ycleBar St. Johns, is a unique fitness concept providing an inclusive and inspiring low-impact/high-intensity indoor cycling experience for all ages and body types. They opened in Bartram Market, located behind Durbin Pavilion in November 2023. Business owner Susanne Krivanek spent years evaluating business concepts looking for one that fostered her passion for fitness, growth, and community. When she discovered CycleBar, an instant spark ignited for this Leadership Consultant and former Adjunct Professor for Rutgers and LaSalle Universities, – “Not only could I grow a business yet support the growth of our community and its members.” says Susanne. For Susanne, there was a personal connection as well. Some of her fondest memories with her father were of their early morning bike rides. However, after he endured a horrific bike accident, as well as Susanne injuring her knee in a boot-camp style workout, she turned to cycling to increase her fitness level while not further damaging her joints. After attending her first CycleBar class, she realized how fun and effective an indoor cycling workout can be. “There is nothing more motivating than cycling to great music, an engaging instructor, and an energized crowd of all different types of people – I became hooked and got so much more out of my workout than what I could ever achieve on my indoor bike at home.”

The Rider Experience at CycleBar is both welcoming and empowering. Upon entering the lobby you are greeted by a Customer Experience Associate (CBX), who sets you up with everything you need for a great workout, including shoe rental and premium water to fill your water bottle. While waiting for the ride to start, you can connect with other members in our Community Room or explore our premium retail boutique with top brands like lululemon and Tavi. When the ride gets ready to begin, our team assists riders to get properly set up on our patented Stages bikes. Then, it’s time to “Rock Your Ride!” Led by our highly skilled instructors, there are six different ride formats to choose from, offering variety in difficulty and style. Some formats, like Foundations and Connect, are for those getting started in indoor cycling or just want to focus on the ride itself. For those looking for more of a challenge, the Performance and Empower rides help take their performance and cardio endurance to a whole new level – great for athletes looking to complement other workouts they do. The Classic format is our standard ride, providing a balanced workout that appeals to all different types of riders. During the workout, there is a body component that uses a weight bar (thus the name CycleBAR). Most rides limit the upper body component to one song yet our new Strength workout includes much more focus on the upper body. For information on the CycleBar experience, visit https://www.cyclebar.com/the-experience. At its core CycleBar St. Johns’ differentiator is its focus on community and helping people achieve greater focus on their goals and priorities. “For example, we have a Purpose Wall where our members can share their priorities with one another, as well as helps them focus on the important things in their lives – it’s a reminder every time they enter the Community Room.

There are many other ways our team helps people to connect with one another and focus on their goals in their workout and life overall.” As a busy professional, single mom, and caregiver of her special needs sister, Susanne realizes how tough it is to fit priorities like fitness into your schedule. “For me, finding time for priorities like socializing and fitness has been difficult. At CycleBar St. Johns, our members can connect with so many different types of people and empower them to do more in less time – not to mention build their network to help them achieve their professional goals as well.” CycleBar offers numerous value-added opportunities for personal and community growth with CycleGives Community Fundraising - rides where participants get a great workout, connect with others, and support their favorite nonprofits. Other special events help enrich the lives of its members, such as free morning stretches and yoga, and wellnessrelated information sessions and vendors. Susanne says she chose to locate her business in St. Johns because of its potential and diverse community. “There are so many great, friendly people from all over the world here; it amazes me at the number of uplifting people here who seek to help others, add value to their community, and connect others to support their success.” Two years from now Susanne envisions CycleBar St. Johns to be an even more robust community that provides even more value to its members. “We have over 200 members and are growing quickly. It’s inspiring to me to see how the word is spreading – the energy and power that our community provides will only get stronger as our membership grows.”

“I am so excited for this opportunity for our team to inspire, support, and elevate others’ fitness level, as well as their overall success and happiness.” -Susanne

FAQ Little Preparation: CycleBar provides the shoes, a towel, and water – all you need to do is show up! Time Maximizer: In addition to a quality workout, you gain access to a great network, as well as some mindfulness time to focus on you and your health. An Awesome Environment and Superior Equipment: With patented Stages bikes, a superior sound system, and an energizing environment – you can feel your energy level rise even before you enter the cycling theater. Highly Skilled Instructors to Coach You: When working out solo, you’re lacking the feedback that helps you optimize your workout and prevent injury. Conversely, skilled cycling instructors motivate you to push past barriers and help correct improper techniques that may lead to pain or injury. Community Benefits that Go Both Ways: There’s nothing like bonding with those who have just endured the same 45-minute roller coaster with you. In the case of CycleBar, there will also be many after-class events to promote fun, learning, and community, as well as involvement with non-profit community causes through CycleGive events.7 www.stjohnsmag.com

NEW YEAR NEW YOU

Avoiding Common Mistakes in Your Fitness Journey DR. CHAKA BRITTAIN DNP, AGPNP-BC

New Year’s resolutions often revolve around fitness and weight loss goals. As a nurse practitioner specializing in lifestyle and obesity medicine, I’ve witnessed many individuals embark on their fitness journeys with enthusiasm, only to stumble along the way. The three most common mistakes I see when setting out to lose weight are: Setting Unrealistic Expectations: While it’s admirable to have aspirations, aiming to shed a substantial amount of weight within a short timeframe often leads to disappointment and frustration. Relying Solely on Willpower: Relying on willpower is a guaranteed recipe for burnout! You need a plan for sustainable weight loss. All or Nothing Mentality (which circles back to setting unrealistic expectations!): Celebrate EVERY win! If you come up short of your goal but weigh less then when you started… CELEBRATE! Now that we’ve explored the common mistakes, let’s dive into some tips to set you on the path to success! 1. Set Realistic and Specific Goals: Break down your weight loss goals into smaller achievable milestones. Example: 1-2 pound loss per week or commit to exercising just 3 times per week instead of killing yourself 6 days a week and then burning out after 1 month.

Health & Wellness Services • weight loss + health coaching for women • lifestyle medicine + primary care • women’s health and hormone replacement therapy • Body Sculpting services with Non-Surgical Lipo Laser and Cavitation/Radio Frequency

Guided help for your weight loss journey

2. Develop Sustainable Habits: Focus on the PROCESS not the PRODUCT! Create a lifelong commitment to your health by focusing on sustainable habits such as incorporating nutritious and balanced meals into your daily routine or making a commitment to meet a specific step goal each day. 3. Give Yourself Grace and Patience: Sustainable weight loss takes time, consistency, and discipline. Yes, it’s important to set goals but you haven’t “failed” if you didn’t hit that goal in the exact timeframe you allotted yourself. Stay consistent and celebrate every pound lost even if it is not exactly aligned with your timeframe and goal. Remember aggressive weight loss is about 1-1.5 lbs per week for most people! 0 7

By avoiding common mistakes, setting realistic goals, and developing sustainable habits, you can embark on your fitness journey with confidence. Remember, it’s not just about the destination but the transformational journey itself. So, fall in love with the process and let this new year be the beginning of a healthier, happier you!

A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

St. Johns County Launches New Comprehensive Plan Public Engagement Efforts in 2024

S A R A H A R N O L D , C H A I R S J C B O A R D O F C O U N T Y C O M M I S S I O N E R S

Sarah Arnold, Chair of the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners, said, "This is a wonderful opportunity for the public to have their voices heard. The Comprehensive Plan Update efforts will continue well into 2024. The County will keep the www.SJCPlanUpdate.com survey open for a long time, plan to set up a series of town halls in each County Commissioner's district, and host public workshops and open houses. This public engagement process will be a comprehensive and collaborative effort with our community." The County also plans to have kiosks set up at many locations throughout the County with paper copies of the survey for the public to complete and submit. The sites will include County libraries and other public facilities. The update process is expected to take approximately 18 months, lasting between August 2023 and February 2025. There are numerous reasons why the County desires to update its Comprehensive Plan. Some of the most prominent reasons include:

A

C O M P R E H E N S I V E

P L A N

St. Johns County has announced its Comprehensive Plan Update public engagement plans. It includes a new online survey at www.SJCPlanUpdate.com that is now available for public input on 10 elements to help guide the plan update. A Comprehensive Plan is a document designed to guide the future actions of a jurisdiction. It presents a vision for a community's future with long-range goals, objectives, and policies. The plan also helps residents identify their vision for the community's future, coordinates local decision making efforts, and provides guidance to landowners and developers. The plan elements include Land Use, Transportation, Housing, Infrastructure, Coastal/Conservation Management, Recreation Open Space, Intergovernmental Coordination, Capital Improvement, Property Rights, and Economic Development.

12

Allowing the community to re-evaluate and revise its vision for future growth Empowering the jurisdiction to plan, rather than react, to new development Providing an opportunity for the community to reexamine its current decision-making practices Analyzing and updating level of service standards for public facilities and services Identifying and addressing existing and projected opportunities facing the community Regularly updating the Plan is required by Florida Statutes. Arnold said, “This a critical time for St. Johns County. The decisions we make with this plan will have impacts on the community for generations. For the quality of life of our kids, and their children as well as for anyone who will call St. Johns County their home, the time is now to be engaged and active in this process.”

FIRST COAST YMCA

LAUNCHING A NEW LIFESTYLE: How the First Coast YMCA

Can Help Your New Year’s Resolution Take Flight By: Amy Brinkley, Healthy Aging Manager, First Coast YMCA

The healthy living journey is rarely a straight and easy one. Life has a way of leading us off course as the holidays, work obligations, family schedules, and a social life all present challenges and opportunities for us to lose our way. In this new year, you may be one of the many looking to get your health journey back off the ground as part of a New Year’s resolution. The First Coast YMCA locations in St. Johns County are here to serve as air traffic controllers, guiding you along your fitness flightplan. If this year marks your first time making a healthy living commitment, congratulations: you’re investing in yourself, and the benefits are endless. It can, however, be daunting to go into a gym and not know where to go or what machine does what. That’s why we offer a unique program to all new members called FastForward Fitness. All new members receive three complimentary consultations where we get to know you, set up a plan, and walk you through the next steps so you’re set up for success every time you come

24

back to the branch. The results speak for themselves: members who attend their FastForward Fitness appointments within two weeks of joining the Y are four to six times more likely to achieve their goals and build healthy habits. As soon as you become a member, sign-up for FastForward Fitness. Maybe you’re in the group of people who are looking to lose weight this year. If so, here’s your next step: the YMCA’s 12-week Weight Loss Program, which gives participants tools, knowledge, and group support to help develop a plan that works best for them. Also, if you currently exercise less than 150 minutes a week, you may be eligible for Exercise is Medicine, which is another 12-week program aimed at helping participants increase their physical activity while educating them on important topics like blood pressure monitoring, body composition, and cardiovascular behavior. Interested participants do need a signed EIM referral form from their physician to sign-up.

If you’re still unsure of joining the Y, consider stopping by the week of January 22nd - that’s when we’re doing Wellness Week. Every quarter throughout the year, we host Wellness Week at YMCA branches throughout the area, including here in St. Johns County. The community can come, check out the facility, signup for a class, use the equipment, and see everything we have to offer for free. There’s no contract required; we want to make it as easy as possible for you to get started on your health journey. Plus, if you want to join but aren’t sure if you can afford it, we’ll work with you on a financial plan that fits your budget and timeline. Yes, the Y has workout equipment and group exercise classes. But we’re so much more than that. We know that healthy living is a holistic process and we’re committed to providing the necessary resources to help you do that. It all starts with a step, one inside the doors at any our facilities. It could be the best decision you make this January in transforming your New Year’s resolution a year-long reality.

Mission: To defend the St. Johns River and advocate for its protection. St. Johns RIVERKEEPER (SJRK) is a privately funded, independent, and trusted voice for the St. Johns River and the public to whom it belongs. We are a 501(c)(3) organization and rely on the support of our members, donors, and volunteers to accomplish our mission - to defend the St. Johns River and advocate for its protection. SJRK was created in 2000 after a group of concerned citizens recognized the health of the St. Johns River was declining, yet government agencies and elected leaders weren’t doing enough to protect it. “We needed a watchdog group to hold government agencies and polluters accountable,” Jimmy Orth, Executive Director for St. Johns RIVERKEEPER said. “As a result, St. Johns RIVERKEEPER was formed to serve as an independent voice and advocate for the protection and restoration of one of our country’s most important waterways - the St. Johns River.” Our vision is to create and maintain a thriving St. Johns River Watershed that sustains healthy ecosystems for future generations. We advocate for all 310 miles of the river, from Indian River County to Duval. SJRK works to uphold its mission through effective advocacy, education, and outreach programs.

26

This year, SJRK launched its SAVe our River’s Grasses Expedition, seeking answers and solutions to the disappearing submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) of the St. Johns River. Over five years, we will continue to survey an 80-mile stretch of the river between Doctors Lake and Lake George - searching for remaining grass beds, conducting water quality testing, and seeking urgently needed solutions to restore this vital habitat. Our advocacy team also regularly investigates pollution problems and demands accountability from polluters, ensures that our environmental laws and regulations are implemented and enforced, and works with citizens to effectively resolve problems impacting the river in their neighborhoods and communities. Citizens can reach out to our team by emailing report@sjrk.org. Our education team develops high-quality educational resources and programs for K-12 students and provides frequent opportunities for students and the general public to experience the river through boat trips and field trips. Our outreach team informs, involves, and engages our members and the community in efforts to protect and restore the river’s health, provide opportunities for the public to Get Your Feet Wet and explore our watershed, and regularly plans cleanups to help restore our riverfront parks and keep trash out of our waterways.

A Message From The Vet by Dr. Deckard, DVM, Pets R Family

INFECTIOUS COUGHING IN DOGS Kennel cough in dogs is a highly contagious respiratory disease complex that affects many dogs every year. It has become much more common in recent years due to the increase in numbers of pets, increase in travel with pets and exposing our dogs to others in dog parks, day cares, in neighborhoods, etc. This respiratory infection causes inflammation in the trachea and bronchi which results in a cough and may at times also causes watery eyes, runny nose, and sneezing. There are many different causes for kennel cough, which is why it is hard to prevent. You may have heard recently in the news that veterinarians are reporting an increased number of dogs presenting with acute respiratory infections ranging from mild and self-limiting to lifethreatening pneumonia. The disease is reportedly nonresponsive to commonly prescribed antibiotics, and diagnostic testing is often negative for known canine pathogens. Kennel cough can be caused by many infectious agents such as Bordetella, mycoplasma, parainfluenza, adenovirus type 2, influenza, distemper, coronavirus, herpesvirus and many others. Some of these are bacteria and the others are viruses. Although many of our dogs are vaccinated for many of these, they can still show symptoms of disease. The vaccines are effective at reducing the clinical signs and many times prevent the progression to pneumonia. In these cases, you may only see some mild sneezing

and coughing, and the dog recovers without treatment. Puppies and dogs with immune compromise and unvaccinated dogs are at the highest risk for becoming sick from kennel cough. The way that the infectious agents are spread is through respiratory secretions. These can be transmitted through the air from sneezing or coughing, by direct contact between dogs or from secretions left on objects in the environment. The important thing to remember is that dogs that have had kennel cough can be shedding infectious agents for several weeks after symptoms have resolved. This is why it is such a contagious problem. The incubation period after contact with the infection is typically around 7-10 days. The diagnosis is usually made based on the clinical signs and history of recent exposure to other dogs. These signs include: • Highly contagious cough, rapidly spreading among dogs in contact with other dogs • Acute cough, sneezing, nasal discharge, eye discharge, fever, anorexia, lethargy • Severe form can progress to lifethreatening pneumonia requiring oxygen and ventilator support

It is important to take all signs of coughing in your dog seriously, especially if your pet has risk exposure. In some cases, your veterinarian may want to do blood tests, bacterial cultures, or viral PCR tests to make the diagnosis. Dogs that have recently come from a shelter situation are obviously at higher risk than other dogs. Other risk factors include dogs that are boarded, groomed, or involved in day care or frequent dog parks. Testing is important to be done within 4 days of clinical signs if possible, because many of the pathogens cannot be detected after that. Treatment depends on the severity of infection. Many dogs only require some minor supportive care or might include antihistamines, cough suppressants and antibiotics. Dogs that are severely affected may require prolonged medication or even hospitalization for more aggressive treatment. Prevention is through limiting exposure by keeping your dog away from any dogs that are not up to date of vaccination, avoiding any dogs showing respiratory signs, avoiding kennels, and grooming facilities that do not require proof of vaccines and quarantining any recently acquired dog. The other way to limit illness is to keep your dog up to date on vaccines. Your veterinarian can discuss your dog’s risk factors to decide which vaccines are recommended for ultimate protection.
