Winter is well and truly upon us and I must say, I for one am battling. The cold and I are not the best of mates, so for that reason we’ve travelled to warmer climes this month and where better than Brazil, to ease the cold, in more ways than one. Not only is weather warmer at this time of year but the mercury was definitely on the rise during the FIFA World cup, what with all those gorgeous Soccer players around in a country of beautiful people. After carefully watching the action on the field, we’ve made our choices and share with you our picks of Soccer Hotties. We also take a closer look at the Land of Beautiful people but we venture away from Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo and instead visit Salvador, Recife and Curitiba, each gorgeous cities in their own right, each offering something different. We spend time with the beautiful Dominique Donner, Project Manager of the Princess Charlene of Monaco foundation and chat more to her about her involvement with the foundation, her friendship with the Princess and her love for all things “water”. She truly is a remarkable person who has achieved so much in her career yet remains humble, approachable and an absolute delight to talk to. It’s that time of year when SA Idols hits our screen again and we catch up with Musa, SA Idols 2013 winner to find out a little more about the man behind the music as well as chat to him about his newly released and highly anticipated album, The Dream.

We also talk to Lelo Boyana, the visionary behind the Love Conference, coming soon to a city near you, about her inspiration for the conference as well as her motivation behind it. Our showcased designers this month are the intrepid duo of McCarthy/ Wolff who are responsible for the stunning couture piece on our cover. They are each fun, creative and energetic individually but as a team , they take their skill to another level. Their Victorian styled corsets are becoming legendary. With the cold well and truly upon us, coffee, and lots of it, is the order of the day. This month we include the funny and witty Ramblings of a Coffee Snob. We will try to include it every month, but as with all snobs of course, we are at the mercy of MummAt Large, as she will let us have her musings as and when she sees fit. We hope you enjoy!! The Classic Trench

SO WHAT DEFINES A TRENCH COAT? Traditionally it is knee length or longer, made mostly of rainproof material and offers protection from the cold. Usually in a thicker fabric, belted with deep pockets, double breasted with large buttons. Of late the classic style has gone through some changes, with lengths varying from knee to thigh and even shorter; belts have been replaced by buttons, and there are an array of colours available. Fabrics now include wool, poplin, cotton to name a few.

WHAT TO WEAR WITH THEM? You can wear virtually anything with trench coats! The look can vary from casual chic to formal. Let’s look at some examples.

with high heeled pumps and a neutral knee length trench, paired with state-

sleeves rolled slightly. With straight or best. If you are short heels are a must. It’s all about balance!

A great casual look is to wear it over a t-shirt or cardigan, paired with chinos and tackies or boots. Throw on a scarf or eve-

A formal look is wearing a trench over a well tailored dress with stockings and heels. This is a very popular look for working woman abroad, especially during winter months. To take the look up a notch, choose a dark colour trench as this is more formal. Make sure that when wearing with a dress, the coat is the same length or slightly longer.

TIPS FOR BUYING A TRENCH COAT : Petites stick to simple styles that are knee length or shorter in a thinner fabric. For those who have a voluptuous top half, avoid double breasted coats with wide lapels and big epaulettes. Make sure that the coat is well lined and that the fabric will hold its shape. Look at a synthetic fabric if you are worried about creasing. For an edgier look leather is great! FIT IS KEY! For the pear or triangle body shape, the trench hides a lot and for the rectangle it well to achieve this. Stick with a neutral colour if you are investing in one, as it will be more versatile.

Happy Trench Shopping! Your friend in fashion Tracey www.saimagekzn.co.za tracey@saimagekzn.co.za

always been , so it came as no surprise that Princess Charlene of Monaco would appoint her good friend as a Trustee and Project Manager Southern Africa to her foundation. The friendship between the Princess and Dominique began way back when the Princess was training for the Olympics and the two shared an apartment. They met through the Princess’s coach and the two instantly clicked. The friendship has remained unchanged over the years and Dominique attended the fairytale wedding of Princess Charlene and Prince Albert in Monaco. Dominique’s love for sport in general and for swimming in particular found her coaching young talent and helping other athletes achieve their goals. Her role in the Foundation expands on this concept which has one goal in mind: THE PREVENTION OF DROWNING.

The foundation would like to see Water Safety included in the curriculum of all schools. Becoming ‘water wise’ includes knowing how to swim but is also so much more than that.

SINCE ITS INCEPTION ALMOST A YEAR AGO, THE FOUNDATION HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN VARIOUS PROJECTS: - During the summer months, a “Learn-toSwim” programme teaching the children of LIV Village how to swim, forming part of their physical education classes.

“The main mission of the Foundation is to prevent drowning. The initiative begins with an introduction to what it means to save a life, an insight into lifeguarding and how just being aware of water safety can save lives. After the introduction, the initiative continues with a general water safety speech about ocean currents, safe bathing at the beach, pool and at dams. Drowning is a terrifying scenario that goes beyond just being water safe. For this reason we take the pupils through the skills of reviving a near drowning patient by performing hands only CPR and vomit drill to prepare them for what could happen. After their training the pupils demonstrate a mock rescue in which they are required to put together all the skills they have been taught” - 8 clinics to the children of Summerhill Home (Etete). The foundation is planning other initiatives including even more schools for the winter months. “The children have shown great excitement and enthusiasm for learning the safety drills and hopefully the initiative has given each and every child a deeper respect for the ocean and better understanding of the hazards that surround swimming pools, dams and rivers.”

The foundation is involved with ‘Water Education’ from grass roots level all the way through to competition and talent development. It recently funded the SA Water Polo team which competed at the Commonwealth Championships held in Aberdeen, Scotland. The Foundation also sponsored the television coverage of the SA Senior Swimming Nationals.

THE AIM OF THE FOUNDATION: To spread these valuable life skills and help create “water safe communities” throughout Southern Africa. The foundation is currently setting up in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. The Princess is extremely passionate about her Foundation and its mission. She wants the world to understand that drowning is a global epidemic that has the greatest impact on accidental death in children. She would also like to facilitate the upgrading of our countries life guarding facilities and would like to encourage and empower the industry to further safeguard our beautiful coastline.

It is recommended that if you wish to participate in an ayahuasca ceremony you need to prepare yourself: - It is suggested that certain foods like blue cheese, cheddar, sardines, red wine and various other aged foods be avoided for between 3-7 days before, as they exacerbate the nausea and vomiting which can follow ingestion. - Other foods like dried fruit, walnuts, avodacos etc, anything that contains the amino acid, tyramine should also be avoided as it could cause a potentially negative reaction. - Your system must be free from any drugs or alcohol, including herbal remedies. - No newspapers or tv for as many days beforehand as you can, this will help to purge your mind of - Practicing meditation is an ideal form of preparation. - No sex before, during or after the ceremony for at least 3 days both ways, to avoid the intense energy shift resulting from orgasm.

Cliff Central

An unheard of concept, the “unradio” show broadcast on television, Cliff Central, is fast becoming highly popular in most homes. Whether its Gareth’s gracious charm or ascerbic tongue one cannot be sure, but the one thing that is certain is that Cliff Central is cutting edge, forward thinking, exciting and most of all entertaining. This month we touch base with Damon Kalvari, assistant to the Executive Producer of the show, Perhaps more respect? Alright, but maybe just a little?

time. That immediate realisation that this is happening.

into the unknown? It was the easiest decision I’ve ever made in my life. The alternative to stay at 5fm was unthinkable. It was really a no-brainer. Gareth Cliff is the best broadcaster in South Africa. I would have been insanely stupid not to have moved with him.

8: If you were to choose a date, what are the requirements? Must show a bit of cleavage. Must have the same socio-political, and religious viewpoints as me. Must be funny. Must eat like a normal person, don’t just order salad. Must have me move in, and live with her within three days from the date. 9: Who, in your opinion, has been the sexiest guest on the show so far? Kat the soft-swinger.

3: What do you hope to achieve through the show? I hope to achieve happiness, and satisfaction, through Gareth and the team being engaging, relevant, and entertaining. I’d also like to be able to send my daughter Alexa to good schools, so she can support me in my old age.

the rest of your day? My day’s work doesn’t really end, until I go to sleep. From about 18H30, I try to feed, bathe, and put Alexa to sleep. In between all of that, I will eat dinner, do marriage stuff with Bernice, and then try and go to sleep by 21H00, or maybe 22H00. 5: What can we expect for the evolution of the show? There will be an increase in callers. LeighAnnwill slowly become happier, less horny, and drink slightly less. Mabale will become more horny, and happier. Gareth will stop swearing, but he will burp more. Intern Siya will become less involved in the show, as he takes up a more management position. 6: How do you choose your attire/wardrobe for the show especially now that its televised?

is comfortable.

The team still enjoys the same banter, the same camaraderie and the same ‘off the wall’ approach to broadcast as they always did, this time without getting into too much trouble. So whether you love him or hate him, Gareth Cliff continues to march to his own drummer , and we respect and admire his ability to take risks in the name of continually “upping the game”

If you haven’t yet caught it, tune in to morning from 6am-8am or alternatively the show is streamed live at CliffCentral.com

At a time when love and romance are threatened by the thrill, the JustCurious #LoveConference steps in “true love” is an unachievable feat. The renowned “Heart Healer” is set to get women and men digging deep into the corners of their heart, in search of the love and romance that now seems like ancient practice. Hill Sr is determined to restore that

We chatted to founder of South African Entertainment Blog, ‘Just Curious’ Lelo Boyana who is responsible for arranging the Love Conference.

WHAT IS YOUR AIM WITH THE LOVE CONFERENCE?

WHAT IS THE LOVE CONFERENCE? The love conference is an event where young people will come together and discuss the issues that affect us when it comes to relationships. What love is, go back to the basics, the origins of it but most importantly talk about the most important love, which is self love. I personally believe that the biggest mistake. I’ve made in my dating life was loving the other person more than I love myself so that’s really the essence of it. Also to encourage people who have been hurt so often that they’ve now given up. It’s not about giving up, the key is to do it right, start by loving you. Because only then will you be able to love.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND THE LOVE CONFERENCE?

HOW DID THE IDEA OF LAUNCHING A LOVE CONFERENCE COME ABOUT? I was just sitting frustrated with my love life and I needed an outlet to talk to other people

CONFERENCE, WHY AUGUST?

I’m worried about not selling the tickets, but I really hope people will come, even if just a few. I feel that we do not get enough opportunities to just sit around the table and talk about what truly affects us so the love conference is an opportunity for us to do that. ARE YOU PLANNING TO HOST THE CONFERENCE ANNUALLY? WHAT IS THE FUTURE FOR THE LOVE CONFERENCE?

JULY 2014 | ENTERTAINMENT | www.deelishlifenstyle.com

WHEN YOU LAUNCHED THE LOVE CONFERENCE, WERE YOU NERVOUS ABOUT PUBLIC REACTION?

31

LOVE CONFERENCE? I’ve never thought about that but “Endless Love” Diana Ross &Lionel Richie comes to mind. WHAT DOES LOVE MEAN TO YOU? I cannot imagine my life without love, I know how happy it makes me when someone does an act of kindness out of love, and how, when I’m in that space I in turn become more loving to everyone and everything around me. If we could all feel that love all the time, the world would be a much better place.

Entry to carnaval is free in Olinda unlike in Rio de Janeiro or Salvador and everybody participates, don’t forget to bring your costume. The most fabulous Carnaval in Brazil is held in Recife. Preparations for carnaval begin in December so if you’re not inclined to the crowds during February then anytime from December will be great as there are always balls and parades

Take in a football game, Recife is big on futebol and the energy that goes with watching a game, complete with the food vendors selling all manner of delicious treats is an experience in itself. The cuisine of Recife features grilled meats especially goat and is often accompanied by an aromatic coconut sauce. The most traditional dish is Carne-de-sol (sun dried beef served with green beans) The cuisine of the area is

Ash Wednesday. Recife is also home to Brazil’s second largest shopping centre, Shopping Centre Recife, so you won’t miss out on any retail therapy. There is also Mercado do Sao Jose, local arts and crafts abound and you’re very likely to pick up some beautiful mementos or gifts here. The Casa da Cultura was once a prison but has since been converted into a mall and is a great place to browse or people watch. And for the sun and sea lovers, the beach of Porto de Galinhas, has repeatedly been awarded the best beach in Brazil.

cultures that have made Recife their home, such as the Dutch and the Portuguese. Recife has over the years become famous for its Carnaval, its beaches and its rich cultural heritage and though we say it is less ‘touristy’ than Sao Paulo or Rio, it is still a very busy city with a vibrancy all its own.

The capital of the state

of Parana and well worth a visit if you’re making your way to Iguacu Falls. Curitiba is a special city, in 2010 it was awarded the Global Sustainable City Award for excellence in sustainable urban development.

ponds and parks, Curitiba is a shining example of how urbanisation and environmental protection live harmoniously, side by side. This co-existence has in itself become a tourist attraction. Curitiba is in Southern Brazil, and the mercury does drop considerably, so you would be well advised to pack a jersey or a jacket, rain is also very likely. The ‘green exchange’ programme of the city focuses on social inclusion, by encouraging low income families who live in towns unreachable by garbage trucks to bring the garbage to the city in exchange for bus tickets and food. LESS LITTER, LESS DISEASE, LESS POLLUTION. School children can exchange recyclable garbage for toys or school supplies. The city even employs the homeless and alcoholics in its recycling plant. The city is a melting pot of different cultures including Italians, Ukrainians and more recently many people of Middle Eastern descent. As with most of Southern Brazil, Curitiba’s inhabitants are mostly of European descent. The city has the country’s second largest population of Japanese and in 1996,

encourages and promotes the preservation of culture. The Guaira Theatre is one of the largest theatres in Latin America and every year in April it hosts the Curitiba Theatre Festival. Curitiba’s many parks host cultural events and festivals that pay tribute to its various ethnic groups. Getting around Curitiba is very easy and the public system is user friendly and far cheaper, even from the airport. Just remember that the tourist bus does not run on a Monday as well as most tourist attractions are closed on the same day. The gorgeous supermodel Isabeli Fontana is from Curitiba as well as a few Formula One drivers such as Enrique Bernoldi and Ricardo Zonta.

Food in Curitiba is as diverse as its many cultures but the Italian ‘barrio’ of Santa Felicidade offers up some true gastronomic delights. Be sure to drink a caipirinha at the many ‘botecos’ in the city and try the barreado, a beef stew slow cooked for over 24 hrs and of course the famous feijoada (beans stewed with beef and pork) who has worked at Nomu in Copenhagen and Alinea in Chicago presides over this kitchen and the

built in steel and covered in transparent ‘plastic’ it is an architectural delight.. You would need vegetation and waterfalls in a now disused quarry. Simply stunning!

Simply put, Brazil is a fascinating country and is so, so much more than ‘Beaches, Babes and Carnaval’. There are vast areas of poverty and the disparity between rich and poor is glaringly obvious but the spirit of the people, their contagious enthusiasm and zest for life and their sheer joy at being alive is captivating, charming and as infectious as anything. The country is huge and one visit will never be enough, I now understand why I have friends who return again and again.

In short, Brazil Rocks!

Ramblings Mumm At Large

of a Coffee Snob!

There’s a song written about it – “A Good Head Is Hard To Find”! Well I don’t know but it sure sounds like it to me. You know the way some people sing, it could be anything? I mean does anyone really know what Lily Allen is saying half the time, is it an avenue or an air balloon???

Well, my point is, it really is that hard

However, don’t feel bad. As I have said I have travelled to distant shores, although in my esteemed opinion I haven’t travelled nearly enough, in my quest for the perfect head. So many places to go, coffees to drink, people to meet and experiences to share……….. but again I drift. As a coffee snob (self professed), I’ve been privileged enough to realise my dream, of sipping a cappuccino in the famed San Marco Piazza and it was more that I have ever imagined it to be. Breakfast looking out on to the piazza, served on a silver tray by a pristinely dressed waiter in white gloves and a white jacket starched to razor-sharp perfection, whilst listening to a string quartet pleasuring my ears with extracts of “Phantom of the Opera”! Exquisite!! Perfection!! I couldn’t have dreamed a more perfect moment, it was idyllic. I almost imagined I was in a Julia Roberts soft-lensed movie.

Come on People of The Republic!!

JULY 2014 | BON VI VANT | www.deelishlifenstyle.com

Then I took a sip of what turned out to be the most expensive cappuccino I ever had and it was……………… bleh!! Yup, I even did at double-take, double-sip to make sure I was paying attention and there it was again. Bland, weak, milky, pathetic and costing R120 (in fact the entire breakfast cost R800.00 but worth every cent for the memory) So it was a huge disappointment but even that heart-stopping disappointment didn’t stop me from enjoying my dream being realised. I did return at a later date and did as the locals do and went to the very back of the restaurant and enjoyed a real “Italiano” for half the price and double the enjoyment!!! And then there was the time that my patience was wearing very thin with the Travelling Partner (more about her later) in an arb shopping centre in when in sheer desperation, I went into a little hole in the wall coffee bar and despite having to drink it while standing, enjoyed one of the greatest cappies I had the pleasure of consuming in quite some time! The cost of this little treasure – a mere R4!!! In all, my adventures in search of the perfect ‘head’ continue. In the meanwhile, I’m loving the Bullet coffee from Vida e Caffe , it has me bouncing off the walls and raring to go. It’s the closest I’m going to get to a Brazil Santos coffee,(well not really) but let’s just pretend.

Cachaca! The National spirit of Brazil

But what is Cachaca? Made exclusively in Brazil and commonly referred to as ‘pinga’ , Cachaca has gained international recognition and the drink once referred to as a “poor man’s drink” , has now been made popular, largely due to the Caipirinha which is known and enjoyed the world over. Made from sugar cane, Cachaca is similar to but in no way the same as rum. The main difference is that rum is usually made from molasses, a by product of boiled cane juice and Cachaca is made from fresh sugar cane juice. However, there are some rums that are made from fresh cane juice as well. There are two types of Cachaca, one white (unaged) and one gold (aged). HOW TO MAKE THE PERFECT CAIPIRINHA: prep time: 3 minutes yield: 1

into a glass 3. Fill the glass with ice cubes 5. Mix and enjoy. Note: stir often to keep the sugar mixed in the drink.

The white variety is cheaper than the gold and it is this version that is usually used in the making of cocktails such as Caipirinha, Batida ( where strawberries or other fruit instead of lime is used) or Rabo-de-galo ( a combination of ‘everything you have in the bar’ and cachaca, usually served as a shot. The dark variety is seen as ‘premium’ , it is aged in wood barrels and is meant to be drunk straight. It is usually aged for up to 3 years but some ‘ultra premium’ varieties can be aged for up to 15 years. Back in 2007 about 1.5 billion litres of Cachaca was produced in Brazil with 99% being consumed locally and only 1% exported, which was mostly used in the making of cocktails, but things have changed since then and Cachaca is easily available so you can bring that taste of Brazil into your home.
