From the WHA President…

Dear Fellow Breeders, We just finished the annual meeting in Wisconsin Dells this past Saturday and enthusiasm ran extremely high. It was a pleasure to see the room packed and the seats full for the noon banquet. The main subject of conversation was the upcoming 2016 Junior National Hereford Expo to be held in Wisconsin on July 9–15, 2016 in Madison. A power point presentation about the 2016 JNHE was given by Sondra Brancel and Kim Jones. They made an excellent presentation informing the membership of all the details for By: Joe Starr the 2016 JNHE. They are starting to put together sign up 2015 WHA President sheets for volunteers to help with the JNHE. If you have time, please look at the website under the 2016 JNHE tab to see where you might be able to assist us with this show or contact Kim Jones, BJ Jones or Sondra Brancel. It is going to take a lot of volunteer manpower to make this show an excellent event for all that attend. Remember to attend the upcoming WI Hereford State Sale to be held on March 5th, 2016 at the Grant County Fair grounds in Lancaster. The semen auction will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the cattle to sell at 12:00 noon. All the proceeds from this semen auction go directly to the 2016 JNHE. If you have any questions about the semen auction, please refer to our WI Hereford Association website at wisconsinherefords.org or contact BJ Jones for more details. The catalog for the sale cattle is also posted on the website if you did not receive one in the mail. I want to thank Nicki Folkman and Elizabeth Bowen for volunteering to be the queen and princess chair persons. These two young ladies that have come up through our WHA organization and now they are leading this program. We should all be extremely proud of what this WHA program does to develop young people to be our future leaders. Good luck with your calving season. Tonight as I am writing this, we are receiving about 12" of snow with blizzard winds. Not the greatest day or night for calving but these calves are tough and they can withstand our Wisconsin winter. I hope to see you at the State Sale in a few weeks.

National Show Results

Minute with the Meents The 2016 Denver National Western Stock Show is now history, for the Hereford breed. Tremendous numbers of quality Herefords were professionally displayed and exhibited. Over 800 head competed at various shows throughout the week. There were 349 head in open show, 151 head in the junior show, 43 pen of bulls, 29 pen of heifers, and nine carload of bulls By: John Meents, shown. Congratulations to Lowderman AHA Fieldman Cattle Company, Macomb, Ill. for breeding both the Grand Champion Polled Hereford Bull and Female in Denver. LCC FBF Time Traveler 480, Grand Champion Polled Bull, and LCC TG Be My Merry Time 7B, Grand Champion Polled Female were both progeny of RST Times A Wastin’ 0124, who was the 2013 Supreme Denver Grand Champion. Both the Mile High Night Sale and the Mile High Eve sale were hugely successful. It was estimated that well over 5,000 people attend the Mile High Night Sale where 47 lots averaged $16,404 with the 14 bulls averaging $16,604, and the 35 females averaging $ 16,336. At the Mile High Eve Sale, 8 flushes averaged $13,303, 3 pregnancies averaged $7000, 86 embryos averaged $1233, and 78 units of semen averaged $423. Highlighting the Mile High Night Sale was KJ BJ DWE 686Z Salsa 364C ET, the Hereford Youth Foundation of American donation heifer which was donated by Jensen Bros. Courtland, Kansas. The March 29, 2015 daughter of CRR 719 Catapult 109 sold for $80,000 to the Jonny Harris Family, Screven, GA, C&L Hereford Ranch, Steve and Jill Folkman and Family, Ixonia, WI, and RGR Cattle Company, Lonny, Kim (Carney) and Riley Rhodes, Carlinville, IL. A very special thank you to all parties involved for the continued support of HYFA. Each year in Denver, I enjoy looking at all the cattle both on the hill and in the yards, especially the bulls. Some of the very best Hereford bulls in the world are on display. This year was no exception! Since returning back home and recapping the highlights of the stock show, I realize that this time of year is the most import time of year to improve your herd. The fastest, most efficient way to improve your herd is on the bull selection you make in the next 90 days prior to the spring breeding season. I encourage all Hereford breeders to do more Artificial Insemination on your Hereford females in 2016. The genetic advancement you will make by using the top bulls will change your program more than anything else you can do all year long. The Hereford breed is very blessed to have the genetic versatility. By using Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs), Genomic Enhanced EPDs, and structural sound bulls improvement in your 2017 calf crop will be tremendous.

Also, the AHA has released the updated EPDs for spring 2015. The EPDs and the updated Trends, Traits and Distributions report is available online at Hereford.org. Spring 2016

WJHA News Hereford Steer Show Rule Changes

2016 JNHE Update

The 2016 Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) will be held in Madison, Wisconsin this summer from July 9-15 and the planning committee has been busy making preparations to host the best Junior National show we possibly can. The show would not be possible without the help of the volunteers who graciously give of their time and money to make this event possible for the Hereford families of this Nation. If you would like to help make this amazing event possible, there are two ways you can help:

Junior National Hereford Expo New DNA Testing for All steers by April 1, 2016 Steer exhibitors at the 2016 Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) will go through a different process for registering their steers (see AHA DNA show rule). In addition to registration papers (no steer certificates allowed), exhibitors will have to submit DNA for their steers by April 1, 2016. Once an exhibitor has received the results of his or her steer’s DNA test and the steer’s DNA aligns with the registration papers, the exhibitor can then register his or her steer for the JNHE. Please contact the American Hereford Association for DNA testing kit. WLBA/WJHA Spring Preview and Open Jackpot Show Hereford steers born in 2015 and sired by a bull and dam recorded in the register of the AHA. AHA Hereford Steer Registration papers or AHA Steer Certificate papers with a registered sire and dam are required at check-in.

• Sponsorships of all levels are still available starting with a business card sized ad in the show program for $100 and beyond. Financial contributions to the show are tax deductible and all money donated supports the event!

• Volunteer needs for the show begin on Wednesday, July 6th and will likely continue through Saturday, July 16th. If you are available to give of your time for any part of the show, we want you to be a part of the JNHE experience! There is a job for everyone who wants to be a part of this event.

Wisconsin State Fair – DNA sampling and RFID required by Feb 8, 2016 Hereford steers born in 2015 and sired by a bull and dam recorded in the register of the AHA. AHA Hereford Steer Registration papers or AHA Steer Certificate papers with a registered sire and dam are required. Youth wanting to show their steers will need to have both DNA and RFID identified through the Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium (WLIC) by February 8, 2016. To obtain a DNA/RFID request form available on the Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium website http://www.wiid.org/dna-program

If you would be willing to help support this year’s JNHE, please contact BJ Jones at docjones@centurytel.net or Sondra Brancel at brancel@nextgenerationgenetics.com or visit the 2016 JNHE tab on www.wisconsinherefords.org We promise this will be the experience of a lifetime!
