One of Eric’s concerns for the back-to-school season was gathering supplies for all of his children, who range in age from 6 to 16 years old.

With a large military community based in Northeast Florida, the First Coast Y is proud to support its members who served or are serving in the armed forces and their families. To learn more about the programs available for active duty or retired military and their families, visit your local First Coast YMCA location.

The Military Back to School Bash is a great example of how First Coast YMCA locations are more than just gyms; they provide safe spaces for interactions with the greater St. Johns community. All local residents are encouraged to explore services and programs that offer support in hard times.

By Eleanor Blair, Military FirstCo-Leader,OutreachCoastYMCA

The Hernandez family is active in the Y’s life-skills educational groups including home economics, athletics and volunteering. These social groups have led to valuable friendships, which Eric’s children could've missed out on after moving or being homeschooled.

As an Air Force veteran and father of six, Eric Hernandez knows how important a strong support system is for military families. Eric served 20 years in the military and his service took him across the world. Since settling in Jacksonville in 2020, Eric and his family have found a heartfelt community in the staff and programs of the First Coast YMCA.

Operation Salute Military Appreciation Back to School Bash. The annual event offers military families the opportunity to receive much-needed school supplies - such as pencils, notebooks and backpacks - for free. More than 800 backpacks loaded with school supplies were distributed to YMCA members and local military families across six First Coast YMCA locations.

Eric also says one of his family’s concerns when moving to North Florida was making friends in the community.

“Military families move around a lot, so forming long-lasting relationships in their communities can be challenging.

Especially for my children, it’s great to know there’s a place in the community where we are welcomed with open arms and can meet individuals with similar experiences,” Eric said.

Eric’s favorite part of the annual Military Appreciation Back to School Bash event is now connecting with other YMCA members of similar backgrounds and experiences. They exchange stories of their time in the service, create new relationships and seek out opportunities to be involved in the “Mycommunity.children are homeschooled, so we visit the YMCA to socialize and learn things that textbooks and school curricula don’t teach,” said Eric, who now personal trains all ages as a wellness associate at the YMCA. “Whether you’re preparing to join the military, an established member of the armed forces or a retired veteran searching for a community, the Y has a place for you,” said Hernandez.

“It’s incredibly gracious for the First Coast YMCA to provide these school supplies,” Eric said. “They can often be expensive and require stressful searching. This is one less thing I have to worry about while I focus on getting my family ready for the school year.”

This sense of community was evident recently at the YMCA

Boston's North End

MY WANDERING FORK by Lori Allen

The North End or otherwise known as Little Italy has come to our little slice of the world on County Road 210! Being from Boston and a frequent visitor of the North End as well as NYC, I have been known to search out the best Italian joints around town. I am so excited now to have two great choices right here in our own backyard!

Poppys Italiano is a family owned nononsense Italian comfort food restaurant with a full bar and a drive thru for easy pickup. A favorite is their pasta combo sure to fill your Italian cravings! It is a combination of creamy cheese and meat lasagna wrapped in pasta layers, cannelloni stuffed with ricotta and spinach for a different take, seasoned meat stuffed ravioli and baked rigatoni all covered in their rich homemade marinara sauce smothered with a blanket of Mozzarella then baked in the oven. This dish comes out piping hot with all of its ooey, gooey deliciousness. There are tons of dishes to choose from that celebrate all of the Italian classics and more! I love that they have early bird specials from 3pm to 5:30pm Monday thru Saturday and from 12pm to 5:30pm on Sunday. These specials come with soup or salad and even a glass of wine or beer if you choose. What a deal! At Poppy's, you're there to eat, drink , relax and enjoy authentic Italian Cuisine that will leave your belly full and your heart wanting to come back for more!

vinaigrette glaze. Its so fresh and light yet fulfilling. Their garlic shrimp that are just soaking in this garlicky white wine sauce are so good that you will want extra bread to sop up the extra goodness. One of the best happy hours around with their 1/2 off appetizers along with their drink specials, 4$ drafts, 5$ wines, 6$ wells served Mon-Fri 2pm-6pm/SatSun 3pm-5pm. At Al Dente you will enjoy great authentic Northern Italian dishes along with a fun atmosphere and warm friendly faces enticing you to always come back again.

Did you purchase an electric vehicle (also referred to as “clean”) vehicle this year or are thinking of buying one? You may be eligible for a tax credit; however, the amount of the credit will depend on several factors, including when you made the purchase. The recent passing of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 changed the rules regarding the tax credits and were made effective August 16, 2022.

The best course of action is to check with your tax professional to see if you will qualify. You can also utilize the following websites for information: Check if vehicle meets tax credit requirements: https://afdc. reduction-actenergy.gov/laws/inflation-

The battery component requirement states that a percentage of components be manufactured or assembled in North America. For 2022-2023, the threshold is 50%. Threshold amounts increase annually starting in 2024 and reach 100% after 2028.

Beginning in 2024, taxpayers can elect to transfer the credit to the dealership if dealership meets certain requirements. This can reduce the purchase price of the Startingvehicle in 2023, battery components manufactured by a foreign country of concern will not qualify for the credit. If you entered into a written binding contract before August 16th, you need to follow the old rules. This also includes if you did not take possession of the vehicle until after August 16th (the determination is the contract date).

YOUR MONEY

The old rules specified that the credit was only available for the first 200,000 vehicles manufactured. You can check to see if the vehicle is still eligible at https://afdc.energy.gov/ laws/inflation-reduction-act

Threshold amounts increase annually starting in 2024 and reach 80% after 2026.

The 200,000-manufacture limit no longer applies; rather the requirements are based on a critical minerals and battery component assembly rules ($3,750 credit per requirement, up to $7,500 max Thecredit).critical minerals requirement states that a percentage of critical minerals extracted or processed must be in a county that has a free trade agreement with the US or were recycled in the US. For 20222023, threshold is 40%.

Starting 2024, critical minerals sourced from a foreign country of concern will not qualify for the credit. These countries are China, Russia, North Korea & Iran

The amount of the credit is $4,000 for the base credit and then an additional $4,000 may be available if the vehicle meets the fuel economy requirement, for a total of up to If$8,000.youentered into a written contract AFTER August 16th, the new tax credit rules apply.

Other important notes: No tax credit for modified adjusted gross income exceeding $300k for married taxpayers, $225k for head of household and 150k for other filers No tax credit for vehicles with MSRP exceeding $80k for vans, SUVs or pickup trucks. Only one credit per year

2. Dental Philosophy – Drs Lewis and Barlow communicate frequently about their patients. It is important to them that they remain on the same page regarding the standard of care their patients receive. Both doctors prefer a preventive approach to dentistry. It saddens them when a patient calls in pain. If they can tell a problem is about to arise, they like to take care of it while it is still a small problem. Patients are grateful too! They would rather deal with a smaller issue, that is less invasive, and costs less.

Which Doctor is Right for You?

2. Dental Services – While both doctors perform almost all the same procedures, they do have their prefer ences. Dr Lewis loves working with patients that have airway or sleeping issues. He also loves placing im plants and restoring confidence back to someone that has been without a tooth. Dr Barlow has become a master at the Solea Laser. This allows him to do treatment without anesthetic! That means no needles! He is so fulfilled when he can provide relief to some one that has been delaying treatment out of fear.

At Bartram Dental, we are fortunate enough to have 2 amazing doctors, Dr Jason Lewis, and Dr Royce Barlow. They have remarkably similar stories, but they do have some differences. Let’s see which doctor would be the best fit for you.

1. Family – No, they are not related. Although they do get asked if they are brothers… a lot! But family is first and foremost to these guys. They are both married with children, and even have pets. They both married their high school sweethearts… that both became teachers… in St Johns Co! Dr Lewis’s wife, Traci, is a former math teacher of Bartram Trail High School, and Dr Barlow’s wife, Jamie, is a former first grade teacher of Ketterlinus Ele mentary School. Both wives currently work in the dental office to help with the daily flow of the practice.

3 Ways They Are Unique

3. Compassion – Both doctors know that going to the dentist can be scary. They do their best to make every patient overcome that anxiety and get the care they deserve to feel confident and healthy. They actually make per sonal phone calls to welcome patients to the practice, or to check up on them after a procedure. When is the last time you had a doctor do that?

1. Globetrotter vs Hometown Hero – Dr Lewis was born in California, but grew up in Cincinnati, OH. He then went to dental school at Oklahoma University. After graduation, he moved to South Carolina where he practiced dentistry for 2 years as an Associ ate dentist. He then moved here, to Saint Johns County, and started up his own dental practice in 2005, and he has been here ever since. Dr Barlow is the original St. Johns County man. He attended Pedro Menendez High School and earned his Bachelor’s from UCF. He then got his Master’s Degree from Barry University, and went on to graduate from LECOM School of Dental Medicine. He then partnered with Dr Lewis back in St Johns County where it all began.

3. Oklahoma vs Georgia – Lastly, when it comes to college football, these two will never agree. These men definitely wear different shades of Beingred. new to an area can be over whelming. Hopefully, you were able to relate to one or both of these fine doctors so that selecting a new dental office is easy. We hope to meet you soon! by Traci, Team Leader at Bartram Dental

Based on our initial assessment, a plan is made for treatment and testing. All doctors and available technicians come together to help the pet in need until

• Swelling of the face • Snake bite/insect sting If you suspect that he/she is choking, you should carefully attempt to clear the airway. If your pet is bleeding, then apply pressure to the wound with a clean cloth until you can get emergency care. If your pet is involved in a traumatic event, be extremely cautious during your approach, because an animal in pain could bite without warning. Be careful when moving your pet and consider using something as a stretcher to prevent too much movement if you suspect something could be broken. If your pet is having a seizure, you will want to move anything that is close by that could cause an injury. If the seizure lasts longer than a minute, you should plan to take your pet to a veterinary hospital to get emergency medication to stop the seizures. If your pet has ingested something toxic, it is important to seek emergency attention as soon as possible in case vomiting could be induced to expel the toxin.

• Pale gums • Rapid breathing • Weak or rapid pulse • Difficulty standing • Paralysis • Toxic ingestion • Protractile vomiting/ diarrhea • Loss of consciousness • Seizures

Emergency Care

• Excessive bleeding

As soon as you can, call your veterinarian or closest ER to inform them of the situation and find out if they can see you. At that time, give them as much information as possible and ask if you should do anything in the meantime. If your pet ingested something, please bring the item or package with you to help the staff identify what was ingested. At our hospital, when we get notification of an emergency coming in, it is all hands-on deck. Our center hospital technician readies all the important equipment: ECG, pulse oximeter, thermometer, oxygen, crash box, IV catheter, gurney, and fluids. When the pet arrives, one technician brings the pet back to treatment for triage and another technician gets a brief history from the owner.

A Message From The Vet by Dr. Deckard, DVM, Pets R Family

When you say the word emergency, we all picture something pretty extreme such as major trauma, difficulty breathing, allergic reaction or other life-threatening concern. Emergencies can definitely be categorized into different levels, but most of them involve needing immediate attention to some degree. It’s important to first be able to identify what constitutes an emergency, and then determine if you can do anything immediately to help your pet prior to seeking professional help. The first step is recognizing the emergency. Here are some common signs for a pet in trouble:
