Sentinel Power Plant Gets Air Quality Review PALM DESERT, CA – Riverside County Supervisor John J. Benoit thanked the South Coast Air Quality Management District last Friday for its thorough review of 75 applications for $53 million in air pollution reduction credits from the CPV Sentinel power plant mitigation fund.

“Clearly a great number of people are interested in improving air quality in the Coachella Valley. I appreciate the tremendous effort that went into submitting and evaluating so many detailed proposals,” said Benoit, a member of the AQMD board. “It appears the AQMD staff recommendations fully comply with funding guidelines regarding where

COD Accepting Basic Firefighter Academy Applications PALM DESERT, CA— College of the Desert (COD) is now accepting applications to begin a fully accredited Basic Firefighter Academy beginning January 28, 2013, at the new Roy Wilson Fire Training Center in Thousand Palms. The COD Basic Firefighter Academy is designed for working students with evening classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays and day time classes on Saturdays throughout the Spring and Fall semesters.

The program is constructed to provide students with a basic knowledge of fire service operations and to provide entry-level skills required by most fire departments.

College units earned can be applied to an associate’s degree. Upon successful completion of the academy, students will be eligible

to receive their State of California Firefighter I Certificate.

Prerequisites to the academy include: • Minimum age of 18 to apply • Possession of a current California EMT certification • Possession of a transcript of FIT 1 (Fire Protection Organization) or college level equivalent.

• Current Physical Abilities Test Certificate (Biddle or CPAT completed within one year prior to the first day of the academy) Applications are due no later than Nov. 1, and are available on the COD website www.collegeofthedesert. edu by clicking Academic Programs, Fire Technology, State Fire Marshall Training (Basic Firefighter Academy).

According to legislation that Supervisor Benoit coauthored while serving in the state Senate, at least 30 percent of the mitigation funding must be used within six miles of the plant near Desert Hot Springs, and at least 30 percent of the funding must be used in environmental justice areas.

The remaining 40 percent could have been spent on emission reduction projects anywhere in the AQMD multi-county coverage area. However, Supervisor

Benoit’s AQMD colleagues supported his argument that this funding should be allocated exclusively within the Coachella Valley.

Benoit said he looks forward to evaluating the proposals and staff recommendations when they come before the full AQMD board. Until he has an opportunity to fully review the staff recommendations, he won’t comment on the details of any specific proposal.

STAROpinion Undecided? Will the presidential debates help you decide?

I wanted to write about politics but hesitated because I don’t like politics. However, I felt the need because it’s October and we go to the polls on Nov. 6 and I’m still undecided. Personally, I don’t like politics because it’s all about personal power, influence and MONEY, and I don’t believe either side for a minute.

After the first presidential debate, I was confused and asked several people, “What happened?” It seems that one guy showed up and one guy didn’t. One guy is president and the other guy wants to be. How does the outcome of these debates affect the Coachella Valley? The answer is as plain as the reconstructed nose on my face (more on that later).

Elections are always about jobs, the economy, taxes and health care – certainly the last few elections have been. I’m an undecided voter, probably among the most valuable votes. In search of some answers and perspective, and before making my decision, I consulted two lifelong friends from both parties.

Elizabeth Saron Milner is a free-thinking Democrat and former president of the League of Women’s Voters in Pennsylvania. Milner was matron of honor at my wedding in 2008 and her political affiliation is bluer than her silver blue hair. Milner had this to say about the debate: “Romney was on his game. It looked like he had a few Red Bulls because he appeared all speeded up. Don’t know what happened to Obama. Romney bullied him and wouldn’t let anyone speak. That’s the businessman side of him, firing people, cutting people off. He was scary. He seemed very dictatorial. Everything out of his mouth was a bold faced lie. The mention of the words ‘tax cuts’ sounded like he never heard those words before – just a lot of bold faced lies. And Jim Lehrer from KPBS just let him get away with it. Lehrer was bullied too and let the debate get out of control.

“The only specific thing Romney said was that he’d eliminate funding to KPBS, firing Lehrer and Big Bird! And their talk about domestic policy was confusing. Does anyone know what Simpson Bowles is? I cover politics daily and barely knew what they were talking about. Why didn’t they talk about issues like the poor, poverty in America, women’s issues, feeding people, oh yes, Romney mentioned those on Food Stamps and the numbers. The commentators were nothing more than talking heads. Romney appeared a more frightening figure to me than ever. He changed his mind on tax cuts. He was lying through his pearly white teeth.”

Then I consulted Stacy Taylor, a radio talk show host and freethinker who leans to the Right and is more read than red. Don’t

expect Taylor to be happy about the current administration because he lost his job at KGO radio and currently lives in exile in Rosarito Beach, Mexico. Here’s the bulk of what Taylor had to say: “More than 58 million Americans watched the first presidential debate. It would have been 58 million and one had President Obama been watching instead of staring at his podium.

Less than 24 hours after this disaster, the meme floating around among the chattering class is that Obama appeared distracted, dispassionate, tired, bored and aloof, which is exactly how I felt after watching for 90 minutes, and it’s hard to disagree.

“The best spin anyone could come up with later was that Obama was ‘professional.’ No doubt a compliment from the upper West Side or in Cambridge, but a word that roughly translates to ‘baloney artist’ in Omaha and Pittsburgh (not a direct translation).

The prize went to The New York Times who likened Obama to a ‘zombie bee.’ Was this the same President Obama who famously said during the 2008 that you should never take a knife to a gunfight?

“How could Obama not have brought up Romney’s recent statement that he didn’t really give a damn about the 47 percent of Americans who he and his fat cat donors consider government dependent moochers, especially after Ronmey had the gall to say during the debate, ‘The reason I’m in this race is because people are really hurting?’ How could Obama have gone 90 minutes in a debate that focused on the economy and jobs and not once mention Bain Capital?

“How could the president have shined on Romney’s phony support of Medicare when Romney is on the record as supporting Paul Ryan’s plan of gutting Medicare and replacing it with a voucher system? It’s not that Obama didn’t respond to the voucher issue, it’s that he cited studies and the opinion of AARP. “In fact that’s what the president did way too much of, citing studies and the opinions of others, while Romney talked in stark terms about the ‘immorality’ of budget deficits while reciting lachrymose anecdotes of the unfortunate victims of Obama’s policies siding up to him at campaign events begging for help.

“There’s a weird disconnect between watching the debate as it occurred and reading a transcript of the debate. In the written transcript, Obama comes off as rational, thoughtful and thorough, but during the debate itself, he came across as bland, defensive and wonkish.

“Later, the professional liberals in the media were floating the idea that everyone knew going in that Romney would put on a strong performance and would likely win the first debate.

Really? This guy who recently said, ‘I believe in an America where millions of Americans believe in an America that’s the America

millions of Americans believe in. That’s the America I love.’ The joker who’s been running around for the last six months bragging about his wife’s two Cadillacs, boasting that he likes to fire people, and saying he would have a better chance of winning the election if he were Latino, this is the guy everyone expected to win the first debate? Weeks ago, the talking heads on MSNBC were declaring the election in the bag after Romney’s 47 percent comments were leaked.

“The next debate is Oct. 16 at Hofstra University on Long Island. The focus will be on foreign policy, one of Obama’s alleged strengths. Let’s hope the president bothers to show up for that one.”

Are you still an undecided voter like me? I wonder who is tough enough to moderate the next presidential debate and not get run over or bullied? Shall we recruit Arnold Swartzenegger or Sylvester Stallone? Or how about Big Bird and Jimmy Carter?

PUBLIC SAFETY:

From Aug. 2011 to Aug. 2012, major crime (part 1 crime) has dropped nearly 46.5% in Desert Hot Springs; due in part to an increase in community policing and neighborhood watch programs. This is an effort by the City, in association with community activism, to reduce crime and create a safe environment for families in Desert Hot Springs.

CODE ENFORCEMENT:

City of Desert Hot Springs, working in conjunction with local law enforcement agencies, has undertaken initiatives to either destroy, remove or close buildings/structures which are a haven for gang-related activities.

Enforcement has also included the arrests of key suspects who are responsible for destructive and unsightly graffiti.

Fall Modernism Tour “Docomomo,” no it’s not the word for “thank you” in some obscure Asian language, but unless you are an admirer of modern architecture, (think around the middle of the 20th Century), the word may just as well be.

Actually, Docomomo is an anachronism for a Barcelona-based international group formed for the Documentation and Conservation of Buildings, Sites and Neighborhoods of the Modern Movement. Those visitors and residents, who look beyond the golf courses and casinos of Palm Springs and surroundings, understand that the interest of Docomomo in Desert architecture is based on the fact that the Coachella Valley is literally home to a museumquality collection of modernism that could fill a coffee-table book.

For the past seven years Palm Springs has presented Modernism Week in February as a multipleday event organized to showcase some of the local modernism treasures. However, with interest of Palm Springs’ Modernism Week becoming global, it attracted Docomomo, which now sponsors a Fall Modernism Tour and learning event that serves as a logical precursor to Modernism Week.

This year Docomomo’s event was Oct. 6-8. Capping off the modernism experience were double-decker architectural bus

tours that depart from the Palm Springs Hilton Hotel. Some of the places visited on the $75 bus tour were houses once owned by Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and Cary Grant.

In addition to the mobile tour, other Docomomo events included a cocktail party, awards preservation luncheon and free lectures.

Who said the dry, hot desert climate wasn’t a preservative; you would be amazed.

Palm Springs AIDS Walk and Pride Parade

will b e two sections of the Palm Springs AIDS Walk this year.

Some Walkers may choose to complete only the first half of the Walk, while others may decide to complete in the second half; that’s when the Walk joins up with the 2012 Greater Palm Springs Pride Parade.

Registration for the Walk begins at 7:30 am in Nov. 4 at the Kaiser facility located at 1100 N. Palm Canyon, (corner of Tachevah), in Palm Springs.

Twenty-five years ago, Anne and Kirk Douglas, along with former First Lady Betty Ford, chaired the very first Desert AIDS Walk. That year, 100,000 diagnoses of AIDS were reported. Today, about 1.1 million Americans are living with HIV; globally, the number is 34.2 million.

So the walks go on. The first 24 Walks raised more than $6 million through the efforts of individual Walkers who obtained donation pledges from friends and families, in addition to significant sponsorships from community partnerships.

Hopefully, the 2012 Palm Springs AIDS Walk will break all past records by raising more than $250,000 this year.

By Jackie Devereaux DESERT HOT SPRINGS, C A – To help bring more awareness and early detection to the issue of breast cancer, a local businesswoman offers discounts to her therapeutic and spa, along with a retrospective about her battle against the deadly disease.

Judy Bowman, along with her husband Jeff, own the Living Waters Spa, along Mountain View Road in Desert Hot Springs notable for their iconic neon sign “Kismet,” which was recently restored to its original beauty.

The Bowman’s want to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness month by offering a 50 percent discount off all room rates for Breast Cancer survivors. All proceeds from spa services and massage treatments this month will go to Breast Cancer research. The couple invites the public to enjoy their pristine natural hot mineral spring waters, get a massage and support Breast Cancer research.

Judy, who is a breast cancer survivor, shares her personal story: “In 1992 I heard the words most women dread, ‘I’m sorry, it is cancer.’”

“Jeff and I were about to move 350 miles to a new job for him with our four children, ages eight to 15. We all made

Judy Bowman in 1992 appointments for routine physicals with our familiar doctors before the big move. At my exam I asked my physician whether or not I should get a mammogram; I was only 38.

He hesitated but said okay.

“Later on the afternoon of the test I received a call from the doctor, saying there was something on the film, and he had made an appointment for me to see a surgeon two days later. I naively was not worried, and continued working toward our move, which by now was only 10 days away. Jeff wisely suggested we stop packing until we saw the doctor. When we saw him he said he wanted to schedule a biopsy, which we were able to do that coming Monday.

I was in recovery when I

heard those fateful words, ‘I’m sorry, it is cancer.’”

“Those words caused our world to stop and we quickly became knowledgeable about the disease. My path became a mastectomy and ‘tram flap’ reconstruction a month later, followed by six months of chemotherapy. Jeff, my family and friends were wonderfully supportive.

“Fast forward to the present time, and I can proudly say that I am a breast cancer survivor. I have been able to go along the journey with a number of friends and guests as they dealt with the disease. There’s something about the understanding you can only get from someone who has been there.

“So in celebration, we would like to embrace other breast cancer survivors and offer them an amazing deal at our resort. If you are a survivor, we offer you a 50 percent discount on room rates during the month of October. Come and celebrate life with us.”

Twenty years ago, Judy was diagnosed with breast cancer because of early detection. “Back in that time I was working in the computer industry and had really good health insurance,” said her husband Jeff. “Before our big

CommunitySTAR New Cinemania Events to Benefit the LGBT Center of the Desert

By Jackie Devereaux PALM SPRINGS, CA – If you visit Snapshot Palm Springs on Friday, Oct. 12 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. for a one night only screening of the cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” it surely won’t be a typical movie night.

Cinemania, a monthly showing of classic films with a party atmosphere will benefit the LGBT Center of the Desert.

Promoters are excited to present a new monthly happening in the Desert with the inaugural month’s movie showing a warm-up to the Halloween season. Patrons will enjoy a partially hosted

bar available the entire evening with $5 cocktails and soft drinks plus optional delicious boxed picnic meals from Cello’s Bistro’s new lunch venue “Cello’s Pantry.” It’s indoor “lawn” seating, so bring-yourown blanket or lawn chair.

Snapshot’s 4,000 square foot facility located south of the Palm Springs International Airport, off Ramon and Douglas Way, is a print and commercial photography production site that offers use for specialty parties and events. This is the first of what promoters hope will be a series once a month, said Brian Vatcher promoter for Snapshot Palm Springs.

“The idea is to do this

kind of thing once a month.

The venue can hold up to 350 people and half those tickets have already been sold,” Vatcher said.

This month’s movie “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” is just in time for Halloween and offers an optional sing-along.

Center Kicks Off First Annual COD Latino Film Festival

PALM DESERT, CA—The Marks Art Center at College of the Desert (COD) will be hosting a film screening on Wednesday Oct. 10, at 6 p.m., to kick off the inaugural year of the COD Latino Film Festival.

Scheduled in conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month, the first screening addresses contemporary art in Latino culture. Director/producer Roberto Oregel and mural painter Eloy Torrez will be visiting from Los Angeles for a screening of the documentary Eloy Take Two, and Gronk’s Tormenta: A Method, with a Q&A afterward.

The COD Latino Film Festival is a collaborative project, initiated by English instructor Jay Lewenstein and his COD Friends of the Earth group. This first screening is made possible by the support of COD’s Diversity Council and the

Office of Student Life.

Urban legend has it that a glass factory specializing in fragile products couldn’t find a suitable location on safe and stable ground. Then they met Robinson. Look on the Internet. Ask the businesses you buy from to give you recommendations. Call or write possible mentors and tell them what you would like. Ask for a meeting and ask what you could possibly do for them in exchange. Everyone needs help at one time or another and perhaps you will luck out.

Go on the Internet and Google “Mentoring.” There are seemingly hundreds, possibly thousands of mentoring organizations there, often free. The federal government has mentoring services. Local chambers of commerce and other local business organizations offer free mentoring.

Chef Flowers gave the Desert Star an exclusive interview sharing his personal thoughts about the Desert community and on the culinary world here.

“Sedona is a very small town, so there aren’t many dining options. I was excited to move to this area with so many restaurants. I grew up in Brooklyn, New York, so I love Italian. I am also a big fan of sushi, Asian cuisine and Mexican. As you can see, there isn’t much I don’t like.

“I am a chef. I love to eat, but my absolute favorite food is authentic New York style pizza. I grew up getting four slices of cheese and a coke for a $1.00. I would fold the slice and the olive oil would run to the tip of the slice. There is

nothing like a perfect slice of NY style pizza.”

I asked if being such an accomplished chef made him critical of other’s when he goes out to eat?

“Absolutely not! I believe cooking for people is an act of love and an extension of the heart. I am always grateful when somebody cooks for me. Dining out is my entertainment. However, I have eaten out just a couple of times since moving here.

“My wife and I went to California Pizza Kitchen on El Paseo recently. We were very excited to go. Although it is a chain, they have a wide variety of food and they do it well. Remember, we lived in Sedona, so the closest California Pizza Kitchen was

“My wife and I started with a couple of items to share. We had the Asparagus and Arugula Salad. It had perfectly cooked asparagus, arugula, sun dried tomatoes, toasted almonds and shaved parmesan. It was topped with a lemon dressing. We both really liked this dish. It is a good example of keeping it simple and letting the food speak for itself. The saltiness of the Parmesan worked perfectly with the peppery arugula. The acidity in the lemon dressing brightened the entire dish and made it pop. Next time I will get an extra wedge of lemon and squeeze it on top of this salad, just to gild the lily.

“We then shared the Mediterranean Tortilla Spring Rolls. Like a good veggie quesadilla with an Italian twist. They were oozing with mozzarella and stuffed with mushrooms, eggplant, sun dried tomatoes and caramelized onion. The eggplant was perfectly cooked

and not at all bitter. The caramelized onions added a jammy sweetness that cut through the richness of the cheese. They are served with a wonderful smoky marinara sauce. I really enjoyed both starters and would order them again.

“For our entrees we both had salads. I had the Caramelized Peach salad with grilled chicken. It came with a

slightly sweet white balsamic dressing. The salad had peaches, dried cranberries, red onion, toasted pecans and gorgonzola. The salad was a nice balance of sweet, salty and creamy. The gorgonzola worked perfectly with the sweetness of the peaches. I also enjoyed the mouth feel of this salad: crunchy, soft, creamy and crisp.

“My wife had the Warm

Veggie salad. It came with artichoke hearts, asparagus, eggplant, red and yellow peppers, corn, sun dried tomatoes and avocado. It is served with a Dijon balsamic dressing. Of course I HAD to have a bite (or two). The warm vegetables against the cold lettuce were very nice. I really liked the addition of the avocado. It added richness to the salad. The Dijon balsamic dressing was a balance of salty and sweet.

What no dessert? “No. Not this time, but I was thinking about their Red Velvet cake. I am a sucker for a good cream cheese frosting.”

Where do you think you will eat next? “I am looking at some Italian restaurants and really craving a good eggplant Parmesan. Also, I’m still looking for authentic New York style pizza in the area. If anybody has a suggestion, please let me know.”

Dogs and a few cats received these blessing first as a group and then each animal was blessed individually.

Much of the humor derives from the contrast in time. Everything was prim and proper when Barnabas was buried alive in 1772, but now that he’s back among the living he discovers life in 1972 is totally different from the world he once knew.

He’s also distressed to see that his grand estate has fallen into ruin and his current family is a mess. Being an honorable fellow, even though he is a vampire, Barnabas is determined to revitalize his family and their mansion to their past glory days.

Unfortunately Barnabas is still haunted by the reincarnation of his former jilted lover, Angelique, who is now Collinsport’s leading citizen. In her current existence she is known as Angie and she bears a striking resemblance to his old nemesis.

It seems that no one really dies, they just return century after century in a new body, but to Angie’s surprise she still has the hots for the newly resurrected Barnabas.

In one love scene, as she tries to win him back in this life, they literally bounce off the walls. The tryst is more comical than sexy and there are complications. It turns out Barnabas doesn’t want to rekindle his past lust for Angie because young David Collins’ new nanny, Victoria Winters (Bella Heathcote) is mysteriously, the mirror image of Barnabas’ one true love, Josette. Jason Bonham are still mourning the loss of keyboardist-composer Jon Lord, who died on July 16, 2012 at age 71. One of Lord’s greatest works has now been released via its first-ever studio recording serving as a permanent tribute to the Leicester, England native. Many well-known rock artists have attempted to compose neo-classical work, but few have succeeded like Lord as displayed across the magnificent “Concerto for Group and Orchestra” first performed with Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1969. Fast forward more than four decades and the concerto – broken into three distinct movements – was recorded in-studio featuring the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Paul Mann with an outstanding rock cast including Lord (organ), as well as guitar heroes Joe Bonamassa, Steve Morse and Darin Vasilev. Featured Artist at Joshua Tree Roots Festival - Howlin’ Rain JOSHUA TREE, CA Howlin’ Rain headlines the 7th Annual Joshua Tree Roots Music Festival Sunday from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Unapologetically influenced by the strong but easygoing grooves of West Coast ‘70s rock, Howlin Rain represented something of a change of pace for guitarist and singer Ethan Miller, who previously fronted the psychedelic noise rock ensemble Comets on Fire.

After the recording of Comets on Fire’s final album, Avatar, in 2006, Miller was eager to explore the more melodic direction the group began pursuing, and with bassist Ian Gradek (who has known Miller since high school) and drummer John Moloney (a member of the

like-minded band Sunburned Hand of the Man), he formed a new band, Howlin Rain, and began work on their first album.

The independent Birdman Records signed Howlin Rain and released their self-titled debut in 2006, while the band hit the road as an opening act for Queens of the Stone Age, with guitarist Mike Jackson beefing their lineup on-stage. After touring behind the group’s album, Moloney returned to Sunburned Hand of the Man, and while writing material for the second Howlin Rain album, Miller assembled a new version of the band.

Jackson joined Miller and Gradek as a full-time member, alongside new recruits Joel Robinow (ex-Drunk Horse)

on keyboards, horns, guitar, and backing vocals; Eli Eckert (also of Drunk Horse) on guitar and bass, and Garrett Goddard (of Cuts and Colossal Yes) on drums. Rick Ruben, a noted fan of classic ‘70s rock, was impressed with the material for Howlin Rain’s second album and 2008’s Magnificent Fiend was jointly released by Birdman and Ruben’s American Recordings imprint.

The band released the digital-only “12” and “The Good Life” in 2010, followed by a limited vinyl release the following year. Also in 2010 Belle & Sebastian selected them to perform at the second Bowlie Weekender in the U.K. (produced and presented

by All Tomorrow’s Parties).

recorded their third fulllength, “The Russian Wilds” which was co-produced by the band and Tim Green

Howlin’ Rain at Joshua Tree Roots Festival and released by American Recordings/Birdman in early 2012.

Benoit announced the selection of Guillermo “Bill” Sanchez Jr., 38, a retail development manager and Coachella Planning Commissioner, as his appointee to the Riverside County Planning Commission last week. “ P l a n n i n g commissioners have the crucial role of carefully considering projects in the unincorporated areas of Riverside County and evaluating how they fit into the current and long term direction of the county,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit.

“Mr. Sanchez brings valuable career experience and service as a planning commissioner to this demanding position.”

Sanchez is a principal at CSG Retail Management in Indio, managing the daily operations of retail shopping centers. He has extensive experience as a

planning commissioner with six years on the City of Coachella Planning Commission, including three years as chairman, elected by his fellow commissioners.

He has also been a project manager for commercial developments.

A longtime Coachella Valley resident, Sanchez was born in Indio, graduated from Coachella Valley High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in business a d m i n i s t ra t i o n f ro m California State University Long Beach. He resides in Indio with his wife of 12 years, Myra, and two daughters.

STARSchools Sunline Transit Holds Key To Higher Education In DHS

By Stan Christensen, Chaparral Staff Reporter Desert Hot Springs, CA - If you need to take the Sun Line Transit System from Desert Hot Springs to The College of the Desert, be prepared for an early rising, critical timing, and a long ride home when the long day is done.

Such is the academic life for any student from DHS requiring public transportation services, according to the Director of Sun line Transit Agency

Planning Department, Joe Forgiarini. “There is no proposal being considered at this time regarding a Sun line Shuttle from Desert Hot Springs directly to the College of the Desert campus.” When asked who could make such a proposal, Forgiarini said that basically anybody could write to the Sun line Transit Customer Service department and make the proposal. Sun line Transit would then study and assess the situation with a number of factors in consideration, and render a decision.

DHS students could also petition Sun line through their official College of the Desert area Trustee, Chuck Hayden, to propose that the shuttle be again considered.

Jennifer Braun, volunteer Ambassador of the Desert Hot Springs Chamber Of Commerce, is aware of the “time consuming challenges” of the present Sun line services.

“It takes up the time that you could serve in a part-time job. With transfers, the present system consumes up to four hours of each day round trip.” “A

Street Closure Notice for Parade of Planes in Palm Springs More than 80 airplanes will taxi down the streets of Palm Springs for a “Parade of Planes” starting from the Palm Springs International Airport to the Palm Springs Convention Center. The aircraft will be on display outside and

inside the venue for the 2012 Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) Aviation Summit, one of the industry’s largest aviation tradeshow and conventions, scheduled for Oct. 11-13 at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

The street closure schedule is expected to be as follows:

Flying Tigers in Palm Springs Friday, Oct. 12

On Saturday, Oct. 13 beginning at 2:30 p.m. the planes will return to the Airport. This return route is different from the one the planes will travel on Wednesday. Amado Road will be closed from Avenida Caballeros to Sunrise Way; Sunrise Way will be closed from Amado Road to Alejo RoadAlejo road will be closed from Sunrise Way to the airport.

The parade is expected to start at 3 pm and last approximately 2 ½ hours.

The streets will reopen at approximately 6 p.m.

During the AOPA convention, the planes will be parked on the streets around the Convention Center including Avenida Caballeros, Amado Road, and Alvarado Road, portions of which will be closed from Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 8AM

through Saturday, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. Access to Margarita’s Restaurant and the Palm Springs Unified School District will be available by turning north onto Avenida Caballeros from Tahquitz Canyon Way. Additionally, Alvarado access

will be available for Plaza Villa residents from Andreas From Oct. 10-15, Kirk Douglas Way, just south of the Palm Springs International Airport, will be closed to all vehicle traffic to accommodate AOPA aircraft parking.

Travelers should use the El Cielo entrance to access the Airport.
