Inspired and thoughtfully designed kids clothes under the Jet & Ivy signature label jetandivy.com

T

eri-ann Wigfield – entrepreneur, executive, mother, and wife – uses well-honed skills and knowledge from a successful retail career coupled with a laser-focused eye for design to create and manufacture a private brand of clothing for fast-growing toddlers to tweens called Jet & Ivy. Under this signature label, she and husband David Perez skillfully bring to life a new kind of store featuring an ultra-modern, light, and airy interior to showcase Jet & Ivy designs for fast and growing kids, which are uniquely complemented with a handpicked assortment of favorite upscale brands not found in our area that are of the same quality and stylish clothing children will love to wear.

6

Inspired by her daughter, husband, and love of retailing, she’s a clothing designer for kids with a brilliant idea that Jet & Ivy clothes won’t just hang in the closet, but be worn to climb trees, jump in puddles, run on grassy fields or beach sand, and hop on bicycles as well as to church or the country club. Her clothes move, make a statement, and are good-looking, soft, and comfortable. Most of all kids come to Jet & Ivy to engage in a fun experience, and they’ll want to try on their favorites in-store for fit and feel. This clothing is for them. Kids shop alone or with adults to find the next apparel trend that reflects the Florida lifestyle. The mix n’ match line pairs with cool shoes and accessories, including matching pet apparel approved by the store mascot, Cooper the Terrier. Along with their daughter Bailey, each member of the family has a hand in design development. The label is complemented with high-end fashion brands, too – check the website. By being “hands-on”, Teri-ann is not locked-in to buying stock off market racks. She re-imagines each season and brings into reality designs kids want to wear, which is why kids choose Jet & Ivy clothing over mass-produced clothes. Teri-ann and family enjoy being residents of St. Johns County. She also understands the importance of giving back. As her community commitment, $1 from every item sold is donated to St. Johns Cares, a valuable benefit of shopping at Jet & Ivy.

Meet family physician Dr. James Marylin James, DO, is a family medicine physician at Baptist Primary Care’s new location in St. Johns off of County Road 210 near the South Hampton neighborhood. Dr. James treats patients of all ages, from toddlers to seniors. She has a strong interest in holistic medicine, combining the best of Eastern and Western approaches to her patients’ health care whenever possible, including offering nutrition and lifestyle advice or even yoga and meditation therapy. Her areas of expertise include: • • • •

Women’s health Chronic disease management Nutrition and lifestyle counseling Treatment of injuries and diseases affecting the muscles, bones and joints of the limbs and spine

• Osteopathic manual therapy, which is a hands-on approach to treating musculoskeletal disorders • Diabetes management

What’s your favorite thing about helping people? “If health is lost, everything is lost.” My grandfather, who was also a physician, taught me that. Health is the most valuable thing we have, and I love being able to help others achieve optimal health which in turn translates to a happier life. What is your patient care philosophy? I have a holistic approach to health and wellness where I take into consideration the mind-bodyspirit connection. I believe the symptom isn’t the problem but it’s rather a sign that the body is out of balance and seeking help. I teach my patients to learn what these signals mean and how to develop a different approach that fosters compassion, patience, and love towards their own body in order to heal. This involves utilizing both mainstay and alternative approaches based on the patient’s needs and personal health care philosophy. Why did you decide to become a family medicine physician? I love having the opportunity to wear different hats to best fit my patient’s needs. For instance, my

patients may need someone to listen, so I will be that person who they can trust; they may need help losing weight, so I will provide nutrition coaching; if they have an acute problem, I can provide urgent care services; if they have a pulled muscle, I will offer manual therapy and use my osteopathy skills. I love being able to help my patients with a wide range of health conditions. What are some interesting facts about yourself? I have great appreciation for the performing arts and have been a dancer for most of my life. Recently I also picked up the cello again after almost a decade and wish to further my musical skills. Something else I’ve delved into recently is Ayurvedic medicine, a 5,000-year-old science that originated in India and is still practiced widely. After experiencing Ayurveda’s power to transform, I hope to train further in this so I could bring it to my patients. Meanwhile, I finished my training as a yoga instructor in India and incorporate both yoga and meditation into my patients’ care. I also love to cook and share many of my healthy recipes with patients.

Christmas Traditions in the Ancient City By Lori Allen, Local Foodie So for our last issue of what has been an unprecedented year 2020 in our lives, I’ve chosen to share with you my special holiday traditions in our beautiful city. Over this past year, we have learned to adjust and find the little glimmers of light and hope wherever we can. St Augustine Nights of Lights is one of those wonders that provide me with that very glimmer. It is one of the most stunning and spectacular sights and I feel so very fortunate to be able to view it year after year. People in the past have come in droves from all over the world just to see what we get to see for two magical months. This year might be a year of limitations but the city will not be any less spectacular. It is not just the twinkling bright white lights that make it so wonderful but you can hear the laughter, smell the aromas and feel the holiday spirit in the air. Christmas spirit - The code of generosity, kindness, and charity toward others is enforced by no one other than ourselves. There are places where this code is strong, and these places (or people) are said to have strong Christmas spirit. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine provides that place for me. We love to visit this church to light a candle in remembrance of our family that we have lost and say a special Christmas prayer/wish to them to let them know that they have not been forgotten. For some reason, the ritual of lighting the candle gives a tiny bit of comfort and envelops our hearts which brings on the Christmas spirit. Afterward, as we step outside of the church we are immediately immersed in all the beautiful twinkling white lights, it's breathtaking! The next stop is the Tini Martini bar (24 Avenida Menendez St. Augustine 32084 (904) 263-4882)

located on the veranda of the Casablanca Inn on the bay front. Photo Courtesy of The Tini Martini Bar, St. Augustine We love to take a moment and enjoy and this is the perfect spot This truly is a hole in the wall but such a unique to sit among the thousands of twinkling lights gem. Any local can tell you where it's at and it is as well as sipping a martini of course. One of a must-stop for us on our holiday trek. They have my favs is the Sparkling Raspberry which has so many unusual and exotic beers from around raspberry vodka, Chambord, cranberry juice and the world that there is no way I could name them LaMarca Prosecco float. The combination of all! They are constantly bringing in new ones so raspberry and cranberry along with a little bubyou never know what else you may want to try. bly is truly a festive cocktail! My hubby loves the Tahiti Tini (I think he wishes he was in Tahiti The staff is so knowledgeable and will tell you during the holidays- don’t we all?) Between the all about the beers and even pour them into mango vodka, banana liqueur a little grapefruit the proper glass. Different beers need room to to round out the sweetness one sip of this and breathe to get the most hops and flavor out of you are immediately taken away to the islands. I them so the glass is important. Sometimes we love that this place does not skimp, you get the try and find a beer that’s the furthest away like entire shaker left with you to refill as you wish! Africa and other times we let the staff know our likes and go with their suggestions. We have Dinner is at Pizzalley's Chianti Room (60 tried some with caramel flavor that had very little Charlotte St St. Augustine, FL 32084 P: 904fruit from the hops but actually picks up more 825-4100) It is one of the only 20 restaurants of the hop bitterness especially in the aftertaste. to receive the National Award of Excellence And some that had a more subtle hop flavor from the American Culinary Federation across picking up some grapefruit tones. We even love the country. You will know you have found the the traditional German beers which are light and right spot when your nose hits the door and all crisp. I had to laugh at this one they had on tap the aromas of garlic, tomato sauce, and simone time…Blue Point Toxic Sludge Black IPA mering herbs and spices fill your senses. I love but I wasn’t ambitious enough to get it…maybe that you can sit right up front and watch the you should give it a try! chefs prepare all the enticing foods. There are continued on page 12 so many dishes to choose from, like the lobster ravioli stuffed with chunks of juicy main lobster then smothered with a creamy crabmeat roasted pepper sauce or their Mediterranean chicken topped with tangy feta, black olives, and fresh homemade bruschetta. Of course, their Pizza is excellent as well. The dining experience is so warm and friendly that it really gives you that festive holiday feeling. There can be a wait during the holiday rush so they provide you with a text when your table is ready. This always works well for us because we like to try out the next place before our meal. Did someone say dessert? After admiring the sparkling beautiful lights or possibly taking a Trolley Ride we are ready for a sweet treat. Depending on our mood and if we have the time to relax and enjoy a nice glass of wine or cocktail. Old City House (115 Cordova Street St. Augustine, FL 32084T: (904) 826-0113) is where we will be. gian pearl sugar, then cooked and caramelized made fresh to order on their hot cast iron press. They have some fun and flavorful toppings such as candied pecans, candied bacon, fresh berries, and homemade marshmallow fluff! My son is all about the Ping Island milkshake. It is made with vanilla soft serve, peanut butter, chocolate sauce, marshmallow fluff, and graham cracker crumbs. The smile on his face when they serve him says it all! (Merry Christmas to me!) My hubby on the other hand prefers a more “grownup” milkshake...if there is such a thing. He gets Air Kentucky. Which is made with butter pecan soft serve, real maple syrup, candied pecans topped with Bourbon whipped cream. It’s nutty and sweet all rolled into one fantastic milkshake! So after our Christmas tour and food coma, we stumble on home. But we know that we will be back, for there are endless places to try and experience all while enjoying the stunning Nights of Lights. Happy Holidays to you all and may you and your families be safe during the holiday season and especially safe during this pandemic. Hug your loved ones even if it’s virtually. Life is oh so short!

What is Bourbon? by Frank Dvoravic Owner of Rivertown Fine Wine & Spirits

LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO DRINK CHEAP BOURBON........

B

ourbon is a type of American whiskey distilled primarily from 51% corn mash. In the past, it needed to be aged in new charred oak barrels, but no longer. Distillers are aging them in different types of containers. In the past a minimum of 3 years was required, but no longer. In 2013, Buffalo Trace Distillery, who is famous for Pappy Van Winkle, determined it had a problem for most of their products. As did other Bourbon distillers. " Fans were drinking more Bourbon than the company had predicted". What do all the Bourbon producers do? They must start bottling aged Bourbons earlier, meaning they could no longer age their products for 8,9,10,13,14, years etc. So they took the age statements off the bottles and started aging the same products for many years less. Does this make the Bourbon taste different? Yes, to the experienced Bourbon connoisseurs.... Does the age make it better? Not necessarily. When people de-

16

scribe a Bourbon as being better than another, they are merely stating their opinion! What is full proof? Most Bourbons come out of the barrel after aging, at a proof from around 110 proof to 140 proof. Distillers add spring water to lower the proof to the desired proof, normally not lower than 80 proof. When no spring water is added, and bottled directly from the barrel, it is called either Full Proof, Barrel Proof, or Cask Strength. What makes rare Bourbons command such high selling prices? Supply and Demand! That’s how simple it is. If you WANT a bottle of something that comes out rarely, like " Old Forester Birthday Bourbon ", you will pay what it is worth to you ! Thus , supply and demand determines what products sell for once they are in limited availability. What is " single barrel "? All bottles of Bourbon that are bottled from one barrel and not blended with other barrels are called Single Barrel. What is " small batch "? A small limited quantity of barrels selected by the master distiller are blended together to get the flavor profile that he or she desires. Then it becomes a Small

Batch. What should you do as a new Bourbon drinker? Try to sample as many neat, no mixers. Or add a small amount of water. Once you get to a point where you can taste the difference, you will enjoy Bourbons more. Start a collection of bottles of different ages and brands at home, and then you can tell better when you sample side by side, against each other. Now, invite friends over and convince them that "you are now a Bourbon connoisseur "! Good Luck and have fun. Remember, LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO DRINK CHEAP BOURBON........

A Message From The Vet by Dr. Deckard, DVM, Pets R Family

Spotlight on Intestinal Parasites

Hookworms

I

n the United States, small animal veterinary medicine recognizes several intestinal parasites as common: tapeworms, roundworms, whipworms, and hookworms. Of those, hookworms are the most prolific intestinal parasite we see in dogs and cats – especially in warm, humid regions like Florida. Hookworms are small, about 1cm long, and are named for their hook-like shape. They attach to the intestinal wall with their mouths and feed on a host’s blood, making them particularly dangerous. In puppies and debilitated dogs and cats, hookworms can be lethal, causing anemia and eventual death if not treated. Most other common intestinal parasites feed on nutrients from a host’s intestinal tract, and can still cause significant illness. However, hookworms are the most detrimental and biggest concern. Once the adult hookworm attaches to the wall of the small intestine, it feeds and mates, eventually producing eggs. The eggs are released into the intestinal contents, passed in the stool, and hatch into their larval stage in the soil. The larva can infect a host in several ways; infected dogs will pass it to unborn or nursing puppies, direct ingestion of the soil (as a pet is cleaning themselves or if they eat dirt,) eating an infected prey animal,

or the larva can burrow directly through the host’s skin. Cats are infected with hookworms either through contaminated soil, or eating an infected prey animal; they do not pass it to unborn or nursing kittens. The life cycle is the same however. Once inside the host, the larvae make their way to the intestine where they mature into adulthood. Some, however, will tunnel through the intestine and migrate into the lung tissue, where they continue to develop, and eventually get coughed up and swallowed to make their way into the intestine. Some larvae even encyst in other tissues in the body and go dormant, emerging and continuing their migration into the intestine at random times! Kittens and Puppies should be dewormed with a broad spectrum de-wormer starting about 3 weeks of age, or as soon as possible after adoption. Your vet will check a stool sample to see if they have active worms; your pet should be dewormed even if the stool sample is negative to cover for possible latent infection. All dogs and cats should be on heartworm prevention, and most preventions have an additional medication to take care of any new intestinal parasites they may pick up.

Your vet will help guide you as to the best one for your pet. Hookworms are transmittable to humans, so it is extremely important to follow your vet’s recommendations to keep your pets free of parasites. In humans, they do not affect the gastrointestinal tract, but they do burrow through the skin and cause a condition called cutaneous larval migrans, which causes inflamed, itchy lesions under the skin! Don’t walk around barefoot in the yard if your dog or cat has hookworms! Unfortunately, there is no way to decontaminate your yard once your pet is infected. The best course of action is to pick up stools as soon as possible, before the eggs have an opportunity to get into the soil. The good news is hookworm eggs only live for a few months, and do not survive freezing temperatures. Hookworms are a significant parasite for our pets, and as zoonitic parasites (transmittable to humans) they are also considered a human hazard. Please follow your vet’s advice on how to keep your pet safe from hookworms, which usually includes keeping your pet on year-round prevention medication, and checking stool samples often.
