Sentinel Power Plant Gets Air Quality Review PALM DESERT, CA – Riverside County Supervisor John J. Benoit thanked the South Coast Air Quality Management District last Friday for its thorough review of 75 applications for $53 million in air pollution reduction credits from the CPV Sentinel power plant mitigation fund. “Clearly a great number of people are interested in improving air quality in the Coachella Valley. I appreciate the tremendous effort that went into submitting and evaluating so many detailed proposals,” said Benoit, a member of the AQMD board. “It appears the AQMD staff recommendations fully comply with funding guidelines regarding where

COD Accepting Basic Firefighter Academy Applications PALM DESERT, CA— College of the Desert (COD) is now accepting applications to begin a fully accredited Basic Firefighter Academy beginning January 28, 2013, at the new Roy Wilson Fire Training Center in Thousand Palms. The COD Basic Firefighter Academy is designed for working students with evening classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays and day time classes on Saturdays throughout the Spring and Fall semesters. The program is constructed to provide students with a basic knowledge of fire service operations and to provide entry-level skills required by most fire departments. College units earned can be applied to an associate’s degree. Upon successful completion of the academy, students will be eligible

to receive their State of California Firefighter I Certificate. Prerequisites to the academy include: • Minimum age of 18 to apply • Possession of a current California EMT certification • Possession of a transcript of FIT 1 (Fire Protection Organization) or college level equivalent. • Current Physical Abilities Test Certificate (Biddle or CPAT completed within one year prior to the first day of the academy) Applications are due no later than Nov. 1, and are available on the COD website www.collegeofthedesert. edu by clicking Academic Programs, Fire Technology, State Fire Marshall Training (Basic Firefighter Academy). Applications may also be picked up in person at the Public Safety Academy

these air quality improvement funds must be spent. I’m especially pleased that, thanks to the support of my fellow board members, all of this funding will stay here in the Coachella Valley.” According to legislation that Supervisor Benoit coauthored while serving in the state Senate, at least 30 percent of the mitigation funding must be used within six miles of the plant near Desert Hot Springs, and at least 30 percent of the funding must be used in environmental justice areas. The remaining 40 percent could have been spent on emission reduction projects anywhere in the AQMD multi-county coverage area. However, Supervisor

Benoit’s AQMD colleagues supported his argument that this funding should be allocated exclusively within the Coachella Valley. Benoit said he looks forward to evaluating the proposals and staff recommendations when they come before the full AQMD board. Until he has an opportunity to fully review the staff recommendations, he won’t comment on the details of any specific proposal. To review the proposals and for additional information from AQMD, use the following link: www. aqmd.gov/news1/2012/ coachellavalleyPR.htm.

STAROpinion Undecided? Will the presidential debates help you decide? I wanted to write about politics but hesitated because I don’t like politics. However, I felt the need because it’s October and we go to the polls on Nov. 6 and I’m still undecided. Personally, I don’t like politics because it’s all about personal power, influence and MONEY, and I don’t believe either side for a minute. After the first presidential debate, I was confused and asked several people, “What happened?” It seems that one guy showed up and one guy didn’t. One guy is president and the other guy wants to be. How does the outcome of these debates affect the Coachella Valley? The answer is as plain as the reconstructed nose on my face (more on that later). Elections are always about jobs, the economy, taxes and health care – certainly the last few elections have been. I’m an undecided voter, probably among the most valuable votes. In search of some answers and perspective, and before making my decision, I consulted two lifelong friends from both parties. Elizabeth Saron Milner is a free-thinking Democrat and former president of the League of Women’s Voters in Pennsylvania. Milner was matron of honor at my wedding in 2008 and her political affiliation is bluer than her silver blue hair. Milner had this to say about the debate: “Romney was on his game. It looked like he had a few Red Bulls because he appeared all speeded up. Don’t know what happened to Obama. Romney bullied him and wouldn’t let anyone speak. That’s the businessman side of him, firing people, cutting people off. He was scary. He seemed very dictatorial. Everything out of his mouth was a bold faced lie. The mention of the words ‘tax cuts’ sounded like he never heard those words before – just a lot of bold faced lies. And Jim Lehrer from KPBS just let him get away with it. Lehrer was bullied too and let the debate get out of control. “The only specific thing Romney said was that he’d eliminate funding to KPBS, firing Lehrer and Big Bird! And their talk about domestic policy was confusing. Does anyone know what Simpson Bowles is? I cover politics daily and barely knew what they were talking about. Why didn’t they talk about issues like the poor, poverty in America, women’s issues, feeding people, oh yes, Romney mentioned those on Food Stamps and the numbers. The commentators were nothing more than talking heads. Romney appeared a more frightening figure to me than ever. He changed his mind on tax cuts. He was lying through his pearly white teeth.” Then I consulted Stacy Taylor, a radio talk show host and freethinker who leans to the Right and is more read than red. Don’t

expect Taylor to be happy about the current administration because he lost his job at KGO radio and currently lives in exile in Rosarito Beach, Mexico. Here’s the bulk of what Taylor had to say: “More than 58 million Americans watched the first presidential debate. It would have been 58 million and one had President Obama been watching instead of staring at his podium. Less than 24 hours after this disaster, the meme floating around among the chattering class is that Obama appeared distracted, dispassionate, tired, bored and aloof, which is exactly how I felt after watching for 90 minutes, and it’s hard to disagree. “The best spin anyone could come up with later was that Obama was ‘professional.’ No doubt a compliment from the upper West Side or in Cambridge, but a word that roughly translates to ‘baloney artist’ in Omaha and Pittsburgh (not a direct translation). In fact, the consensus across the political spectrum was so negative

Editor’s opinion By Jackie Devereaux toward the president’s performance that pundits scrambled to outdo one another with damning metaphors. The prize went to The New York Times who likened Obama to a ‘zombie bee.’ Was this the same President Obama who famously said during the 2008 that you should never take a knife to a gunfight? “How could Obama not have brought up Romney’s recent statement that he didn’t really give a damn about the 47 percent of Americans who he and his fat cat donors consider government dependent moochers, especially after Ronmey had the gall to say during the debate, ‘The reason I’m in this race is because people are really hurting?’ How could Obama have gone 90 minutes in a debate that focused on the economy and jobs and not once mention Bain Capital? “How could the president have shined on Romney’s phony support of Medicare when Romney is on the record as supporting Paul Ryan’s plan of gutting Medicare and replacing it with a voucher system? It’s not that Obama didn’t respond to the voucher issue, it’s that he cited studies and the opinion of AARP. “In fact that’s what the president did way too much of, citing studies and the opinions of others, while Romney talked in stark terms about the ‘immorality’ of budget deficits while reciting lachrymose anecdotes of the unfortunate victims of Obama’s policies siding up to him at campaign events begging for help. “There’s a weird disconnect between watching the debate as it occurred and reading a transcript of the debate. In the written transcript, Obama comes off as rational, thoughtful and thorough, but during the debate itself, he came across as bland, defensive and wonkish. “Later, the professional liberals in the media were floating the idea that everyone knew going in that Romney would put on a strong performance and would likely win the first debate. Really? This guy who recently said, ‘I believe in an America where millions of Americans believe in an America that’s the America

millions of Americans believe in. That’s the America I love.’ The joker who’s been running around for the last six months bragging about his wife’s two Cadillacs, boasting that he likes to fire people, and saying he would have a better chance of winning the election if he were Latino, this is the guy everyone expected to win the first debate? Weeks ago, the talking heads on MSNBC were declaring the election in the bag after Romney’s 47 percent comments were leaked. “The next debate is Oct. 16 at Hofstra University on Long Island. The focus will be on foreign policy, one of Obama’s alleged strengths. Let’s hope the president bothers to show up for that one.” Are you still an undecided voter like me? I wonder who is tough enough to moderate the next presidential debate and not get run over or bullied? Shall we recruit Arnold Swartzenegger or Sylvester Stallone? Or how about Big Bird and Jimmy Carter? You choose. If you’d like to read more of Stacy Taylor’s opinions in their entirety, go to stacytaylor.com

Fall Modernism Tour “Docomomo,” no it’s not the word for “thank you” in some obscure Asian language, but unless you are an admirer of modern architecture, (think around the middle of the 20th Century), the word may just as well be. Actually, Docomomo is an anachronism for a Barcelona-based international group formed for the Documentation and Conservation of Buildings, Sites and Neighborhoods of the Modern Movement. Those visitors and residents, who look beyond the golf courses and casinos of Palm Springs and surroundings, understand that the interest of Docomomo in Desert architecture is based on the fact that the Coachella Valley is literally home to a museumquality collection of modernism that could fill a coffee-table book. For the past seven years Palm Springs has presented Modernism Week in February as a multipleday event organized to showcase some of the local modernism treasures. However, with interest of Palm Springs’ Modernism Week becoming global, it attracted Docomomo, which now sponsors a Fall Modernism Tour and learning event that serves as a logical precursor to Modernism Week. This year Docomomo’s event was Oct. 6-8. Capping off the modernism experience were double-decker architectural bus

In addition to the mobile tour, other Docomomo events included a cocktail party, awards preservation luncheon and free lectures. Who said the dry, hot desert climate wasn’t a preservative; you would be amazed. More information about February’s Modernism Week is available at modernismweek.com.

Some Walkers may choose to complete only the first half of the Walk, while others may decide to complete in the second half; that’s when the Walk joins up with the 2012 Greater Palm Springs Pride Parade. Twenty-five years ago, Anne and Kirk Douglas, along with former First Lady Betty Ford, chaired the very first Desert AIDS Walk. That year, 100,000 diagnoses of AIDS were reported. Today, about 1.1 million Americans are living with HIV; globally, the number is 34.2 million. So the walks go on. The first 24 Walks raised more than $6 million through the efforts of individual Walkers who obtained donation pledges from friends and families, in addition to significant sponsorships from community partnerships. Hopefully, the 2012 Palm Springs AIDS Walk will break all past records by raising more than $250,000 this year. To help reach this goal there

STARCommunity Living Waters Spa Celebrates Life After Breast Cancer By Jackie Devereaux DESERT HOT SPRINGS, C A – To help bring more awareness and early detection to the issue of breast cancer, a local businesswoman offers discounts to her therapeutic and spa, along with a retrospective about her battle against the deadly disease. Judy Bowman, along with her husband Jeff, own the Living Waters Spa, along Mountain View Road in Desert Hot Springs notable for their iconic neon sign “Kismet,” which was recently restored to its original beauty. The Bowman’s want to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness month by offering a 50 percent discount off all room rates for Breast Cancer survivors. All proceeds from spa services and massage treatments this month will go to Breast Cancer research. The couple invites the public to enjoy their pristine natural hot mineral spring waters, get a massage and support Breast Cancer research. Judy, who is a breast cancer survivor, shares her personal story: “In 1992 I heard the words most women dread, ‘I’m sorry, it is cancer.’” “Jeff and I were about to move 350 miles to a new job for him with our four children, ages eight to 15. We all made

Judy Bowman in 1992 appointments for routine physicals with our familiar doctors before the big move. At my exam I asked my physician whether or not I should get a mammogram; I was only 38. He hesitated but said okay. “Later on the afternoon of the test I received a call from the doctor, saying there was something on the film, and he had made an appointment for me to see a surgeon two days later. I naively was not worried, and continued working toward our move, which by now was only 10 days away. Jeff wisely suggested we stop packing until we saw the doctor. When we saw him he said he wanted to schedule a biopsy, which we were able to do that coming Monday. I was in recovery when I

heard those fateful words, ‘I’m sorry, it is cancer.’” “Those words caused our world to stop and we quickly became knowledgeable about the disease. My path became a mastectomy and ‘tram flap’ reconstruction a month later, followed by six months of chemotherapy. Jeff, my family and friends were wonderfully supportive. “Fast forward to the present time, and I can proudly say that I am a breast cancer survivor. I have been able to go along the journey with a number of friends and guests as they dealt with the disease. There’s something about the understanding you can only get from someone who has been there. “So in celebration, we would like to embrace other breast cancer survivors and offer them an amazing deal at our resort. If you are a survivor, we offer you a 50 percent discount on room rates during the month of October. Come and celebrate life with us.” Twenty years ago, Judy was diagnosed with breast cancer because of early detection. “Back in that time I was working in the computer industry and had really good health insurance,” said her husband Jeff. “Before our big

Jeff and Judy Bowman, owners of Living Waters Spa move we decided to use that insurance and get the kids and ourselves a full round of medical check-ups. After the kids were done, it was Judy’s turn and after a cursory exam where the doctor did a few pokes here and there, Judy had the wherewithal to ask if she could get a mammogram. “The doctor asked her how old she was, and she said ’38.’ The doctor said that they usually wait until age 40 but said okay. If he would have said ‘No’ Judy would have gone along with it. If we had waited…who knows,

This month’s movie “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” is just in time for Halloween and offers an optional sing-along. Promoters encourage a visit to their official costume source, Partylab, for all your Rocky Horror costume needs. If you’d rather not dress up and just be a spectator, that’s cool too. By Reno Fontana Forty-two year old Canadian, Marc Robinson, President and CEO of aFusion Realty is a man of great rarity. The business name he chose is one of the best I have ever seen. It’s memorable and unique.

It’s right up there with Google, ebay and Facebook. Here is the meaning of aFusion. The “a” stands for alpha and the first letter of the Greek alphabet. It means the first one; the beginning; the highest grade.

CEO Marc Robinson Real Estate Rock Star Look in the phone book for realtors, and “aFusion” is the top of the list. The meaning of fusion also means simply the ultimate power of the universe. Fusion is the process by which two or more atomic nuclei join together or “fuse” to form a single heavier nucleus that creates the same energy that powers the stars. When a customer comes to Robinson

to retain his services, he and the client become one and Robinson puts all his energy into their needs. When it comes to selling property, Robinson is an uber genius in the world of real estate. I don’t use that word lightly. He makes a smart phone look dumb. If he were alive today and looking for a home, Einstein would have chosen Robinson to find him a

house. You can’t get any more genius than that. Urban legend has it that a glass factory specializing in fragile products couldn’t find a suitable location on safe and stable ground. Then they met Robinson. It’s rumored he sold a 50 acre parcel on top of the San Andreas Fault because Robinson convinced them the earthquakes would shake the ingredients better than their glass making machines thereby giving them a superior glass product. I first became aware of Robinson when I was having lunch one day and overheard a telephone conversation with someone he was speaking to on his cell. He can converse apparently on any topic. It seems the person he was talking with was looking for work in a highly specialized field. Robinson told the individual on the phone he just happened to have a friend with a biotechnology company that was looking for a molecular biologist to oversee bacterial cloning for gene expression studies. What? That was my first thought. I had no understanding of what he was talking about. But my second thought was that this guy was somebody I wanted to know. So, I introduced myself, and that’s when I learned of Robinson’s real estate savvy. Anybody can sell ice to an Eskimo. Robinson can sell them Jet Ski’s and bathing suits in the dead of winter. aFusion today is a premier full service real estate company. aFusion provides not only real estate listing and sales services, but also provides the escrow service, and if needed, loan services. Fully licensed in all these areas, aFusion makes the entire real estate process, from start to finish, seamless and professional. In addition to his sales staff, Robinson maintains an architect, a contractor and a surveyor in house. When time is of the essence, and a multi-

President and CEO Marc Robinson million dollar closing facing a deadline hinges on solving a last minute unexpected problem, Robinson is there. Think Superman rushing in to save Metropolis. In a crisis situation, you can count on Robinson to ride in with a white hat. The day I interviewed Robinson for this story at the aFusion headquarters in Palm Springs, I also met a couple of people who have known and conducted business with Robinson for almost two decades. Words like honest, trustworthy, caring, intelligent and witty were all adjectives used by his friends to describe Robinson. For qualified investors, Robinson will also assist oneon-one in explaining the complicated and confusing process of buying trustee and tax sale properties. World Series pitchers make strikeouts seem easy. Super Bowl quarterbacks throw winning pinpoint touchdown passes that appear effortless. Robinson can handle every conceivable real estate scenario that might come his way because like the pitcher and quarterback, Robinson is a professional at the top of his game. After tens of thousands of hours on the real estate front lines, in good years and in lean times, Robinson remains an indomitable force in his chosen profession. Just like Elvis was to music, Robinson is to the realty business a rock star. To contact Marc Robinson, call aFusion at 760-864-8555. To contact the author, email renofontana@yahoo.com.

50 PLUSSTAR Two Easy Ways To Accomplish Any Goal Now that I (possibly) have developed a simple and inexpensive way of staying alive for many hundreds of years, I am focusing on what I can do to become healthy, happy and prosperous during all those extra years. Frankly, since I am not yet entirely sure that my method for life extension really works (after all, I am only 84 healthy years-young right now and you have every reason to be skeptical of my claims), my major new goal is to become an expert on all the life extension research taking place throughout the world. That way if someone else comes up with a better and more certain method for achieving longevity, I will be among the first to know and can inform my friends too.

costs of operating such services. The beginnings of this web site will be up on the Internet this week as www.best-lifeextension-methods.com. This brings me to the headline of this column. What can YOU learn about accomplishing your own goals from what I am presently doing to become an expert on life extension, web building, etc? The first thing I am going to do to accomplish my goals is build a team. I am certain I can find people interested in life extension to help me write a weekly Internet blog on the current research being done by life extension organizations and scientists. I am already asking some friends to build up an international list of such

Living LONGER

By Art Kunkin - Mr Life Extension Then, to accomplish my goal of becoming an expert on life extension research, I have a second goal of building a free website that will uniquely report on all the life extension research being done by organizations and individual scientists world-wide. No one else seems to be performing this useful “umbrella” function. I have come to believe that such a comprehensive information site, including a free weekly blog to update the latest news about life extension research, should be of interest to many people. There may eventually even be a life extension discussion forum on this new website as well as classes on life extension methods accessible for a small additional membership fee of say $2 per month to cover the

scientists and organizations. Would you like to be my team member? Email me. Secondly, I am looking for and already finding experienced mentors in the areas of webmastering, website building, team building and membership programs for the Internet. In other words, I am not going to undertake as a single person the huge endeavor I have in mind. I am going to make it beneficial for others to participate with me in the various aspects of this project, both as team members and mentors. My point is this: If you want to learn something new, including even starting up a new money-making business, talk to possible mentors and find one. Find someone who is experienced in what you want

www.desertstarweekly.com

to do and also wants the great pleasure of teaching their skills and knowledge to a newbie. It’s fun and beneficial to be a mentor. Having a mentor is also one of the best ways for learning anything. How can you find a mentor? Ask your friends for recommendations. Look in your local phone book. Look on the Internet. Ask the businesses you buy from to give you recommendations. Call or write possible mentors and tell them what you would like. Ask for a meeting and ask what you could possibly do for them in exchange. Everyone needs help at one time or another and perhaps you will luck out. Go on the Internet and Google “Mentoring.” There are seemingly hundreds, possibly thousands of mentoring organizations there, often free. The federal government has mentoring services. Local chambers of commerce and other local business organizations offer free mentoring. I recently downloaded a 91 page free ebook, “Success In 10 Steps” from mentoringforfree. com, an organization that seems to offer free mentoring for multi-level marketers. I will be glad to forward you a free copy of this “Success In 10 Steps” if you email artkunkin@ gmail.com. Don’t be shy. Some people get a kick out of giving advice and mentoring. They are waiting for you to find them. If you lack the self-confidence to make calls about mentoring or team-building, email me at artkunkin@gmail.com and I will email you during the month of October only the free ebook on self-hypnotism by Melvin Powers that I offered in this column last week. SelfHypnotism is a third useful tool for developing self-confidence, accomplishing your goals, creating new habits or ridding yourself of bad habits. I also invite you to attend

this Thursday’s class at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center

October 11, 2012

where I will speak about accomplishing goals and mentoring, self-hypnotism, what you can do to achieve life extension, review the Fountain of Youth Rituals and deepen the meditation considered to be the highest system of development in Tibet. This class takes place every Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center, 59700 29 Palms Highway, Joshua Tree, California. There will be a sign on the bulletin board giving directions to the Meditation Building where this class is held. Palate PleasersSTAR Ivan Flowers... Where The Chef’s Eat By Jackie Devereaux LAQUINTA , CA – Executive Chef Ivan Flowers moved from Sedona, Arizona last July bringing his awardwinning culinary talents to the Arnold Palmer restaurant in La Quinta. Chef Flowers gave the Desert Star an exclusive interview sharing his personal thoughts about the Desert community and on the culinary world here. “Sedona is a very small town, so there aren’t many dining options. I was excited to move to this area with so many restaurants. I grew up in Brooklyn, New York, so I love Italian. I am also a big fan of sushi, Asian cuisine and Mexican. As you can see, there isn’t much I don’t like. “I am a chef. I love to eat, but my absolute favorite food is authentic New York style pizza. I grew up getting four slices of cheese and a coke for a $1.00. I would fold the slice and the olive oil would run to the tip of the slice. There is

nothing like a perfect slice of NY style pizza.” I asked if being such an accomplished chef made him critical of other’s when he goes out to eat? “Absolutely not! I believe cooking for people is an act of love and an extension of the heart. I am always grateful when somebody cooks for me. Dining out is my entertainment. However, I have eaten out just a couple of times since moving here. I have been working long hours at the restaurant getting the new menu out and training the kitchen staff has consumed much of my time.” I asked when he does dine out where does he and his family go? “My wife and I went to California Pizza Kitchen on El Paseo recently. We were very excited to go. Although it is a chain, they have a wide variety of food and they do it well. Remember, we lived in Sedona, so the closest California Pizza Kitchen was

Chef Ivan Flowers of Arnold Palmer’s Restaurant in La Quinta 2 ½ hours away!” “My wife and I started with a couple of items to share. We had the Asparagus and Arugula Salad. It had perfectly cooked asparagus, arugula, sun dried tomatoes, toasted almonds and shaved parmesan. It was topped with a lemon dressing. We both really liked this dish. It is a good example of keeping it simple and letting the food speak for itself. The saltiness of the Parmesan worked perfectly with the peppery arugula. The acidity in the lemon dressing brightened the entire dish and made it pop. Next time I will get an extra wedge of lemon and squeeze it on top of this salad, just to gild the lily. “We then shared the Mediterranean Tortilla Spring Rolls. Like a good veggie quesadilla with an Italian twist. They were oozing with mozzarella and stuffed with mushrooms, eggplant, sun dried tomatoes and caramelized onion. The eggplant was perfectly cooked

and not at all bitter. The caramelized onions added a jammy sweetness that cut through the richness of the cheese. They are served with a wonderful smoky marinara sauce. I really enjoyed both starters and would order them again. “For our entrees we both had salads. I had the Caramelized Peach salad with grilled chicken. It came with a

slightly sweet white balsamic dressing. The salad had peaches, dried cranberries, red onion, toasted pecans and gorgonzola. The salad was a nice balance of sweet, salty and creamy. The gorgonzola worked perfectly with the sweetness of the peaches. I also enjoyed the mouth feel of this salad: crunchy, soft, creamy and crisp. “My wife had the Warm

Veggie salad. It came with artichoke hearts, asparagus, eggplant, red and yellow peppers, corn, sun dried tomatoes and avocado. It is served with a Dijon balsamic dressing. Of course I HAD to have a bite (or two). The warm vegetables against the cold lettuce were very nice. I really liked the addition of the avocado. It added richness to the salad. The Dijon balsamic dressing was a balance of salty and sweet. What no dessert? “No. Not this time, but I was thinking about their Red Velvet cake. I am a sucker for a good cream cheese frosting.” Where do you think you will eat next? “I am looking at some Italian restaurants and really craving a good eggplant Parmesan. Also, I’m still looking for authentic New York style pizza in the area. If anybody has a suggestion, please let me know.”

By Theda Kleinhaus Reichman named Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green), the macabre storyline is also quite amusing. Much of the humor derives from the contrast in time. Everything was prim and proper when Barnabas was buried alive in 1772, but now that he’s back among the living he discovers life in 1972 is totally different from the world he once knew. He’s also distressed to see that his grand estate has fallen into ruin and his current family is a mess. Being an honorable fellow, even though he is a vampire, Barnabas is determined to revitalize his family and their mansion to their past glory days. Unfortunately Barnabas is still haunted by the reincarnation of his former jilted lover, Angelique, who is now Collinsport’s leading citizen. In her current existence she is known as Angie and she bears a striking resemblance to his old nemesis. It seems that no one really dies, they just return century after century in a new body, but to Angie’s surprise she still has the hots for the newly resurrected Barnabas.

In one love scene, as she tries to win him back in this life, they literally bounce off the walls. The tryst is more comical than sexy and there are complications. It turns out Barnabas doesn’t want to rekindle his past lust for Angie because young David Collins’ new nanny, Victoria Winters (Bella Heathcote) is mysteriously, the mirror image of Barnabas’ one true love, Josette. Uh, oh! The “Dark Shadows” Blu-ray Combo Pack contains many special features with nine behind-the film Focus Points. They range from “Becoming Barnabas” as Johnny Depp talks about transforming himself into this infamous, undead cult character to a segment entitled “Vampires, Witches and Werewolves, Oh My!” which uncovers the method behind Tim Burton’s madness as he twists and tweaks his favorite classic movie monsters for the gothic universe of “Dark Shadows” Another fun feature is “Reliving A Decade.” It examines the 1970s from groovy bell bottoms to classic rock & roll as Barnabas finds himself in a new century so

EntertainmentSTAR Rock Greats Return With Rousing Studio Efforts Guitarist Craig Chaquico, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominee Heart and the late keyboardist Jon Lord are all the focus of new collections celebrating their original material.

Music

Worth Buying By Robert Kinsler Artist: Craig Chaquico Title: Fire Red Moon (Blind Pig Records) You might be interested in buying this if you like: Robert Cray, Steve Miller Band.

Tell me more: Blending rock, blues and jazz comes easy for Craig Chaquico, the gifted musician who first gained fame as lead guitarist and songwriter with Jefferson Starship before forging an equally-successful career as a smooth jazz solo artist. On his first-ever blues album “Fire Red Moon” (set for release on Oct. 16, 2012), Chaquico has been able to come full circle and revisit his blues-rock roots. With every track showcasing Chaquico’s virtuoso skills on the fretboard, his approach is broadened as he is joined by lead singer Noah Hunt (lead singer of the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band) on the stirring original blues tune (“Lie To Me”), as well as lead singer Eric E. Golbach on the poignant blues-rocker “Bad Woman.” Elsewhere Chaquico honors

impacted the entire family.

heroes like Albert King on an instrumental version of “Born Under a Bad Sign” and the legendary Robert Johnson with a fiery take on “Crossroads.”

Artist: Heart Title: Fanatic (Legacy) You might be interested in buying this if you like: Heart’s classic 1970s albums, Led Zeppelin. Tell me more: If there is any justice in the rock ‘n’ roll universe, Heart will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. Led by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, Heart has followed up the June 2012 release of the five-disc retrospective “Strange Euphoria” with the sterling new studio album “Fanatic.” From the prog rock-tinged “Million Miles” to the sparse blue-rocker “Skin and Bones” and the Led Zeppelin-flavored “Mashallah,” Heart picks up right where the band left off with the excellent 2010 effort “Red Velvet Car.” The real gem on the set is the mighty “Dear Old America,” chronicling the Wilsons’ father who served in World War II and Korea, and whose struggles

Jason Bonham are still mourning the loss of keyboardist-composer Jon Lord, who died on July 16, 2012 at age 71. One of Lord’s greatest works has now been released via its first-ever studio recording serving as a permanent tribute to the Leicester, England native. Many well-known rock artists have attempted to compose neo-classical work, but few have succeeded like Lord as displayed across the magnificent “Concerto for Group and Orchestra” first performed with Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1969. Fast forward more than four decades and the concerto – broken into three distinct movements – was recorded in-studio featuring the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Paul Mann with an outstanding rock cast including Lord (organ), as well as guitar heroes Joe Bonamassa, Steve Morse and Darin Vasilev. Blending progressive rock, baroque and classical music, heavy metal and even church music, Lord was able to hear and approve the final mixes on the album several weeks before he died.

STAREntertainment Barbie™ Photography Show Opens Oct. 20 PALM SPRINGS - Savage Gallery, 870 Research Drive, Palm Springs, is pleased to announce a special photography exhibition, Barbie™ Does Palm Springs, the work of Palm Springs photographer Steven Henke. Running from Oct. 20 to 31, the show features 40 limitededition prints of Barbie® (and Ken®) dolls at Palm Springs locations. Barbie™ Does Palm Springs will open with an Opening Night Reception on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 7-10 p.m., where 100 percent of all proceeds will go to benefit The LGBT Community Center of the Desert. The public is cordially invited to attend. Steven Henke’s story proves ‘it does get better.’ “I was working on a collection of Barbie photographs at well known Palm Springs locations when I was reminded that

when I was young, people made fun of me by calling me ‘Barbie Boy,’” said Steven. Henke’s career took him around the world and by the age of 40, he was working for a company where he not only was getting paid to play with Barbie — but was once again being called Barbie Boy — this time as a compliment by the team at Mattel. “When people look at my work, I hope they feel happy and optimistic because no matter what’s happening, ‘it does get better.’” By choosing The Center as the beneficiary of the exhibition, Henke is excited to be able to give back to the community. “As the beneficiary of Barbie™ Does Palm Springs, we are thrilled to be a part of it,” said John O’Connor, Executive Director of The Center.

Barbie™ Does Palm Springs will also hold an online auction at leading online charity auction site, Charitybuzz.com beginning on Oct. 10 and running

AutomotiveSTAR 2013 Hyundai Equus Big car, Low price

The Hyundai Equus is a very interesting car. It is easily as luxurious as the big Mercedes-Benz S500 and Lexus LS460-L, yet it costs thousands less and offers something neither rival can match - low-key luxury that is nearly anonymous. In today’s economy, invisible luxury is very appealing to some owners, and the Equus delivers abundant luxury without the baggage of a luxury “brand.” This category of car is known as the “personal limousine.” Since stretch limousines these days are for proms and bachelorette parties, large luxury sedans like this are the preferred luxury transportation for executives and affluent households. Equus features Hyundai’s most powerful engine ever, the 429-hp direct-injected 5.0-liter Tau V8 engine, and an 8-speed automatic transmission. Equus offers first-rate ride and handling characteristics, thanks to its electronicallycontrolled air suspension that gracefully tackles the wide variety of road surfaces drivers face every day. As expected for a car of this caliber, the Equus is technically advanced and it contains every cutting edge automotive gizmo. But the real treat is inside the car where every occupant is surrounded in pure luxury and top-quality materials. It’s an easy car to feel right at home in - for the busy executive as well as the couple heading out on the town. The leather upholstery, Microfiber suede headliner, natural wood trim and leather-wrapped Frenchstitched instrument panel showcase the richness of the Equus interior. The seats are fully adjustable with plenty of width and support. Thermoelectric devices located in the seat backs and bottom cushions provide control for heating, cooling and humidity. There is ample leg and head room for drivers more than six-feet tall and a massaging driver seat. In fact, Equus has more leg, head and shoulder room in the front and rear seats than the Lexus LS460. Equus is offered in two configurations, Equus Signature and Equus Ultimate (tested),

www.desertstarweekly.com

both are lavishly contented. Equus Signature features the 5.0-liter Tau V8 engine, a 608-watt Lexicon audio system with 17 speakers, electronically controlled air suspension with continuous damping control, Vehicle Stability Management with pre-collision warning, Smart Cruise Control, HID headlamps, front and rear parking assistance system with rearview camera, premium leather seating, Microfiber suede headliner, driver seat massage, heated and cooled front seats, wood and heated leather steering wheel, and numerous other premium technologies and features. The Equus Ultimate adds features typically found only in low-volume special-order luxury sedans with six-figure price tags, including a forward-view parking and cornering camera, power trunk lid, reclining rear seats with powered headrests, cooled rear seats, passenger side rear seat massage and leg support, rear seat refrigerator and a rear seat entertainment system. Equus Ultimate takes the luxury foundation of the Equus Signature and enhances it with a package of highend amenities in this price class. In the rear, the poweradjustable right-side seat provides the passenger with a generous 84 degrees of leg support, with the capability to move the front passenger seat forward and out of the way for full leg extension. The best seats in the house are in the back of the Equus Ultimate, further upgraded by an eight-inch LCD screen, which plays DVDs for rear-seat passengers, as well as demonstrate audio features and report on HVAC status. The monitor can be controlled from the rear console, which also houses the remote control seat massage function. These controls activate the heated and cooled rear seats and the rear console refrigerator. Pound-for-pound, the Hyundai Equus is a difficult package to beat. Pricing starts at $59,250 Rivals are the Mercedes-Benz S550 and Lexus LS460L. For more information, see your local Hyundai dealer or visit HyundaiUSA.com By Vince Bodiford TheWeekendDrive.com

The best side of Libra is seen in their polite manner, their ability to charm and their desire for justice to the underdog. The key is to know how to work on the delicate balances in Life, when to behave with diplomacy, to display empathy and tolerance and, when to let go by leaving justice in the hands of the Universe. For All Signs: Celebrate this month with respect, action towards the ethers or the air around you, air within you; experience the transformational power of Pramayama, (breath control, breath techniques) found in Yoga. Best Sacred Geometry: Octahedron (Air). Best Yantra: The colors Orange.

Oct. 15 New Moon in Libra:

This is a good time for you to meditate on what you desire to have come into your Life. New opportunities arrive just in time, so be ready. Expansion and luck come from learning higher consciousness. Depending on where you place your focus, there is where the success ratio begins. Begin with your heart’s intention. relationships that relate to both personal and business. The key is found in both goals and in the associations, “What can you do to bring more beauty, balance and harmony into your Life and into the world?” – Rumi. The Best: With positive intention, you’ll be too busy to worry about the mundane. Focus on the big picture. For Aries: You libido rises. Be careful not to rush, trip over your tongue or step on toes. Instead, consider a short journey and explore. For Libra: You may feel at odds with people born under Fire signs, as they may seem pushy or impatient. Featured Artist at Joshua Tree Roots Festival - Howlin’ Rain JOSHUA TREE, CA Howlin’ Rain headlines the 7th Annual Joshua Tree Roots Music Festival Sunday from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Unapologetically influenced by the strong but easygoing grooves of West Coast ‘70s rock, Howlin Rain represented something of a change of pace for guitarist and singer Ethan Miller, who previously fronted the psychedelic noise rock ensemble Comets on Fire. After the recording of Comets on Fire’s final album, Avatar, in 2006, Miller was eager to explore the more melodic direction the group began pursuing, and with bassist Ian Gradek (who has known Miller since high school) and drummer John Moloney (a member of the

like-minded band Sunburned Hand of the Man), he formed a new band, Howlin Rain, and began work on their first album. The independent Birdman Records signed Howlin Rain and released their self-titled debut in 2006, while the band hit the road as an opening act for Queens of the Stone Age, with guitarist Mike Jackson beefing their lineup on-stage. After touring behind the group’s album, Moloney returned to Sunburned Hand of the Man, and while writing material for the second Howlin Rain album, Miller assembled a new version of the band. Jackson joined Miller and Gradek as a full-time member, alongside new recruits Joel Robinow (ex-Drunk Horse)

on keyboards, horns, guitar, and backing vocals; Eli Eckert (also of Drunk Horse) on guitar and bass, and Garrett Goddard (of Cuts and Colossal Yes) on drums. Rick Ruben, a noted fan of classic ‘70s rock, was impressed with the material for Howlin Rain’s second album and 2008’s Magnificent Fiend was jointly released by Birdman and Ruben’s American Recordings imprint. The band released the digital-only “12” and “The Good Life” in 2010, followed by a limited vinyl release the following year. Also in 2010 Belle & Sebastian selected them to perform at the second Bowlie Weekender in the U.K. (produced and presented by All Tomorrow’s Parties). Howlin Rain subsequently

recorded their third fulllength, “The Russian Wilds” which was co-produced by the band and Tim Green

By Angela Edmondson PALM SPRINGS, CA - As a professional hair dresser I must hear this question everyday. There are many answers to this question. But I wont get in to the “science” behind hair growth just into what you can do to help your hair grow. Vitamins: Are you taking BIOTIN? Biotin is the ONLY known supplement to actually help promote hair growth. Everyone and their mother has told you to take anything from a multi-vitamin to taking prenatal pills, while those will help, why not take the main ingredient right from the source? Biotin if taken daily can help increase your hair and nail growth significantly (now I am not saying over night you will have a full head of long hair, but over time you will see significant difference in your hair growth. You can pick up biotin at you local drugstore it is an over the counter vitamin that is under $10.00. Of course check with your doctor that is safe to take

with other medications. Haircut: I know that sounds silly right? Why would I get a haircut if I want my hair to grow, but a good hair cut twice a year and a trim every 8 to 10 weeks will help keep your hair healthy and while your hair may be growing out in the roots you may have split ends or breakage. There for it is breaking of before it

becomes length. So cutting off those split ends will help your hair stay healthy. Hair care: Take note

www.desertstarweekly.com

of how you style your hair. Are you flat iron or curling your hair everyday? Then you need make sure you are using products that protect your hair from heat, also you should be adding that regular trim to your regiment if you heat style everyday because your ends tend to become a little more damaged. If you are in the sun everyday make sure you hair is getting plenty of moisture. Just like our body needs water and moisture so does our hair. A good deep condition added into your hair regiment is a great way to introduce moisture to out hair. Try to find products that have sun screen in them for your hair if you are going to be in the pool. Take care of you hair, see a professional stylist if you have any questions on hair growth. STARSchools Sunline Transit Holds Key To Higher Education In DHS By Stan Christensen, Chaparral Staff Reporter Desert Hot Springs, CA - If you need to take the Sun Line Transit System from Desert Hot Springs to The College of the Desert, be prepared for an early rising, critical timing, and a long ride home when the long day is done. Such is the academic life for any student from DHS requiring public transportation services, according to the Director of Sun line Transit Agency

Planning Department, Joe Forgiarini. “There is no proposal being considered at this time regarding a Sun line Shuttle from Desert Hot Springs directly to the College of the Desert campus.” When asked who could make such a proposal, Forgiarini said that basically anybody could write to the Sun line Transit Customer Service department and make the proposal. Sun line Transit would then study and assess the situation with a number of factors in consideration, and render a decision.

DHS students could also petition Sun line through their official College of the Desert area Trustee, Chuck Hayden, to propose that the shuttle be again considered. Jennifer Braun, volunteer Ambassador of the Desert Hot Springs Chamber Of Commerce, is aware of the “time consuming challenges” of the present Sun line services. “It takes up the time that you could serve in a part-time job. With transfers, the present system consumes up to four hours of each day round trip.” “A

Sunline Transit Bus Sun line Direct shuttle could save up to two of those hours per day; a great incentive for even those who drive their own vehicles to the campus, leaving more room for parking, saving students

the expenses of gasoline, maintenance, insurance, and public safety,” Braun said. Of 9,852 enrolled student population, 802 students of the Palm Desert College of the Desert campus

are from Desert Hot Springs. Many have asked why there is such neglect of student services to DHS when The College of the Desert is partners with Sun line Transit Agency.
