SAINT JOHNS NATIVE Living her Dream! Dr. Kathleen Deckard at Pets R Family!

I

t’s often the vision of any young, aspiring professional to go after a dream, achieve it and then practice it in your home town, with the people you love the most. So often in life we may find that isn’t the path we obtain. And for all the right reason’s end up in another place focused on life details that became our existing priorities at that time. However, in this case, the dream was achieved. Dr. Kathleen Deckard DVM, has been a resident of Saint Johns County for over 45 years. She moved here as a young girl, in the area of Fruit Cove, near Julington Creek. Access to Fruit Cove was a two-lane road across the Julington Creek Bridge, where pavement left the suburban area of Mandarin and entered the country. Race Track Rd was still just two lanes as well back then, and our County Road 210 corridor, was only a road down to the Greenbriar area, which was then still dirt. The Community of Cimarrone was the only neighborhood on County Rd 210 during those early years in the 1990’s, and the local Truck Stops at I-95 were the only place to pick up supplies unless you drove into town. Dr. Deckard had a dream to become a Veterinarian. It was a dream she had enjoyed for many years, and after graduating from the University of North Florida in Biology, she headed off to the University of Florida to finish her degree in Veterinary Medicine. Upon completion in 1999, she knew her absolute desire was to come home to Saint Johns County, the place she had grown and loved for so many years. You see her dream was to bring her knowledge of animal medicine to the people she loved the most.

6

She always longed to serve her community in a way that impacted peoples lives. And her love for animals allowed her to reach her community with love, care and compassion for the beautiful fur babies that were their pets. She began in Saint Augustine, FL, as an Associate DVM for a large practice in town. In her 16 years there she prioritized the three most important things for her life; honing her animal medicine skills, caring for people around her, and having children as she started her family with her husband. These key ingredients make up the distinct character that is the heart of this amazing care giver, and they still define her today. Dr. Deckard had one piece of her dream left to attain in 2015. Her hearts desire had always been to have her own Veterinary practice, in her own community, and to live nearby so that her three lifes priorities could be practiced daily. Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital was opened to the public on June 1 in that year, and her dream was made complete.

www.petsrfamilyvet.com

Pets R Family is a full-scale pet care facility, with a focus on high quality medicine and exceptional client care and service. Per Dr. Deckard’s design, PRF is a five Doctor practice, with over 55 employees. Their 11,000 square foot facility has state of the art surgical suites, and a recently remodeled Hospital Treatment area that can accommodate and care for many pets of all types and sizes. Dr. Deckard designed her hospital to be a place of comfort and care. And the design and flow in function are specifically created to best provide that for their clients. Dr. Deckard shared her thoughts on her dream with us, and encapsulated it this way. “I always knew that achieving my degree in Veterinary Medicine and returning to my home to practice it to the best of my ability for the people I know and love, was my life’s dream. And to be able to achieve that in my own family owned and operated company, where my children and husband work alongside me, is beyond what I ever could have truly imagined. My hope as we continue to grow in serving our community in pet and client care, is that we never lose sight of the key tenets in our foundation of approaching each person and pet with love, care and compassion. And if we achieve that each day, then we are truly, living my life’s dream.” Dr. Deckard also shared that her daughter, Abigail Deckard, is also on track to follow in her mothers’ footsteps and become a Veterinarian, one day working alongside her.

I always knew that achieving my degree in Veterinary Medicine and returning to my home to practice it to the best of my ability for the people I know and love, was my life’s dream.

Not often in life are we able to achieve all the things we wished we could do. And quite often, life finds a way to steer us in other directions and into other places than we expected. However, this local, hometown lady, has found a way to stay on course, achieve her life goals and bring them home so that we all can benefit from her talents in pet care and in the human care.

Beach Reads: Escape to Nantucket

by Debbie Gaylord

Elin Hilderbrand is one of my favorite authors to read in the Summer. In anticipation of her new novel, The Hotel Nantucket (which we will review next month), here are a few of her other books from the past that are still great reads (btw, she has written 28 novels). Hilderbrand is known as the quintessential queen of the beach read, although she has written two winter series. Most of Hilderbrand’s books are based on the idyllic island of Nantucket, that northern summer paradise off the coast of Massachusetts. She spins a lovely story with many twists and turns, and highly memorable characters. The stories are light even when there is a mystery, which is just the attitude a beach read needs. If you are looking for a perfect escape, we highly recommend anything by Elin Hilderbrand.

THE PERFECT COUPLE

BY ELIN HILDERBRAND

It's wedding season on Nantucket. The beautiful island is overrun with summer people - an annual source of aggravation for year-round residents. And that's not the only tension brewing offshore. When one lavish wedding ends in disaster before it can even begin - with the bride-to-be discovered dead in Nantucket Harbor just hours before the ceremony - everyone in the wedding party is suddenly a suspect. As Chief of Police Ed Kapenash digs into the best man, the maid of honor, the groom's famous mystery novelist mother, and even a member of his own family, the chief discovers that every wedding is a minefield - and no couple is perfect.

SUMMERLAND

(publsiher's summary). Our View: This was a great mystery that kept me guessing throughout the story. The characters were complicated and well-developed. As usual, Hilderbrand tackles big personal issues but does so in a light way. The stunning descriptions of Nantucket combined with descriptions of food and drinks added to the enjoyment of this book.

BY ELIN HILDERBRAND

A warm June evening, a local tradition: The students of Nantucket High have gathered for a bonfire on the beach. But what begins as a graduation night celebration ends in tragedy after a horrible car crash leaves the driver of the car, Penny Alistair, dead and her twin brother in a coma. The other passengers - Penny's boyfriend Jake and her friend Demeter - are physically unhurt, but the emotional damage is overwhelming, and questions linger about what happened before Penny took the wheel. As summer unfolds, startling truths are revealed about the survivors and their parents - secrets kept, promises

broken, hearts betrayed. Elin Hilderbrand explores the power of community, family, and honesty, and proves that even from the ashes of sorrow, new love can still take flight. (publisher's summary) Our View: The story captured my attention from the beginning with the car crash. When I was a teenager I was in a terrible accident and this novel was so realistic in exploring the aftermath that I could not put it down. Each character grappled with their own demons and figured it out in the end.. As one reader said, "The ending of the story was very realistic, as in life, it always turns out... just not exactly as our expectations". www.stjohnsmag.com

Travel

Travel to a quiet space

by Eric Wolf Impeccable Jouneys www.ijt.guru

V

acation travel has always been a favorite way to leave the day-today and find a new way to live. Overrated staycations do not help with the decompression of daily pressures. While websites, apps, blogs, and social media add to the joy of travel they increase the confusion about the suitable space for you. Now more than ever people are returning to Travel Agents to get things right. They care about saving money for you as well. While under deposit a good Travel Agent constantly reprices and grabs better discounts for you. The Travel Agents dedicated web portals to find the best prices and inventory beyond the consumer website. Plus they personally do what is best for you, unlike a website and its cookies. An experienced Travel Agent rarely has fees and is accessible 24/7 via their app or phone. They make sure all the details of your ultimate holiday is a dream come true. Ocean cruises are great for all ages, families, couples, or solo travelers. The diversity of Ocean vessels has Surfing, Zip Lines, Laser Tag, and true Broadway shows. A Travel Agent is keen to point out River Cruising might be boring for the under 50 crowds with only a lounge,

10

pool, and one dining room. It would be excellent for a couple to walk right out or us a complimentary bike off into a city center square. Rivers hold 150 and Luxury Ocean at 600 guests they focus on the local culture and residents, Large Ocean liners lean toward adventure thrills. No Kids Cruise Lines is a thing and very popular. The timeframe to reserve varies on the space you need to reduce stress. Adult-only cruises reserve about 10-6 months out. All-inclusive resorts are at capacity due to school and holiday breaks. River Cruises are small longboats, so 11-18 month advance

deposits are common to get a large window vs a slit of one. Alaska is 10-15 months for the prime side of the ship to see the most glaciers and land animals. We compare Non-Published Air prices with Cabin rates over a span of weeks to find the best combination for the best view and fares. Non-published Air for European holidays book 11-4 months and you get refundable deposits. Any time is a good time to see what a Travel Agent can do for you.

YMCA

5 Water Safety Tips for Parents to Prioritize this Summer & Year-Round by Delraye Norris, Regional Sports and Aquatics Director YMCA of Florida’s First Coast

A

s families across the Sunshine State prepare for warmer weather and time spent in and around water, it’s crucial for parents to remind one another to prioritize and practice water safety before having fun. When parents and caregivers take the time to equip children with essential water safety skills, they are protecting and gearing them up for a safe and enjoyable experience every time. As one of the top cities with the most beachfront in Florida, the YMCA of Florida’s First Coast reminds adults and children to prioritize safety around water. Here are some tips to keep loved ones safe around in and around water this summer and year-round:

1. Always ensure there is supervision

A lifeguard should always be on duty when swimming or participating in aquatic activities. Lifeguards not only watch the individuals in the pool, lake or ocean, they also watch water conditions and are responsible for advising swimmers on any safety concerns that might arise. A tip from our lifeguard, Ryan:

“IF YOU’RE NOT A CONFIDENT SWIMMER, ALWAYS SWIM IN FRONT OF A LIFEGUARD.” In addition to lifeguards, a parent, caregiver or guardian should always be alert and within arm’s reach of a young child at all times. While parents should also be able to relax, they can take turns supervising so everyone can have a chance to have an enjoyable experience!

2. Wear a life vest

In the time that it takes for an individual to swim, children and adults alike, they should wear a life vest while in or around the water. Full-body vests, covering the chest and both arms, are important to maintaining an easily floating position. Water wings, individual flotation devices on both arms but not the chest, have a risk of not being airy enough to comfortably hold someone in an upright position. A tip from our lifeguard, Luke:

“DON’T RUN, WALK!” Slipping on the pool’s edge can lead to serious injury, and being close to water could potentially end in drowning, even for strong swimmers. No matter the circumstances, even if there are supervisors, an untrained swimmer should always be protected by a floatation device around the water.

3. Enter the water feet first

For children still developing swimming skills, make sure they are avoiding water that is deeper than they can comfortably walk in and that they understand the proper way to enter and exit the pool.

4. Use the “Reach, Throw, Don’t Go” technique

If a child sees a friend or someone nearby struggling to keep afloat, it’s likely their first instinct is to jump in to help them. It’s important to know that doing this could lead to both

people drowning. The Y’s Safety Around Water program recommends the “Reach, Throw, Don’t Go” technique, which involves using a long object to pull a struggling swimmer to safety. Using this technique ensures their friend gets the help they need without putting themselves at risk.

5. Teach them early

The earlier parents educate their children about the importance of water safety, the better they can understand and be aware of the dangers anytime they are near water without proper supervision. A tip from our lifeguard, Isabelle:

“LISTEN TO THE GUARDS, THEY ARE THERE TO KEEP YOU SAFE.” Teach children to start getting comfortable in and around water and encourage them to practice swimming. Who knows, maybe they can be a future lifeguard and save the lives of many one day! A great way to learn life-saving water safety skills is to earn a lifeguard certification. At the YMCA, anyone older than 16 can apply for a paid lifeguard position. Applicants must pass an ability-based exam and will be taught several essential first aid procedures. Lifeguards at the Y are working every day to make pools a safe place for children and adults to be physically active and enjoy the beautiful Florida weather. Dental Health

June is National Smile Month! By Dr Jason Lewis, DDS, FAGD BARTRAM DENTAL CENTER (BARTRAMDENTAL.COM)

S

ummer is here!! This is when the people of Florida really shine. It’s time for backyard bar-be-ques, family vacations, and lazy days at the beach. Just thinking about the upcoming weeks puts a huge smile on my face. Perhaps that is why June became known as National Smile Month?! Here are three great ways to celebrate this happy time.

TAKE CARE OF ORAL ISSUES If you or a family member have some oral care concerns that you have been putting off, it’s time to make it a priority. A healthy mouth leads to a healthy body, which in turn, leads to a happy, vital life. No one wants to be on vacation and have a tooth break. Can you imagine being on a cruise ship with a toothache? What a bummer! Time with our families is so precious. When you finally have all the plans made, the time off work, and you are all together… an emergency trip to the dentist is not on the itinerary. Have your dental treatment taken care of on your terms when it is convenient for you. Even if you think your mouth is healthy and in good shape, a visit to the dentist before you leave for vacation is always a

20

good idea. Your dentist can be proactive and help you avoid those dreadful emergencies. Because of COVID, so many of us got off track with our oral care in the last 2 years. If you are one of those people, there are likely issues in your mouth that you are unaware of that require attention. It’s time. Time to make that dental appointment. Go ahead… I’ll wait while you make your appointment.

SHOW IT OFF! Once you have a healthy mouth… show it off! Smile big for those photos with friends and family. You are creating your story. Make it a bright and happy one. Perhaps you just want a little brighter smile. Most dental practices offer a variety of whitening options. It could be something as simple as prescription strength whitening strips, or you could go ‘Hollywood White’ with a deeper whitening treatment. Or… who knows… maybe a summer romance is in your future?? A smile can make or break a first impression. Most people would agree that the quality of their smile has an impact on their love life. Celebrate this month with a refresh. Wait. What is that I see on the next page? Is Bartram Dental celebrating National Smile Month with a

whitening special? What a coincidence. Ha!

SPREAD THE WORD Post photos of your beautiful smile online and encourage others to do the same. The world has gone a bit looney lately. We all need to be reminded to be thankful for the blessings and people in our lives. A nice, warm, friendly smile could make all the difference to someone. Be the rainbow in someone’s cloudy, rainy day.

Food

Looking for a delicious summer meal bursting with flavors, nourishing vitamins and aromas that will remind of a hot summer night. This ratatouille recipe inspired by Keri will surely be a hit.

aubergine ratatouille simply delicious Summer fare

Ingredients 1 eggplant 2 zuchini 2 squash 1 bell pepper 1 yellow onions crushed tomatoes rosemary arregano basil olive oil garlic

Dont forget a glass of cabernet sauvignon for the chef

The PROCESS ♦ Slice all veggies thinly (use a julienna cutter if you have one). *With the eggplant sprinkle lightly with salt and let sit for about 10 minutes until it sweats - then rinse it off and pat dry. ♦ Create a sauce or use marinara: Heat the olive oil in a 12-inch (30-cm) oven-safe pan over medium-high heat. Sauté the onion, garlic, and bell peppers until soft, about 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, then add the crushed tomatoes. Stir until the ingredients are fully incorporated. Remove from heat, then add the basil. Stir once more, then smooth the surface of the sauce with a spatula. ♦ Arrange the sliced veggies in alternating patterns on top of the sauce from the outer edge to the middle of the pan. Season with salt and pepper. ♦ Cover the pan with foil and bake at 375 for 40 minutes. Uncover, then bake for another 20 minutes, until the vegetables are softened. Serve as a main dish wtih some crusty french bread or as a side.

A Message From The Vet by Dr. Deckard, DVM, Pets R Family

Insect Stings in dogs

D

ogs are naturally curious animals and love to check out anything that moves. In Florida, this happens quite often with the multitude of creatures that our pets encounter. This curiosity can prove to result in a situation that is either a benign interaction with a lizard or frog or a more challenging situation that can include swelling, bleeding or worse case scenario, a severe anaphylactic reaction. In this case, Scarlet, who is just the cutest 1 year old inquisitive little dachshund, was asking to be let out at 6 am. Upon her

return, it was immediately apparent that she had a problem with fairly dramatic facial swelling. The owner had recently used bleach in an area that the dog had access to so they were not sure if that was a factor. She was acting fairly normal. Not knowing if this was an emergency reaction or something that could be treated as an outpatient, the owner did the right thing and brought her into Pets R Family to let a doctor perform a complete examination. Upon examination, Scarlet was stable but had substantial facial swelling. Her muzzle was measured, and her temperature was taken and was found to be normal. A thorough oral and physical exam was performed and no signs of bleeding or foreign material were found on her lips or in her mouth. It was determined that Scarlet most likely was having an allergic reaction to an insect sting. This could be due to a bee or wasp sting, a deer fly, mosquito or scorpion as the most likely insects known to cause this in Florida. Alternatively, a snake bite would cause puncture wounds, which would result in bleeding and a lot of pain

which was not apparent in this case. Scarlet was immediately treated with an injection of diphenhydramine, also known as Benadryl. She was monitored for the day and sent home with oral Benadryl dosing. Shortly after she got home, she had some vomiting which may have been caused by either stress or ongoing allergic reaction signs. We had her return to the hospital for a steroid injection to help manage the symptoms. The following day, Scarlet was doing a lot better and 48 hours later, she was completely back to normal. Insect stings can be frightening for most pet owners, but if given the proper immediate treatment, they have a good prognosis for complete recovery. It’s important to know the signs to watch for, how to tell the difference between an insect sting and a snake bite, and to know when to seek medical attention. The decision to consult with your Veterinarian is key to quick and effective treatment that will give your pet the relief and care it needs.
