THIS IS DEFIANCE

DC FOOTBALL 2011 49 All-Americans in Program History - 34 Winning Seasons on the Gridiron

THIS IS DEFIANCE COLLEGE

WELCOME TO DEFIANCE

Defiance College, founded in 1850, is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Church of Christ, providing outstanding academic programs and co-curricular activities for a student body of nearly 1,100 students.

Dear Fellow Defiance College Fan,

Building on a strong foundation of more than a century of educating citizens for lives of leadership and service, Defiance College provides opportunities for its students to make a meaningful impact on society in the twenty-first century with an educational experience of engagement.

We hope that while you are with us today, you will have the opportunity to explore as many parts of Defiance College as possible and that you will share in the excitement about DC continuing to grow around the nation. This year’s entering freshman class is the largest in recent memory. During the past year, we have seen significant increases in applications, with particular increases in applications from outside Ohio, as we become more and more a college with national reach and scope. In fact, this past year, more than half of the students applying to DC came from outside Ohio, representing 48 states and territories.

The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance College has been named for five-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past two years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its Community Engagement Classification. The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2010-2011 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum; and Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization. Defiance College offers students a world of opportunities to enhance their academic experience, from cultural visits in world-class cities across the continent, to international trips through the DC Global program, all of which open minds to new ideas and cultures and provide insights to help in competition for jobs and graduate school placement. Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity. As a national leader in the field of service learning and engagement, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better – in their communities, in distant villages, and in their careers. Approximately 10,000 men and women across the globe claim Defiance College as their alma mater, and they excel in all walks of life.

The entire Defiance College family joins me in welcoming you to our campus and to today’s game.

Why are students traveling from all around the United States (and other countries as well) to attend DC? I think it is because Defiance College offers students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered, small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. Let me explain. As a small college, DC works to help students grow as people, providing individualized attention in the classroom, the guidance of Personal Success Plans, mentoring, and assistance geared to the challenges and potential of each student. DC provides this in a rural, caring, and supportive setting, thereby enabling students to challenge themselves in new ways and grow as individuals, leaders, and citizens committed to service. At the same time, however, through a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities, DC opens to students an entire world of opportunities, helping students to develop a distinctive Defiance College Resume that will enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. From a broad-based liberal arts education; innovative programs that link what goes on in the classroom with the realities of the outside world and give students distinctive hands-on experience in their relevant fields; international and domestic travel opportunities; exposure to diverse cultural experiences; the use of technologies to bring the world into the classroom in Defiance; and unique service and research opportunities, DC aims to give students the tools they need to become life-long learners and to make distinctive contributions to a changing world. While you are enjoying today’s events on campus, I hope you will have an opportunity to get to know some of our students individually. They are a wonderful group, with incredible potential. I very much enjoy being part of the Defiance College family with them, as they bring excitement, energy, fresh perspectives, and commitment to service – to name just a few of their many attributes. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers and staff, for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go “above and beyond” on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes, and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D” all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable faculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are so proud to host. Go Jackets!

IN THE COMMUNITY

DC FOOTBALL 2011 12 -Time Conference Champions - 1920, 1924, 1931, 1953, 1962, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1976, 1977, 2001

Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary, to explore academic boundaries, to take on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and to become engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience. Nowhere else will you find students committed to their communities like Defiance College, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engagement. During the 2010-2011 academic year, Defiance College student-athletes contributed 2,948 hours of service in their community. The football team contributed 750 hours of service last year. It is a tradition for the DC football team to hold its annual community service day before launching August summer camp. This year, team members spread out across the city and county to lend a hand. Their sites included Kids’ Creation playground, Defiance city parks, and the Defiance County fairgrounds in Hicksville. In addition, football team members sorted and checked warehoused Christmas lights for the city of Defiance. Many student-athletes at DC have taken active roles in leadership and service initiatives campus-wide. Such experiences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs as well as the leadership skills to create positive change. Football team members Matt Oliver, Ryne Rogers, D.J. Brigham, Sean Lightfoot, Tanner Engle, Zach Lopez and Vinny Polverine are DC Service Leaders. Teammate Bryant Green is a McMaster Scholar to Belize for the current academic year. Defiance College is featured for excellence in blending academics with community work by The Princeton Review in its Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance is also included in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service.

DEFIANCE COLLEGE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY

The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship.

Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus

12

and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a studentathlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement…to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

ROB TAYLOR - HEAD COACH, OFF. COORDINATOR, WR COACH (419) 783-2378 • RTAYLOR@DEFIANCE.EDU • NINTH SEASON

THE TAYLOR FILE B.A. Albion College, 1996 M.A. Defiance College, 2002 2005 Heartland Conference Coach of the Year Defiance (Head Coach) 2001 Heartland Conference Championship Defiance (Defensive Coordinator) 1996 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship St. Joseph’s (Defensive Line Coach) 1995 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year Albion (Defensive End) 1994 NCAA Division III National Championship Albion (Defensive End) 1992-95 - Four-Time MIAA Conference Champion Albion (Defensive End) Eight All Americans and 125 All-Conference Players Coached at Defiance College DC’s All-Time Wins Leader with 37 Entering 2011

The 2011 campaign will be the ninth of head coach Rob Taylor’s tenure at the helm of the Yellow Jacket football program and his 14th overall with the Purple and Gold. Prior to taking over the reins, Taylor spent five seasons as the team’s defensive coordinator. During the 2010 season, Taylor led the Jackets to a 6-4 overall record and became the program’s all-time wins leader on the sidelines by coaching the squad to a 10-7 win at Manchester on November 6. The victory clinched Taylor’s fourth winning season and pushed his record mark to 37 triumphs for DC on the gridiron. Taylor’s record was not the only high point of the 2010 year for Defiance, as a five-game win streak late in the season boosted the Jackets to a 6-2 clip and a second-place finish in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets then hauled in two of the three HCAC Player-of-the-Year honors, with Kyle Longsdorf and Tom Foos being recognized for their efforts on defense and special teams respectively. Taylor has seen four of his student-athletes earn POY honors, to go with 125 All-HCAC performers and eight All-Americans during his 13 total seasons with the Purple and Gold. Along with the individual accolades, Defiance has turned into one of the premier teams in the HCAC under Taylor’s watchful eye. The Jackets have finished among the top-three teams in the HCAC in five of the last six seasons and have only had two losing records in league play during the Taylor era.

and helped lead the Jackets to the HCAC Championship in 2001 for the program’s 12th league title in school history. His 2001 and 2002 squads each gave up fewer than 14 points per game and ranked among the top 25 NCAA teams in multiple statistical categories. The 2002 unit led the HCAC by yielding only 173 passing yards per game, while his special teams work resulted in a conference-leading 22.1 yards per kick-off return. Before coming to Defiance, Taylor coached the defensive line at NCAA Division II St. Joseph’s College (Ind.). During his time there, Taylor helped lead the Pumas to a Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship in 1996. As a student-athlete at Albion College in Michigan, Taylor was a part of four-straight Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships, two NCAA playoff berths and a NCAA Division III National Championship in 1994. The following year, he was named as the MIAA Most Valuable Player as a defensive end. Over the duration of his playing and coaching careers, the Grosse Ile, Mich., native has been involved with seven conference championships and four NCAA postseason appearances. Taylor and his wife, Elizabeth, have four children with Bo (13) followed by Lexi (11), Jackson (9) and Emma (6).

After spending his first two seasons at the helm rebuilding the program, Taylor steered the Jackets to a second-place showing in the HCAC standings in 2005 to win HCAC Coach-of-the-Year honors. The turnaround effort proved to be a sign of the success to come for Defiance on the gridiron. DC has posted a winning record in conference action in all but one season since 2005, boasting a .619 winning percentage in HCAC contests during that time. In that same span, Taylor has guided the Purple and Gold to 32 total victories on the gridiron.

Prior to being promoted to head coach, Taylor compiled and managed one of the best defenses in the nation on a consistent basis

CHUCK EHRET - OFFENSIVE LINE COACH

(419) 783-2386 • CEHRET@DEFIANCE.EDU • SECOND SEASON The 2011 campaign will be the second for Chuck Ehret as the offensive line coach at Defiance College. Along with his coaching duties, Ehret also serves as the program’s strength and conditioning coordinator.

Ehret is no stranger to the HCAC, coming to DC after spending two seasons handling the offensive line at Manchester College. During his tenure with the Spartans, Ehret saw the MC ground game finish among the top two rushing attacks in the HCAC during each season, while placing four offensive linemen on the All-HCAC squad.

Ehret’s impact with the Yellow Jackets was felt immediately in his first season on the sidelines, as his front line ranked first in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference by allowing only six sacks and paving the way to 218.8 rushing yards per game over eight league contests. The result was Defiance averaging 25.2 points per game in conference action, for its highest scoring average since the HCAC Championship season in 2001.

Along with his six years of collegiate coaching, which include stops at Taylor University and Valparaiso University and working camps at the University of Notre Dame, Ehret spent four years as a member of the offensive line during his playing career at Malone University. Ehret earned a degree in sport management from Malone, before completing a master’s degree in sports administration from Valparaiso.

NUBIS PADHYE - QUARTERBACKS COACH

(419) 576-0880 • NPADHYE@DEFIANCE.EDU • SECOND SEASON Nubis Padhye will continue to serve as the quarterbacks coach for the Yellow Jackets during the 2011 season. Padhye also spends time working in the Defiance College admissions office. Padhye joined the Yellow Jackets after serving as a graduate assistant at Ashland University for two seasons. Padhye has also spent time on the coaching staffs at Westminster College and Ohio State University, while specializing with the quarterback and wide receiver positions at Ashland and Ohio State.

Padhye began his coaching career as a student assistant at OSU, where he worked with the Buckeye wide receivers for two years, before moving on to Westminster College for one season. Padhye then accepted the graduate assistant position at Ashland and helped the Eagles reach the NCAA Division II National Playoffs, while coaching a pair of All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference wide receivers. Padhye owns a degree in business administration from Ohio State and added a master’s degree in sports marketing from Ashland in 2010.

R.J. CHIDESTER - TIGHT ENDS COACH

(419) 956-1094 • RCHIDESTER@DEFIANCE.EDU • FOURTH SEASON R.J. Chidester is in his fourth year with the Defiance College coaching staff and his first as a full-time member. Chidester had previously served as a student assistant and graduate assistant with the Yellow Jackets, after transitioning from being a two-sport athlete at DC. The former four-year letterman for football and baseball will specialize with the tight ends in 2011, while also assisting the director of retention as an academic support coordinator for Defiance College.

Chidester served as a student assistant in 2008, assisting head coach Rob Taylor with the quarterbacks, before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in sport management and a minor in wellness and corporate fitness. Chidester has since completed a master’s degree in education from DC. During his playing career with the Purple and Gold, Chidester lettered a total of eight times on the diamond as well as the gridiron. Chidester played in all 10 football games during his senior season, finishing fourth on the squad with 60 total tackles from his linebacker position.

DON PERNA - RUNNING BACKS COACH (419) 783-2583 • FOURTH SEASON

Don Perna is in his fourth year with Defiance College and is responsible for coaching the running backs.

Perna came to DC, after having worked on the Hicksville coaching staff in numerous roles for nine seasons. Perna served as the head coach for the Aces on the gridiron for two years, after seven seasons as an assistant coach.

Perna earned a master’s degree in teaching from Marygrove College in 2005 and currently teaches at Hicksville Elementary. Perna resides in Mark Center, Ohio, with his wife, Liz, and two daughters Victoria (6) and Addison (4).

The 2011 campaign will be the third for Nate Jensen as the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Defiance College. Jensen also serves as the program’s recruiting coordinator. The first two years of the Jensen era at DC have been a success, as the Yellow Jackets ranked second in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in scoring defense, rushing defense and total sacks during each of the 2009 and 2010 campaigns. Jensen has also seen 13 of his student-athletes voted as All-HCAC performers, with Kyle Longsdorf earning All-Region and All-America honors one year ago. Jensen brought a strong familiarity of the DC program when he returned to Defiance as a coach, after playing for Rob Taylor and the Yellow Jackets on the gridiron from 2000-2003. Taylor served as Jensen’s defensive coordinator from 2000-2002 and as his head coach in 2003. During that time, Jensen was a three-year starter at the defensive end position and started on DC’s HCAC Championship team in 2001.

Jensen went on to spend five seasons on the coaching staff at Manchester College, where he coached the defensive line before specializing with the Spartan linebackers in 2007 and 2008. During that time, Jensen placed 12 of his players on the All-HCAC Team and helped turn MC into one of the top defenses in the conference. That trend continued in 2008, when the Spartans ranked among the top three-teams in the HCAC in multiple defensive statistics. Along with his coaching experiences at Manchester College, Jensen also gained valuable experience by working multiple camps and clinics. Jensen’s list is highlighted by time helping at camps hosted by Ball State and the Indiana High School Athletic Association. Nate is married to his wife and current DC women’s soccer assistant coach, Missy, and the couple resides in Defiance, Ohio.

Jensen played in 27 total games for the Yellow Jackets and earned All-HCAC honors, after setting career highs with 32 tackles, 7.5 hits for lost yardage and four sacks as a senior. When his playing career ended, Jensen completed his degree in mathematics from Defiance in the spring of 2004.

DC FOOTBALL 2011 49 All-Americans in Program History - 34 Winning Seasons on the Gridiron

DEFIANCE, Ohio - On the verge of opening the tenth season since claiming the 2001 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship, Defiance College has its eyes locked on repeating history and earning the 13th conference championship in the storied history on the gridiron for the Purple and Gold. That goal of returning to the NCAA National Tournament is within reach for Defiance and head coach Rob Taylor thanks to a strong and determined core of veteran student-athletes on the 2011 roster. One year after posting a 6-2 record in HCAC play and keeping its title hopes alive into the final week of the regular season, Defiance will return 18 starters and eight All-HCAC performers. The team will look to grow from the experience it gained one year ago with the hopes of ending the 2011 campaign at the top of the HCAC. The Jackets will return 10-of-11 starters on the offensive side of the ball, one year after averaging 25.2 points per game against conference foes and equaling their highest scoring average for a season since the 2001 squad. DC put nearly 30

BLACK 26

points per game on the board in its six victories and set a Justin F. Coressel Stadium scoring record in a 49-7 thrashing of Anderson on October 23. Other highlights for the offense included a 33-0 victory at Earlham in the first-ever HCAC clash between the two programs and a three-week stretch in which Defiance outscored Earlham, Anderson and Rose-Hulman by a combined score of 123-28 in a trio of lopsided victories. The high-powered attack was charged by the explosive thunder and lightning tandem of Drew Kuesel and Rick Powell. Each half of the duo averaged over 85 yards on the ground per outing to help Defiance churn out 198.8 yards per game. That clip rose to an HCAC-best 218.2 rushing yards per contest in eight conference tilts.

SEASON OUTLOOK American Kyle Longsdorf and his HCAC-leading 139 tackles, the squad should have plenty of options for the leadership role with eight returning starters in the lineup. The tenacious and experienced defensive unit ranked second among all HCAC teams in scoring defense, total defense, rushing defense, pass efficiency defense and sacks and should continue to improve with another year together on the gridiron. Others have taken notice of the Yellow Jackets as well, with Defiance getting picked second in the HCAC Preseason Poll. All signs point to a very exciting season for the Purple and Gold but it will be up to the 143-man roster and Taylor’s coaching staff to translate those lofty expectations into reality in 2011.

While the Jackets will need to overcome the loss of All-

The goal of winning a conference championship is just one of four goals shared by each and every DC football team during the Taylor era. The program’s all-time winningest head coach and his staff strive to enable their student-athletes to reach their full potential as a person, a student and a football player. The second goal is for

the student-athlete to receive a college degree of his choice. Third is for the student-athlete to develop and enhance a vigorous work ethic that translates into success on and off the football field. The goal of competing for the HCAC Championship is the fourth and final goal of the Taylor philosophy. QUARTERBACK Rick Powell will lead the DC offense once again in 2011, marking the fourth-straight season that the two-time AllHCAC signal caller has been under center for the Purple and Gold. Powell came into his own as a junior, rushing for 998 yards, throwing for 1,257 and accounting for 18 of the team’s 25 touchdowns. He enters his final collegiate campaign looking to build upon that breakout season, in which he ranked fifth among all NCAA Division III quarterbacks in rushing yards per game. Powell also finished second among all HCAC players in both rushing yards and total yards of offense per outing. While Powell will see the vast majority of the snaps, sophomores Garrett Teague and Aaron Spence ensure that the quarterback position will remain in good hands for the foreseeable future.

BACKFIELD A key to the success of the Jackets in 2011 will be the health of All-HCAC running back Drew Kuesel, who set career highs one year ago with 702 rushing yards and six scores in eight games of work. The senior provides DC with a power option to keep opposing defenses on edge. Sophomore Joey Chester has also recovered from an injury-shortened rookie campaign and will spell Kuesel after carrying the rock 35 times in 2010.

OFFENSIVE LINE A source of concern throughout the preseason has been the front line for DC. While the starting unit is missing just one piece from 2010, injuries have depleted the Jackets of depth at the vital unit. One spot that is not in question will be the center position, where All-HCAC standout Ryan Black is set to anchor the line during his senior season. Black is projected to be flanked by fellow seniors Kent Corthell and Bryant Green, with sophomores Mitch Smith and Corey Williams also in the mix.

TIGHT END Another All-HCAC performer will return at the tight end slot for DC, as senior Andy Cessna gives the Jackets a large target in the passing game and a valuable blocker in the ground attack. Cessna will be backed up by junior Patrick Hartman and sophomore Matt Oliver. WIDE RECEIVER Although the Defiance offense does most of its damage on the turf, it is not for lack of options at the wide receiver position. Senior Nick Wiedenhoft will be joined by junior Jon Carrabino in the starting lineup, with senior Keaton Wolfe, junior Aaron Choice and second-year players Brian Mircovich and Mo Garces also set to see time.

DEFENSIVE LINE The HCAC’s leading sack artist, Joemese Scott, will return for his final year with the Purple and Gold, after earning All-HCAC honors by ranking 34th in the nation with 8.5 sacks last season. Scott added 47 hits, with 12 coming for lost yardage and will be joined in the trenches by juniors D.J. Brigham and Gregg Pickett. Sophomores Michael Carrabino and Pat Rieg will team with rookie Jamario Belton to relieve the starters. LINEBACKER A pair of All-HCAC playmakers will anchor the Jackets from their linebacker slots, as junior Hunter Robertson and sophomore Patrick McDonald

ROBERTSON finished second and third on the roster in tackles in 2010, teaming for 125 hits, 13.5 stops for lost yardage and four sacks. The duo will have help, with junior James Buari, sophomore Blaine McGowan and newcomer Darshawn Walker expected to contribute. DEFENSIVE BACK The one player that will be leaned on the most to fill the shoes of Longsdorf will be Tony Sierra. The two-time First-Team All-HCAC safety posted 38 tackles, eight passes defended and two interceptions as a sophomore and is joined in the secondary by senior safety Eric Rubio. Junior Kyle Keegan and sophomore Chrys Killebrew will man the cornerback positions, while a host of underclassmen are also set to battle for time. SPECIAL TEAMS For the first time in four seasons, DC will not have the leg of Tom Foos to power the special teams. Sophomore Aaron Spence could step in to handle the punting duties, while the kicking responsibilities will need to be clarified as the season approaches. Tony Sierra will anchor the returns team, after ranking first in the HCAC will 11.0 yards per punt return one year ago.
