The Haunting of the Ancient City One Skeptics Adventure on Ripley’s Believe It of Not GHOST TOUR By Darren Rosenbaum Let’s start by clearing the air. I’m a cynic by nature. So when

After boarding the Ghost Train, we headed south, past the
Castillo to our first stop across from the St. Francis Barracks, which is when the real fun started. As if on cue, the heavens opened up as we passed the Bridge of Lions. Ralph, our guide for the evening, effortlessly turned this downpour into a good omen, informing us that electrical activity gave us a better opportunity to come in contact with ghosts. Also, the good folks at Ripley’s had thought ahead, providing everyone with a rain poncho.
We headed down the street to St. Francis Park, where
Ralph kicked it into high gear, telling us one intricate ghost story after another. He told us to have our EMF detector at the ready as

didn’t focus on the few dozen visible gravestones. Instead he related how this plot of land had been used for centuries, dating from Timucuan Indian days, which meant thousands had been buried here, layer upon layer, with some never having passed to the other side. Much to the dismay of my pet skeptic, I began taking pictures along with the rest of the group. I wondered; was I hoping for one showing a human form? After taking six night shots from different angles, I took a closer look. To my surprise, one picture, my fourth, clearly showed a strange, opaque vertical light hovering above the columned, white crypt at the back of the small cemetery. I turned to my wife and showed her, along with another woman snapping pictures next to me. No one had an explanation. Even my pet skeptic looked on, mouth agape. Could it be a ghost? My wife said I should show it to Ralph, who had started to lead the group down Cordova St. to the next stop. With proof in hand I fast-walked past the group. As I approached Ralph, I brought my phone back to life to access my picture gallery. Only the fourth picture, along with the two after that, had been erased! Three of the six pictures vanished. How could that be? To delete a single photo requires multiple taps on the screen, each at a different location. Deleting three photos? Nearly impossible! I told my wife what had happened and she just smiled. And, against all odds, my pet skeptic even shrugged, unable to explain the unexplainable.

in St. Augustine was a blast. What other attraction in the area combines knowledgeable guides, fascinating local history and dozens of ghost stories with, of course, eerie nighttime locations? I can hardly think of a more enjoyable way to spend 90 minutes of my life. Even my pet skeptic agrees. ‘Believe it or not’!

AUTISM Part 3 - Life After Treatment by Jennifer Brown
This is a story of one boy and his struggle not to let Autism clam him and of a mother that would do anything to find the key that would set his mind free and open doors they never thought possible. This is Christian’s story - A journey through Autism. This is the last chapter of a 3 part series about a very special boy…a boy whose determination was immeasurable. They call him special because he was diagnosed in 2003 with Autism Spectrum disorder. I call him special because I knew we wouldn’t let Autism claim his life. This is Christian’s story- A journey through Autism-LIFE AFTER TREATMENT. Four years had passed since his episode in our dining room, where his brain was set free and it was without a doubt the best 8 minutes of my life. Christian was my first born and even though I was now a young single mother, Christian was my whole world. If you saw me, you saw him on my hip with the biggest smile of his face, and twinkle in his eye. The first 18 months of his life he hugged, kissed, and cuddled me every second we were together. Never knowing that in 12 short months I would receive the worst news of my life. After 5 hours of observing Christian and 800 questions later (literally), a highly respected Doctor that specializes in Neurodevelopmental disabilities in Gainesville, FL would tell us our fate. AUTISM! He told me that Christian’s autism was very severe and that he would probably never speak, and that he could remain un-potty trained even past the age of 9. As I sat in that chair, I was overwhelmed by all the devastating realties that were being layed out in front of me, but what I was about to hear was enough to light a fire that would burn for a very long time, possibly forever. I was told that due to Christian’s severity along with the size he was expected to be, that he would become too violent for me to handle and that it was almost certain that he would have to leave my home, and live somewhere else by the age of 15. As the years went on, Christian grew in size and his aggression grew as well. When he reached the age of 12, he was 5 foot 8 inches and 190 lbs which made him an inch taller and 60 lbs heavier than me. He was very angry and negative most of the time, especially when he was being forced to participate in activities to which he was not attached. He had moments that he seemed like he might be doing better but then a meltdown occurred. When these meltdowns occurred, it affected each one of us. Days like that stole a shimmer of hope from us all. Christian would become physically violent, and I would have to restrain him and hold him down until it stopped. Jacob would usually be standing in the doorway looking so helpless and scared with tears running down his face. It was starting to happen more and more as he went into puberty. I was beginning to be very unsure of our future. During this time, I was getting back into the work force when I received a

call from a Dr. Randall Haas to come in for an interview. We hit it off and I was his new office manager. Only after a short time of assisting Dr. Haas with Nutrition Response Testing patients using applied kinesiology and nutrition, I was amazed at the results we were getting. In my 15 years of working in the medical field, I have never seen anything like it. These patients turned their back on Allopathic (drug oriented medicine) and were seeing real results using a holistic, natural approach to total health. It was during an exam of a patient we were chelating for toxic heavy metals that a light bulb went off in my head. When I asked Dr. Haas if he thought this approach could help people on the Autism spectrum, I saw that same light bulb in his head light up. From that day on we spent all our free time researching medical abstracts. Autism Research Institute published a study using 27,000 parent ratings of Behavioral effects of biomedical interventions since 1967. The study included drug oriented medicine, along with Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy, Detoxification-Chelation therapy, Methyl B12(sub cut) supplementation, and of course the Gluten-/Casein Free Diet. Our method of Detoxification-Chelation therapy, Methyl B12(sub cut) using Nutritional Response Testing was rated on a 6 point scale as the most effective treatment in regards to better behavior and overall health for children on the autism spectrum. As you can imagine we were ecstatic and very anxious to do Christian’s examination. The first thing we did was a hair analysis for all heavy metals and/or chemicals. We wanted to be able to show the cross reference with lab results versus our testing methods. We then examined him and we did indeed find it. The top five most toxic metals that exasperate Autism: Mercury, Antimony, Aluminum, Titanium, and Lead. He had them all as well as Tin, Copper, Chromium, and Cadmium. Our examination also showed that his Liver, Pituitary, Thyroid, and most importantly, his “Leaky Gut” or Colons all needed major work. We put together a specialized treatment plan based on our findings and got started right away. He began treatment in November of 2013. It was very slow in the beginning, as I knew it would be but after 5 months of bringing him in once a week, BIG changes started to happen. And on March 7, 2014 while Christian was lying on the exam table, Dr. Haas asked him what he asks every patient. “What’s different…good or bad?” I was not at all prepared for what happened next. Christian replied “I feel less Autistic.” I couldn’t believe my ears. All Dr. Haas and I could do is look at one another, and then back at him. We were speechless!! I will never forget that moment for as long as I live. A few short weeks later, Christian’s team at school called me in for our annual IEP meeting where the first topic on the agenda seemed to be the drastic changes they have recently seen in him. I was being told nothing but positive things. He was much more willing to participate and I even believe one teacher said he has been an absolute pleasure in her class. As I sat there listening to this I realized that the changes I was seeing at home was REAL! As my smile grew bigger, they asked me what I was doing different. I simply said, “Biomedical Intervention”. Because we were correcting his body’s root problems, he became more successful in everything he did. Going through the treatment has not only helped him socially, academically, but Christian now eats healthy. He lost a total of 32 lbs. He eats a salad every day. He no longer drinks milk, nor eats anything from a box, bag, or can. His mind seems so sharp and his sense of humor and sociability is remarkable. He will always be ‘Christian’ and probably will always be autistic, and that is just fine with me. But what he has now that he never had before is a real chance at what I know will be an amazing life.

Time on Florida’s Historic Coast
October is a very tasty time in Northeast Florida. The weather begins to cool and the crops are coming in so get out and celebrate food, glorious food! By Barbara Golden The dining choices in St. Johns County are many and of a variety you won’t find in many other areas. If there’s a local restaurant you’ve wanted to try, or an old favorite you just haven’t found the time to get back to, October is the perfect month for dining out on Florida’s Historic Coast. In October, dozens of area restaurants will feature signature dishes using fresh local favorites and heritage-inspired recipes during the month-long prix-fixe dining program known as Flavors of Florida’s Historic Coast. Now in its fifth year, the Flavors dining program was created by the St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra Visitors and Convention Bureau and its restaurant partners to increase awareness of the diverse and unique dining options available not only to visitors, but to locals, too. This year there are nearly 30 restaurants from Ponte Vedra to Crescent Beach, and all-pointsin-between, participating in the program. Each of the Flavors participating restaurants offers a three-course prix-fixe meal that features their chef’s spin on the area’s culinary heritage - Spanish, Minorcan, Greek, British, and Southern just to name a few. The menus are reasonably priced and designed to introduce diners to each chef’s specialty, which in many cases is an interpretation of a classic dish. The featured menus range from $9 to$15 lunches and $20 to $50 for dinners. Most three-course dinners are in the $25 - $30 range. The best part of Flavors isn’t just what you’ll find on your plate, however. It’s the Flavors Top Chef Cook-Off, a benefit for Home Again St. Johns, which takes place on Thursday, October 23 at the Renaissance World Golf Resort. At the cookoff, chefs demonstrate their skills on stage while guests sample dishes from the Flavors 2014 participating restaurants on hand for this tasty event. Tickets to the Flavors Top Chef Cook-Off are $40 per person and include 10 food tasting tickets, 2 beverage tasting tickets, and access to the chef demonstrations. There will be additional tasting tickets available for $2 each at the event. You’ll even have a chance to walk away with a great dining gift certificate or other unique item at the silent auction. Employee Transitions When a small veterinary practice loses a long term employee, the effect is felt on everyone involved in that practice; clients and coworkers. After over four years, in a small practice, when that person has common roots with you due to age, interest in pets and belief in truly serving pets and their owners in a caring manner, losing a quality employee is like cutting off a limb, without anesthesia. Yes, if you noticed, I used one of those words writers are not supposed to use (everyone). Others include words like all, never and always. These are the words that carry a lot of weight. They are words that can be used with power. They are words that can cause pain. In this case, it carries truth and a peak behind the scenes into the professional and personal lives of those who make a practice run. Recently, Palencia Pet Clinic lost one of those valued, long term employees. I will not use her name but she has left us for strong personal reasons. We encouraged her to change her personal life. It needed to be a major change. She had to work out on her own how that would happen. We did not know it would mean her leaving us. She was in a long term relationship that was a threat to her and to her pets. Her former live-in boyfriend had thrown one of her cats when it urinated inappropriately. He had beaten a year old puppy in the face whom she had adopted when the puppy committed some indiscretion. What that indiscretion was does not matter. She was coming to work and leaving the puppy with this monster. He frequently abused her verbally, commonly in the middle of the night, leaving her exhausted during the day for work. It was easy for us to tell when he had ruined her night. She would drag herself through the work day. Why did she stay with this despicable excuse of a human being? She was unable to leave on her own with 5 cats and two dogs. There are few places that she could rent with pets of that number. She was also on the mortgage with this monster. She was trapped. Her answer was to find a new support system in another state. She came to me six weeks before her intended leave date. She explained how it would happen. She even had the support of the monster’s sister. While having her leave is painful, she was kind enough to us to allow us the time needed to hire her replacement. She is missed severely; personally and professionally. But I agree with and support her decision. She had no choice. I understand that many of you will know who this employee is. It is my hope that you will wish her a better life, as I do. It is hard for us to have lost her. Please welcome her replacement the next time we serve your pets.
