Here's a New Year's resolution for all members: get involved! The Chapter is as strong as the participation in events and planning. Jump in now with Winter Meeting: staff the registration and hospitality booths, be a dinner buddy, offer a tour of your library. Think about the various committees we have that work all year to plan programs, work with students, put out the newsletter, promote us to the community, and so on. Another way to get to know the Chapter: come to the reception at the Library of Congress! It will be a smashing way to start 1998. New members will be welcomed by ... well, not old members, but by the longer-term members. And everyone will have a chance to talk with the candidates for Association office as well as the incumbents, which has been for some time a feature of our New Members reception. Everyone will have received the Association ballot by then, but may not yet have voted. As we look forward, we also look back in sadness. Paula Lovas, who preceded me as President, left us a legacy of work well done and a sparkling attitude of can-do and zest for life. We will be setting up a memorial of some kind for her, but haven't quite settled on what it should be. If you have suggestions, please email me at ebriscoe@ngs.org. In the meantime, I encourage you to send your recollections of Paula for posting on the web page and inclusion in Chapter Notes to Marisa Urgo, sophia@mindspring.com.

Winter Meeting Needs You Local Arrangements for this month's SLA Winter Meeting and Winter Education Conference are firming up nicely, BUT WE STILL NEED A FEW GOOD WOMEN AND MEN!! If you can help us welcome our out-of-town guests to Washington as a Registration or Hospitality volunteer, please contact Laura Foy, Registration team leader, at lfoy@hfma.org or (202) 2962920, x614; or Mandy Baldridge, Hospitality team leader, at telesec@clark.net or (301)9292665. The Winter Meeting runs January 21-24, and the Winter Education Conference runs January 25-27. Both meetings will be held at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Crystal City.

DC News Group Session on News Library Temps: How to find them, How to keep them around, How to be one Date: Monday January 12 Time: 12:30pm-2pm (leave when you need to) Place: The Washington Post, 1150 15th St NW Finding good temporary librarians with News Library experience can be a constant struggle. How do DC area News libraries find temps? Some librarians temp before finding a full-time news library job. Some experienced full-timers shift gears to work part-time. Is temping a viable option for you in this market? Join us for a roundtable discussion about temping in the DC area. Mary Talley from Libary Management Systems and Mandy Baldridge from Telesec are planning to attend. Several former and current News Library temps will attend also.

Please pass the word to any News Library temps and would-be temps you know. One of the former temps attending will be Ruth Leonard of the Washington Post News Library. Starting January 1, Ruth will be the new Chair of the News Group. This will be a good opporutunity to meet Ruth, if you don't already know her, and give her your ideas for the future of the News Group. The Washington Post building is near the MacPherson Square Metro stop on the Blue and Orange Lines, or Farragut North on the Red Line. Meet in the lobby of the Washington Post by 12:25. Food and drink will be provided. E-mail your reservation to rrobinson@npr.org by January 5. Space is limited to 20.

Special Note for Those Planning to Attend the Library of Congress Reception Dave Shumaker, Winter Meeting Liaison, dshumaker@mitre.org If you've registered for the January 22 reception at the Library of Congress, please check the Chapter website (www.capcon.net/dcsla) in the week before the reception for an update on arrangements. Final determination of whether we will use the ground floor or first floor entrance was not available at press time. Also, a clarification: in the December issue we stated that guided tours would be available during the reception. In fact, Library of Congress docents will be on hand to interpret the exhibits, but guided tours as such will not be offered. If you're still thinking about registering, remember these important points: Space is extremely limited, so register early. (It may already be too late.) There will be absolutely NO on-site registration. Registration is limited to Chapter members; we cannot accommodate guests. See last month's issue of Chapter Notes for full details http://www.capcon.net/dcsla/dec97.html. In Memory of Paula Lovas (1941-1997) By Eileen Rourke, 1995-1996 DC/SLA President Regretfully, Paula Lovas passed away on November 23. As most of you know, Paula served as the DC Chapter's 1996-1997 President and was still on the Board as Past President when she died. I had the privilege of working closely with Paula over the past few years as she succeeded me as President of the Chapter. The last time I saw Paula was in May at our annual banquet. Ironically, it was just berfore she got the news that she needed surgery and would be unable to attend the

Seattle conference. Paula looked vibrant and, even looking back, it's hard to believe that she was ill. I recall her commitment to our chapter members during her tenure as President, which we are fortunate that she was able to complete. I will remember Paula as a lady of graciousness, but also as someone who wasn't afraid to try new things. When faced with a serious illness, she met it with the same dignity that she brought to her professional life. We will miss Paula greatly. I know this is especially true for Estelle Alexander, who was a close friend and colleague of Paula's at AARP. Estelle visited Paula recently, which I know meant a great deal to Paula, along with all the cards she received from the Board and members. In her memory, donations may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice House, 10450 Mullan Rd., Missoula, MT 59802.
