Our Elderly Waiver case manager works with Aging Resources, the local DHS office and Iowa Medicaid Enterprises to help seniors access services to enable them to safely remain in their own homes. Outreach education and health screenings are provided at Warren County Congregate Meal sites and can be provided to civic organizations or groups. The Differences Between Bacteria and Viruses

Although bacteria and viruses are both too small to be seen without a microscope, they’re as different as giraffes and goldfish. Bacteria are relatively complex, single-celled creatures with a rigid wall and a thin, rubbery membrane surrounding the fluid inside the cell. They can reproduce on their own. Fossilized records show that bacteria have existed for about 3.5 billion years, and bacteria can survive in different environments, including extreme heat and cold, radioactive waste, and the human body. Most bacteria are harmless, and some actually help by digesting food, destroying disease-causing microbes, fighting cancer cells, and providing essential nutrients. Fewer than 1% of bacteria cause diseases in people. Viruses are tinier: the largest of them are smaller than the smallest bacteria. All they have is a protein coat and a core of genetic material, either RNA or DNA. Unlike bacteria, viruses can’t survive without a host. They can only reproduce by attaching themselves to cells. In most cases, they reprogram the cells to make new viruses until the cells burst and die. In other cases, they turn normal cells into malignant or cancerous cells. Also unlike bacteria, most viruses do cause disease, and they’re quite specific about the cells they attack. For example, certain viruses attacks cells in the liver, respiratory system, or blood. The Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Immunization, has completed the administrative rules process to require tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine for students enrolling in the 7th grade. The administrative rule change was effective January 16, 2013 and was implemented at the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year. The change requires a one-time booster dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis containing vaccine for children in grades 7 and above, and if born on or after September 15, 2000; regardless of the interval since the last tetanus/diphtheria containing vaccine. You may contact Warren County Health Services (515) 961-1074 with questions.

Car Seat Checkup Top 5 Things to Do

Right Seat. This is an easy one. Check the label on your car seat to make sure it’s appropriate for your child’s age, weight and height. Like milk, your car seat has an expiration date. Just double check the label on your car seat to make sure it is still safe.

INFORMATION SERIES FOR ADULTS

3 Important Reasons

Right Place. Kids are VIPs, just ask them. We know all VIPs ride in the back seat, so keep all children in the back seat until they are 13.

For Adults to Get Vaccinated

Right Direction. You want to keep your child in a rear-facing car seat for as long as possible, usually until around age 2. When he or she outgrows the seat, move your child to a forward-facing car seat. Make sure to attach the top tether after you tighten and lock the seat belt or lower anchors.

What vaccines do you need?

Getting vaccinated as an adult is easier than you think. • Adults can get vaccines at doctors’ offices, pharmacies, workplaces, community health clinics, and health departments. To find a vaccine provider near you, go to vaccine.healthmap.org. •

Most health insurance plans cover the cost of recommended vaccines. Check with your insurance provider for details and for a list of vaccine providers. Since 2010, all private health plans are required to cover all immunizations recommended on the Immunization Schedule for adults. As long as you receive your vaccines from an in-network provider you should not be asked for a copay. If you do not have health insurance, visit www.healthcare.gov to learn more about health coverage options.

All adults should get: • Flu vaccine every year to protect against seasonal flu • Td/Tdap to protect against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) Based on your age, health conditions, vaccines you received as a child, and other factors, you may need additional vaccines such as: • • • • • • • •

Vaccine side effects are usually mild and temporary. The most common side effects include soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site. Severe side effects are very rare.

•

Vaccines are one of the safest ways to protect your health. Most people, even those with health conditions or taking prescription drugs, should be vaccinated. However, if you are pregnant or have a weakened immune system, talk with your healthcare professional before being vaccinated, as some vaccines may not be recommended for you.

Chickenpox Hepatitis A Hepatitis B Human Papillomavirus (HPV) MMR Meningococcal Pneumococcal Shingles

Traveling overseas? There may be additional vaccines you need. Find out at: www.cdc.gov/travel

Vaccines are safe. • Vaccines are tested and monitored. Vaccines are tested before being licensed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and FDA continue to monitor vaccines after they are licensed. •

Visit safekids.org to find a car seat inspection event in your community.

First Case of Chikungunya Reported in Iowa What is Chikungunya (pronounced chik-en-gun-ye)? • A virus transmitted by mosquitoes. Mosquitoes become infected when they bite a person already infected with the virus; infected mosquitoes can then spread the virus to other people through bites. What are the symptoms of Chikungunya? • Symptoms usually begin three to seven days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. • The most common symptoms are fever and joint pain. Other symptoms may include headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, or rash. • Most patients feel better within a week, but in some people, the joint pain may persist for months.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

How common is Chikungunya in the U.S.? • Extremely common. As of last week, nearly 700 cases have been reported across the U.S. this year. Almost all of these cases occurred in people returning from affected areas of the Caribbean or South America. • Six locally-transmitted cases have been reported in Florida.

Diseases and the vaccines that help prevent them

Talk with your healthcare professional to make sure you are up-to-date with the vaccines recommended for you.

Pinch Test. Make sure the harness is tightly buckled and coming from the correct slots (check car seat manual). Now, with the chest clip placed at armpit level, pinch the strap at your child’s shoulder. If you are unable to pinch any excess webbing, you’re good to go.

Is Chikungunya a new disease? • No, Chikungunya was first described in an outbreak in Tanzania in the early 1950’s. • In late 2013, the first local transmission (which means mosquitoes in the area have been infected with the virus and are spreading it to people) of Chikungunya virus in Caribbean countries and territories was identified. • The spread of the Chikungunya virus to new parts of the world is causing more cases and attention in the U.S. The number of Chikungunya cases among travelers visiting or returning to the United States from affected areas will continue to increase.

Some diseases that can be prevented by vaccines:

Inch Test. Once your car seat is installed, give it a good shake at the base. Can you move it more than an inch side to side or front to back? A properly installed seat will not move more than an inch.

How can Chikungunya be prevented? • Prevent Chikungunya virus infection, as well as West Nile virus, by avoiding mosquito bites. • Use air conditioning or window/door screens to keep mosquitoes outside. o If you are not able to protect yourself from mosquitoes inside your home or hotel, sleep under a mosquito bed net. • Help reduce the number of mosquitoes outside your home or hotel room by emptying standing water from containers such as flowerpots or buckets. • When weather permits, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants. • Use insect repellents o Repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, and oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol products provide long lasting protection. o Always follow the label instructions when using insect repellent. • If you use both sunscreen and insect repellent, apply the sunscreen first and then the repellent. • Treat clothing with permethrin or purchase permethrin-treated clothing. o Do not spray repellent on the skin under your clothing. Are there any travel warnings to areas of the world where Chikungunya is present? • CDC has issued a Level 1 Watch for Chikungunya in the Caribbean which recommends that travelers use practical precautions - such as using insect repellant. Certain high risk populations, including the elderly, those with chronic conditions, and pregnant women, are advised to discuss their travel plans with their health care provider. What does the word Chikungunya mean? ‘chikungunya’ comes from a Tanzanian word which means “to be contortedâ€? and describes the stooped appearance of sufferers with joint pain.

West Nile Information Definition West Nile Virus (WNV) is transmitted by mosquitoes. People who are infected with WNV may not experience any signs or symptoms. Some people experience minor symptoms like fever and mild headache. Others, however, can develop a life-threatening illness that includes inflammation of the brain. People who experience mild signs and of a WNV infection generally recover on But severe illness that includes a severe disorientation or sudden weakness require medical attention.

You may not realize that you need vaccines throughout your adult life. Vaccines are still important to your health and here are just three reasons why. 1. You may be at risk for serious diseases that are still common in the U.S. Each year thousands of adults in the United States suffer serious health problems from diseases that could be prevented by vaccines — some people are hospitalized, and some even die. Even if you were fully vaccinated as a child, the protection from some vaccines you received can wear off over time and you may also be at risk for other diseases due to your job, lifestyle, travel, or health conditions. 2. You can protect your health and the health of those around you by getting the recommended vaccines. Vaccines reduce your chance of getting sick. Vaccines work with your body’s natural defense to reduce the chances of getting certain diseases as well as suffering complications from these diseases. Vaccines reduce your chance of spreading certain diseases. There are many things you want to pass on to your loved ones; a vaccine preventable disease is not one of them. Infants, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems (like those undergoing cancer treatment) are especially vulnerable to vaccine preventable diseases. 3. You can’t afford to risk getting sick. Even healthy people can get sick enough to miss work or school. If you’re sick, you may not be able to take care of your family and other obligations. Being vaccinated is your best protection against many serious diseases.

Fall Prevention Tips Everything you need to know to keep your kids safe from falls. Install Window Guards and Stops • Screens are meant to keep bugs out, not children in. Properly install window guards to prevent unintentional window falls. For windows above the first floor, include an emergency release device in case of fire. • Install window stops so that windows open no more than four inches. Open Windows From the Top and Close After Use • If you have windows that can open from both top and bottom, make a habit of opening just the top to prevent accidental falls. Keep in mind that as kids grow, they may have enough strength, dexterity and curiosity to open the bottom. • Keep windows locked and closed when they are not being used. Keep Kids From Climbing Near Windows • For your crawlers and climbers, move chairs, cribs and other furniture away from windows to help prevent window falls. • Never move a child who appears to be seriously injured after a fall — call 911 and let trained medical personnel move the child with proper precautions.

walkers: They don’t come with safety features that prevent the walkers from rolling down the stairs, and it’s easy for children to fall or reach higher objects that may be unsafe. So please be extra careful. • Because baby walkers can be dangerous, try using a stationary activity center. These items give your baby a chance to practice standing and moving more safely. Look for one that is on a stable, non-moveable base and place it away from stairs, hot appliances or window cords. Play on Soft Surfaces at Playgrounds • Take your kids to playgrounds with shock absorbing surfaces such as rubber, synthetic turf, sand, pea gravel, wood chips or mulch. If your child falls, the landing will be more cushioned than on asphalt, concrete, grass or dirt. Be Smart, Protect Your Head • It’s important that kids have the freedom to be creative and push their limits. That means wearing a helmet for appropriate activities such as biking or snowboarding to prevent a head injury that can ruin the fun down the road.

From the moment your baby starts to crawl, the world is a magical place filled with new adventures and discoveries. From a child’s perspective, everything is a potential mountain to climb (that giant bookshelf), obstacle to overcome (those pesky stairs) or mysterious place to investigate (anywhere beyond the safety gate). Little bumps will happen but we’re here to help so these brave expeditions don’t result in something more serious. • If possible, use shopping carts that have a wheeled child carrier that is permanently attached. Some of these models look like cars or benches attached to the shopping cart, so your kids will love them. • If you are placing your child in a shopping cart seat, use a harness or safety belt. If the belt is missing or broken, select another cart. • We know that letting your child ride in the cart basket, under the basket, on the sides or on the front of the cart is fun. It can also be dangerous. Watch Out for the Stairs • Use approved safety gates at the tops and bottoms of stairs and attach them to the wall, if possible. Remember to read the manufacturer’s instructions and warning labels to make sure you have the right gate for your needs. Not all gates are safe for use at the top of stairs. • Actively supervise toddlers on stairs. Hold their hands when walking up and down stairs. Prevent Slips at Home • Consider anti-slip rugs for the floors in your

Use Shopping Carts With Wheeled Attachments for Kids • Don’t leave your child alone in a shopping cart. Unintentional falls are the leading cause of non-fatal injuries for children in the United States. In 2010, unintentional falls resulted in nearly 3 million injuries requiring treatment in an emergency room.

Secure Kids When Seated • Keep babies and young kids strapped in when using high chairs, infant carriers, swings and strollers. • If your baby is in a carrier, remember to place it on the floor, not on top of a table or other furniture. Help Babies Learn to Stand and Walk Safely • There are some things to know about baby
