TOP WORKPLACES: HOW WE GOT THE RESULTS OUTREACH WorkplaceDynamics reaches out to employers with at least 35 employees in Iowa to participate. It uses a combination of print and online ads and direct outreach to employers using direct marketing lists.

EMPLOYEE SURVEY Employees are surveyed at participating employers using either a paper or online survey application. Responders rank each statement on a seven-point scale, ranging from “Strongly Disagree” to “Strongly Agree,” so the score shown is the percentage of responders who answered “Slightly Agree,” “Agree” or “Strongly Agree” to each statement. Each of the statements has been tested to ensure it has a high correlation with how employees feel about their workplace, which is calculated by correlating the statement responses to employee engagement.

RESPONSE REQUIREMENTS A response rate of at least 35 percent for employees based in Iowa is required. In addition, employers with 85 or fewer Iowa employees must have at least 30 respondents. At least 500 employees must be included in the random sample for employers of 2,500 or less. For those employers over 2,500 but fewer than 5,000 employees, 20 percent minimum distributed is required. For employers with 5,000 or more employees at least 1,000 surveys must be distributed.

TESTING FOR QUESTIONABLE RESULTS After the survey is complete, a series of statistical tests is run to look for questionable results. A small number of employers are disqualified based on those tests.

SELECTION OF TOP WORKPLACES Employers are categorized into size bands, because smaller employers tend to score higher than mid-size employers, and mid-size employers tend to score higher than large employers. The employers are then ranked within their size band, based solely on employee responses to the survey statements. The top employers in each size band are then selected as the Top Workplaces in Iowa for 2017 and listed on the Top Workplaces Summary page.

HOW TO GET GOOD WORKERS TO STAY PUT AND BE CONTENT MIKE TRAUTMANN n a state where unemployment is a measly 3 percent and employee loyalty seems to be a fading notion, retaining quality workers is more important than ever. Our research partner, WorkplaceDynamics, asked employees to nominate the state’s top workplaces and tell us why they are the best. That’s what Top Workplaces is all about —

measuring the ingredients that employees say make good workplaces, and then objectively calculating which are the very best. he first thing to know about VGM Group Inc. is that it’s employees own the place, thanks to an employee stock ownership plan, also known as an ESOP. “We’re 100 percent employee-owned. This business is completely owned by the staff here,” said Amy Streeter, manager of talent acquisition and development for the business services company. “When you talk about companies that value employees, that is very true about VGM.” That ownership sets the tone for employees in the Waterloo headquarters and across the country, Streeter said. People take pride in the company, she said. And they’re empowered to make decisions and problem solve on their own. “I’ve never worked at an organization that puts so much confidence in individuals to make decisions,” she said. “It’s not micromanaged. Its extremely macro-managed.” When asked to describe the company in a survey, VGM workers routinely used the word “family,” Streeter said. When employees have children, they’re gifted VGM-branded onesies. Families are encouraged to bring their families to VGM’s on-site fitness center. And the company offers regular events that blend family into the workplace, whether it’s free family tickets to watch Waterloo Black Hawks hockey games or family movie nights at VGM’s farm, an events venue, complete with carnival games and picnic foods. “For employees to want to

each other.” Marketing team member Jarrod Lister says that feeling was apparent the first day he started at VGM as an

intern in 2016. “I thought I was going to be the odd one out,” he said. “But from day one, I was part of the family.” That goes for the CEO, too. Lister recalled a recent interaction with VGM’s top executive.

Q. What’s one benefit or perk you offer that makes your workplace stand out? A. I can only say one? I would have to say the ESOP. Having that employee stock ownership program is really huge. It’s a significant match to our employees’ salaries. It is extremely significant what they get in stock ownership. Q. What’s your biggest challenge in attracting qualified candidates? A. We’re in Northeast Iowa and not in a big metro so we don’t have a large population to pull from. We have over 900 employees, 80 percent of them here in Waterloo. We’ve grown drastically over the last six years.

atherine “Kat” Leaf spent six months recovering from an automobile accident in 2007 that included having a steel rod placed in her broken back. Thankfully, said Leaf, she didn’t have to worry losing her job while she recovered. Her employer, Tabacco Outlet Plus on East Euclid Avenue in Des Moines held her position for her. But that wasn’t all. The convenience store’s parent company Kwik Trip Inc., also wrote Leaf a check to help her with expenses while she was recovering. That and a fundraiser held by co-workers and

customers “kept me from getting to the point of not being able to pay my rent,” said Leaf. It’s the feeling of family that has kept Leaf a loyal employee at the Tobacco Outlet for 16 years. She joined the company when she was 18 years old. Several employees at her store have worked for the company for many years, she said. She credits a strong profit sharing plan, flexible work schedules and a friendly work environment to her longevity with the company. "They make it a great atmosphere to work in because they want their employees to be friendly to customers," Leaf said. Tobacco Outlet’s parent company, family-owned Kwik

Todd Nash, an Edward Jones regional leader for southeast Iowa, who works as a financial adviser out of a Coralville office, said there are probably many reasons why the company has been recognized as one of Iowa’s Top Workplaces

described a couple who he assisted with retirement a couple of years ago. The wife still frequently brings

fresh-cut flowers from her garden to his office, he said. He said it’s “gratifying” to help clients reach their financial goals. “Our clients rely on us,” he said. Edward Jones also gives back to the community, which helps employees feel meaningful, Nash said. For example, his team in southeast Iowa has participated in Alzheimer’s walks, as the memory loss disease has affected some of their clients who seek help with retirement. “We want to make a meaningful difference,” he said.

5 KEYS TO A BETTER WORKPLACE DOUG CLAFFEY CEO OF WORKPLACE DYNAMICS What distinguishes a Top Workplace from an average one? The truth is, there’s no single practice, no one-size-fits-all solution for achieving great results. But there are common qualities of success you should be able to identify in every company. We know from our decade of research it’s not perks or “coolness” that makes the difference. The best employers carefully craft a positive workplace culture. We also know these organizations on The Des Moines Register list of Top Workplaces for 2017 share a common foundation that supports a healthy culture — and employee engagement. Here are five key lessons:

1. PEOPLE REALLY ARE THE GREATEST ASSET: It goes beyond lip service. It’s a core principle that’s brought to life every day, with leadership putting employees at the center of their thinking. Done right, the feeling is returned: Employees consistently tell us that a sense of appreciation and confidence in leadership are among the most important factors for their workplace satisfaction. 2. LEADERS LISTEN: The best leaders listen to the feedback provided by employees both formally and informally. While some leaders might dwell on the inherent risks of giving employees a voice, leaders at Top Workplaces are clued in to their team’s challenges and use this knowledge in decision-making. This builds a sense of commitment and accountability. 3. EVERYONE IS IN THE LOOP: It’s difficult to be fully committed if you’re kept in the dark. Employees want to be well-informed. Leaders in Top Workplaces recognize this. They’re committed to sharing information as much — and as often — as they can. And they don’t just share the happy news. Organizations that fail to communicate with staff on a regular basis, substantively, will leave an information void. That gap will be filled quickly with rumors and speculation. 4. LIVE WITH A PURPOSE: Employees want to feel their work contributes to something meaningful. Effective leaders deliver an inspiring vision, which the entire team connects with day to day. In 2016, among

the top 10 percent of companies we surveyed nationwide, 96 percent of employees reported feeling motivated. Compare that to the bottom 10 percent of organizations (which most closely represent a “typical” workforce), where just 62 percent of employees felt motivated. This 34 percentage-point gap represents a massive drop in productivity. Motivation matters. 5. BUILD COMMUNITY: Neuroscience teaches us the importance people place on feeling accepted and safe in their “tribe.” It helps them stay focused and contributes to success. In forging productive employee experiences, Top Workplaces care about building community. They hold regular, purposeful events that foster a sense of belonging. That sense of appreciation also keeps employees connected. We see it in the WorkplaceDynamics survey comments, like this one from an employee at Storm Lake-based Central Bank: "Open communication and brainstorming is welcome here. It is a true teamwork atmosphere where everyone benefits by working together.” The best workplaces always look to improve. After all, it’s a journey, not a destination. Even topranked companies will find things to work on in a process of continuous improvement. If done right, employees will know their workplace is special. Employers shouldn’t be shy asking for extra effort in return. Ensure staff remains active in the ongoing success of the organization — with all the necessary accountability. That changed last year when founder Robb Spearman retired and sold the company to four of his brokers: Lance Hanson, Matt Mauro, Ou Meksay and Shane Torres. The new owners say the company retained its core principles — principles that have made REMAX Real Estate Concepts one of The Register’s Top Workplaces seven years in a row. “Our philosophy is the agents are our clients, so our business is built around serving them and providing the best tools to the agents to make them successful,” Torres said.
