A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT....... Dear Fellow DC Fan: We at Defiance College are extremely proud of our wonderful athletic program and of the many other activities taking place at DC. The students whom you are watching today are an important part of our larger DC family, and they are among the approximately 1000 DC students who benefit from the dedication and assistance provided by our wonderful faculty, alumni, staff, administrators, and friends. Students at DC receive a wide range of distinctive experiences as we strive to offer our students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. What does this mean? It means that our students start working with us before they even start their classes to put together distinctive Personal Success Plans, so that we can work with them to tailor their DC education and experiences to their own individual interests and goals. Throughout their four years at Defianc, our students benefit from a broad range of activities and experiences that are structured both to help them achieve their individual dreams and also to enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. As part of that approach, we work with our students to help them develop their own Defiance College Resume. DC students also participate in a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities that give students distinctive hands-on experiences in their relevant fields. Just to name a few examples, we are proud of the work that our Criminal Justice students do in investigating cold cases for Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in Detroit; our Education students get hands-on experience working in classrooms as early as their freshman year; Science students run and manage a 200+ acre wildlife preserve; through our Business Advantage Program, business, marketing, finance, sales, accounting and other students get hands-on experiences creating and running actual businesses. I could go on and on in terms of the different opportunities our Communications, Sport Management, Pre-Med, Social Work, Graphic Design, and students in many other areas. We are all partucularly proud of the great work that our students have done running Project 701, a unique student-run, separately-legally-incorporated non-profit, in which DC students create, develop, run and manage service projects. From working with the two hospitals in town to run a free primarycare clinic to micro-finance lending; from providing computer repair services to packing backpacks full of food for needy elementary school students to take home on weekends, our DC students are gaining the tools to become entrepreneurial life-long learners, while also helping to address important local, regional, national, and international issues. In fact, Defiance College was recently named one of the top 20 schools in the country in terms of community service and engagement. DC students also get unique opportunities to travel both domestically and internationally. Under our DC Global Program, we actually guarantee an international opportunity in the junior and senior year to students in good standing who successfully complete our full four-year program. Over the past two years, DC students have traveled to Cambodia, Belize, Tanzania, Ghana, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, London, Paris, Vienna, Prague, Hungary, Slovakia, and more. Similarly, on a domestic level, DC students have traveled to New York City, Washington, D.C., Portland (OR), Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Kansas City, Des Moines, Denver, Selma, Memphis, Chicago, Nashville, Florida, South Carolina, New Mexico and elsewhere. We are very proud of the opportunities we give our students to open their eyes, raise their sights, open their minds, and , in many cases, open thier hearts as well. I hope you notice some of the recent improvements to our athletic facilities. Our George M. Smart Athletic Center (“the George”) began operation in February 2012, and we are thrilled with the opportunities our students have to use this 84,000 square foot facility, with its 200-meter indoor track, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, batting cages, fitness center, weight room, and much more. The new turf on our football/lacrosse field was installed in December 2012, and we also recently renovated our outdoor E. Stevens Dix Tennis Courts. The new bleachers and improved flooring in our Weaner Center has also enhanced the experience for our fans, and more improvements are underway across campus this year as well. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers, and staff for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go above and beyond on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D’ all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable fculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are proud to host. Rudy Yovich - Director of Athletics ryovich@defiance.edu • (419) 783-2380
Rudy Yovich was named director of athletics at Defiance College during the summer of 2014. Yovich comes to Defiance after serving as the director of athletics at Owens Community College in Toledo since 2011 and was assistant director of athletics at Indiana University-Purdue University in Fort Wayne from 2003 to 2011. While at Owens, Yovich led an athletic department in which student-athletes improved both academically and athletically. During the 2012-13 season, student-athletes qualified for a record four national championships with every program qualifying for a regional tournament. The school had five All-Americans, nine Academic All-Americans, and two All-American Academic Teams, first-ever in school history. The school finished that academic year ranked 23rd nationally out of 401 schools in the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Learfield Director’s Cup standings, the school’s highest finish ever. “In talking with the administration and athletic department staff at Defiance, I was impressed with their passion for student-athlete service. I look forward to building upon the amazing tradition of DC Athletics, while continuing to expand our involvement within the community.” Yovich’s experience clearly demonstrates his commitment to emphasizing the “student” portion of the term student-athlete. Upon his arrival at Owens, he implemented an action plan to increase departmental grade point average (GPA). This past academic year, more than 90 percent of second-year student-athletes graduated or transferred to four-year institutions. While serving at the NCAA Division I Indiana University-Purdue University in Fort Wayne, Yovich had direct administrative oversight of a portion of the department’s athletic programs as well as two student organizations. He previously held media relations and marketing positions with the United Soccer Conference, Fort Wayne; Christian Brothers University, Memphis; and Erie Otters Hockey Club in Erie, Pa. Yovich earned his bachelor’s degree at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and an MBA in sports management from Columbia Southern University.

Jodie Holava, head softball coach at Defiance College, became the assistant athletic director at Defiance during the summer of 2014. Holava, who will retain her coaching position, is the all-time wins leader in the history of the softball program. Holava arrived at DC in 2006. Under her mentorship, the softball program has won three conference championships and finished among the top three in final standings in NCAA regionals during four of her years as head coach. In addition, the softball team and individual student-athletes have earned dozens of All-Conference honors in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The program has also excelled academically, earning numerous scholastic honors. Holava is active across the Defiance campus. In addition to her coaching responsibilities, she is an instructor in the First Year Experience program and serves on numerous academic and student life committees. Holava earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Mount Union in athletic training with a minor in health and secondary education. She holds a master’s degree in education from Cleveland State University. Before coming to Defiance, she was assistant softball coach at Notre Dame College of Ohio. She also coached the Northcoast Spirit, a traveling softball team sanctioned by the National Softball Association. The Spirit went to the NSA World Series each year with Holava as their coach.

Defiance College Sports Medicine features some of the finest facilities in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and NCAA Division III. After recent renovations were completed to the athletic facilities on the campus of Defiance College, Yellow Jackets student-athletes now have access to one of the most comprehensive departments in the region. Boasting three separate locations within the Defiance Athletics sports complex, the Athletic Training team makes sure the student-athletes here at Defiance College receive the best treatment possible. The DC Athletic Training main office is located on the south side of the Karl H. Weaner Community Center. The staff also works out of athletic training rooms located within Justin F. Coressel Stadium, as well as the Duane C. Hocking Athletic Training room within the new George M. Smart Athletic Center. Under the direction of head athletic trainer Kevin Tong, Associate Athletic Trainer Kathleen Westfall and Assistant Athletic Trainer Andrew Bacon, Defiance College Athletic Training works tirelessly to make sure our student-athletes receive the highest level of care possible. Defiance also features a Master’s Athletic Training program that will begin in 2016. The staff also features a comprehensive medical team that features physicians in a variety of medical specialties.

THIS IS DEFIANCE COLLEGE Defiance College is a private, liberal arts-based college providing outstanding academic programs and co-curricular activities for a student body of nearly 1,000 students. Our student/faculty ratio is a low 11/1, allowing professors to get to know their students personally in order to tailor the academic experience. They stretch thinking skills in ways that prepare students for success, often augmenting classroom theory with actual practice, bringing in valuable internships, job shadowing, learning trips, and cooperative education projects with outside experiences. An interdisciplinary focus and distinctive curriculum ensure that students develop their skills in critical thinking and problem-solving. Students can enrich their education in any major with honors courses, participation in honors symposia, and international travel opportunities through DC’s popular Carolyn M. Small Honors Program. Many of our programs of study give the opportunity for students to be immersed in research in their discipline. For example, Restoration Ecology majors conduct field research at the 200-acre Thoreau Wildlife Sanctuary just two miles from campus. Internships and field experiences within each major will help develop the skills, abilities and knowledge to solidify career goals and strengthen one’s resume. We know there’s simply no better way to truly understand a subject than by taking what’s learned in the classroom and applying it out in the real world. Whatever the major, a student at Defiance can take their learning from the classroom into our community, across the United States or around the world. Defiance College is home to the nationally acclaimed McMaster School for Advancing Humanity, a program that is unique among colleges and universities across the country. McMaster gives students incredible opportunities to conduct research and service in specially-designed projects around the world. Any student can apply to participate, regardless of major. For example, in a third world village in Cambodia or Belize or Tanzania, a student majoring in molecular biology major can analyze water safety, a digital forensic science student can instruct children on internet safety, an education major can teach in classrooms, and a business administration student can help a women’s organization create a business plan to open a new restaurant. The Presidential Service Leader Program, part of the McMaster School, is designed for students who have served and led their community in some way, and who want to continue that commitment at Defiance. Students can apply your academic expertise, leadership skills and service in Project 701, a one-of-a-kind, student-run nonprofit organization in which students create, develop and run their own business or project. Defiance is consistently recognized by the prestigious President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. We are at the forefront of colleges across the country that embrace service and engagement, and we incorporate it into a DC education. Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. The newest addition is the ASD Affinity Program supporting college students with ASD in reaching their full potential. Varying levels of academic, social and residential support are designed to aid students in meeting their personal and professional goals. ATHLETIC FACILITIES The Defiance College Athletic Department is housed in the McMaster Center. The McMaster Center is named in honor of Drs. Harold and Helen McMaster and has played an intricate part in the growth and development of Yellow Jacket athletics. The McMaster Center houses administration and coach’s offices, but is also where the Karl H. Weaner Center, McMaster Gymnasium and one of three athletic training facilities are housed. The Karl H. Weaner Center is the home of the Yellow Jacket men’s and women’s basketball programs as well as the volleyball program. The newly redesigned arena features new seating and floor, as well as a full working press box with internet connection and web casting capabilities. Adjacent to the McMaster Center, is the recently completed George M. Smart Athletic Center. The George, is an 84,000 square-foot field house which opened in February of 2012. The multi-purpose floor provides additional year-round training areas for all 22 varsity athletic programs, but is officially home to the DC indoor track and field teams. The George also boasts a full athletic training room, expanded fitness and free-weight McMaster Center areas and two full-lengh batting cages. Located near the McMaster Center are the Yellow Jacket athletic outdoor facilities which include Justin F. Coressel Stadium, Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field, Dix Tennis Courts, Sal Hench Field and Craig A. Rutter Field. Coressel Stadium is field turf, 4,000-seat facility that’s home to the Yellow Jacket football, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field programs. The facility contains locker rooms, concession stand, training room, team meeting room and a full-working press box with internet connection and web casting capabilities. Winsper-Knobel Field is the main competition facility for the DC men’s and women’s soccer teams. The natural grass field is located just east of the Dix Tennis Facility and Coressel Stadium. The field boasts a press tower with wireless internet access. In addition to the main playing surface, athletes have access to a warm-up and practice field located next to Winsper-Knobel Field. The Dix Tennis Courts are the main competition facility for the DC men’s and women’s tennis teams. In the summer of 2012, the Dix Tennis facility was renovated with a durable, crack resistant surface. The tennis courts are located just east of the Weaner Center. In addition to the outdoor tennis courts, the tennis programs have access to four indoor tennis courts located in The George.. The Yellow Jacket softball team calls Sal Hench Field home. The field was built in 1999-2000 in honor of long-time supporter of the College and DC athletics, Sal Hench. The field features open-faced dugouts and on-field bullpens as well as a two-story press box with concession stand, All-Conference “Wall of Fame” and full sound system. The outfield dimensions are 210 feet all around with a 28-foot by 12 foot inning-by-inning scoreboard in right field which was added in the spring of 2014. Craig A. Rutter Field is the home site for the DC Baseball program. Rutter Field sits in the center of the CD athletics complex. The field features a unique crushed brick infield with all grass baselines and a compacted limestone warning track that accents a Kentucky Bluegrass and Perennial Rye outfield. All this is complimented by visiting and home dugouts, bullpens and the “Green Monster” in center field. In 2004, a press box was added and is equipped with full sound capabilities which provide the Yellow Jackets and their fans with an energetic pre-game atmosphere.

YELLOW JACKETS IN THE COMMUNITY Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary by exploring academic boundaries, taking on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and becoming engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience. PURPLE & GOLD CLUB The Purple and Gold Club Inc. was founded in the early 1970’s by Defiance community members who wanted to do something extra for all the student-athletes at Defiance College. Since its inception, the club has continually grown and has exceeded 225 members. The club serves to provide both financial assistance and personal support for the entire athletics department. For over 40 years, the supporters of the Purple and Gold Club have made Defiance College a better experience for all of the studentathletes.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT PHILOSOPHY The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will

be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. HEARTLAND COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE Originally founded as the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference, the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference has been in existance for over 25 years and has gone through several changes throughout the years. In June of 1987, the presidents of six private Indiana colleges and universities announced the formation of an athletic conference to allow their students to “live out” the ideal of the scholar athlete. The announcement came after 19 months of meetings among the institution’s presidents, athletic directors, and faculty athletic representatives. The ICAC was formed as an “academic” athletic conference, combining outstanding private education with top-notch intercollegiate athletics. Lewis Salter was President of Wabash College when the league was formed. The greatest advantage of the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference is that its formation allowed schools to restore athletic rivalries that date back to the 1800’s. Conference sports include baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, football, soccer, tennis, and track. In addition, a championship is decided in the non-mandatory sports of swimming and wrestling. On May 24, 1988, just less than one year after its formation, two more of Indiana’s premier small colleges, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Taylor University joined the league, bringing the total number of schools to eight. Taylor was involved in the ICAC’s first meetings in the spring of 1987, but declined membership until 1988. The 1990-91 season marked the first complete year of competition among all eight schools in all eightvarsity sports with soccer joining the picture in the fall of 1990. The 1992-93 school year brought with it much discussion and many meetings in an attempt to bring women’s teams into the ICAC. After a long year of planning and a constitutional rewrite, women’s teams joined the ICAC late in the 1992-93 school year with 1993-94 the first year of co-ed competition within the ICAC. The 1998-99 school year brought significant changes in the conference. With the additions of Bluffton College, the College of Mount St. Joseph, and Wilmington College and the departure of DePauw University and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference changed its name to become the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. As an extension of the ICAC, the HCAC is an eight school academic athletic conference, which represents a revised version the old Hoosier-Buckeye Conference. The 1999-2000 school year saw yet more changes. Wabash’s competition in the 1999 football season marked its last involvement in the HCAC. Defiance College joined the league, beginning competition in the spring of 2000. In January of 2001, Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, was accepted as a member. Transylvania began competition in the fall 2001 season. In July of 2006, Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana, was accepted as the conference’s ninth member. Rose Hulman began competition in the fall of 2006. As part of a year-long celebration in 2008-09, the league celebrated its 10th anniversary as the restructured HCAC. Each institution invited campus administrators, faculty, faculty athletic representatives, current or former athletic staff, alumni, and student-athletes. Also, the conference office invited current and former conference personnel, NCAA Division III select staff, and other key supporters of the HCAC. Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana was accepted as the 10th member of the conference in October of 2009 and began competition in the fall of 2010. On the playing field, HCAC member schools have had a national impact, highlighted by national champions in several sports and two schools making trips to the NCAA Division III basketball Final Four in the 1990s. Since the formation of the HCAC, members have produced 62 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, 164 All-Americans, and 163 team qualifiers for NCAA Division III national championships. The league continues to seek growth and excellence on and off the playing field in the years to come. Tyler Ault will begin his third season as the head coach of the Defiance College Yellow Jacket men’s team and second year for the women’s tennis programs in 2015-16.
team captain for three years. Ault also served as a student assistant coach for one season. In addition, Ault served on the NCAA Student Athlete Advisory Council for two years and was also a DC Ambassador and college representative. After graduating from Defiance College, Ault spent two years working as a revenue cycle analyst at ProMedica, as well as a parttime instructor at the University of Toledo.
A 2010 graduate of DC, Ault was a two-time All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference team award winner for the Yellow Jackets men’s tennis program in 2009 and 2010. His experience as a student-athlete and his leadership on the tennis courts for the Purple and Gold added to the transition into the head coach of the programs.
Ault earned his Bachelor’s degree in business administration with a minor in information technology in 2010. Ault went on to earn his Master’s degree from the University of Toledo in business administration with a specialization in leadership.
As a student-athlete, Ault graduated holding the Yellow Jackets men’s tennis record with 102 wins in his career. The Oregon, Ohio native was a four-year letterwinner for the Yellow Jackets and was the
