Your New

#1

on your To–Do List!

When you think of April, do you begin mentally planning beach trips and summer vacations? Maybe a baseball game you just can’t wait to watch! If I had to guess, an oral cancer screening is not at the top of your to – do list. However, it should be! April is Oral Cancer Awareness month and the perfect time to educate yourself on risk factors, and how your dentist can detect early signs of oral cancer!

WHO IS AT RISK?

It is estimated that in 2022 there will be 54,000 new cases diagnosed with oral cancer. When you think of oral cancer, you might assume that only current smokers or people that use chewing tobacco are at risk. Wrong. Tobacco of any kind including - cigarettes, vaping, electronic cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco and snuff are significant risk factors for developing oral cancer. Heavy alcohol use, and a history of significant sun exposure can increase the risk of lip cancer as well. Surprisingly, the fastest growing group of oral cancer cases are now young (under 45) non-smokers who have been exposed to HPV (human

papillomavirus). Have you noticed a sore that has been there more than 14 days? Maybe a little discoloration in a specific area of your mouth? It could be something that seems as normal as trouble chewing, trouble moving the jaw and/or tongue can also be a symptom. It is important to remember that oral cancer doesn’t always present with symptoms in early stages. That is why getting an annual screening is so important!

HAVE YOU BEEN SCREENED?

As you have learned, there are many risk factors for oral cancer. Part of what we do as a Complete Health Practice is we encourage each of our patients to have an oral cancer screening yearly. We utilize a technology called OralID. OralID is handheld and is comparable to a small flashlight. The fluorescence technology is optical based and allows the hygienist or doctor to clearly visualize oral mucosal abnormalities such as oral cancer or pre-cancer in 2 minutes. If you have never heard of this technology, we encourage you to ask your dentist if they provide this

or a similar examination and add it to your routine wellness visits. The goal is NOT to find cancer. Our goal is to identify abnormalities before they progress into cancer. This yearly and short exam is an important component of keeping yourself as healthy as possible. Because don’t forget, summer will be here before we know it and there are memories to be made!

Keeping Your Kids Engaged This Summer at The First Coast YMCA by Candace Burrows, Associate Vice President Day Camp, Family Programs and Community Engagement, YMCA of Florida’s First Coast

Summer days aren’t too far away! As the end of the school year rapidly approaches, many parents are starting to plan activities to keep their kids entertained and engaged throughout the summer. Across St. Johns County, the First Coast YMCA is offering Summer Camp at six different locations from June 6 through August 5 for ages 5 to 12. Consider how your child can make the most of their summer break by enrolling them in youth programs offered through the First Coast YMCA. The Y is dedicated to youth development and enrichment yearround. Learning shouldn’t be limited to the classroom, and certainly shouldn’t be postponed during the summer months. To keep your child engaged all summer long, the First Coast YMCA offers summer day camps, specialty camps and sports leagues.

First Coast YMCA Summer Camp

Our all-day, on-site summer camp offers a new theme each week that will help campers discover new skills, build selfconfidence and feel a sense of achievement and belonging. Each week is also dedicated to honing in on a different character trait to encourage the Y’s core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. Throughout the camp, kids participate in STEM, arts and humanities, literacy, sports, swimming and other outdoor activities. Campers have plenty of opportunity to develop new skills, form a sense of identity, thrive in teamwork and create memories to last a lifetime.

Specialty Camps

In addition to the summer day camp, YMCA branches offer a variety of specialty

24

camps. Kids can spend their day at camp focusing on a specific activity or subject such as cooking, arts & crafts and dance. Campers can devote a week or more to building a new skill-set and learning more about something that interests them. Y branches also offer basketball, soccer, tennis and a multisport camp for young athletes. The multisport camp introduces kids to a variety of sports with an emphasis on teamwork and developing strong athletic skills.

Sports Leagues

Also for athletes, Y branches offer Youth Sports for kids to compete and play alongside friends. Participating in youth sports keeps kids active while teaching friendly competition and healthy practices for life. Spring Volleyball and Flag Football will run from the end of April through early June, and Summer Basketball will follow, beginning June 17 and ending August 6.

There are several benefits for families as members of the First Coast YMCA including 20% off the weekly camp fee per child, a waived registration fee, free registration for one sports league and use of the KidZone at your Y branch to keep the kids safe and entertained while parents workout. Whether you’re looking for a week’s worth of activity or to fill the entire summer with fun at the Y, there's an opportunity to learn, grow and belong at your local YMCA. The YMCA of Florida’s First Coast provides enriching activities for children all summer long, and welcomes all children and their families. For more information or to register for the First Coast YMCA’s summer Youth Development programs, activities and classes visit https://fcymca.org/programs/ camp/.

FIND WHERE YOU BELONG. FIND YOUR Y. At the Y, you’ll find more than just a place to work out—you might just find a place to work. With opportunities to inspire youth, help others live healthier, and give back to your community, you’ll discover a greater sense of purpose, too.

Autism Awareness

Understanding & Embracing Autism Its Ok To Be Different! by Stephanie Vavilala, Ed.D, BCBA, LMHC, RPT-S

It’s Autism Awareness Month, or what we call AWEtism Awareness Month. There are many ideas and concepts about autism that may be completely foreign to anyone not immersed in the autism world. This special month sheds light on all things autism! We are Awetism Wonderland, an autism center located in St. Augustine, right off of I-95 and International Gold Parkway. Our AWEsome kids come to our center for a variety of needs including our academic program and therapies including ABA (applied behavioral therapy), Anat Banial, physical/speech/occupational and so many more that are essential in helping people living with AWEtism.

What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopment disorder that impacts how someone relates and communicates with the world around them. Because the spectrum of how it affects people is so vast, there isn’t one specific symptom that you can pinpoint that everyone with autism has. Many people with ASD have difficulty with social interactions, have repetitive behaviors (referred to as ‘stimming’), obsessive about things they are interested in, and impulsive behaviors.

Embracing Awetism At Awetism Wonderland, we embrace the “awe and wonder” of AWEtism by approaching therapies and academics

through the concept that people with AWEtism see the world differently through processing what comes into their senses differently. Many traditional AWEtism therapies, applied behavioral or “ABA”, take a corrective or squashing approach in hopes of extinguishing the undesired behavior in order to try to make the child behave like more of a “neurotypical” child. Instead, we fully believe in embracing who the child is and where they are to guide their therapies to helping them achieve success in whatever they’re looking to achieve success in. Through our approach to ABA therapy, we put a heavy focus on life skills that can be replicated at home, school, or elsewhere so that children on the spectrum can gain more independence. This could look like anything from brushing their teeth or combing their hair to cooking themselves a simple meal.

Academic Support

One of our primary focuses is also on academics. While we are not a school, our academics program was created to support families of children with ASD. It can be very difficult to navigate the public school system,

so many parents choose to home school. Unfortunately, many parents find themselves frustrated from not being equipped to teach someone with ASD, much less be a teacher at all. Our academics program caters to each individual students’ pace and differentiated academic needs. We start with a free academic assessment to determine accurate student placement as the foundation of their individualized education and understanding their current academics and learning style. Academics are addressed in a comprehensive and cohesive manner with all components the clinic has to offer to provide an all around functional approach for the child’s life. Our classes take place in a small group setting with individualized academics, social skills infused within the academic group settings, and in collaboration with all of the other therapeutic providers treating the child so as to support a common plan with shared goals. Recipe

Oatmeal Pecan Waffles or Pancakes Ingredients For waffles: 1 C whole-wheat flour ½ C quick-cooking oats 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp sugar ¼ C unsalted pecans, chopped 2 large eggs, separated (for pancakes, see note) 1½ C fat-free (skim) milk 1 Tbsp vegetable oil

For fruit topping: 2 C fresh strawberries, rinsed, stems removed, and cut in half (or substitute frozen strawberries, thawed) 1 C fresh blackberries, rinsed (or substitute frozen blackberries, thawed) 1 C fresh blueberries, rinsed (or substitute frozen blueberries, thawed) 1 tsp powdered sugar

Directions 1. Preheat waffle iron. 2. Combine flour, oats, baking powder, sugar, and pecans in a large bowl. 3. Combine egg yolks, milk, and vegetable oil in a separate bowl, and mix well. 4. Add liquid mixture to the dry ingredients, and stir together. Do not overmix; mixture should be a bit lumpy. 5. Whip egg whites to medium peaks. Gently fold egg whites into batter (for pancakes, see note below). 6. Pour batter into preheated waffle iron, and cook until the waffle iron light signals it’s done or steam stops coming out of the iron. (A waffle is perfect when it is crisp and well-browned on the outside with a moist, light, airy and fluffy inside.) (Or make pancakes.) 7. Add fresh fruit and a light dusting of powdered sugar to each waffle, and serve.

Tip: For pancakes, do not separate eggs.

Mix whole eggs with

milk and oil, and eliminate steps 4 and 5.

Digatherm & K-Laser

Improve diagnosis for your pets

T

he hardest part about diagnosing and treating animals is that they can’t communicate what’s wrong. We as veterinarians have to use the information gathered from the history that is given by the owner and the physical examination to determine either a diagnosis and treatment, or if more tests are needed to help get to an accurate diagnosis. Thankfully, we have a new diagnostic tool that allows veterinarians to see increased areas of heat in the soft tissues with a non-invasive test called the Digatherm that measures the temperature of the tissues that are seen with a thermal camera. Charlie, who is a 9 year old terrier mix, presented to me with a history of not eating normally and having a little diarrhea. After further discussion, I found that he was also hiding and not really wanting to jump up on the couch. During my physical examination, I could not identify any definitive areas of pain. I explained to Charlie’s owner that I suspected with his history that he was painful, however I could not pinpoint where his pain was coming from. They allowed me to do a Digatherm exam so that I could see if anything looked unusual. Luckily, during the exam, I was able to identify a very focal area of heat that indicated that the dog had some pain and inflammation in the lower back. The inflammation that was seen was likely related to the muscles in the back that were inflamed. This could be caused by a muscle strain or some inflammation radiating down from a disc problem. He was not having any neurological problems so the best thing for us to do at this point was to do some pain medications, muscle relaxants and K-laser therapy.

Digatherm is a relatively newer diagnostic tool to veterinary medicine. It started in the equine industry to help determine if horses were ready to return to racing. Recently it has become a great tool for small animal diagnostics and has truly revolutionized our ability to diagnose and properly target treatment. Digaterm can identify areas of soft tissue injury, but can also identify areas with increased blood flow such as cancer. K-Laser therapy is a targeted therapy that is nicely paired with Digatherm. K-laser targets damaged tissue with specific wavelengths of light. The light energy passes through the skin at the cellular level, initiating the body’s natural regenerative process. Laser therapy accelerates wound healing, and reduces pain, stiffness, swelling, and spasms. K-laser therapy can stimulate all cell types, including soft tissue, ligaments, cartilage, and nerves. K-laser therapy is painless, FDA approved, and is a scientifically proven treatment for a variety of conditions. Each session is anywhere from 30 seconds up to 9 minutes and is usually performed over a period of several sessions with intervals of a few days to weekly, depending on the severity of the injury. Charlie was treated with anti-inflammatory medication, a muscle relaxant and he had a series of 6 K-laser treatments over a period of 3 weeks and he made a full recovery. With the combination of Digatherm and K-laser, we can dramatically improve our accuracy of diagnosis and target the problem area in a way that greatly speeds recovery for many of our patients.
