management of yearling bulls
1. Remember, your yearling bull has been on a higher energy ration than pasture and ration changes should be done gradually. It is good to let them harden up on pasture before breeding season begins. However the pasture must be good, and they still require extra energy and protein. If turned out on bad pasture or dropped off too fast, they can lose weight rapidly. Research shows that this causes a bull to produce poor quality semen and also affects the bull’s libido. It takes 60 days for sperm to develop and mature. High stress conditions during that time can reduce its fertilizing ability. 2. If handled properly and not dominated by older bulls, a young bull should service 20-25 females his first season. Size of the pasture and terrain also influence this. 3. Limit the breeding season to no more than 60 days on a yearling bull. If you can’t limit the season, consider rotation to give him a rest.
4. Watch a young bull early in the season to detect any physical problems. A virgin bull can have inadequacies undetectable except through observation. If possible, hand mate a young bull to a few cows prior to turning out in large breeding pastures to observe breeding ability. 5. Maintain a good general health program, salt, mineral and fly control. 6. Recondition young bulls after the breeding season to allow them to mature to their genetic capabilities. This is a very critical age as they start losing their teeth at 18-24 months. A young bull consequently eats slower and cannot utilize as rough a feed, or compete for feed, as one with permanent teeth. Worming can make a significant difference as well as a grub and louse control program. Research indicates that a bull’s usefulness as a two-year old can be retarded if not properly reconditioned after use as a yearling. Substantiated by research from North Dakota State University and Larry Corah, Beef Specialist at Kansas State University, and others.

YEARLING REPLACEMENT HEIFERS As a special attraction we have decided to offer a select group of five groups of 5 head of replacement heifers. These heifers are sired by our in herd use registered sire. They are bred with maternal strength, longevity, along with productivity and performance. They are preconditioned for all shots including bangs, vibrio, lepto, and tested negative for BVD. Heifers have been Vet palpated for reproductive tract maturity and pelvic area. PERTAINING TO YEAROUS CATTLE ONLY: HEALTH – Bulls have been vaccinated and boostered with BoviShield Gold 5 with VibrioLepto 5, Vision 7 with somnus and backpoured 2 times with Ivermectin. All bulls have been tested negative for PI BVD. All bulls will have passed a breeding soundness exam and certificate will be provided. All two-year old bulls will be Trich tested negative. SUPPLEMENTAL SHEETS – Supplemental sheets will be available sale day with scrotal circumference on all of the bulls. If you desire this information beforehand contact Duane Yearous. WINTERING ARRANGEMENTS – Any yearling bull selling for $1500 or more or 2 year old for $2000 or more, buyer can choose to send the bull(s) back to Yearous Cattle Co. for Wintering at no cost until April1, 2014, or take the bull home with you on sale day and deduct $50.00 per bull. Any bull remaining after April 1 will be charged feed cost on a daily basis. Please make arrangements for extended feeding period. We encourage all bulls to be picked up no later than May 1, 2014. All bulls become responsibility of buyer when sold. YCC assumes no liability for injury or death to bulls returned for feeding. Bulls will be handled and cared for as if they were our own. Any abnormal health or vet costs will be assumed by buyer. Transportation of bulls returned for feeding will be provided by YCC. ALL BULLS SELL FREE OF ANY CURRENT RECOGNIZED GENETIC DEFECT BY THE AMERICAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION Any buyer requesting carcass epds on their purchased bull(s), Yearous Cattle Company will participate in a cost share basis on a genetic/DNA test with the American Angus Association. Cost will be on a 50/50 basis and information will be shared with buyer and seller. Retained interest-You will notice in the catalog that Yearous Cattle Co. is retaining an interest in certain bulls. Buyer owns all possession and salvage rights of the bull purchased. YCC retains an interest for possible future use through A.I. and reserves the right for collection at sellers expense and buyers convenience. If buyer also chooses to use through A.I. or participate in semen sales, the costs will be split accordingly. 18
FIRST BREEDING SEASON INJURY GUARANTEE Applies to Yearous Only Since insurance companies have eliminated “loss of use” coverage and with the reality that young bulls are sometimes injured during their first breeding season, we at YEAROUS CATTLE CO. have worked to come up the a fair and reasonable way to share the risk with our bull customers. In the past, with customers that wanted the “loss of use” insurance, we shared one-half the premium cost for coverage. We have decided to continue sharing one-half the risk during this transitional period with the breed guarantee below. All bulls selling for $2000 or more will be covered 50% by YEAROUS CATTLE CO. if they are injured during the first breeding season and are not able to return to service. Breeding season is defined as the 90-day period following the first turnout of the bulls. Fifty percent of the purchase price of the injured bull minus 50% of the salvage value will be given as a credit in a future sale or toward a replacement bull, if one is available. We must be notified should injury occur and before the bull is sold. Any injured bull must be diagnosed by a veterinarian and results provided to YEAROUS CATTLE CO. as soon as an injury occurs and prior to the bull being sold for salvage. A copy of the sales receipt must be provided to YEAROUS CATTLE CO. if the bull is sold for salvage. All claims must be made prior to September 1, 2014 Example 1: A $4000 bull is injured and will not heal. A credit of $2000 minus one half-salvage value will be given to the buyer. Example 2: A $2000 bull is injured and will not heal. A credit of $1000 minus one half-salvage value will be given to the buyer. Example 3: A $1750 bull is injured and will not heal. No credit is given. Buyer retains all salvage value. This guarantee does not include mortality, a life threatening injury; freeze damage due to winter elements, or mismanagement. We will not replace a dead animal if it is killed or has to be humanely destroyed for any reason.

Plateau Gelbvieh was started back in 1984 and since its inception has placed a great deal of time and effort in the production of high performing, maternal Gelbvieh cattle that are thick and wean heavy calves. Over the years when Balancer Hybrids were introduced, Jim started using Angus bulls and females to produce them. Through an extensive AI and embryo transplant program, Plateau Gelbvieh has utilized top genetics from both breeds to create the high quality product the commercial customer has become accustomed to. As you can see from this year’s offering, many full brothers and many AI sired bulls are represented. Some of the results of this extensive program include the champion Futurity bull at the 2012 National Western Stock Show and the Champion Gelbvieh female at the recent 2013 Black Hills Stock Show, and Grand Champion Balancer at the 2014 National Western Stockshow, raised by Plateau Gelbvieh. The bulls are grown from weaning to yearling on a feed test that is approximately 100 days. Our aim is to develop bulls that have an opportunity to express their genetic potential for growth and still keep them in the right condition to enter the breeding pastures and not melt and maintain sound feet and athleticism. Over the past several years, we have utilized a Purina impact grower ration that is designed for projected average daily gains of 3.5 pounds per day. They are fed free-choice millet hay and are in large pens to allow for plenty of exercise. The bulls that have been cataloged represent what we consider to be the top end of the bulls we originally evaluated as potential sale bulls. These individuals have been critiqued for disposition, soundness and gain and will all pass a breeding soundness exam prior to the sale. This year we showed a pen of 3 Balancer bulls at the NWSS. We are extreamly proud of these bulls as they were very well accepted by several Gelbvieh breeders. They are very stout bulls. Wintering Arrangements: As a service to our customers, we will continue feeding the bulls until April 1, 2014 at no cost. Bulls may be fed at the buyer’s request for $2.00/day after April 1. Bulls are fed and managed at the buyer’s risk, including any veterinary costs and will be given the same quality care they have received while on test. Please make arrangements in advance of coming so someone will be available to load your bull(s). First Breeding Season Guarantee: Plateau Gelbvieh will provide a first breeding season guarantee on all bulls sold in their February 28, 2014 sale for $2500 or more. First breeding season is defined as the time of turnout to 90 days after turnout. If you have a problem, please act on it quickly. If a bull is hurt during this time period, the buyer will return the bull to Plateau Gelbvieh and pick out another bull. If such bull is not suited or needed, Plateau Gelbvieh will give you full purchase price credit on next year’s sale only. Liability: Each animal will be at the buyer’s risk as soon as sold, but will be cared for by the seller for a reasonable period of time. Every precaution will be taken for the welfare of the cattle sold. Neither owner, sale manager or High Plains Livestock Exchange can be held responsible for any accidents, but every effort will be made to provide for the safety and comfort of those attending the sale. Announcements: Supplement sheets will be available sale day. Announcements made sale day will take precedence over printed material in the catalog. Mail or Phone Bids: Mailed or telephoned bids will be handled in a most confidential manner if you are unable to attend the sale. Contact the sale management staff for assistance in purchasing cattle on order. Transportation: Transportation of bulls will be the responsibility of the buyer. to the PERFORMANCE PARTNERS BULL SALE! All of us at Ernst Herefords give a very sincere thank you to our sale partners Duane Yearous and Jim Roelle and their families for allowing us to participate with them again this year. We believe the opportunity for commercial cattlemen to be able to come to a single sale each year to buy bulls that satisfy their crossbreeding needs is unique. Ernst Herefords is a family operation. In addition to Barbara and me each of our four children and two son in laws are involved and contribute to the success of our program. Our son Kevin is currently a senior at CSU and my right hand man. He plans to continue his heavy involvement in our operation after graduation. My daughters Melissa and Katheryn do most of the data and collection. Stephanie and Chad, our daughter and son in law in Montana run a group of our cows in the north country for us and are developing a strong market for the bulls from that cow herd. Jeremy, Melissa’s husband helps us with a variety of tasks including the video of our bulls that will be on our website. I want to give a huge thank you to Kevin’s girlfriend Courtney Pisano for all her help this fall and winter. She and Kevin are also responsible for most of the bull photos and the shooting of the videos. Our goal is to provide practical Hereford cattle that will work in the harsh conditions of the western plains. You will find that the EPD’s on our cattle are fairly consistent from bull to bull. Their birth weight EPD’s are below breed average with most qualifying to be heifer bulls. Through the test of time the Baldy Cow has proven to be one of the best producing and adaptable females for North America. Heterosis is a benefit the commercial cattleman cannot ignore because of the positive financial impact it has on your operations. He is a Line One Hereford, the most influential line of cattle in the history of the Hereford breed. Gordon was sired by a Holden Herefords of Montana son known as 286M. This bull has made his mark on some of the best Hereford herds in the nation including Jamison Herefords of Kansas, Debter Herefords of Alabama and Shaw Herefords in Idaho. We selected Gordon for the following reasons; the maternal power of his sire, his dams maternal characteristics, and longevity, the fact he is pigmented in both eyes, has a a red scrotum and is short marked, big footed and moves like a cat. We fully expected Gordon to be an outstanding producer of females to build the strength of our herd while producing solid bulls to sell to the commercial cattleman. We bought “Sentinel” as a calf at the famous Bieber Hereford Herd Dispersal. He is unique in that he has a ultra low birth weight epd of -0.8, is moderate in frame, pigmented with red testicles while exhibiting a lot of muscle thickness throughout. He is sired by UPS Domino 3027 and is part of ABS Sire Service Hereford AI battery. 3027 has been used heavily both commercially and in the pure bred industry for the consistent low birth weight he brings and has surely passed along to Sentinel. Sentinels sons are a sound set of bulls that will bring the same characteristics shared by their sire and grandsire, 3027. Sentinels dam was one of our favorites in the Bieber dispersal. God said, “I need someone willing to start the day early, send the spouse off to the second job in town, feed the cattle, work all day on the land, feed the cattle again, eat supper and to improve the chance of small famer success, spend the evening providing volunteer help to the Rancher’s Coop.” So God made a Rancher. “I need somebody strong enough to rustle a calf and yet gentle enough to give love and comfort to grandchildren. Somebody to call the cattle, run the machinery, come in hungry, but wait lunch until the Postman’s done with the latest gossip and tell him to take care – and mean it.” So God made a Rancher. God said, “I need somebody willing to sit up all night with a newborn calf. And watch it die. Then dry the eyes and say, ‘Maybe next time.’ I need somebody who can shape a cattle prod from an oak branch, tube a steer with a pipe and funnel, who can make a harness out of baying twin, and move a sick animal using a pallet and chain. And who, at calving time and winter feeding, will finish the forty-hour week by Tuesday noon, then, pain’n from loading a ton an half of hay each day, put in another seventy-two hours.” So God made a Rancher. God had to have somebody willing to ride the gator at double speed to get the harrowing done ahead of the rain clouds and yet stop and race to help a colicing horse in the next field. God said, “I need somebody strong enough to clear brush and heave bails, yet gentle enough to tame a colt and wean cattle, tend to disoriented calves, and still stop to help a lost kildee. It had to be somebody who’d love the land and not cut corners. Somebody to seed, weed, feed, breed, rotate the fields, plant the garden, cook and replenish the self-feeders. Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.
Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.
Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.
Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
