of all the 22 schools in the city during the school year. Heroin Drug Bust

El Centro Sector Border Patrol Finds Heroin Taped to Woman’s Body

SALTON CITY – Last week, El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Indio Station apprehended a suspected female narcotics smuggler at the Highway 86 checkpoint and seized four packages of heroin taped to her body. The incident occurred at approximately 4 p.m., when a 20-year-old woman, driving a purple 1998 Chevrolet Malibu approached the Border Patrol checkpoint located between

Westmorland and Salton City. Agents directed her to secondary inspection were a Border Patrol canine team conducted a cursory inspection resulting in an alert around the driver’s seat of the vehicle. Border Patrol agents conducted a pat down of the woman, which revealed four plastic wrapped packages duct taped to her upper abdomen. Agents also discovered a pair of shoes with hollowed out soles, a common method

used by smugglers to conceal contraband. The heroin had a combined weight of approximately 2.36 pounds and an estimated street value of $75,000. The woman, a United States Citizen, was arrested as the sole suspect in the case. The suspect and narcotics were turned over to the Imperial County Drug Enforcement Administration.
