The New

Bartram Dental Center 55 JAIDEV ROAD ST. JOHNS, FLORIDA 32259

Drs. Jason Lewis & Royce Barlow, along with their wives Traci & Jamie lead the team at their new office in northern St. Johns

T

his month is the grand opening of Bartram Dental Center just east of I-95 on CR210. The new facility offers a state-of-the-art, full-service dental office with expanded services including implant therapy, adult orthodontics and sleep treatment. Bartram Dental is also home to its very own dental assisting school. The doctors, Dr. Jason Lewis, DDS, FAGD, and Dr. Royce Barlow, DMD, live and work in St. Johns along with their families.

Having been in business since 2005, Bartram Dental Center is all about positivity, compassion, teamwork, and family with the goal of providing patients with the best possible outcome. We had the opportunity to meet the dentists and their team, and tour this beautiful new dental practice right in the heart of northern St. Johns. When you step through the door of the new offices, you feel the relaxing comfort of a beautiful home and a welcome feeling pervades in every detail of the decor and energy of the staff.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ST. JOHNS? Dr. Lewis: We love the family-friendly spirit that thrives here in northern St Johns County. We see it daily with our patient family and our own family’s life. We are raising our twin sons Carson & Connor here and appreciate the world-class public schools, opportunities for youth sports, and the friendliness of our neighborhoods. We know that we are blessed with an amazing quality of life here. We also did a lot of research before we moved to Jacksonville, and determined that St Johns County had the best school system. Traci was a high school math teacher, so it was important for both of us for her to have a great school district to work in.

WHAT IS YOUR PRACTICE’S MISSION? Dr. Lewis: We made an investment years ago in becoming a “Complete Health” dental practice. There are only a select few Complete Health dentists in the U.S. It involves training, resource commitments etc. For our patients it means we are focused on helping them maintain their very best “complete health” -- not just ideal “dental” health. Patients see our Complete Health mission when we ask about their sleeping habits, diet challenges, new

6

medications, other health issues. We believe the mouth is the gateway to your overall health. We can help people with issues way beyond having a beautiful and fully-functioning smile. Our mission statement is ‘We create healthy, happy people, one smile at a time’.

WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU IN PROVIDING DENTAL CARE? Dr. Lewis: We want our patients to relax and have a pleasant dental experience knowing that we will be compassionate while we expertly address their issues. We are fully aware that patients experience “dental anxiety” and we work to make sure that is minimized. We make sure you know what to expect and we are focused on minimizing any discomfort. Many patients also benefit from various forms of sedation dentistry. Ultimately, we know that patients need to have a pleasant experience if they are going to continue to be a member of our patient family. Overall, the most important aspects to me in providing dental care are the patient experience, as well as the team experience. If you have a happy team, patients can sense this, and it makes them feel more comfortable in our office.

WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR PATIENTS TO KNOW?

Dr. Lewis: We want our current and "future" patients to know that we are committed to providing state-of-the-art dental services from our brand new facility just east of I-95 at CR-210. Our modern new office is designed with the patient experience in mind. We want you to be relaxed and confident that our dentists are going to successfully treat you. We want our patients to know that Bartram Dental is locally-owned -- our dentists live here and intend to be leading Bartram Dental for years to come. Any member of our team of dental health professionals at Bartram Dental could work anywhere, but they choose to be a part of our very special Practice. Customer service is a lost art in the medical profession, and it is our passion to bring it back.

HOW DO YOU WORK TOGETHER AS A TEAM TO HELP PATIENTS?

Dr. Lewis: Recently, we had a patient referred to us by another patient, who has very severe dental anxiety. We listened to her concerns, and presented clinical and financial options to help with her anxiety about dental treatment. We offered this patient conscious sedation, which is a form of sedation that involves taking a couple of pills. When I followed up with the patient after treatment, she was ‘blown away’ about how wonderful her experience was (she had an extraction and 2 dental implants placed) and she was looking forward to coming to her future dental appointments. She loved our customer service and overall work environment. We also communicated with her medical doctors to keep them informed of her treatment and how this procedure could impact other areas of her health. This type of experience is one example of many that fuels our passion as an office to provide exceptional care to our patients.

HOW DO YOU KEEP UP WITH CURRENT DENTAL TECHNOLOGY AND EDUCATION?

Dr. Lewis: Our dentists and other dental health professionals are routinely enrolled in training classes and coursework to make certain we are providing our patients with the latest advances in Dentistry. It's part of who we are at Bartram Dental to fully embrace modern technology especially when it reduces patient discomfort and dramatically improves patient outcomes. We also make sure we are up to date for our assisting school. We are very proud of the men and women that have graduated our Florida Department of Education approved program. We are honored that they have chosen us as a resource to better their lives and the lives of their future patients.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BEST NEW TREATMENTS PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT?

Dr. Lewis: Our newest laser technology allows us to treat cavities and other minor procedures without anesthesia. We also have 3D X-ray technology that gives us information about the patient’s airway. Speaking of airway, our laser technology will also eliminate snoring by treating

the palate area. This can be done without anesthesia as well. That is life changing!

WHAT ARE SOME SPECIAL FEATURES YOU OFFER PATIENTS AT YOUR OFFICE TO MAKE THEIR EXPERIENCE ENJOYABLE?

Dr. Lewis: Starbucks only wishes their coffee was as good as what we offer (haha). In the mornings, we make freshly baked Otis Spunkmeyer cookies to give to our patients as they leave (there’s no job security there!). During treatment, the patient has the option to watch one of their favorite shows on Netflix, Disney+ or Hulu. We also offer warm, scented towels as a finishing touch to your visit with us. Lastly, we have a beverage bar that includes coffee, water, and Gatorade. You may just want to sit next to a fireplace and drink a nice cup of coffee or tea in one of our cozy sofas and relax as well!

HOW DO YOU HELP PEOPLE WHO ARE EMBARRASSED BY THEIR SMILES?

Dr. Lewis: Our dentists will work with you to develop a “realistic” plan that will get you the beautiful and fully-functioning smile that you deserve. We will make sure you understand every step of the process and we will always be mindful of your budget. We also "listen" to your concerns and goals. We fully appreciate that we are working with you to create a smile that will last a lifetime.

DO YOU LIVE IN ST. JOHNS?

Both Drs. Lewis and Barlow along with their wives and families live in St Johns County. Dr. Barlow and his wife, Jamie, are natives of St Augustine. Many of our team members are proud St Johns County residents as well. We all appreciate this very special place.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WHEN YOU ARE NOT WORKING? Dr. Lewis and his wife Traci, the Practice Manager, enjoy spending time with their twin sons. Their boys are very active in youth sports including baseball, basketball, flag football, etc. which keeps them busy. They also enjoy spending time at home and enjoying all the outdoor activities available in Northeast Florida. Dr. Barlow, his wife Jamie, and The Dental Assisting Classroom their young with Instructor Brittany daughter enjoy spending time with family and friends, riding bikes, going to the beach, and watching Georgia Football.

FOOD!

Al Fresco Dining IN BEAU TIFUL

St. Augustine

N

ow that covid restrictions are lifting and life is resuming its normal frenzied pace, there is nothing like unwinding by sitting outside on a beautiful St. Johns evening enjoying a meal. Mesmerizing sunsets, soul-warming sunshine and locally inspired fare are just a few perks of outdoor dining at St. Augustine restaurants. From breezy beachside restaurants to romantic downtown courtyards, patio seating accentuates the natural beauty of Florida’s Historic Coast. Here, we introduce you to a few local favorites.

Beach Views

The Reef - Located oceanfront in Vilano Beach – literally steps from the Atlantic Ocean – this fine-dining establishment serves up an ocean view alongside creative cuisine. The menu features innovative chef specials highlighting fresh fish and seafood, balanced with steaks, pasta and more. The Reef Restaurant has an extensive wine list and full bar (with a daily happy hour) and also serves a not-to-be-missed Sunday brunch.

Bayfront Views

Draped with twinkling lights and shaded by leafy trees, Harry’s Seafood Bar & Grille courtyard in downtown St. Augustine is a charming setting for any occasion. Devotees of Cajun cuisine appreciate the selection of Louisiana classics, including crawfish etouffee, blackened redfish and po’boys, and out in the courtyard you can listen to live music while drinking a Hurricane or Sazerac. The decorative iron balcony offers a commanding view of the Bridge of Lions and is simply spellbinding. Whether you stop in for lunch or dinner, you’ll enjoy a bird’s eye view of St. Augustine life at A1A Ale Works Restaurant & Tap Room. Not to mention one of the best assortments of craft beers in town. Be sure to try their burgers or shrimp & grits.

Rooftop Views

This establishment’s second-floor deck is a favorite outdoor dining spot. Order the clam chowder to find out why Sunset Grille is a 21-time winner of The Great Chowder Debate, or have the mahi mahi, snapper or grouper cooked your way. And bring your friends – the menu features perfect-for-sharing double orders of its entrees. The Cellar Upstairs Wine Jazz & Blues Bar always hits the right notes, especially if you’d like some wine and live music to accompany your light appetizers. Located on the rooftop of the San Sebastian Winery, the views from the open-air deck are mesmerizing and romantic. You might even find yourself in the mood to dance with your partner.

Views on the San Sebastian River

Spectacular views await you at St. Augustine Fish Camp. Watch the boats go by as you indulge in some fresh oysters on a half shell and perfectly cooked seafood. This new addition to the culinary scene in St. Augustine lives up to all the hype, with friendly, knowledgeable staff, refreshing handcrafted cocktails and, yes, the amazing view.

Downtown Courtyards & Sidewalks

The Floridian - Go back in time to a simpler life of front porches and sweet tea in the heart of downtown. The fare is unique, outstanding and seasonal. OC Whites - Sit outside under tropical trees and jasmine vines with views of the bayfront, live music and delicious food. Avilles Street - Feel like you are dining on a European street with a myriad of tastes and sounds. This spot is also great for people watching.

Views on the Intracoastal Waterway

Nestled among the mangroves on the Intracoastal Waterway between Ponte Vedra Beach and St. Augustine, Cap’s on the Water is known for its breathtaking sunset views and mouthwatering seafood. Choose a seat on the popular deck or cozy up to the Sunset Oyster Bar, which serves up raw, steamed or baked oysters and other fresh-off-the-boat shellfish. There’s lots to like on the menu at Aunt Kate’s on the River. From classic Menorcan clam chowder to Pilau of the day, you’re just getting started. Enjoy some peel and eat shrimp or baby back ribs as you take in the gorgeous sunset view over the Intracoastal waterway. A local favorite, Kate’s is also popular with boaters and sailors, who often stop by as they meander down the Matanzas toward downtown.

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream—and not make dreams your master; If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools: If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Summer Fun

Challenge Accepted:

Engaging Teens Over the Summer

by Kimberly Green, Senior Program Director, ST. JOHNS COUNTY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT for the First Coast YMCA

School is out for the majority of St. Johns County teens and tweens, leaving parents everywhere to wonder: How do I keep my teenagers busy during summer break while I’m at work? For young kids, there’s nothing more enticing than summer vacation: two-plus months free from school with playdates, pool days and summer camp. But for parents of older kids, the summer months can be a source of anxiety. Instead of fretting about summer, make this break the best ever for your teenager. The next few months are the perfect time to help your teen find their true passion or at least try out a new hobby or two on their journey to adulthood.

CONSIDER THESE FINDINGS:

•Teens who engage in service are 50 percent less likely to engage in risky behavior. •Individuals with volunteer experience are 27 percent more likely to find employment than those without volunteer experience Here are a few resources and ideas from the First Coast YMCA to keep your teen or tween active and engaged (and off the sofa!) this summer:

1. SUMMER CHANGEMAKER:

A summer job at the First Coast YMCA can set your teen on a journey toward a life-long career. Just ask our president and CEO Eric Mann. He started as a YMCA camp counselor in North Carolina and worked his way up through various positions and Y branches across the country to his current role as president and CEO. We are actively hiring teenagers starting at ages 16 to be summer day camp counselors at one of our 23 sites across the First Coast, in addition to counselors for our overnight resident camp at Camp Immokalee and teens to help out in our KidZone program at local branches. Each week at camp, your teen can help campers Learn, Explore, Accept and Play as they discover new skills, build self-confidence and feel a sense of achievement and belonging. As a camp counselor, your teen will learn valuable skills such as communication, problem-solving, flexibility and confidence, all of which are key factors in the workplace!

2. LIFEGUARD ON DUTY:

Safety around water is one of the First Coast YMCA’s most important community missions as we try and keep kids and adults safe around all bodies of water. One of the best summer jobs you can have in Florida is being a lifeguard and there is no better place for your teen to get

20

certified than the YMCA. Lifeguards are trained in numerous skills such as first aid, CPR and AED. Your teen will take this knowledge with them and know how to react during an emergency. More so, lifeguarding offers flexible hours, a built-in summer job for life, the opportunity to form new friendships, responsibility and is a great resume booster.

3. ENROLL IN TEEN LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS:

This summer, the First Coast YMCA is also offering teens ages 12-15 the opportunity to participate in several Teen Summer Leadership Camps to broaden their skill sets. From June 14-August 6, teenagers can join their peers at the YMCA at Nocatee and YMCA at the Flagler Health+ Village in St. Johns County in this fun program to earn 60 community service hours, while learning about career readiness and project management. They will also be mentored by YMCA leadership staff. While at camp, teens can also train and earn their junior lifeguard certifications, CPR/First Aid certifications and sports official certifications for free! For more information about Teen Leadership Camps, please email Kimberly Green at kgreen@fcymca.org. Help your teenagers discover their full potential this summer by researching different opportunities at your local YMCA. For more information, visit fcymca.org or email Kimberly Green directly at kgreen@fcymca.org.

Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo with special guest John Waite Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo with special guest John Waite to take the stage at The St. Augustine Amphitheatre on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 St. Augustine, Fla. (May 18, 2021) – The St. Augustine is thrilled to announce that Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo with special guest John Waite will take the stage at The Amp on Wednesday, October 20, 2021. Tickets go on sale this Friday, May 21 at 10:00am at The St. Augustine Amphitheatre Box Office and online at Ticketmaster.com. Pat Benatar’s staggering vocals and take-no-prisoners attitude, along with Neil Giraldo’s trailblazing artistry as a guitarist, producer and songwriter forged the undeniable chemistry and unique sound that created some of rocks most memorable hits including “We Belong”, “Invincible”, “Love Is A Battlefield”, “Promises In The Dark”, “We Live For Love”, “Heartbreaker” and “Hell Is For Children”. Together they have created two multi-platinum, five platinum and three gold albums, as well as nineteen Top 40 hits. They have sold over thirty million records worldwide and have won an unprecedented four consecutive GRAMMY® awards. Their rock and roll love affair has endured for more than three and a half decades. Pat and Neil continue to tour, selling out concerts everywhere. Their chemistry will undoubtedly be thrilling music fans forever. Countless musicians of far lesser accomplishment have probably made similar statements regarding their own personal creative process, but when the confession comes from John Waite – whose been successfully writing, recording and performing some of the most listenable, enduring and appreciated popular music for more than 35 years – one cannot help but both recognize and marvel at the shimmering legacy of this British born rock star.

Now with a second location on CR 210:

The ride began when Waite was tapped as bassist and lead vocalist for the Babys who rocketed to Top 20 chart positions with a pair of infections hits, “Isn’t it Time'' from the band’s sophomore LP, Broken Heart in 1977 and the monster ballad, “Every Time I Think of You” off 1978’s Head First. But it was the album’s rhythmically aggressive and seductive title track where fans got

their first glimpse of the authentic John Waite, a no-holds barred rock n’ roll performer devoted heart and soul to live performance and making sure every fan in the audience left the concert hall just as elated and exhausted as the band they’d paid to see. Tickets for Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo with special guest John Waite go on sale this Friday, May 21 at 10:00am at The St. Augustine. Amphitheatre Box Office and online at Ticketmaster.com. Baptist Medical Center South earns highest mark for patient safety The Leapfrog Group awards Baptist South an A-rating for dedication to providing safe, quality patient care.

B

aptist Medical Center South received an ‘A’ rating in the spring 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, a national distinction recognizing achievements in providing the safest health care for patients. “To receive an ‘A’ patient safety rating shows our consistent and unwavering approach to making sure our patients receive the safest, highest quality care in all situations,” said Hospital President Nicole Thomas, FACHE. “Our dedicated team members and physicians make safety their No. 1 priority each and every day.” Baptist Nassau, Baptist Beaches and Baptist Jacksonville also received ‘A’ safety ratings. “Our health care teams are committed to constant monitoring and improving our patient safety standards,” said Elizabeth Ransom, MD, FACS, executive vice president and chief physician executive for Baptist Health. “Safety is ingrained in our culture through collaboration and open communication – which are vital in achieving the highest quality standards in our hospitals.” Baptist South’s safety and quality protocols have been further enhanced since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis through a number of additional measures. Separate respiratory care units for COVID-19 patients, designated staff and equipment for COVID-19 rooms, and the use of advanced UV technology for decontamination are among the many safety reinforcements the health system has implemented. “An ‘A’ safety grade is an elite designation that your community should be proud of,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “The past year has been extraordinarily difficult for hospitals, but Baptist Health shows us it is possible to keep a laser focus on patients and their

safety, no matter what it takes.” The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade assigns an A, B, C, D or F grade to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms among patients in their care. Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,700 U.S. acutecare hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public. The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety. The Safety Grade is a letter grade assigned to all general hospitals across the country and updated every six months, assessing how well the hospital prevents medical errors and other harms to patients.
