Hot Spot Power Yoga

St. Johns Meet the Owner, Caia McInerney

Yoga teaches us to be kinder to ourselves, that we don’t have to be perfect, and how to approach difficult situations. Photos by Nature’s Child Photography

Opening Date? Our Grand Opening weekend is August 29-30, 2020. Regular schedule classes kick off Monday, August 31 at 6am.

Yoga teaches us to be kinder to ourselves, that we don’t have to be perfect, and how to approach difficult situations.

What kind of classes will be offered?

What makes your yoga studio unique?

All 4 Hot Spot Power Yoga studios are Baptiste Affiliate studios, which means that we provide classes in the style of Baptiste Yoga, a rigorous vinyasa, or flow, practice made popular by Baron Baptiste. The majority of our classes take place in a room heated to 90 degrees, though we will also offer some restorative, less intense but still very beneficial classes, which will not be in a heated room.

What is hot yoga? How is it different from regular yoga?

Heat, or tapas, is one of the 5 pillars of Baptiste yoga - the other 4 being breath (ujjayi), gaze (drishti), core stabilization (uddiyana bandha), and flow (vinyasa). The purpose of heat in Baptiste yoga is to facilitate warming up the body both from the inside and out, allowing for greater flexibility and a deeper practice. Heat brings an additional level of rigor to our yoga practice, loosens the muscles more quickly, and works together with breathwork to bring focus, clarity, and ultimately, physical and mental transformation. By learning and practicing these skills on our mats, we are better equipped to go out into the world and put them to use in our everyday lives.

What are some of the physical and mental benefits of yoga?

Yoga is a beautiful and varied practice, and its benefits are vast. Physically, practitioners gain strength, flexibility, and stamina, bringing their heart rates up, toning the muscles, and strengthening the core. Mentally, yoga helps to reduce stress and anxiety, providing a time and space for individuals to breathe, move, and meditate. We often talk of taking our yoga off of our mats and out into the world. We learn so much about ourselves through our yoga practice, in terms of reactivity, expectation, and self worth.

6

Without a doubt, Hot Spot Power Yoga stands out because we are a COMMUNITY. We are a safe space where everyone is welcome and no one is judged. You can come as you are and know you will be accepted, whether you’ve practiced yoga for 25 years or it’s your first class, whether you’re wearing high-end yoga apparel or just picked up some leggings at the bargain basement. That doesn’t matter. We’re just happy you’ve joined us, and we want to support one another. We are all connected, and we embrace that connectivity, celebrating one another’s achievements, and holding each other up in times of difficulty. Often times, people come in to the studio to practice yoga, and they leave feeling part of something bigger than themselves.

Why did you decide to start the business? Also, why St. Johns?

I discovered Hot Spot Power Yoga when I was looking for a studio to practice in after my daughter was born 3 years ago. I needed time to myself to breathe, to move, and to de-stress from mommy duty. I showed up looking for a hot, sweaty workout, and I found so much more. Over time, my schedule changed such that I wasn’t able to get to classes at the existing HSPY studios, and I nearly cancelled my membership, as I just couldn’t make the commute anymore. While I am well aware that there are far greater decisions in life, I really struggled with this one. Ultimately, I was in yoga class and had the realization that if there wasn’t a studio close to where I lived, I should make it happen! I credit yoga for showing me this possibility, and empowering me to go for it! I took the next step and contacted Leah Hansen, the founder of Hot Spot Power Yoga, and I asked her to partner with me on this adventure. From day 1, she has been a steadfast support to me and to opening this 4th studio location in St. Johns, for which I will be eternally grateful. We both see great things ahead.

How has yoga transformed your life?

I have practiced yoga for over 15 years. After the birth of my son 8 years ago, yoga helped me through a difficult bout of postpartum depression (in addition to the care of my physician). At that time, I would go to yoga class for that hour of stillness to clear my mind, but after class, I would return to life as normal, not yet aware of how to carry yoga into my everyday life. When I began practicing at Hot Spot, I continued to show up for that hour of peace, but little by little, the lessons I learned on my mat started to translate into my way of thinking, communicating, and being. Just like when I would confront a pose in my practice that challenged me, I learned to respond instead of react to difficult situations in my life, and take the process one step at a time. Similar to when I would fall out of a pose on my mat, I gained the perspective that if and when I don’t meet up to certain expectations in life, I can always try again, and value the effort. And in the same way that I return to my breath when I feel winded or defeated in class, I can come back to my breath when life inevitably overwhelms me. These practices and skills have changed my life for the better, and I want to share them with anyone and everyone.

...the lessons I learned on my mat started to translate into my way of thinking, communicating, and being. Caia McInerney

What did you do before owning your own business? I am a licensed and certified Physician Assistant. I have a Master’s Degree in Health Sciences from George Washington University, and I worked for 6 years in Boston, MA and Washington, DC as a Neurosurgical Physician Assistant, specializing in the treatment of the brain and spine. When my son was born, I chose to stay home to care for him, and I have, without regret, been a stay-athome mom ever since. I always planned to go back to work eventually, and now that my son is 8 and my daughter is 3, I’m starting to spread my wings again, though in a different direction, as this opportunity to open a yoga studio presented itself to me at just the right time.

When you have time off, what is your favorite thing to do with your family in St. Johns?

When I have time off, I like to practice yoga! Besides that, though, we love spending time with family at the beach, and feel blessed to have both my parents and my brother and his family nearby (he and his wife own and run Ridgewater Show Stables, an equestrian training center in St. Augustine). We love to travel to visit my husband’s family in Connecticut, where we get our taste of fall, winter, and lots of cousins, and we cherish our annual family ski vacations to Colorado. Beyond that, I’m a huge fan of trips to the spa, relaxing with friends, and a good brunch.

Meet family physician Dr. Fuentes Juan Fuentes, MD, is a family medicine physician at Baptist Primary Care’s new location in St. Johns off of County Road 210 near the South Hampton neighborhood. Dr. Fuentes treats patients of all ages, from toddlers age 4 and up to seniors. He is particularly interested in lifestyle medicine, which encourages patients to take control of their health through regular exercise, a healthy diet, stress management and adding healthy habits into their daily routines. Dr. Fuentes is excited to practice in the rapidly growing area of St. Johns. His areas of expertise include: • • • •

Preventive care Well child visits Depression Heart disease

• • • •

Chronic conditions Diabetes Geriatric care Asthma

What made you want to become a primary care physician?

What do you like about living in St. Johns County?

When I was six years old, I saw the importance of preventive care after witnessing someone die from an illness that could have been avoided. I strongly believe that if we educate and encourage children to create healthy habits, we decrease the likelihood of developing a chronic condition down the road. Treating the entire family is very important to me, and I feel honored to treat them and kick-start their healthy habits, no matter their age.

I’ve been practicing in Florida for almost 10 years, and I love this area. I love how it’s growing, especially with young, active families who I can help establish strong and healthy lifestyles. There is so much to do here – I love being outdoors and active, whether that’s spending time at the beach or biking with my family, and I encourage my patients to do the same.

What is your patient care philosophy?

I’m currently working on earning my black belt in martial arts and my children have joined me as well. I love that it teaches discipline while still being active and having fun. We also enjoy cooking, biking, playing music and traveling together. It’s important to me that every person who walks through my door feels comfortable, so recently I’ve been learning new languages. I am fluent in Spanish, understand both Portuguese and Italian, and I’m currently learning sign language.

I approach all of my patients with the “I CARE” values of integrity, compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence. I pride myself on my excellent listening skills and want my patients to feel respected and heard every time they see me. I truly believe that the best doctors are those who prevent disease, not treat them, and that’s why I encourage lifestyle changes and keeping up with annual visits.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Dr. Fuentes is accepting new patients age 4 and up. To make an appointment, call

Real Talk with Heather & Danielle

5

tips we provide our Sellers

This Really Happens in Real Estate! by Realtors Heather Strazinsky & Danielle Rodriguez

With all things 2020 we felt it was time for a good laugh…..

Sellers have so many things going through their mind so why not have some fun while explaining what we recommend! In some situations selling your home can be extremely stressful and there is a lot to think about.

1

Turn on all lights for showings.

Although we love a good game of hide and seek and finding light switches provides us with a great amount of mental puzzle solving stimulation, it’s still a better idea to have those lights on.

2 Go ahead and fix or replace those hard to use or broken doorknobs.

We love a good brainteaser but sometimes leaving agents instruction such as, turn the front door knob to the left while holding it up and insert the key while pulling right then unlock all while balancing on your right foot, can be a bit daunting. But seriously, who doesn’t love a good game!

3 Always notify us if you have an alarm or turn it off.

We do appreciate the opportunity to meet our local law enforcement and we love to practice our sprinting skills while looking for an alarm that is hidden in a bedroom closet with no code mentioned. It’s a much better deal than those

10

expensive escape rooms. With that said – we still suggest you let us know if there is an alarm. Unless, of course, you didn’t even know you had an alarm either (Yes, this has happened! What a surprise. Especially to the homeowners…).

4

Clean up the dog/pet waste in your yard. Frogger or Slip and Slide were both childhood favorites of ours, but calling your local Doo-Doo cleaner would be a better option when selling your home. Let’s just say we’d rather people feel fresh when they leave your property.

5 Make sure to maintain your yard.

Walking into an overgrown front or back yard can be a world full of wonder for us. All types of fabulous things can be found such as snakes, frogs and lizards – who doesn’t love animals. The mystery of it all! It also gives us a great reason to pull out our galoshes or get a pedicure. But you may want to keep the grass cut even though it will take away our fun. Not everyone is as adventurous as us!

Home Decor

Design Elements to Look for In New Construction by Kelly Wissinger Changing Spaces Jax

S

t John’s is still one of the fastest growing counties with an estimated 3.7% growth rate this year (worldpopulation.com). New construction in SilverLeaf, Rivertown, Beachwalk, Creekside and Shearwater alone are adding a potential 20,000 new homes (StAugustine.com). A couple of times a year I like to visit the model homes in the area to see what is on the horizon. On my latest visit I spoke with several sales associates to get some insight on their builders. Builders are now offering more ‘standard’ features to beat the competition. Gourmet kitchens with wall ovens, granite countertops, and 42 inch cabinets are the most common standard features now offered by builders. Other builders are including tall entry doors, security systems, wi-fi thermostats, upgraded insulation, and tankless water heaters. One builder is even adding a free pool! While on my visit to the model homes, of course I have to take note of any new design features - that’s the fun part!

Kitchens are still the ‘hub’ of the home and are very spacious with extra large islands. Multi-purpose rooms are still popular, giving families flexibility to make an office, children’s hangout areas, or a guest room when needed. Outdoor living is expanding with multiple seating areas. Incorporating mixed elements on exteriors for aesthetic purposes including stacked stone, board & batten, siding, brick, and metal roofs. Accent walls are still going strong, with moulding, board & batten, accent paint colors, and yes, shiplap - contrary to what some designers say of the feature having had it’s day - it is still popular in Jacksonville! I too, have had a couple of clients request it. Ceilings are becoming more of a feature with beams, reclaimed wood, and shiplap. Bathrooms are more spa-like with big walk-in showers and free-standing soaker tubs.

Bold tile is becoming popular, especially in smaller areas like laundry rooms and powder rooms, which would be a good place to test your adventurous side. In other research I came across a new floor plan known as multigenerational living, or next-gen. Think of it as an attached guest suite. It consists of a bedroom, bathroom, living area, and kitchenette, with a separate entrance; some with a separate garage. This is a great idea for those with aging parents who may need a little assistance and who can occasionally help with child care, therefore keeping costs down for all. Families with children coming home from college but wanting more independence could also benefit from this floor plan, as well as disabled children also wanting to be self-sufficient but close enough for needed assistance. Some of the builders in this area offer these unique floor plans. If you are building a new home, do lots of research and remember to stick to what works for you and your family, and include touring some model homes; it’s a great place for inspiration. Be sure to ask the builder for that free pool!

Dr. Glenos and Dr. Hadgis working on virtual appointments during the mandatory closure in April 2020

COVID-19 Response to Staying Safe

at Smiles by Glenos & Hadgis Orthodontists by Dr. Craig Hadgis, Dr. Jimmy Glenos and Team, Smiles by Glenos & Hadgis Orthdontists

W

hen the governor of Florida decided to mandate closure of all nonessential dental procedures (except emergencies) during Coronavirus, this could have had a significant negative effect on the progress of hundreds of patients undergoing active orthodontic treatment. Dr. Craig Hadgis and Dr. Jimmy Glenos, both board certified orthodontists with two offices located in the St. Johns and St. Augustine areas, had many decisions to make. The primary goal at Smiles by Glenos & Hadgis Orthodontists was to first make sure that patients would not experience harm or discomfort during the closure. Therefore, they decided to keep all team members employed to handle

orthodontic emergencies throughout the closure. Before the Coronavirus outbreak Dr. Hadgis and Dr. Glenos implemented a means of offering virtual appointments through HIPAA compliant texting of images and messaging. This allowed their office to quickly address any concerns that might require an appointment to keep all the patients on schedule with regard to completion of their treatment plans. In addition to all CDC recommendations, touch-free hand washing stations were installed just outside the entrances to both offices in St. Johns and St. Augustine. Also installed at both offices were automated touch-free doors with cameras and intercom to allow con-

firmation of safety questions prior to allowing entry. Safe temperatures are verified immediately upon entry and access is limited to only those with appointments. Masks are required and sneeze guards have been placed around the front reception areas. As a result, Dr. Hadgis, Dr. Glenos and their team are proud to have been able to continue orthodontic treatment and witness the benefits of the orthodontic care given, regardless of this pandemic. Smiles by Glenos & Hadgis Orthodontists look forward to the day when all of these beautiful new smiles can be enjoyed even more... without face coverings.

The Perfect Bite - September 2020

Safe & Delicious Dining during Covid-19

Take Out? Al Fresco? Where are your favorite Spots? Who has the best take out? Isn't that the question of the year? With

Covid-19 and social distancing Take Out business is booming and rising. But who does it better? I know for myself there is nothing worse than the anticipation of arriving home with a meal you have been dreaming about all day only to end up with a flavorless, lackluster soggy mess. During this time my experiences have varied so I'll talk about the good ones. St. Mary's seafood offered up a family meal of 50 fried shrimp along with 4 sides for $25. We found that the shrimp were crispy and plentiful. They had the ingenious idea of putting tin foil in the Styrofoam container that not only kept the shrimp warm but crispy as well. Usually the Styrofoam steams up inside when fried hot food is placed in it. Then you get the condensation which causes the fried food to become soggy. Using tin foil decreases the condensation and so you arrive home with nice crispy fried foods. The sides are all placed in individual containers and you have some great choices such as creamy coleslaw, rice pilaf and I personally love their fried squash it’s a bit more but worth it! So what have you seen as far as take out fried foods? Are there any restaurants that follow this simple but great concept??

TAKE OUT

I think Italian places like Benito’s, Maggiano's and Vito’s just to name a few are pros at getting the take out meal right. Yes the containers are not microwavable but I

26

by Lori Allen, Local Foodie

think that it is so worth it! The food keeps warm longer in those tins and you can easily heat them up in the oven. To me heating the food up this way makes it taste as if you were sitting in the actual restaurant but instead you are sitting in the comfort of your home. So it’s a win win situation. Maggiano's even goes as far as putting the reheating directions right on the top of the containers. Brilliant! I recently ordered Hurricanes on County Rd 210 Taco Tuesday to go. I was pleasantly surprised that they had taken the time to separate my tacos and put the sauces on the side so that when I got home I was able to reheat and add the sauce on top. I had the Baja fish taco, and banging shrimp taco. Both had just the right amount of heat along with a cool creamy sauce and the tortilla was soft and not soggy. At a discounted price you can’t go wrong. Great job! Have you had any take out and were pleasantly surprised?

AL FRESCO

So how about outdoor dining or as us foodies like to call it Alfresco! Isn’t the key to dining outdoors is to provide us with a safe environment as well as delicious food?? I have been searching and researching and have found a multitude of places that advertise that they are taking precautions, here just a few.

Aunt Kate Al Fresco

Bartram Walk is a great place to head to for outdoor dining because you have several options and you know we all like options. Iggy’s Grill and Bar (104 Bartram Oaks Walk #101, Fruit Cove, FL 32259) I found that the servers all wear masks and use disposable utensils and cups. Their fried shrimp is always great and they have a really nice grilled Sea Bass that is worth a try as well. Their drink specials are cold and refreshing! Moon Dog Pie House-(116 Bartram Oaks Walk, Fruit Cove, FL 32259) has a great covered outdoor area and for me one of the best slices in town. The slices are huge, crispy on the bottom, cheesy on top and the dough is so good you actually WANT to eat the crust. These are the foldable kinds of slices, come on New Yorkers you know what I'm talking about! I also love that you can get one plain slice and one loaded down with all your favorite toppings and it won't break the bank. We recently visited there and they let us take our beers outside on the walkway while we waited for our outdoor table. Talk about hospitality, we will be back!

Local Food Blog

The

Caps Al Fresci Vito’s Italian Restaurant (116 Bartram Oaks Walk #101, Jacksonville, FL 32259) now has outdoor tables as well. I can't help but get their garlic aioli pasta every time I go! So garlicky and light it's one of the best in town. Add a glass of their Chianti and you have an I-talian meal to die for. On an upscale note I noticed that Black fin also has dining alfresco that is a few doors down. So the area is just filled with choices! Many waterfront restaurants have adapted Covid-19 ways of sterilizing, social distancing and mask wearing. So why not stop on by? Caps on the water (4325 Myrtle St, St. Augustine, FL 32084) does an excellent job of keeping us safe. You are required to wear a mask upon entering as well as be temperature screened and their staff has been trained on the covid-19 sterilization process. The restaurant boasts of fresh local seafood cooked with both southern and Mediterranean flavors. I for one love their oysters and their fish dishes which are creative and so darn fresh you would swore the fish came right from their dock! King Fish Grill (252 Yacht Club Dr, St. Augustine, FL 32084) follows the same rules and is located just under the Vilano

Bridge so the views are amazing. Their sushi and shrimp and grits dishes are stuff with flavor. And with the chef being from New England you know their clam/seafood chowdah is Top-notch.

I have heard some good things about Culinary Outfitters located by the St. Augustine shipyards. The friends that have visited have raved about the crispy deviled eggs, seafood truffle pasta, smoked wings and lobster roll. I am looking forward to trying them out soon as they too follow the Covid-19 rules and have dining alfresco! Al fresco (outdoors) is the word‌So Go! Tell me where is wonderful?

The Legal Expert Michael L. Duncan, Esq. Duncan Trial & Mediation

NON-COMPETE AGREEMENTS:

ARE THEY WORTH THE PAPER THEY ARE WRITTEN ON?

I

am frequently asked to help businesses and individuals with noncompete agreements. Non-competes and other “restrictive covenant” agreements are contracts in which one party – typically an employee or former owner – agrees to not compete with a business or refrain from certain other conduct. From the business’s perspective, restrictive covenant agreements are a means to try to protect against employees, contractors, and former owners from using their knowledge of the business to later engage in direct competition. For employees and former business owners, restrictive covenants can serve as an impediment to future employment and business opportunities. Types of Restrictive Covenants: Restrictive covenants take five primary forms: 1. Non-Compete Agreements - prohibit one side from competing activities. 2. Non-Solicitation Agreements - prohibit one side from marketing and selling to certain customers. 3. Non-Piracy Agreements - prohibit one side from soliciting the other’s employees or vendors. 4. Non-Disclosure Agreements - prohibit one side from disclosing or using the other’s confidential business information. 5. Combination Agreements - contain two or more of those listed above. Are They Really Enforceable? In Florida, generally speaking, the answer is “yes”. Florida Statutes Section 542.335 expressly permits non-compete agreements provided they are reasonable in duration, area, and line of business. Under current Florida law, restrictive covenants can be enforced if the following are established: The agreement is in writing and signed by the employee, contractor or former business owner. The covenant protects a legitimate business interest such as trade secrets, referral sources, confidential information, customer relationships, goodwill, or specialized training. The restriction period is for a reasonable time. Under Florida law, what is considered a reasonable time varies depending upon

against whom a company is attempting to enforce the restrictive covenant. The restriction is geographically reasonable. A company may only apply a restrictive covenant in a geographic area where it has actually done business or legitimately planned to. A company only doing business in St. Johns County may face significant challenges trying to enforce a restriction prohibiting competition throughout all of Florida or the United States. The restriction is reasonably related to the company’s type of business. How this applies will vary depending upon the business involved. For example, if a company sells only billing software and nothing else to plumbers, then a legitimate restriction may be for plumber billing software; however, a restriction for “all software” or “all plumbing-related supplies and services” might not be enforced by a Florida court. As with most legal matters, non-competes and other restrictive covenants can be complex and how they are best addressed will depend upon the facts and circumstances particular to each situation. What To Do: No matter whether your position, if you are in a situation concerning the preparation, signing or enforcement of a non-compete agreement or other restrictive covenant, make certain to consult with an attorney for advice, counsel and assistance. This article is general in nature and is not intended to provide and does not provide legal advice. This article does not create an attorneyclient relationship. BEHIND THE FLUFF: The Importance of Regular

A Message From The Vet by Dr. Deckard, DVM, Pets R Family

Grooming for Doodles There’s no question that “Doodles,” are all the rage now. A doodle is any breed mixed with a poodle, which is bred to basically look like a fluffy teddy bear. Who wouldn’t want that? Labradoodles, goldendoodles, bernerdoodles, newfiedoodles, and minidoodles, are some of the most common dogs that we see in our practice today. They are wonderful family dogs with great dispositions and are generally very healthy overall. As a veterinarian, the one thing I try to stress with clients who purchase these dogs is how important it is to have them regularly and professionally groomed. Behind all their “fluff”, they are an extremely high-maintenance breed that requires daily brushing, touch ups every few weeks, and full grooms every 4-6 weeks – just like the fancy and beautiful standard poodles we see at the dog shows. Why? Because most doodles have extremely thick, curly coats that mat very easily. Matted fur doesn’t have to look like dreadlocks; many owners are usually surprised when groomers and vets tell them their dog has a matted coat, because it doesn’t look like they imagine. A curlycoated dog can be smooth on top of its fur, and matted to the skin underneath. Daily brushing is the best way to prevent mats, and that can be quite an undertaking, especially if you have a large doodle that just wants to play!! Your groomer can teach you how to brush them properly at home, and

what tools to have on hand to do so! Matting can create severe skin problems underneath the fur and be very painful for your dog. When the hair is matted to the skin, the skin cannot “breathe.” Any moisture your dog is exposed to will become trapped under the mat, causing the skin to become very fragile, and the bacteria and yeast that naturally live on your dog’s skin will overpopulate and cause infection. In many cases the infection under the coat is severe because it simply wasn’t seen by the owner. What that means is when the groomer tries to brush, comb, or shave skin that is infected and fragile, the risk of the skin getting injured becomes very high, and often after grooming, dogs who were matted are usually very itchy in the areas where the mats were and can scratch and cause injury to themselves. Bathing and swimming are the most common causes of mats, and in a doodle, you have a water-loving breed! Professional bathing is most recommended, because there your dog can be fully dried and brushed out before matting occurs. Allowing their coat to air dry can not only mat the coat but trap the water that starts the vicious cycle of skin infections. Many doodle owners want to keep their dogs on the fluffier-side to maintain their teddy-bear look and doing this can really be a difficult task for a groomer if the coat and skin are not in great shape. If

there are mats, even small ones, it can take hours and hours for a groomer to brush them all out which is often a very painful process for the dog. Most often, if a groomer is faced with grooming a matted doodle, he or she will recommend a shave down. This is necessary for the health of the skin and to give the coat a fresh start so that a maintenance schedule can be set up and the desired “fluffiness,” can eventually be achieved. The biggest take away is this: trust your Groomer and your Veterinarian. Listen to his/her recommendations. Follow a maintenance schedule and book your appointments ahead to keep maintenance schedule consistent and timely. Start your doodle young getting used to being bathed, brushed, and touched (around 8 weeks). And if you have a picture in your phone of the perfect doodle haircut, share it with your Groomer, and be patient; often it will take a few sessions and a lot of hard work to get your pet to that look. These tips will not only help your pets health, but they will help the Groomer and the doodle owner as well!
