What can 3D mammograms do for your peace of mind?

© Baptist Health 2020

Breast imaging technique makes breast cancer easier to see and reduces false positives. 3D mammography (digital breast tomosynthesis) is approved by the FDA and is the standard of care for breast cancer screening. And it’s available at Baptist Medical Center South. 3D screening mammography is different from the traditional 2D mammograms: • 3D mammography makes it easier to see the layers of breast tissue, allowing for better cancer detection. • 2D mammograms take only one picture across the entire breast, in two directions: top to bottom and side to side. Unclear or suspicious findings from 2D views could increase the need for additional imaging and also lead to more false positives.

3D mammography is designed to overcome these limitations. The technology moves in an arc around the breast to take X-rays from many angles in seconds. A computer quickly assembles the pictures to produce clear, highly-focused 3D images. This allows the radiologist to view the entire breast, layer by layer, for a more accurate screening — especially important for anyone with dense breast tissue or patients with an increased risk of breast cancer. Ask your doctor to recommend a facility that offers 3D mammograms. Or simply contact Baptist South, now offering easy-to-schedule appointments for 3D screening mammograms.

Holiday Wines &Foods ...Pairings & Suggestions

A Des tiny ’s CWM C hef Hibiscus Cranber r y Shortcake m a e r C e c I

by Steve Lourie, Owner at Coastal Wine Market & Tasting Room.

s we start planning to gather around the dining room table (or computer screen) to celebrate this holiday season with our friends and loved ones, we mustn’t forget the two things that not only bring people together, but have been quintessential in getting us through 2020 - food and wine. However different the celebrations may look, let Coastal Wine Market & tasting room help lighten the burden of the holiday shopping and with this brief tutorial on the best choices for your personal celebrations.

1 cup whole milk ¾ cup granulated sugar pinch salt 2 cups heavy cream 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract 1 can of Cranberry Preserves 2 cups of minced Cranberry Hibiscus Leaves 6 Shortcake shells 6 slices of lime 6 lime twists 1.In a medium bowl, use a hand mixer on low speed or whisk to combine the milk, sugar and salt until the sugar is dissolved. Stir in the heavy cream and vanilla. Add in cranberry Hibiscus leaves. Cover and refrigerate 1 to 2 hours, or overnight. 2.Turn on the Cuisinart® ice cream maker; pour the mixture into the frozen freezer bowl and let mix until thickened, about 15 to 20 minutes. The ice cream will have a soft, creamy texture. If a firmer consistency is desired, transfer the ice cream to an airtight container and place in freezer for about 2 hours. 3.Remove from freezer about 15 minutes before serving. 4.Scoop ice cream onto shortcake shells 5.Top with cranberry sauce, lime slice and garnish with lime twist 6.Enjoy!

Champagne

The delicious sparkling beverage that once popped open, becomes the celebration itself! When a bottle of champagne graces the room, everyone who is present knows what’s next, eyes widen, mouths water and knees buckle. Well perhaps it’s not THAT dramatic, but it certainly indicates the festivities are about to begin. Champagne is the perfect “party starter”. At CWM, we have several bubbly options that are sure to help get everyone talking. One in particular, Buena Vista Winery La Victoire Brut Rose, is just the bottle that will kickstart any gathering. With aromas of rose petal, strawberry and Bing cherry, it’s an elegant wine that pairs perfectly with an array of cheeses, lighter seafoods, or can easily stand alone as a perfect aperitif.

Pinot Noir

This lighter red wine tends to be the ideal “gift” for the holiday table invitee. It is a solid “gate-

way” red that nestles comfortably between Chardonnay and Cabernet. Pinot Noir pairs elegantly with a litany of dishes that include (but are not limited to) Turkey, Pot Roast, Ham, Salmon and more. One of CWM’s top customer choices in Pinot Noir is Lyric from Etude Wines. This wine jumps out of the glass with aromas of blackberries and cola and offers a tantalizing palate rife with cinnamon, clove and allspice.

Port

Aww – the perfect finish! One of the more underappreciated and underutilized holiday wines. Just as Champagne helps kick things off, Port is the perfect climax to a final festive course. Not only can it easily accompany any of the delectable desserts brought to the dinner table, it can also accompany holiday frivolity and needed relaxation on the couch or the lanai post-dinnertime. One port in particular that could excite even the most discriminate of taste buds is Warre’s Otima 10 Year Tawny Port. This is a silky offering with a beautiful caramel color offering expressive notes of brown sugar, hazelnut and fig. A Message From The Vet by Dr. Deckard, DVM, Pets R Family

The Importance of Year-Round Tick Prevention

D

id you know that external parasites are a threat to your pet all year long? In certain areas of the US, there may be less of them during colder months, but common parasites like fleas, mosquitoes and ticks can persist even through cold weather, especially in Florida. In fact, some species of ticks are actually more prevalent here in the cooler months. There are many brands of parasite preventions on the market today, but not all of them contain tick protection, and many people are not aware of that! Protecting your pet against ticks is equally as important as protecting them from heartworms and fleas because dogs and cats are very susceptible to tick bites. The diseases that are carried by ticks may also put you at risk, as many of these diseases infect humans! A tick’s life cycle is in 4 stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. After hatching from the eggs, they must have a blood meal from a host at every life stage to survive, making them unique in that they can carry and spread disease during any life stage. If their host has a bloodborne infection, ticks will ingest it during feed-

ing and transmit it to the next host in their next life-stage, and because of their multiple-hosts, it’s not uncommon for a tick to be carrying several different disease-causing pathogens. The most common tick disease we hear about is Lyme disease. However, lyme disease does have a vaccine for dogs, so if you feel your dog is at risk, or if you plan to travel to the Carolinas or further north, it’s recommended that you vaccinate your dog immediately prior.

Certain female ticks can also produce a toxin in their saliva that causes Tick Paralysis – which affects motor neurons of dogs and cats and can cause a progressive paralysis usually 5-9 days after attachment. This can also be very serious and life-threatening if the paralysis progresses to respiratory failure, but in most pets, the tick is discovered, removed, and typically with supportive care the pet will begin to recover within hours of removal of the tick.

The diseases we see most commonly in Florida include: Erlichia, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Babesia, and Anaplasmosis. There are other diseases that primarily affect cats: Hemobartonella and Cytauxzooan. Almost all tick diseases present in your pet the same way: joint pain, fevers, neurologic symptoms, and anemia – which can mimic many other disease processes. Most veterinarians have a rapid in-house test that can detect antibodies to some of the most common diseases, but many times more tests are needed before a true diagnosis can be made. Many tick-borne diseases can be very serious if not treated promptly, and in some cases they cause a life-threatening anemia or loss of platelets. The cytauxzooan organism that infects domestic cats (also called bobcat fever) is almost 100% fatal within days of contracting it from the tick bite.

So how do you keep your pet from contracting these diseases? Obviously removing ticks once you see them is very important, but prevention is the absolute best thing you can do for your pet. Depending on the species of the tick, they can take from 10 minutes to 24 hours to transmit disease once they bite your pet, so if you wait until you see one, it may already be too late! Most quality tick preventions begin working on your pet quickly, and often will kill the tick before it has a chance to transmit disease if used as directed. However, not all tick products are good quality, and many of them that are used for dogs are toxic and life-threatening to cats, so never use the same product on both without consulting a Veterinarian. Your vet will always recommend the best and safest forms of tick prevention for your pets!
