wetism Wonderland is an autism therapy center created by Dr. Stephanie Vavilala, Ed.D., LMHC, BCBA, RPT-S. Dr. Vavilala struggled with infertility and after much struggle, conceived her daughter, Sabita. Her pregnancy with Sabita was normal and Dr. Vavilala and her husband, Raj, were head over heels in love with their miracle baby. All seemed to be going well until she was around two years old, when they noticed she wasn’t developing the same way other kids her age were. Officially, when Sabita was two she was diagnosed with autism. Sabita is also non-verbal and uses an ipad communication program to talk. Dr. Vavilala wanted to do everything in her power to help Sabita and others like her to succeed and flourish, wherever they were in their journey. Awetism Wonderland was born out of the need for Sabita and other children like her to receive all of their therapies under one roof. Awetism Wonderland was named after the concept of discovering the awe and wonder of autism instead of looking at it as a bad thing. It’s a way of seeing the world differently. While Awetism Wonderland offers traditional autism therapies like ABA, PT/OT/ST, and Anat Banial Therapy, they also provide therapies that give children the ability to explore their world, such as dance, music, art, and recreational therapies. They also offer a functional academic program that fosters a non-traditional learning environment so kids with autism can learn what is functional, at their pace, the way they learn best.

Bartram Dental Center

Dr. Jason Lewis & Dr. Royce Barlow 55 Jaidev Road St. Johns, FL 32259 904.201.6000 bartramdental.com

Bartram Dental Center, BDC, has been in business since 2005, and its focus has always remained on positivity, compassion, teamwork, and family with the goal of providing patients with quality care and treatment. The doctors, Dr. Jason Lewis and Dr. Royce Barlow live and work in St. Johns along with their families.

BDC made an investment to become a “Complete Health” dental practice and continue to receive training to enhance the level of care and connection to the medical community of their patients. For patients this means they are focused on helping them maintain their very best “complete health” –not just ideal “dental health”.

As they designed their new office, providing a premier patient experience was always their intention. From the inviting lobby, the offer of a blanket, a warm hand towel, or a fresh baked cookie, they want patients to truly enjoy their time. Customer service is a lost art in the medical profession, and they are passionate about providing it for their patient family.

BDC is also home to Bartram Dental Assisting School (BDAS). Classes are held in the dedicated classroom space on Saturdays 8 AM – 5 PM and is available for community use during the week. Educating students on the importance of caring for patients, professionalism, chairside technique, and enabling them for success is something they are proud to contribute to the dental community.

FIND WHERE YOU BELONG. FIND YOUR Y. At the Y, you’ll find more than just a place to work out—you might just find a place to work. With opportunities to inspire youth, help others live healthier, and give back to your community, you’ll discover a greater sense of purpose, too.

5 Simple Ways to Live a Heart-Healthy Lifestyle Jessica Ortiz, Registered Dietician YMCA of Florida’s First Coast

Y

ou may identify February with heart decor and Valentine’s Day, but did you know it's also American Heart Health Month? Each year, February serves as a reminder to focus on the health of our hearts and encourage steps towards preventing heart disease among our families, friends, and communities. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the country with approximately 25% of fatalities having to do with the heart. Heart disease refers to several types of heart conditions including high blood pressure, which more than 80 million adult Americans struggle with, and less than half have under control, according to the American Heart Association. The First Coast YMCA is dedicated to educating and helping individuals across all walks of life on how to lead healthier lifestyles. When it comes to your heart, monitoring, medication and implementing simple lifestyle changes can help lower blood pressure and improve overall heart health. Here are five ways to get started on living a heart-healthy lifestyle:

1. Be Mindful of Alcohol Consumption

You may have heard a popular belief that moderate drinking, especially with red wine, can benefit your heart health. However, the keyword we should be reminded of is “moderate.” Moderate drinking typically equates to one 5 ounce glass per day for women and one to two for men. Overconsumption of alcohol can raise blood pressure and lead to heart muscle diseases as well as other serious health problems including liver disease and cancer.

2. Avoid Trans Fats

Trans fats are industry-produced fats that are used in packaged goods, snacks, and margarine to add texture and flavor. Trans fats increase cholesterol levels, which can clog arteries and heighten the risk of clots, leading to heart attack or stroke. Trans fats virtually have no health benefit, it is recommended to limit your intake of trans fats as much as possible. Instead, incorporate foods into your diet that are high in healthy fats such as whole grains, oatmeal, avocadoes, fresh fruit, chickpeas, Greek yogurt, fish, and nuts.

the flossing step allows bacteria to collect below the gum line, which causes diseased pockets in your gums.

5.Monitor Your Blood Pressure

The YMCA of Florida’s First Coast is part of a nationwide initiative to prevent heart disease through a heart-healthy diet, self-monitoring, and recording blood pressure. The Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program pairs individuals up with a Healthy Heart Ambassador, to provide ongoing personalized support and teach participants how to properly use a selfmonitoring blood pressure cuff to regularly self-monitor at home. Whether you have high blood pressure, are at risk for heart disease, or want to keep maintaining a healthy heart, the First Coast YMCA offers a community of diverse individuals and resources that can help to support and reach your goals. To find your Y and learn more, visit https://fcymca. org/

3.Add 30 Minutes of Moderate Exercise a Day

Regular exercise is the single most important key to heart health. It can be as simple as taking a daily walk, jog, enjoying a bike ride or even cleaning the house, all activity counts. The time can even be split up throughout the day if you cannot complete the 30 minutes consecutively. Take your health and your heart into your own hands and start implementing movement that gets your heart pumping each day.

Now with a second location on CR 210: 4.Practice Good Dental Hygiene

Did you know that dental health can serve as a good indication of heart and overall health? According to Harvard Medical School, individuals with gum disease have up to three times the risk of experiencing serious cardiovascular issues such as heart attacks and strokes. To prevent gum disease, brush and be sure to floss your teeth daily. Skipping

Are You Kissable? by Jason Lewis, DDS, FAGD Bartram Dental Center (BartramDental.com)

D

o you remember your first kiss? Do you remember that person’s name? Was it electric, or a fumbling mess? Kissing boosts trust with the person you are with and it is an expression of love. Also… it’s kinda fun! But nothing, and I mean nothing, can ruin a kiss like bad breath. So, as Valentine’s Day approaches, let’s take a look at 3 reasons people have chronic bad breath.

Tobacco If you smoke, it doesn’t matter how many mints you suck on, you absolutely have “smoker’s breath”. After smoking a cigarette, the smoke lingers in your throat and lungs and recirculates as you breathe and speak. The smoke also leaves behind a chemical compound that mixes with your saliva. This mixture is that stale, smokey smell that we are all too familiar. The bad breath it causes is, however, a mild concern compared to the other medical issues tobacco can lead to. So please, consult with your doctor immediately to develop a plan to remove tobacco from your routine.

22

Dry Mouth If you have a dry mouth, mints might help a little, but you are definitely going to continue to have this problem. When your mouth is dry, you don’t have the saliva available to continuously rinse your mouth. This dry environment is ideal for bacteria to quickly reproduce. As gross as it sounds, the odor is the smell from the waste products of those bacteria. (Everyone say YUCK!) Medications, medical conditions, and tooth decay can all cause dry mouth. Talk to your doctor about treatment alternatives and speak with your dentist about removing the tooth decay and incorporating a prescription strength mouth rinse or toothpaste.

Periodontal Disease Periodontal disease, or gum disease, works much like having a dry mouth. The bacteria find pockets in the gums to multiply, leading to a foul odor. The CDC states that 47% of adults over 30 have periodontal disease and that jumps to 70% after age 65. Most

people don’t even know they have this disease because it isn’t “painful”. Bad breath and bleeding gums are big indicators of periodontal disease. Because the gums have an open lesion, the bacteria can get into the bloodstream, thus throughout your entire body. Periodontal disease can lead to heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and various other medical conditions. Increasing the frequency of your dental visits is step one. Between visits, using custom-fit periodontal trays at home are imperative to defeating periodontal disease. These trays, worn 10 minutes a day, can hold medication in those gum pockets and kill the unwanted bacteria. It is a very easy fix for a very complicated problem. While this started as a cheeky discussion of bad breath, it is clear that chronic bad breath is a sign of a more serious problem. Please take the necessary steps to identify and treat the root cause of the bad breath you are having so that you may live a long, vital life, full of laughs and yes… kisses.

Cardiac gender gap

by Baptist Heath

Men and women have different heart attack symptoms. Heart attacks are more common and often strike earlier in men, but according to researchers, women are more likely to die from the condition. One reason is that women often experience a combination of less-recognized symptoms, which they may attribute to something non-lifethreatening. In addition, women having heart attacks wait more than 30% longer than men to seek treatment, studies show. “Many women are focused on the daily aspects of their busy lives, which can include caring for children, a spouse or relatives, and tend to minimize their own symptoms,” said Andre Macedo Dias, MD, a, cardiologist with Baptist Heart Specialists. “It is very important not to disregard those symptoms and to seek medical attention. This is especially important in women who have risk factors or a strong family history of cardiovascular disease.” If you experience any of these warnings signs, dial 911 immediately, try to stay calm and take deep breaths while you wait for first responders to arrive. Baptist Heart Specialists is committed to advanced, leading-edge prevention, diagnosis and treatment for heart and vascular conditions at every stage of life. A Message From The Vet by Dr. Deckard, DVM, Pets R Family

DENTAL HEALTH FOR OUR PETS It will come as a surprise to many pet owners that most of our pets have some form of dental disease. It’s not just about bad breath and stained teeth, however; most dental disease is hidden beneath the gum line – a condition referred to as periodontal disease. Periodontal disease can be a life-altering problem for many pets. Bacteria that accumulates on the surface of teeth builds up over time to form hard plaques called tartar. Some of that bacteria creeps under the surface of the gum line, invading the ligaments and bone that hold the teeth in place in the mouth. Over time,

those tissues break down and the teeth may start to loosen or harbor infection that can affect teeth at the roots. Tooth root abscesses are painful, and often cause swelling or bleeding in the mouth, and can affect your pet’s quality of life. Sometimes the diseased teeth fall out on their own, but when they do, they often leave remnants behind that continue to break down the structures under the gum line. Bacteria from the mouth can also invade the bloodstream, and cause infections in the kidneys, liver, and even the heart – which can be irreversible.

This picture (below) is a real example of a dog’s teeth in our hospital that had severe periodontal disease as a result of heavy tartar build up. Most dogs do not demonstrate signs of pain such as drooling, teeth chattering or not eating, however, we know that they are having serious pain. Although these teeth look severe, this patient surprised us and had to have only a few teeth extracted during his dental. The owner reported that he felt dramatically better after the dental which surprised her. Many of the signs that pet parents think are age related, are actually due to pain they are experiencing either with their mouths or orthopedic disease.

The best thing to do for your pet is to brush their teeth daily, or at least a few times a week – and start them young! There are many different pet-specific toothbrushes and toothpastes that you can buy at your veterinarian’s office or reputable pet stores that make brushing easy. Please keep in mind that human toothpaste is NOT meant for pets, as fluoride, xylitol, and other ingredients in our toothpastes can be toxic to pets. Dental chews and treats that have the seal of approval from the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) are proven to be effective if used as directed. Keep in mind, however, that if

your pet already has tartar built up on their teeth, there is nothing that can remove it other than a professional cleaning. Since dental cleanings require general anesthesia, bloodwork and other pre-operative testing is recommended prior to the procedure, to ensure your pet is healthy enough to undergo the procedure. Many people are hesitant to have their older pet go under anesthesia for a dental cleaning, but age is not a disease, and many times the benefits of having your pet’s teeth cleaned outweigh the risks of the anesthesia. Follow your vet’s advice on what pre-operative testing they would want to perform. Once the teeth are cleaned and polished, a dental sealant can be applied for further protection. This dental sealant is best followed by either special dental chews or weekly sealant applied at home. This along with instituting a regular tooth brushing routine, and incorporating other home care treatments, dental foods, and treats will help stave off problems in the future. Realize that no matter how diligent you are with home care, nothing stops the need for a professional cleaning under general anesthesia on a regular basis. Good dental health is vital to the overall health of your pet; fresh breath and pearly whites can help your pet live a long, fulfilling life free of dental pain, not to mention a kissable smile!
