HELLO

he beginning of the year has come and gone, we can’t be “getting into the swing of things” anymore, we are in the swing of things. Hopefully that also means you have started on your chosen journey for the year and will be amongst those celebrating come the end of 2013. Part of that journey may mean making your mark on the world and not

waiting for the winds of change to come to you, there really is no time better than the present, our cover feature in the likes of DJ Mtshepang is indicative of that philosophy, that you can achieve anything at any age, just so long as you believe in something and are willing to work hard to get it. Knowing that decision may not be popular with the masses often deters many, but it is also those who push forward with their belief regardless of the masses’ disapproval who succeed and break new grounds and in doing so create the new “cool”. In the past 5-10 years, deep house was not considered cool, it was for a select group of individuals and not for the masses. Fast forward and no party is complete without at the deep house soulful sound, everyone has become an expert and to be an accomplished, respected DJ means, it’s what you play and it’s what you are good at. In this issue of DEEP we ask the question of “how deep is deep” has all out deep become the new “cool”? Well if it has, thank God to those DJ’s who were resilient in their belief, regardless of the masses.

LEGEND REVIEW

Vick Lavender H

ats off to this issue’s legend, Vick Lavender who has been in the house music industry for well over 20 years, born in Monroe Louisiana and moved to Chicago only four years later one could safely say he was already well on course in his journey into the world of house music. It’s easy to recognize a Vick Lavender production from its

10

unique Latin / African elements mixed with a touch of JazzySoul, it’s just bliss to the ears and it is what the legend has been mastering throughout the years. Vick Lavender started his DJing career as far back as the 80’s in his home town of Chicago, one couldn’t have been given a better platform to start a career as a house DJ, Chicago was where it all began after all. Take

nothing away from the legend though, it takes a whole lot more than just luck and a good start to stay relevant in the ever changing house industry for over two decades. Vick Lavender was part of Mr. A.L.I (African. Latin. Influences) an international production team and being a member of Glenn Undergrounds “Strictly

Jazz Unit” and eventually going solo to start his own digital label “Sophisticado Recordings”, giving us classics like ‘Fist Kiss’ and ‘After Party’ he needs no introduction just let his track record do the speaking. Vick Lavender speaks house music and gets DEEP MAG’s salute as our House Music Legend.

BLACK BERRY 10

P

robably the most anticipated smartphone since the iPhone came out, it’s finally here- the Blackberry 10. No one else is going say it, so I will- it’s the iPhone and Samsung’s galaxy series- done the black berry way. It’s all kinds of sexy with a complete software overhaul; its user-friendly interface will be a hit with Blackberry users. The design is a marvel to look at, curves and smooth lines at every turn; it stands head and shoulders above its previous devices such

12

as the Blackberry Bold and Curve lines. It’s all touch with a few control buttons on the sides, a clean, crisp and creative creation overall. The phone runs on the new BlackBerry 10 operating system which is sure to reignite faith in the brand after many flaws and short falls with previous versions. Blackberry 10 is a completely new offering - blackberry has outstripped the old BB OS7 base and rebuilt from the ground up. The new operating system is one that matches and could possibly surpass the likes of Android and IOS with a

new user interface and a complete new experience for device users. The Blackberry 10 will be available in South Africa in late MWarch, it will be worth the wait- this late release date gives you more than enough time to save up and possibly be ready to pay the estimated price of R7000. With that price, it better deliver on its promise as a completely new experience for users. 13

P

aying tribute to Victor Ntoni “People never get the flowers while they can still smell them”. Celebrating the life of the legendary late Victor Ntoni who not only loved and pioneered jazz, but also played a role in the deep house music industry. The kwa-Langa born musician was a bassist, composer and singer who as a teenager, joined the Dollar brand trio which included the Cape

Tonian world renowned pianist Abdullah Ibrahim, also working with the likes of Hughes Masekela and Abigail khubeka. His role in music was selfless, passionate and compassionate as he was involved in a number of initiatives one of which was being involved in a music tuition for deprived musicians during the apartheid era. One of the most significant moments of his career, was when he directed a musical titled “Meropa” which toured Europe in 1995.One who was always open to collaboration, in 1989 he founded the band Afro Cool Concept with Darius Brubeck. In the nineties he worked with Hilton Schilder, Vusi Khumalo and Khaya Mahlangu in the band Iconoclast. Not forgetting Ntoni’s last release “Heritage” nominated in the 2004 South African Music awards, showing that Mr Ntoni was certainly one of SA’s unsung heroes, but those who knew him would definitely testify to his legendary status. He will forever be remembered for his contribution to music and his sterling performance in the Black Coffee africa rising dvd, where he was featured on “wathula nje”. We as a nation have lost a father, friend, teacher and a legendary musician, but his legacy will live forever...long live Victor Ntoni our memories of you will live forever. BRIDGES FOR MUSIC

B

eing part of the house music industry comes with a mirage of perks. Free tickets to the best gigs, VIP Lounges, casual conversations with top DJ’s, that’s the life. But every so often we are invited to be part of something more significant and powerful than that next shot of tequila, with a Euphonik track playing in the background. One such event was the Music Workshop hosted by the Bridges for music in Kliptown, Soweto. This was one workshop we as Deepmag could not miss. House music is relevant, house music can be used as a tool for development and house music can be empowering- these are the lessons taught and learned from this workshop. As their website states: “We believe in electronic music to bridge gaps, inspire people and enhance opportunities in disadvantaged areas across the world”. Bridges for music hosted an event in the most unlikely of places, the kliptown youth hall, which is in the heart of the highly under-developed township of kliptown. The other workshop was hosted in Langa township, in the Western Cape. This, more than anything, shows you what they were trying to achieve and emphasise. Host DJ’s Black coffee, Ritchie Hawtin, Vinny da Vinci and Culoe da Song in such conditions put their point across- music bridges all gaps, divides and differences. The workshop also sought to explore the gap between the use of internet and digital platforms in developed and developing countries. One such display was the live streaming of a DJ tutorial by Ritchie Hawtin onto a live website in front of a much impressed crowd.

Black Coffee was subjected to his first experience of digital broadcasting while playing at the Boiling Room, in Cape Town. A venue where DJ’s play with their back facing the crowd while facing a hoard of camera’s which stream live to thousands of house music fans on a website. Black Coffee described the experience as “weird”. I agree, but such is the growth of digital music that there is an entire nation of house lovers who log on to such sites religiously. Further conversation on bridging gaps, the workshop’s host -Valentino Barrioseta shared the European perception of South African house music: -”with international DJ’s touring South Africa it shows great perception of your music. When DJ’s come to South Africa- they want to come back which is very important. The South African brand is becoming as big a brand as berlin or Detroit”. To start the workshop off, a conversation with Vinny da Vinci unearthed some powerful stories on his progression from an underground, unknown DJ to a household brand. From a small town in Pretoria, to a stint in Hilbrow, Vinny said he took all the opportunities that he was given and made sure he used them well. “Maybe the best way to do it (to start out as a DJ) is to focus within your area, where you come from, your group of friends, play for people, play for your friends, play for people at parties, even if it’s for free, you will never know who is at that party. Use your network to uplift you”. One last piece of advice given to DJ’s was: “Stick with the genre you play. Be you.” 19

Conversations with Richie Richie Hawtin, on his first trip to South Africa, shared his experience of the African music scene: “I didn’t know house music was so big down here”-”it’s beyond just music, it’s about more than just gigs”- “the Energy and anticipation is on another level”. On music being a tool for empowerment he had this to say: “the aim is to make a difference” - “touch people with music and sonically. Talk to people through music without knowing the language”. And a few words of advice for young DJ’s: “You must learn to walk before you can run. If there is not a strong foundation of music under such projects, it loses its soul”“Look around you, some of the people that can help you are right here”

The importance of such workshops ca

Hawtin and Black Coffee Black Coffee shared his thoughts on the role of music- “ I’ve experienced how much South Africans love music. I’ve seen the effect the music has on people “-”Music does more than just talk”. This was shown by an emotional end to the workshop when a fan praised Black Coffee as his inspiration and motivation for young DJ’s still fighting the good fight of house music. UNDERGROUND DEEP SESSIONS.

Sundayphola T

he Phola Sunday sessions are the brain child of one girl who didn’t wait to be accepted into the house scene, but rather took it upon herself to blow the industry away. If you thought DJ Zinhle was the only female powerhouse of house, than you’ve got another thought coming. Nobuhle Nhlapo started what is today known as the Sunday Phola sessions back 2007 and has established herself and the brand into one of the must look out for sessions of the future, so if you didn’t know, we’ll school you.

• Please tell us what the Sundayphola is and how it originated? Sunday Phola sessions for female DJ’s by a female DJ...I started The sessions to create a PLAYGROUND for us females where we can experiment and go crazy. • How long have the sessions been running for? I started them in 2007, stopped when the previous venue closed Down, now they are back fresher and better. • We take it the sessions are on Sundays, why Sunday? Sundays’ are chilled, a great day to build a brand, network and listen to great music while at it. • Tell us about the type of music showcased at the 24

sessions and as well as the type of crowed you often attract? Good music, deep, soul, funk, lounge, deepFunk. We often attract people that want to hear/see something different. • Which musicians have played at the sessions and who else do you still want to attract? Zeejay, Sue, Thobs, Phillz, LadyLisa, LadyKate, Boipelo, djLerato, missThuly and the gents that have supported Vinny da Vinci, Jiyane, maze, Brian Blaq, TrevTheJapanese.

• Do you think the SA house scene needs more house music sessions or do you believe we have enough and should strengthen what we have? The pie is big enough for all of us. Patience, pray, plan and most importantly investing in own brand. • Where would you like to see Sundayphola in the future, what else do you still want to achieve with them? Would love to host international acts... maybe tour SA with the girls one never knows what could happen. DETAILS: The sessions are held every last Sunday of the month 2pm until late - Free entry for now – Rockerfella (Molapo). By: Imkhitha Mkwebula

SA Miami INVASION 2013

Well the names for the 2013 Miami winter music conference edition have been announced and it’s a mouth-watering line-up, but let’s face it, it’s more mouth-watering to know you’re the DJ who will be hitting the Miami beach’s come March. This year’s edition will see the likes of DJ Fresh, Euphonik, Shimza and they’ll be joined by Cyndo, Tira, Dj Zandy, Zakes Bantwini as well as Monique Bingham, yes, as a South African act. This will be the 4th edition of the SA Miami invasion and it has become one of the more popular showcase of the event and has seen some of SA’s biggest names perform, this year will no different.

NEWS House Welcome for Miguel Miguel is coming to the country on 2 March, Johannesburg and Cape Town 3 March. If you didn’t know this your girlfriend does, but that’s not the point of this story, this story is about the opening acts Miguel will have in the likes of Donald and Zakes Bantwini amongst others. Again, your girlfriend would like this show. However, with a Zakes Bantwini performance, I might just go, just to see that. We do hope he will be performing some new stuff from his album, but non-the less just to see Zakes perform live on stage is always a treat.

METRO’S 2013

With the delays and confusion that plagued the 2012 Metro FM awards, much was anticipated from the 2013 edition, bigger and better and honestly, they didn’t disappoint. Opening with a Soil and Zakwe performance seemed to set up what was to be the tone for the rest of the night, musical, upbeat and simply spectacular, I for one could not remember the last time I watched an award show where performance after performance was enjoyable. In between the awarding of the Metro trophies we saw a Malinga and Oscar performance, that was not the much anticipated performance though,

MTV base and Klipdrift, a mighty COMBINATION

that was yet to come. We saw Khuli Chana melo things down a little with his hip hop hit “tswa daar”, what would the Metro awards be without a Big nuz and Tira performance, without the 3rd member Masheshwa, who’s been a missing figure for some time now in their performances mmmmhhhh? Without a doubt, my favourite performance was the return of DJ Pespi, performing with Monique Bingham, this after he had won best dance album, marking a return of DEEP house in its purest sense, we saw Mafikizolo debut their latest track “khona”, I’m not sure if Mafikizolo is a house duo, but the latest track sounds more house than I’ve ever heard them do and I’m liking it a lot. A night that seemed to be more of a celebration of house, seemed to just get better with the awarding of best music video to Jullian Gomes, who was on Deep magazine’s cover for our 2nd issue and kalawa Jazzmee seemed to finally get the recognition it always complains of not getting, with the Kalawa Jazzmee compilation album, winning best compilation and Professor walking away with a trophy too. The peak of the night was yet to come though, with the most anticipated performance of the night finally happening, Dr Malinga took to the stage with Vetkoeok&Mahoota to perform “via Orlando”. On the night though house was the winner, trumping all other genres.

The incredible wave that is the house music genre is undoubtedly taking over the country and as we see more house events popping up from the annual calendar, more seem to be targeting Cape Town as the destination to be. No complaints from my side, beautiful beaches, amazing sites and oh so beautiful people, throw in Mtv base and klipdrift and you have the URBAN SMOOTH SESSIONS. On 1 March on the St Yves Beach club on the Atlantic Seaboard, you can go and see MiCasa (@MiCasaMusic), electronicadance giants Goldfish (@goldfishlive) and newcomer Jimmy Nevis (@JimmyNevis), DJ Lulo Café (@LuloCafe), DJ p.H (@iam_ph) and DJ Loyd (@DJ LoydSA. There are many house sessions happening around SA at the moment, but this is one that stands not only because of its sponsorship, but also the panoramic location, Cape Town is a stunning location for any event, throw in great 27 music and it’s a making for a sensational day.

I won’t lie to you, when my DEEP Mag colleague, photographer Thembani Manganyi, suggested I try out this app, I was sceptical. An application that records a sound from TV or radio and then searches through the internet for downloading options and videos, too far-fetched! There have been many attempts at creating this great application, one such attempt was an app in the Sony Ericsson Cybershot range back in 2010. I used it twice and it succeeded in finding international tracks such as JayZ’s “Death of Auto tune” and John Mayer’s “Heartbreak and war fare”. But it failed miserably when tasked with finding local house music tracks, but this one is different. Testing it out at a house party, we recorded a track no one knew that the DJ was playing. Surely it did find the mysterious song hiding on the net as a Naste Nev track. I’m sold and impressed. DJ’s beware; we now know what tracks you playing and who made them. Yeka Uku claima! MTSHEPANG

THE FUTURE OF DEEP HOUSE… LET’S TAKE A PEEK. It isn’t every day one can say after three years in the South African house industry they’ve worked with every big name they’ve always dreamt of working with, but when you are both determined and confident like DJ Mtshepang, that is easily your reality. Driven by vision, determination and hard work, Mtshepang has solidified his name as the future of deep house if we are not in the future already, with a sound so unique and intricate one could argue he was born to do this. Not content to just being another DJ/producer who follows trends, he has taken it upon himself to work and refine a sound that defines him and his love for rhythm and beats as well as quality and with it catching the attention of the world and legends like Lars Behrenroth of deepershades of house. Listening to his work, one knows this is the moment in history we will all remember as the beginning of greatness. It is DJ’s like him that are further more proving the point that deep house has become the new cool. His may not be the commercial name we’ve become accustomed to with other young DJ’s in SA, let that not fool you though about the hype surrounding this future legend, his built a foundation so deep and solid, the only way from here for him is legendary status, we had a chat with him

about his achievements an future plans: DM: Please give us a brief description of where you are from and how you would define yourself? 1. DJ Mtshepang, Tshepo Chris Nokeri, born and bred at Malamulele in Giyani, Limpopo. Based in the heart of Johanessburg. A student, music composer-producer and DJ. Ocha Records (Brooklyn, NYC) signed, in consortium with Deeper Shades Of House, Soul Candi Records &amp, half of Deuce Concept (with DJ Romz Deluxe). DM: You’ve had such a short career, in fact you’ve been in the industry for approximately 3 years and yet you’ve amassed so much respect and applause for your work, what is it that your doing, that other young upcoming DJ’s/producers aren’t doing and should be learning from you? 2. Simply, it’s about determination, the love and passion for music. My motto is; “Dream, plan, work hard and be patient”. There is nothing that I am doing, that others are not doing. We all have a piece of the cake, it is all determined by how hard one works and how patient one is. DM: You have such an intricate use of instruments and seem highly influenced by African beats and rhythm, how would you define your sound currently and where you’d like to see it go?

35

3. Glad you touched that, mainly my productions are African rhythminfluence no matter what atmosphere the sound of the song is. “In midst of happiness” released on Soul Candi Records was a reflection of the transition I am making; it is called growing up not moving with the trends.

5. I’m still signed under Ocha Records – I have an album deal with them. It is simply a matter of growing and expressing my art through various channels. Besides Karanga Records, I have been blessed to be part of the formation Deuce Concept (a duo group with DJ Romz Deluxe).

DM: As young as you are both literally and in the industry, you took a bold move and started your own record label, Karanga Records, was that a

DM: Karanga Records, you say you want to operate differently from other record labels, tell us a bit more about that?

sign of frustration maybe that other record labels weren’t representing the genre in the way you’d like see? 4. Frustration? No. I thought it was best to establish a platform where we can embrace and express well our arts and also have freedom with our arts.

6. We have merged Karanga Records and Music AtLast, with DJ Romz Deluxe. Still infant stages; cannot give out the formula in which we are going to use to do things yet, but big plans put ahead.

DM: You are currently signed to Ocha Records, what kind of relationship/ agreement do you have with them now that you also own your own record label? 36

DM: You’ve worked with a lot of big names in the industry, one of which being Lars Behrenroth, appearing on the #401 deeepershades radio show in the guest mix, how big was that for you especially since you have a similar radio show, “Afrika’s night” on Greece web-station?

7. It simply illustrates the reflection of growth; it is always feels great working with Deeper Shades, (wider deep house audience). I have another guest mix coming out soon, it will take people through a musical journey, smooth deep-house future classics on 114BPM. DM: Should we expect anything from DJ Mtshepang this year, a full mix or compilation perhaps?

8. Main projects; DJ Mtshepang debut album, Deuce Concept duo album and Music AtLast compilation. Have some other projects with Soul Candi, Peng Music and other labels. DM: What is your relationship with Soulistic music, if there even is a relationship there? 9. As an artist one of the most important things you have to build, is relationships with other labels and artist. Been having talks with the label

manager about a couple of things, best not explain anything yet. DM: Who would DJ Mtshepang kill to work with that he hasn’t already and why? 10. Haha, already worked with all the people I have always dreamt of working with; CASAMENA, Lars Benrenroth, Ananda Projects, Tamara Wellons, MXO, Lungi Naidoo and for sure my partner in DJ Romz Deluxe. Would be great being in studio with

Zonke, Zaki Ibrahim and Maleahloka, they are talented. What a talent and breath of fresh air this young man is for the industry, we expect only great things to come from DJ Mtshepang.

VOCALIST Soulstar

Born and bred in Zone 7 Sebokeng in the Vaal Velaphi Sylvester Mtimkulu also known as “SoulStar”,grew up as a very a problematic child, who among other things liked “uk’shay’ama dice(gambling)”,his mom out of worry and love for him asked Sandile to talk him to to stop his delinquent ways,so he did so and also invited Sylvester to join his band( Isichathamiya) so that’s how MUSIC SAVED Soulstar’s life. Soulstar gave us a glimps of his talent when he got featured on the hit single” Rock my world” which he co-wrote and co-produced(he also co-wrote and co-produced take it all off by black coffee and Zakes bantwini). We asked Soulstar how he felt about being part of the Africa Rising project and this is what he had to say about it: “ I felt very honoured&privilaged because Black Coffee was making History and I was part of it.sharing a stage with all those Amazing artists,24 piece orchestra,Amazing production,It was a the Highlight for all o ur careers& Rock My World became the first single of the Dvd.” Not only did Soulstar “rock” the nation with his feature on the hit single “rock my world” by Black Coffee,he Is also workin on his album with Black Coffee, working on a song with Culoe De Song, collaborating with Sai&Ribatone and is in talks with Zakes Bantwini about a collaboration in which Zakes has agreed to do with Soulstar. The Soulful Soulstar is definitely one of the most talented and gifted vocalists in the Country and is a “MUST LOOK OUT FOR” artist in 2013

MOST ANTICIPATED ALBUM RELEASES OF 2013/

By: Culoe de Song Title: Exodus Record label to be released under: Soulistic Music Release date: Late 2013 Exodus” the much anticipated 3rd album by Soulistic Music’s prodical son, Culoe de Song is a much anticipated house release for 2013 and how could it not be. Since his arrival at Soulistic, Culoe has cemented himself as one of the major artist under the label, but also has earned himself tremendous respect amongst his local and international peers. This 22 year olds track record is nothing short of unbelievable, at just 22 he has become one of the most renowned names in the house scene and counter parts older than him count him as inspiration. Having Black Coffee not only as your boss, but also

44

your label mate would be enough to intimidate anyone, but it seems not where Culoe is concerned, with a style unique to him and an obvious confidence when on the decks, this young man has stood his ground and claimed a piece of the cake for himself. This album will be an interesting listen not only because it will most likely be an incredible production, but because we can’t wait to hear if like his previous album, it will be as tribal or will we see a change in production and sound, non- the less, we are certain that much like “elevation” it will bare only hits.

By: Liquid deep Record label to be released under: Soul Candi/ independently Title: “Yet to be announced” Release date: End of March 2013 They have been putting out feelers recently, including a collaboration with DJ Kent and many have been asking where had they gone after the release of their debut album “fabrics of the heart”, well they are said to be making a come-back in 2013 and wrestling the group house kings crown from the populated market. The wave of success from their SAMA award winning debut album seemed to go on forever; the

whole album proved to be made of only hits, “fairy tale”, “BBM” and established this mid-tempo deep duo as a deadly combination of great production and vocals. With the emergence of Mi Casa and their success, one can’t help but be excited at the thought of these two giants battling it out for the mid-tempo deep house market, with each still having to prove they are no one hit wonders and can mould a loyal fan base.

By: DJ Kent Title: “to be announced” Record label to be released under: independently Release date: To be announced His last release “I can’t survive” produced hit after hit, “fall in love again” and “keep on moving” featuring Relo, “in her eyes” featuring Justin but the biggest of which being “falling” with vocalist Maleh, unleashing her fierce vocals on us before some people had discovered her, proving the man’s talent spotting skills. The Kent brand is one of the biggest in this country, collaborating with just about every big name in the house scene in the

country (Kentphonik), but his best gift must be his ability to go in and out of the electro and deep house scene at will and in the process amassing a huge following. This is a long awaited album by all accounts from a man who’s already guaranteed himself legendary status. The album name and release date is yet to be announced, but there have been murmurs of his return and let DEEP be the first to have said it, this will be one of the biggest releases of 2013.

When we asked Black Coffee whether Shana would be making a much wanted return to the scene this year, he said Shota is currently working on his latest solo work, “AfroRaw” unplugged. Now if you don’t know, Shota’s previous album which produced hits such as “Vuma” and “seng’khathele” featuring Euphonik was called Afro-Raw and hence the unplugged. Whether this is just a title or an actual unplugged version

we’ll have to wait and see, but we certainly hope it will be something different like an unplugged album because let’s face it, that would be quite an unexpected spanner thrown in the works in the SA house scene, provided it works out of cause. The Shana threesome is known for their ground breaking work, so the move would not be surprising to hear and who better to execute it than an already living musical genius and much respected musician like Shota, whatever the case, it sure promises to be a treat.

By: Goldfish Record label to be released under: EMI Title: Three second memory Release date: Late 2013 I for one cannot wait for this one “three second memory” is the latest album to be released sometime this year by goldfish, they are currently in the process of creating the album and have put a single out “take back tomorrow”, which predictably, is sounding impeccable, all be it somewhat different from the duo’s usual jazzy sound, this has to be one of the bigger albums to come out of the country for house lovers this year. The duo’s jazzy/ electro sound has made them a stand out

act at any line up in the world and their long stint touring places like London, Ibiza and the USA for the better part of 2012 is testament to that, but to record their latest work, they have returned home and will be touring while in the process of recording the album. DEEP dubs this album one of the biggest albums to look out for in the year 2013 and as one that will make serious waves. We said it first. By: Imkhitha Mkwebula

FUTURE TALENT TO LOOK OUT FOR

48

SHORDYSKILLS

There is no denying Sakhile Abraham Sikhonde AKA Shordyskills, (ShordySkills is a combination of two nicknames that were given to him in his childhood. Shordy because he is Short and Skills because he has God given Skills), is talented, but what makes him so is his ability to mix tracks that are soulfull and deep but still be able to coax and keep the crowd dancing to his tune and singing along to his delectable sound. His career as a DJ and producer started at the age of 17 when he used to watch his older brother and his friends DJ at home and decided to get on those decks after they leave just to “mess around”, that’s when he realised his passion and love for the house music and deejaying. Shordyskills’s music is inspired by a mixture of DJ’s like Euphonik, Black coffee, Kent and Fistaz Mixwell. Those are the four kings of course and he is the prince, as he describes himself. He has blessed the industry with his track” Time to let go Feat Lerato” which is his latest project, produced by himself and a very talented friend of his called Niqco. The Track is about letting go of a friendship, relationship or the past. This Track relates to a lot of people, because he makes music that people can relate to and that they can share with others. This year shordyskills is working on a number of things, which include working on his own headphone range, his album and his looking at playing all over Africa and hopefully beyond. So If I were you, I would certainly keep my eyes on this talented young man as he makes his mark in the industry and plots to blow the South African house music industry away with his talent and gift of making and mixing this beautiful genre called deephouse music. One of DEEP’s must look out for talents for 2013. By: Thembani Manganyi 49

emember last year, when everyone was dancing and singing to the hot song Hlokoloza, all 15 (there was a lot less, exaggerating for dramatic effect) versions of the same beat and lyrics. Well this article is going teach you how to avoid being the guy crying foul and screaming “that’s my song” while another DJ gets paid for it. The keyword in all this is, copyright. A copyright is a legal concept giving the creator of original work exclusive rights to it, usually for a limited time. Creating a copyright will allow you to take legal action against anyone reproducing fake copies of your work. Such works may include: literary works, musical works, artistic works, sound recordings, broadcasts, published editions and computer programs. This article will focus on sound recordings and musical works.

We cannot talk copyright with music without talking about SAMRO (Southern African Music Rights Organisation) which, according to their website, is the leading regional copyright administration businessdealing with the administration of music composers and authors performing rights. A little history lesson: SAMRO was founded in 1961 to protect the intellectual property of composers and authors to ensure all their work was accredited and compensated both locally and internationally The organisation has enjoyed much success as it now represents 12000 music creators and has: “built up a solid reputation as the primary representative of music Performing Rights in Southern Africa, and is well respected among its global peers as a leading music rights society.”

RIGHTS ADMINISTRATION AND LICENSING

Performing Rights- royalties are earned by music composers, lyricists and publishers when their musical works are performed in public – for example, on radio or TV, in a business environment or at a concert.

SAMRO administers the copyright and royalties of its members – being primarily music composers, authors and publishers.

Mechanical Rights - royalties are earned by composers, lyricists and publishers when their musical works are physically reproduced on a CD, DVD, tape, video, MP3 or computer hard drive, or as cell phone ringtones. Needle time Rights -royalties are earned by recording artists (such as musicians, singers or backing vocalists, and studio producers, who do not necessarily have to be the authors of the work) when one of their recorded performances is played or performed in public, for example, on a radio station.

54

Members who are composers and songwriters assign the rights of their musical works to SAMRO to administer. SAMRO, in turn, uses the assignments to license individuals and businesses that use music for business or commercial purposes. This includes shopping centres, nightclubs, television and radio broadcasters, and so on. SAMRO collects these licence fees from music users, which are paid out to members in the form of royalties during annual distribution cycles (after administration costs are deducted). By following simple procedures and paying the appropriate fees, individuals and businesses can use musical works administered by SAMRO. This will ensure that creators are rewarded for the public use of their intellectual property.

How to register as a SAMRO member If you compose music of any kind, write lyrics, perform vocals or play instruments in studio and help record music then you are a musical creator which makes you eligible to register. Follow these steps to become a SAMRO member: 1. Download and complete the membership application form. 2. Complete the Notification of Works form that lets us know which works you’re claiming ownership of. 3. Provide us with the Deed of Assignment. 4. Give us a copy of the recording you wish to claim ownership of. 5. Give us proof of identity in the form of a certified copy of your ID document. 6. If your music is owned by a partnership, private company or CC, please supply copies of relevant agreements, founding statements and memoranda or articles of association.

Benefits of membership: Simply put, it makes perfect sense. Having such a powerful copyright institution looking after your interest both with a copyright on your musical works and ensuring you are compensated for the use of your work being used through royalties. SAMRO membership is a sound idea. Not only will royalties from the use of your music be paid directly into your account, you can rest assured that there is a powerful copyright institution looking after your interests as a music creator. Chriss DeVynal DM: Tell us briefly about Chriss DeVynal, where is he

from and how the DJ name came about? A: Back in 2009 when we were starting out, I used to call myself “DJ Chriss” but then we had a project that we called “DeVynal Sounds”, we realized there was a lot of DJ’s who call themselves “DJ Chriss” so it was going to be difficult for people to differentiate me from the others. We decided since we call our project “DeVynal Sounds” why not use the projects name along with my name so it’s easy for people to recognize me, but then “Chriss DeVynal Sounds” for some reason, sounded long and never made sense so we decided 2 exclude the word “Sounds” basically that’s how the name “Chriss DeVynal” came about. DM: When was your falling in love with house music moment and at which point did you decide you wanted to make it a career? A: I started calling myself a producer before I could actually produce. I fell in love with house music in 2002 when I bought “Kabzela -Mekonko Vol3 and Oskido Church Grooves - 2nd Commandment (on Cassette), I think I still have those cassettes. At that time I didn’t know much about computers since I had just arrived in Pretoria from Bushbuckridge - Mpumalanga. In 2005 I got my 1st computer which I bought from our gardener, that’s when I started producing. I always wanted to do Deep House, but for some reason I could not get it right so I ended up giving up. Then I started doing

59

that “Mujava” sound and as time went by I got tired of that sound so I decided to crossover to Afro/Tribal, inspired by Culoe De Song - Webaba (which was in 2009). Later after attending the DJ 101 with Euphonik, I produced a track called “True Afrikan Warriors” (which the celebration mix of the song was a great sell on AFROdesiaMP3), but still had a yearning to do Deep House but couldn’t get that deep sound right, so I started listening to more Deep House. I believe what you listen to inspires what you produce. In 2011 I got that deep sound I always wanted to produce but at less quality though, that’s when I went deep yet again. I’m still yet to get my sound the way I want it to be but I’m getting there, the more time I spend on my production the more I learn. DM: Who is your inspiration for the type of productions you make? A: One of my biggest inspirations is DJ Fresh, he believed in Deep House before people knew house music existed. I started listening to Deep House from his “House Flavor’s” and again the likes of The Layabouts, Frank Roger, Rocco, Christos, Master Vinny Da Vinci, Masters of House, Jerah, Glen Lewis, Mmthis (Tokzen), Malankane, Liquid deep, DJ Kent and Underground deep house producers, the list is endless DM: House music is a vast genre, why specifically did you decide to venture into deep house and not your loud, fast paced more commercial house? A: Firstly it’s what I love, but that’s not the reason I produce it. Deep House is timeless e.g. you can listen to a Deep House track that was produced 7 years back and still match the quality of that track to one that was produced 7 months back. “

60

DM: What would you say d or commercial house? A: For me Deep House is that incorporates many jazz-soul and a bit of funk that takes over your mind something that makes y without you being aware controls the Inner you.

DM: Tell us a bit more ab which label it is released u A: My latest offering is cal which consists of four Deep EarOnDaGround Music W stores like: Traxsource, Be many more. I also have a (Deep Blend Mix)” which f House Festival 2013” Com (Classic Mix)” which you House head set. “Humble also featured on a USA s where it’s still up for previe

Q

DM: Your inspiration for this particular production and the concept behind it? A: The concept behind this is to inspire more people to be into Deep House by doing deep house at high tempo e.g.: 125BPM which is mostly used by commercial producers (Deep House Is Not Played Enough).

DM: In 3 words, house music is...? A: ...Food for Soul DM: Your greatest accomplishment thus far and what would you love to achieve in future? A: My greatest achievements to date is having my own radio slot on House365Radio (Online radio station), establishing my own company DeVynal Sounds House (Pty) Ltd and my music being available on almost all online shops you can think of (Google Me). I believe God has greater things planed for me. What I would Like to achieve is seeing myself working overseas with Deep House producers and again, I wish for a gig overseas, I want to see myself killing a crowd in MIAMI (fans taking pictures and videos screaming for more Deep House from DeVynal himself) lol. DM: What else can we look out for from Chriss DeVynal? A: Expectations are always high, so I’m not going to put pressure on myself, but do expect more releases from me, there’s one we are currently working on with a vocalist, it’s a surprise. In partnership with EarOnDaGround Music World we are working on a compilation for all upcoming producers who don’t have any kind of a deal whether it be, distribution, recording or publishing, they can get in touch for submissions. My show has resumed on radio where people can catch us (House365Radio) every Wednesdays at 22h00 - 23h00 (CAT).

C With no doubt or fear I can truly say that “The Ozone pub” is one of the most phenomenal party scenes in Soweto. Ozone has played host to many SA deep house legends, DJ’s, musicians and all sorts of musical acts across all genres. It is arguably one of the most interesting pubs to spend your weekend because of its unique set up and ambiance. The venue Situated in Moletsane, Soweto in Johannesburg, in an area not many are familiar with, but in spades worth the search. OZ is one of the most exciting clubs with the dance floor situated in the middle of the room and the VIP room behind the dance floor looking through from a glass window, the decor in the VIP room is dark blue with plasmas placed on 2 corners of the small room. 64

L

U

B

Not forgetting the round tables and chairs placed throughout the club for those whose feet can’t dance the night away. The bar is on the left corner of the club with both VIP bar and normal bar separated by the VIP bar room, with an intimate DJ Box for the architects of House and dance music, with people “hlokolozing”, doing the “sushi dance” and partying like you’ve never seen before. The Atmosphere Totally extravagant and ebullient in the main room, certainly, where people clamber atop the speakers and on the stage to “hlokoloza,”hlokoloza”,hlokoza” It’s probably fair to say the real peak time slot is well after midnight, although popping in at the end of a long evening

R E V I E W at say 4am or 5am, once the crowd has thinned out a little and you’re left with a hard core of ravers undaunted to continue to the bitter end, can also be fun. Earlier than that you can expect to be politely jostled and bumped into a fair amount because it’s invariably packed. The Music A number of different promoters take over the club on different nights, but house music and kwaito is what OZ is mainly known for and house music is more than likely what you’ll get if you turn up randomly. They will be hosting DJ Tira on the 8th of March and DJ Sbu on the 30th March. Ozone has kept things riveting by constantly bringing on new artist and DJ’s to the club and it seems like they will continue to up the

bar with their intriguing music line up. The Drink Ozone charges reasonable prices for their drinks with their beer prices on ±R20 and cocktails on R32, but prices differ for different kinds of spirits and bottles, but definitely cheaper than most clubs in terms of pricing for drinks. The Last Word It might not be perfect and you’ll certainly spend a fair amount of time getting in and buying drinks, but for those who are lovers of house and dance music, this place will unquestionably be your home away from home. HELLO

I

f there is anything most people hate is being neutral, whether in their general appearance, careers or love lives, many people don’t want to associate themselves with the word “neutral” even though it might not be a completely bad idea. Let’s take fashion for example, when you don’t exactly feel chirpy or when your age changes, your appearance changes too. Wearing lite neutral tones can bring out the best in your personality and it can help one exude confidence with years of experience behind them and that is called maturity. Neutral colours are extremely classy and a versatile option for your wardrobe. Nude wardrobe pieces can easily be matched with every colour and style that you would like to wear. If you are lacking ideas on how to wear neutral colours and how to make them an integral part of your daily clothing, read on and follow our helpful tips in order to look stunning at every occasion.

The month of love is at an end I fear the neutral stages of life are about to set in for those who are dull at heart, lets be honest only those who are fearless enough and courageous have the capability to strive to break the dull grey areas of life and create beauty. So let us help you make neutral the brighter side of life. For this issue, I will review fashion pieces that compliment any outfit at any given time and show you how to make that awesome winning look happen for your self. Consistency is the name of the game in terms of enhancing your wardrobe and making it superb, shopping for certain fashion pieces is more important than wasting time on an impulsive buy and I want you to feel excited about buying a piece that will work with everything you currently adore in your closet. W

e are going to take a look into a quirky, stylish yet focused young muso who is very talented by the name of Culoe De Song, aka Culolethu Zulu, a DJ and producer from Durban? And at a very young age he is probably the hottest house-music producer in South Africa right now, he is signed to probably the hottest house music label in the country (Soulistic Records), and he’s has his sights on the world of house music. Culoe has collaborated with well esteemed Dj Black Coffee which has seen his career sky rocket to greater limits and I am sure he is happy with his success in the music industry. The workmanship between the two is clearly amazing because they both have one intent and that is to consume the world with their portrayal of what is deep house music . He has produced a number of projects that gained him international recognition and performed alongside international acts such as Rocco, Manoo, Black Coffee, Vinny Da Vinci. This was after his performance as Dj was noted by the likes of Dj Christos, one of South Africa’s pioneers in the dance music scene. From playing locally or gracing the decks overseas with his magic , he always makes sure he steps out looking as fresh as always, a man that never forgets his hat were ever he may go of which I personally think that is his trade mark of sorts. For a person who is well on his way to greatness on the journey to success, he is humble and a very grounded person, We at deep magazine look forward to his next offering and gracing us with great music, and may his sense of style shine on forever. It’s Time to get it. Time is one of the most valuable assets in the universe, it cannot be bought, negotiated or bargained with! If it has past it has past, there is no going back, except waiting for that second chance, hopefully! We talk about essential time pieces, having that will always help you manage time effectively and efficiently. Time pieces come in many different forms and styles and are the only tools we as human beings can utilise to keep track of this amazing asset called time. Whether you’re a collector or just one of those who simply replaces that old time piece when due, you can always appreciate the distinguished craftsmanship of different brands. As we all know these days, the time piece can help describe man’s character and distinguish him by what he wears on his wrist. Wristwatches and antique pocket watches are often appreciated as jewellery or as collectible

78

works of art rather than just as timepieces. This has created several different markets for wristwatches, ranging from very inexpensive but accurate watches (intended for no other purpose than telling the correct time) to extremely expensive watches that serve mainly as personal adornment or as examples of high achievement with impeccable mechanical engineering. Traditionally, men's watches appropriate for informal, business, semi-formal and formal attire are gold, thin, simple and plain, but increasingly, rugged, complicated or sports watches are becoming acceptable for such attire. Some dress watches have a cabochon on the crown and many women's dress watches have faceted gemstones on the face, bezel or bracelet. Some are made entirely of facetted sapphire. Many fashion and department stores offer a variety of less-expensive, trendy, "costume" watches (usually for women), many of which are similar in quality to basic quartz timepieces, but which feature bolder designs. Now that you know more of what the significance of a time piece is, go out there to your nearest retailer and get the time piece that will guide you through the ages and do one thing and one thing onlyto tell you the correct time. 79
