Memorial Day Flower Drop

The Palm Springs Air Museum held its 27th Memorial Day event. They honor all war veterans who have died to keep America Free. Thousands of people, including small children,

veterans, and their families, came to honor their loved ones and all who died in the war.

The day was full of memorable events as veterans were warmly welcomed with handshakes and expressions of gratitude for their service. It

was unfortunate to see many of them in wheelchairs due to age or disability, but some had brought their chairs, anticipating an extended stay. Tables and chairs were arranged in various hangars, adorned with flags, leis, fans,

and candy for everyone’s enjoyment. Visitors also got to view 75 planes from the museum’s collection.

In front of the Heat Wave Band were benches for the audience to sit and enjoy the entertainment. The food

vendors had a busy day due to the long lines. However, the weather was pleasant this year, with warm temperatures and a refreshing breeze. During the event, Director

Jerry Keller honored with Palm Springs Walk of Stars

Palm Springs honored Jerry Keller with the Palm Springs Walk of Stars with his star on his 88th birthday. The star dedication was held in front of LULUs Restaurant at 200 S. Palm Canyon Drive next to his late wife, Barbara’s, star. Keller is the owner of LULU. So it is only fitting that their Stars be next to each other. A line of orange-covered chairs was placed in the outdoor area of LULU for some people attending. So many came that there was standing room only on the sidewalk. Several hundred people filled the street before the Restaurant to show their love for this man. Nona Watson,

CEO of the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce, introduced all the speakers who spoke about Jerry’s life and his impact on Palm Springs and the whole of Coachella Valley. The first speaker was Jeffrey Bernstein, mayor protem of Palm Springs. He read the proclamation stating Jerry Keller Day, May 23rd. Other speakers spoke about Jerry’s love of people and his family. Each speaker talked about how Jerry contributed to improving Palm Springs and other cities because of his business sense. They said he was an entrepreneur, Visionary, statesman, community leader, optimist, a

Sounds of 1960s and 1980s Celebrated

The intoxicating sounds of Southern California’s Turnof-the-Century music scene, as well as the groundbreaking stylings of the 1960s and 1980s are revisited thanks to a handful of great 2023 releases.

Title: Best of Friends (Big Stir Records)

You might like if you enjoy: Matthew Sweet, Walter Clevenger & the Dairy Kings, Psychic Rain, Jellyfish

Tell me more: For many years I wrote an award-winning column titled “Orange Pop” for an Orange County, CA-based publication where I had the thrill of covering that region’s explosive music scene. Many of the artists — notably No Doubt, Sugar Ray, Walter Trout and Lit — went on to global success after making a splash locally. However, many of my favorite artists achieved only cult status despite their incredible talent. It’s great to see Turn-of-the-Century power pop trio Sparkle*Jets U.K. return with a fantastic new

album (Best of Friends, available June 30) — the band’s first new studio LP in more than 20 years. The aptly-titled Best of Friends finds Michael Simmons (lead and backing vocals, guitar, keyboards, drums), Susan West (lead and backing vocals) and Jamie Knight (bass, 12-string guitar) offering their distinctive sonic stamp on 21 gems originally recorded by Southern California-based artists who were their contemporaries. The album opens with a wistful take on Walter Clevenger’s “Hold On Tight” before the band turns on a dime to deliver a glorious take on The Masticators’ “He’s Coming Out.” A Baroque pop reading of Kompost’s “One Summer Sunday,” luxurious cover of Cockeyed Ghost’s “Ludlow 6:18,” a buoyant version of Candypants’ “I Want a Pony” and rollicking run through The Dons’ “Till We Meet Again” are among my other faves on the first half of the terrific title. The momentum and caliber of the collection never falters; sumptuous versions of The

Shazam’s “Sunshine Tonight,” Linus of Hollywood’s “Good Sounds,” Wondermints’ “In and Around Greg Lake,” Kenny Howes and the Yeah!’s “Right Idea,” The Negro Problem’s “Mahnsanto” and The See Saw’s “Probleme Romantique” on the last half of the set have me pretty sure that Sparkle*Jets U.K.’s Best of Friends will land on my favorite albums of 2023 list. Title: Dirty Water Revisited (Big Stir Records)

You might like if you enjoy: The Standells, the Electric Prunes, the Chocolate Watchband

Tell me more: Released on May 26, Dirty Water Revisited marks the high profile return of founding Standells’ guitarist Tony Valentino. Along with singer-keyboardist Larry Tamblyn, bassist Jody Rich and drummer Benny King, Valentino was a key player in the Los Angeles-spawned quartet’s groundbreaking garage rock sound showcased in their

timeless 1966 hit “Dirty Water.” On his return Valentino — as well as vocalist/drummer Duane Waider, keyboardist Zero E and bassist-guitarist/vocalist Gary Kaluza — revisits a handful of the enduring gems recorded by the Standells including a rousing take on the aforementioned “Dirty Water,” rhythm guitaranchored “Sometimes Good Guys Don’t Wear White” (the latter bolstered by Valentino’s harmonica playing), the electrifying “Barracuda” and rollicking “Try It.” The Valentino-produced album also hits high marks thanks to the surf-meets-soul rocker “There Is a Storm Comin’,” the blistering hardcore tribute “I’m a Sexy Punk Rocker” (the latter a nod to the Standells’ influence on punk rock), infectious “Vicki” and psychedelic “Love Me.”

Tell me more: Fans of melodic ‘60s-mining rock will want to get a listen to the wonderful this then are The Mosquitos! The Mosquitos’ story is almost as compelling as the band’s music; in the mid-1980s the rising outfit called it quits on the brink of stardom (indeed, the band was named Best New Rock Group at the New York Music Awards in 1986). Now fast forward to 2023

Ike Beat Her, Erwin Healed Her Heart

Music icon Tina Turner is dead at the age of 83. But through her hits, the singer lives on in the hearts of her fans.

And Tina Turner’s mega career and life still fascinate millions today. Because happiness and unhappiness are very close to each other – also because of these two married men: musician Ike Turner († 76) and the Cologne music manager Erwin Bach (67).

One beat her. The other healed her heart.

Horror Husband Ike Turner! Tina Turner met him in St. Louis in 1956. The guitarist and his Kings of Rhythm were considered one of the hottest bands around at the time. Turner applied for the backing vocals position. But Ike recognized her talent. So he gave Turner (whose real name was Anna Mae) not only his last name through marriage but also the name Tina—renamed the band, Ike & Tina Turner.

The bon vivant won the heart of Tina Turner, who worked in a hospital then. Wedding in 1962. Both went on tour with the “Ike and Tina Turner” revue.

A show full of eroticism and gripping music. 1969 opening act for the Rolling Stones, 1971, awarded a Grammy.

Great luck! No, a marriage of terror. Ike got drunk on drugs, hit Tina, suppressed her, didn’t give her attention, and made her life hell.

Blue eyes, chapped lips: In her book Happiness Becomes You (2020), Turner wrote: “Cut lips, black eyes, dislocated joints, broken bones, and mental anguish became part of everyday life.”

Nevertheless, the singer stayed with Ike Turner for 14 years, only separated in 1976, and fled to a friend. Turner told the New York Times 2018 that she was embarrassed that it took so long to break up. Ike Turner died of a cocaine overdose in 2007.

He donated her a kidney. It was long before Tina Turner let a man into her heart again. Then, in 1985, music manager Erwin Bach entered her life. He worked at the record company that Turner was signed to, and at the time, he picked her up at the airport. Turner: “He was

just so different, so relaxed, so comfortable, so unpretentious.”

Both fell in love, and Bach became Turner’s manager, advising her on her career.

Turner: “It was difficult to commit myself like that again. But I’m happier than I ever could have dreamed of.” She moved to Cologne to live with him in 1986, and 1994 the couple

went to Switzerland. In 2022 she and Bach bought an old country estate on Lake Zurich.

Wedding in 2013, Tina Turner and Erwin Bach were considered the quiet dream couple in the rock world; after a farewell tour in 2009, the pop star withdrew into private life.

“In good times and in bad” was not just a marriage vow

and The Mosquitos’ infectious style blending songwriting elements spanning from the 1950s and 1960s to the 1980s can be heard by all. Standouts abound on the 47-track double CD that collects many of the Mosquitos’ best studio and live recordings, with shining vocal harmonies a key part of what makes the outfit’s sound so special. As noted in press notes released in connection with the collection: “Since the band only recorded a third of their original songs in the studio, the rest are represented in a live setting. Much care was taken to find the best versions, and some you’ll swear are studio recordings.”

“Let’s Stomp” is a hyper successful mix of 1950s rockabilly and Devo-like minimalist rock that connects with a single listen.

“You Don’t Give a Hang (About Me)” is fully original, with layers of shimmering guitars and immersive vocals. “Darn Well,” “Quit It” and “I’m So Ashamed” are rousing garage rockers; “Wrong Side of Town” and “I’ll Just Hide” conjure up the bona fide excitement of the British Invasion. The band’s melodic power pop nugget “That Was Then, This Is Now” (a cover of that Mosquitos original was a comeback hit for the Monkees in 1986), sumptuous “I Know a Secret,” propulsive “Standing In the Rain,” tender “Stephanie Says” and affecting “Christmas Dream” are other wonderful songs on the essential collection. for Erwin Bach but a motto in life. He stood by Tina Turner when she suffered a stroke in 2013 and was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016. Then, in 2017, he donated a kidney to her, saving her life.

Now Bach accompanied her on her final journey. There could not have been a better person than him for this.

CA Lottery Player Strikes It Rich for the Second Time!

When Ruby Evans finished scratching her Instant Prize Crossword Scratchers® in her car outside a Compton donut shop, she thought she’d won $2,000 on one of the tickets.

She returned to Sweet Time Donuts and asked for a claim form, knowing

she’d won money. Imagine her shock, though, when the owner scanned Evans’ ticket, and a different figure with three extra zeros appeared on the Lottery terminal screen. So Evans hadn’t won $2,000 as she thought; she won $2,000,000, the game’s top prize.

This isn’t even Evans’s first time winning a big California Lottery prize. She said she won $100,000 playing a different Scratchers game in 2013!

she loves. She said she also recently won $5,000 at Sweet Time Donuts. Evans says her fellow customers tease her whenever they see her at the donut shop.

“They say, ‘Ruby, haven’t you won enough? Save some winners for all of us,’” Evans laughed. Evans said she’s also thrilled to hear the owners of Sweet Time Donuts get a $10,000 bonus for selling her $2 million ticket.

Queen The Greatest Live: “Dragon Attack”

Queen has a lot of hit songs to choose from, but during their performances, they always surprise the audience with unexpected classics. In this episode, we look back at a thrilling “Dragon Attack” performance that smoothly transitions into a fan-favorite song.

Certain songs are essential for a Queen concert, like “Another One Bites The Dust,” “Radio Ga Ga,” and “We Will Rock You.” However, with their extensive music library, the band likes to mix things up by adding less wellknown tracks and seamlessly blending them during their shows. This keeps their loyal fans engaged and excited.

Join Queen in this “Queen

The Greatest Live” episode as they perform at Milton Keynes

Bowl in Buckinghamshire on June 5th, 1982. This iconic show featured Brian May’s jaw-dropping guitar showcase, “Dragon Attack,” which quickly became a fan favorite. The song was released as the B-side of

the “Another One Bites

The Dust” single and was a highlight of the 1980s album “The Game.” The song’s fiery, funky fretwork was flavored by the long nights the band spent at Munich’s downtown discotheque

Sugar Shack while recording at Musicland Studios, which is even referenced in the song’s lyrics. Despite being recorded late at night or early in the morning, and possibly under the influence, “Dragon Attack” was consistently performed between 1980 and 1985 and often jammed out by the band. During this memorable performance at Milton Keynes Bowl, “Dragon Attack” flowed into a reprise of the fan-favorite anthem “Now I’m Here” from 1974’s “Sheer Heart Attack.” Keep an eye out for the moment inQ the beginning when Brian breaks a guitar string on his Red Special but quickly switches to a spare and continues to rock the crowd.

GEMINI FESTIVAL OF GOODWILL, OF HUMANITY & WORLD INVOCATION DAY

The third Spring Festival, that of Gemini is Saturday, June 3, 2023 at the time of the full moon. Each new and full moon festival is occult in nature, hiding deep esoteric truths about the true nature and salvage of humanity.

Gemini is the sign of receiving and distributing. The Gemini Festival gathers the Light, Love and Will of God and distributes it to humanity in the form of Goodwill. This Goodwill enters the hearts and minds of humanity to harmonize world conditions. The Lord of Love (Christ, called Maitreya in the East) presides over this distribution of Love/Wisdom while preaching the last sermon of the Buddha to those assembled for the festival.

Gemini, as the third sign of the zodiac, completes the triangle of Aries (divine ideas), Taurus (will to good), Gemini (will to love) and creates a field of unification for humanity. The Gemini festival is also called World Invocation Day (the prayer The Great Invocation is the mantram of direction and healing for humanity), Festival of Humanity and Goodwill Day. This festival creates a deep aspiration within humanity towards human and spiritual harmony, unifying all peoples, all nations, all cultures, East and West. During the Gemini Festival, the Forces of Reconstruction stream into humanity, ushering in an era of pronounced creative activity and will bring about the rebuilding of the tangible world upon the new lines. This the total destruction of the old forms will necessitate.

Gemini is one of the most important of the twelve signs and its unifying influence lies behind all the

RISA’S STARS

signs (little known & realized by most) because the Ray 2 of Love-Wisdom pours through Gemini. Thus the occult teaching that “love underlies the entire universe …all happenings, all events, all peoples.”

This underlying love of Deity, love originating from Sirius, reaches our solar system through Gemini and flows into the hearts and minds of humanity everywhere. “From the center which we call humanity, let the Plan of Love and Light work out, and may it seal the door where evil dwells.

ARIES: A revolutionary idea, dream or vision, held long within your heart and mind, is precipitating down into form and matter. It’s about to manifest. The next several years, which seems a long time but truly is only a blink of God’s eyes, brings forth what you’ve needed, longed and hoped would occur. Through persistence you will love this vision/ dream into existence. Then you are to share it.

TAURUS: You never lose your vision or knowledge of the tasks you’re called to perform. No matter what occurs - surprising events, losses, people, ideas and hopes falling away (why? you ask) - know that “love underlies all happenings of the times.” That love isn’t from a person but from the greater realities guiding our lives. You’re to focus now only on the present. Choices (and events) made during this past no longer have life. Only the creative tasks of the present are real.

GEMINI: Happy Birthday, Gemini. Your thoughts, ideas and communications clarify somewhat though not completely. This last month it felt as if everything mental

deserted your ability to be understood. It’s as if Mercury remained behind the scenes. Misinterpretations slowly turn around, ideas become clarified and long-lost friends may call. For the next month much remains obscure in order that you spiritualize all actions. Notice how you keep much to yourself these days.

CANCER: You think about, ponder upon and consider goals for the coming months. They’re connected to expectations, ideals, and how you want your life to be. Previous goals, ideals and expectations, having served you well, are now disappearing. Life has changed so radically in the past three years that newer and freer points of view are now forming. This is also due to influences by friends, colleagues, family and those younger than you. Amidst all of this, maintain a regular daily routine of hope and happiness.

LEO: Your creative acts, abilities and expressions are most important now. These actually constitute your real life (no matter your profession). They (creative acts) are closest to your heart and they define the qualities and gifts that best will assist others in the unfolding Aquarian Age. If you continue with your creative expressions, your life’s purpose is revealed. What studies, new or old, must you now initiate? Greater mastery is yours should you pursue your true heart’s desires. Ponder on this.

VIRGO: You are thinking deeply so you can have a wider perspective. Mortality (the idea of death, what that means and the reality of life after death) is something you will think about in the coming months. This is a healthy (scholarly) response to the

present changes occurring on our planet. There’s an underground, nonverbal, non-externalized river of communication occurring between you and others. Fill and charge (through visualization) the waters with love.

LIBRA: This is a special time to communicate and explain to intimates (family, friends, lover, partners, etc.) thoughts and ideas that deeply concern you and explain clearly the choices you’ve made. Do not enter unassisted into anything new. It’s best to have another’s mind and heart and state of consciousness with you to provide perspective. This helps you clarify, choose, and accomplish more than if alone. Discuss everything. You need more love and care. This comes from open communication. Ask for what you want and need.

SCORPIO: Most of us think we have free will. We do, somewhat and to an extent. We can choose what we do each day. We can choose how we behave. We can think about where to live and who we want to live with. But really there’s a greater reality overlighting us. It’s best to be more fluid, to know we have very little free choice, and to discover what that greater reality is that hovers over, surrounds and penetrates our little lives. Make its acquaintance. We can choose to love.

SAGITTARIUS: Great opportunities seem to be moving toward you in their own time and place. Be aware of this. However, don’t expect anything in particular. Be surprised. That’s a paradox, I know but it’s true and real and practical. Listen to all communications, from yourself and to and from others, assessing their

communications carefully. Messages could wound, uplift, destroy, deny or be a refuge (sangha). This latter is greatly needed by everyone at this time. Which will (can) you choose to offer?

CAPRICORN: In your daily (successful, ambitious, creative, caring) life of service, you might find yourself in two places at once. Your mind here and your body over there somewhere. This is the Gemini experience in the daily life of a Capricorn (at this time, not forever). You attempt to bring a synthesis to this duality. Amidst the constant changing events, amidst the vicissitudes and instability of our present times, you find poise, balance and harmony. This is the Soul. Call upon it each moment if in distress or overwhelmed. It responds immediately.

AQUARIUS: It’s best to be among the young and playful, the innocent and childlike, the romantic and creative. Then you will become all of these, too, and discover new outlets of art and creativity and interests. You’ll see things in a newer, more golden light and your imagination will flow outward making your entire life a place of happiness and joy. Often you are toiling among questions. At this time, just be the artist and futurist that you’re called to be. The new era depends on you to bring all things new forth.

PISCES: Know that everyone and everything in your environments supports you. Display your trust in them and show your gratitude to them for being in your life at this very moment and all the moments to come. Something’s coming to an end. A new life will be built from the remains of the old – a new community that creates the foundation for newer and greater achievements. Bid the past farewell. It served its purposes well. Now you have new road to travel on and new promises to keep.

No Billing Statements; Board Changes Collection Rules

Hi Kelly, we recently purchased a unit in a small development that does not send out monthly statements. I find this rather strange as they sent me a letter saying that my monthly dues are due at the first of the month. How am I supposed to know if they received my payment (sent by check) and that I do not incur any unknown assessments or late fees? I receive monthly statements for just about anything I have an account with. Is there a law or ruling that requires HOA management companies to provide a monthly statement to the homeowners? M.F.,

Dear Mr. Richardson: I just learned from the manager on behalf of the HOA that monthly fee/dues statements are a courtesy. In other words I am responsible to pay without a bill?? Is this true?? J.K., Anaheim

Dear M.F. and J.K.: The HOA is not currently required by law to send out monthly invoices stating the amount and due date of regular assessments. Many management companies make this a customer service practice, but it is not required. The law provides homeowners some important information and protection regarding their payment of assessments.

Civil Code Section 5615 requires owners to be individually notified (by mail unless the homeowner has opted otherwise)

at least 30 but not more than 60 days prior to the increased assessment becoming due. So, you will always know the due date of any changed assessment well in advance.

The address for overnight payment of assessments must be disclosed in the HOA’s Annual Policy Statement, per Civil Code Section 5655, which also requires HOAs to provide a receipt of payment if the owner requests it.

The due date of assessments if typically the first of the month but should be disclosed in the HOA’s Annual Policy Statement, which per Civil Code Section 5310(a) (7) requires HOAs to publish a written statement of assessment delinquency policies and practices.

Civil Code Section 5650(b) says that unless the CC&Rs allow a longer time, they are delinquent 15 days after becoming due.

Best regards, Kelly

Dear Kelly, can HOAs unilaterally make a change to billings and collection policy relating to when payments are due, as it can have a material effect on an individual member’s finances/cash flow and is not what was agreed to when joining the association? To me the action is no different than if your mortgage or auto lender wanted to accelerate your payments - Granted there’s language in those agreements that prohibit it. J.B., San Clemente

Dear J.B.: The HOA board establishes and revises the HOA’s assessment delinquency policies and practices, which are required

to be disclosed annually as part of the association’s Annual Policy Statement. However, revising this document is not necessarily an operating rule change requiring the 2-step 28day notice procedure of Civil Code Sections 4360 and 4365. Civil Code 4355(a)(4) requires boards to use the 2-step 28-day process for changes in the standards of assessment repayment plans the

HOA accepts. Otherwise, board can change those policies and procedures in any open board meeting, after announcing the subject on a posted agenda. Thanks for your question, Kelly.

Stewart Rhodes Sentenced to 18 Years in Prison

The founder of the farright anti-government militia group Oath Keepers was sentenced Thursday to 18 years in prison for orchestrating a weekslong plot that culminated in his followers attacking the U.S. Capitol in a bid to keep President Joe Biden out of the White House after winning the 2020 election. The judge also imposed an enhancement for domestic terrorism, the first time that has happened in one of the hundreds of Capitol riot cases brought by the federal government. That move could signal lengthy sentences for other members of far-right groups like Oath Keepers and the now-defunct Proud Boys, who have been convicted of seditious conspiracy.

During the trial, prosecutors portrayed Rhodes as the leader of the Oath Keepers movement who had been pushing his followers to take up arms against the government. The organization recruits past and present military and police officers who believe the federal government is out to strip citizens of their

civil liberties and paints its members as defenders against tyranny. Prosecutors said that as networks declared Biden the election winner, Rhodes urged his supporters to storm the Capitol. They did so to disrupt the electoral college vote certification and delay a transfer of power from Donald Trump to Biden.

A Washington jury convicted Rhodes and four others of the seditious conspiracy charge in November, marking the most significant victory for the government in its sprawling investigation into Jan. 6 rioting in the nation’s capital. The sentence is the longest in the hundreds of Capitol riot cases.

At a sentencing hearing Thursday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn Rakoczy argued that although no Oath Keepers message explicitly laid out a plan to attack the Capitol, Rhodes “doggedly drilled” Trump’s false claims of election fraud into his followers and pushed them toward armed rebellion. She said that Rhodes continued to profess those beliefs in interviews

and speeches from jail.

Mehta denied his request for leniency, noting that Rhodes is not remorseful and continues to represent an ongoing threat to democracy. She also ordered him to pay $1 million in restitution to victims of the attack on Capitol employees and police officers.

The judge also rejected arguments from Rhodes and co-defendants, including

Kelly Meggs, the leader of the Florida Oath Keepers chapter, that the court should use a lower standard than seditious conspiracy for their actions. Instead, Mehta ruled that Rhodes was responsible for the actions of his coconspirators, including a violent assault on police and congressional staffers, because of his position in Oath Keepers and his words.

Mehta’s sentence is the

latest blow to the Oath Keepers, which has grown into one of the most significant militias in America and whose members are a small but vocal minority of the country’s population of 330 million. The convictions have shattered the organization’s image as a law-abiding group of patriotic citizens and may lead some to turn away from extremist movements like it in the future, experts say.

As the latest debt ceiling fight looms, calls are surfacing for a wacky solution: minting a trilliondollar coin. The idea is based on the Modern Monetary Theory, or MMT, which says the government can create money out of thin air to pay its bills.

The idea is to mint a $1 trillion platinum coin and deposit it with the Federal Reserve. This would bypass Congress and avoid a default.

What is a trilliondollar coin?

As the political deadlock over the debt ceiling worsens, a novel solution has been proposed: creating a trilliondollar coin. This entails the Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, directing the US Mint to produce a platinum coin worth $1 trillion and depositing it in the Federal

Reserve to alleviate the country’s financial crisis.

The idea is that a loophole in the law permits the Treasury Department to mint platinum coins, deposit them with

The idea of minting a trillion-dollar coin has resurfaced among Democrats as a possible solution to avoid a debt ceiling crisis. This concept is based on Modern Monetary Theory, which suggests that the government can create more money to pay its bills without congressional approval for new debt issuance. While this approach could boost the economy by increasing bank reserves and credit availability, it may also compromise the independence of the Federal Reserve and lead to a chaotic default. Therefore, experts were consulted to determine the feasibility of

this unconventional proposal. The proposed coin would have an exaggerated face value and be stored in a Federal Reserve vault to prevent a default on government bonds. The coin solution was introduced in 1992 and gained attention during the debt ceiling crisis. It allows the president to bypass Congress, but its constitutionality is uncertain. Aides are considering using a clause in the 14th Amendment to address the current debt limit issue. Proponents suggest minting a trillion-dollar coin and depositing it at the Federal Reserve to inject cash into the Treasury and avoid breaching the debt ceiling.

Palm Springs Air Museum Memorial Day Flower Drop

Continued from Page 1

Fred Bell spoke to the crowd about the significance of Memorial Day beyond just being a holiday. He emphasized that it was a day to honor the brave men and women who wore uniforms, pledged to

keep our country safe, and tragically never returned home. Additionally, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the return of our Vietnam POW veterans.

During the ceremony to honor fallen soldiers from WWII, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan, more than 30 Gold Star Family members were presented

with white roses. Each family member’s lost loved one was mentioned by name. Father Johnson conducted a prayer, and the national anthem was sung. Gregg Miller and others respectfully carried red and white roses to the plane. The event culminated in a Missing Man formation executed by four

jets flying over the Air Museum. Today’s event was great except for one little hiccup: the flowers were delayed! The airport had necessary flights that needed to take off and land first. Fred Bell felt terrible about the delay, but it wasn’t his fault. Despite the wait, many people stuck around and patiently

waited for the flower drop. In the end, the flowers were dropped at the Air Museum hangars instead, and people gathered there to pick them up and show their appreciation for our brave servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives for our country’s freedom.

California State Assembly Passes Firearm Tax

Today, the California State Assembly advanced legislation to impose a new excise tax on firearm manufacturers, firearm dealers, and ammunition vendors in California. The proceeds from these taxes would be directed towards better protecting Californians from mass shootings and gun violence, including school safety measures and violence intervention and prevention programs. Authored by Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel (D - Woodland Hills), Chair of the Legislature’s Gun Violence Prevention Working Group, Assembly Bill (AB) 28 secured the votes of more than two-thirds of legislators.

“It’s shameful that gun manufacturers are reaping record profits at the same time that gun violence has become the leading cause of death for kids in the United States,” said Assemblymember Gabriel.

“This bill will fund critical

school safety measures and proven violence prevention programs that will save lives and protect communities across California.”

The tax, which is estimated to raise over $160 million annually, will channel funds to the California Violence Intervention and Prevention Grant Programs well as school mental health services and safety measures, firearm investigation and clearance rate initiatives, firearm relinquishment programs for domestic abusers and other prohibited persons, trauma-informed services for victims of gun violence, and firearm safety education.

“This is a time of crisis and challenges—with surging gun sales and violence nationwide—and also opportunity and progress as California leaders continue to lead the way on gun safety reform that is driven by evidence and real impact,”

said Mike McLively, Policy Director for Giffords

Since this bill was introduced, the United States has experienced hundreds of mass shootings, including horrific incidents in Monterey

Park and Half Moon Bay. The surge in gun violence comes as firearm purchases rose to record levels in 2020 and 2021, with more than 43 million guns estimated to have been purchased. At the same

time, gun manufacturers have recorded record-breaking profits, noting that the growth they have experienced in recent years has been “nothing short of remarkable.”

Trade Justice Advocates Call for Climate Peace

Next week, trade negotiations resume in Sweden between the U.S. and the European Union, and advocates urge all parties to sign a “Climate Peace Clause.”

In recent years, multiple nations, including the U.S., have used outdated trade agreements to stop other countries from favoring their renewable energy sector.

Ilana Solomon, the nonprofit Trade Justice Education Fund spokesperson, said the trade challenges are a significant obstacle to ambitious climate policy and a livable future.

“In the context of a climate emergency where countries must be putting in place ambitious climate policies, it’s madness to have governments using trade rules to threaten action on climate change,” Solomon asserted.

Several countries threaten to challenge the electric vehicle tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act in the U.S. and other climate policies in the carbon border adjustment mechanism in the EU. So far, no countries have committed to signing a climate peace clause. Thus far, courts have proclaimed climate policies from eight states to violate trade agreements.

Solomon argued that governments must form a pact to refrain from using dispute resolution mechanisms and trade and investment agreements to challenge other countries’ climate policies.

“We will be delivering thousands of petitions from concerned members of the public who want to see the U.S. and the EU agree to a climate peace clause in the upcoming trade talks,” Solomon added.

philanthropist who had mutual respect for all people, and more. Those glowing remarks were made by friends, business associates, and family.

Rancho Mirage Councilman Ted Weill brought humor to the podium before adding that his city was better because of Keller. Fred Bell said the Palm Springs Air Museum also benefitted from aid from Keller. CEO of DAP, David Brinkman, spoke about how Barbara and Jerry brought so much help and love to the AIDS community. The Keller children also got stories of Keller as they grew up and what he is like today.

Jerry Keller took to the podium to thank everyone for attending. He said all his friends, business leaders, and

family had helped him through his ups and downs in life. Jerry was so grateful for this Star honor. Keller spoke of his love for his wife, Barbara, and how he missed her. Watching her work her magic made him the man he was. Keller started his retirement by opening LULU’s Restaurant and another in Rancho Mirage. He is a great cook. He has never really retired.

Keller is still very involved with the business in his beloved city, Palm Springs. Keller has gotten many local awards. He got a standing ovation before and after his speech.

The Star Dedication came about in front of the Restaurant.

The unveiling arrived, and Keller was given a miniature Star replica for his home and a Star pin to wear. People came to get photos with their friends.

Guests were then sent inside

to tasty appetizers of shrimp, salads, meatballs, lamb chops, and more. Flavored waters,

lemonade, and tea were the chosen refreshments. Mod Girl provided up-tempo music for

the occasion. An event that had a Keller signature to it.

Zoo Visitors Are Allowed To Torture Kiwi For Money!

In New Zealand, there is outrage about the treatment of their national bird in a zoo in the U.S.: At the zoo in Miami, visitors are allowed to pet a kiwi named Paora in bright light and take selfies with the bird for a fee of about 20 dollars, as can be seen in videos that the zoo posted on the Internet.

The kiwi (snipe ostrich) is a flightless bird native only to New Zealand. Most importantly - it is nocturnal!

Upset New Zealanders launched Tuesday’s online petition titled “Save this mistreated Kiwi.”

Paora had been sent to the Miami Zoo as an egg in 2019 as part of a loan agreement between the Smithsonian National Zoo and the New Zealand government.

“He has been tamed

and is exposed to bright fluorescent lights four days a week, touched by dozens of strangers, stroked on his sensitive whiskers, laughed at and displayed like a toy,” the petition states.

Organizers say they hope an investigation will be launched into the bird’s treatment and will ultimately be relocated to a more appropriate place. “Kiwis are our precious treasures, not America’s toys,” they said.

Distinctive features of kiwis include their furry, delicate feathers, strong legs with large feet and sharp claws, stunted wings, and long beaks.

New Zealanders are very proud of this oddball, which they consider their emblem. On the World Conservation Union (IUCN) Red List, kiwis are classified as “vulnerable.”

Propane a Key Energy Solution in New Round of Clean School Bus

face facts that it will take a mix of energy sources to achieve that goal,” said Steve Whaley, director of autogas business development with the Propane Education & Research Council.

In 2022, the EPA solicited applications for $1 billion for zero-emission and lowemission school bus rebates— the $1 billion from this first round of funding paid for 2,350 electric school buses. The budget also awarded 109 lowemissions propane buses. The amount of money distributed for electric buses could have helped fund as many as 29,000 propane buses, assuming each bus received the $30,000 incentive from the program.

“The true energy mix lies somewhere between all propane autogas or allelectric buses,” Whaley said. “To further lower the cost for school districts applying for electric buses, the propane industry is now providing propane-powered recharging systems as an affordable and resilient infrastructure solution.”

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced a new round of funding for Clean School Buses. This funding will enable school transportation directors to take advantage of propane’s clean and reliable benefits through dedicated propane autogas school

buses or propane-powered recharging infrastructure. The program prioritizes high-need local educational agencies and rural and tribal school districts. Transportation directors can receive up to $35,000 through this program for every propane autogas bus purchased. Propane is an affordable, portable, and

readily available energy source, making it an ideal solution for the prioritized categories.

“Every child deserves a safe, clean, healthy ride to school. If we keep pouring money only into expensive electric buses—even with rebates or grants—only a select number of students will be able to see that reality. We need to

When considering wellto-wheel emissions, the 2,350 diesel buses the grant replaced with electric ones will reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by just 665 metric tons per year and carbon dioxide emissions by only 36,870 metric tons. If the funds had gone toward the 29,000 propane buses to replace diesel, it would have reduced nearly ten times the amount of NOx emissions and three times the amount of carbon dioxide emissions.

Propane-powered charging infrastructure uses microgrid technology powered by renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and a propane generator to reliably recharge school buses independent of the grid reliably, providing a portable option that can be installed in as little as 24 hours. With the grant, school districts can apply for up to $395,000, split between an electric bus and its charging infrastructure, including propane-powered options. Applications must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov no later than 11:59 p.m. EST on Tuesday, August 22, 2023. Conservation Groups Slam SCOTUS Ruling on Wetland Protections

The U.S. Supreme Court has gutted federal protections for much of the country’s wetlands.

The court found that the Waters of the United States rule, part of the Clean Water Act, only applies to wetlands with a surface connection to a navigable body of water. Conservation groups have said that puts up to 80% of U.S. wetlands at risk for pollution and development,

with ephemeral streams and headwaters in western states at particular risk.

Alex Funk, director of water resources and senior counsel for the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, predicted the ruling would have widespread negative consequences.

“This is going to put major setbacks on our ability to adapt to climate change, respond to extreme weather events,” he said. “So, anyone that hunts,

fishes, or recreates - there was a big hit to that from the court.”

The case was brought by a family in Idaho that was prevented from building on their land. The court unanimously decided that the EPA rule did not apply to their property but then went much further, narrowing the agency’s authority nationwide.

Supporters cheered the ruling, saying the Obamaera Waters of the U.S. rule went too far and burdened

property owners.

Funk said pristine wetlands are the superstars of the natural infrastructure.

“Everything from mitigating downstream flooding impacts by absorbing runoff and precipitation to encouraging groundwater recharge to improve water quality and capturing sediment and other pollutants that might end up in drinking-water supplies,” he said, “and, of course, the fish and wildlife impacts.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said, “California has adopted some of the strongest laws in this country to protect our waters and the environment, and we will continue enforcing our own laws vigorously.”
