A message to our Community Last year, we asked you to help turn hope into a reality for our neighbors in need. Now, it is with heartfelt appreciation that we say thank you for being a leader among the volunteers and contributors who stepped up to that challenge through your generosity in the 2007 Campaign and your ongoing commitment to your local United Way. Together, we are accomplishing more than we could alone.

Despite the continued challenges of our current economic transition, with your support, we were able to maintain the current level of funding to the network of services and the areas of most concern to you in 2008. Our focus in the three key areas of Education, Income, and Health is allowing us as a community to align our resources in ways that are making a significant difference. Through the great work of our United Way Partner Agencies and our community initiatives, we are a making a significant positive impact in the Dayton region. This year we are energized – and hope you are too – by our compelling new brand and its message. LIVE UNITED is a call to action to GIVE… ADVOCATE…and VOLUNTEER. Last year, 259,253 people living in Montgomery, Greene and Preble Counties were helped by a United Way-funded program. The number of local citizens turning to the Partner Agencies for help has increased by more than 20,000 each year for the past two years. That’s why your generosity truly makes a difference and your continued support is so vital.

2007-2008 Community Impact Highlights
Positive Youth Development
Your local United Way is dedicated to creating opportunities for a better life for everyone by focusing on education, income, and health. These three building blocks for a better life translate into our three Priority Areas: Positive Youth Development, Financial Stability Leading to Independence, and Health and Well-Being of Individuals and the Community. The following is a synopsis of our success in these areas during the past year. To help ensure that all of our local youth succeed in school and life: • We continued to gain momentum in our youth initiative to build the assets of all our local youth. Assets are both external support systems, like positive adult role models, and internal qualities, like encouraging creativity and fostering motivation. Our work included co-sponsoring the second annual Great Kids Great Communities Conference on Youth in October and training school personnel and others who work with kids in the 40 assets model. • As part of the coalition working to improve the quality of early care and education in Montgomery County, United Way and the Dayton Metro Library are leading the team focused on outreach to families and informal care providers. United Way also installed five Born Learning Interactive Trails throughout the region as a public service for parents and caregivers of young children. • United Way was asked to facilitate a meeting with a dozen concerned parents and school personnel to reduce teen drug and alcohol use in areas where affluence contributes to the problem. Initial conversations grew into a formal task force with participants from the schools, city offices, and police departments from seven communities. United Way provided funding for an in-depth study of the problem and best practices. The results were shared with each of the communities who have now formed a broad-based coalition.

Financial Stability
To help hardworking families regain financial stability leading to independence: • United Way established the Dislocated Worker Assistance Fund and made grants to Partner Agencies for emergency food and other basic needs including housing, transportation, and utilities, as well as additional GED classes and case management to assist with re-entering the labor force. Outreach workers met with more than 6,000 dislocated workers to connect them with community resources to help cope with and manage the loss of income through job retraining, financial counseling, and other services including temporary assistance for basic needs. • We continued our Home Foreclosure Prevention partnership, referring more than 1,800 callers to HelpLink 2-1-1 services which includes foreclosure assistance, mortgage assistance, and other basic needs including emergency food, utilities, and medical assistance. • United Way helped increase awareness and usage of the Earned Income Tax Credit this year. More than 11,000 local residents called United Way HelpLink 2-1-1’s special recorded hotline to learn about free local tax preparation sites and the federal economic stimulus payments. In addition, 2,473 callers opted to speak to HelpLink staff for more information and 1,332 of the callers were set up with appointments at the free sites.
Health and Well-Being
To improve the health and well-being of individuals and our community: • United Way made a special grant from the Emerging Needs Fund to Reach Out to help the clinic meet soaring requests for free medical care and emergency prescriptions. • We are working with others on the serious challenges of access and affordability and joined local, state, and national efforts to support the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

Brian lent his name to the campaign because he believes teamwork matters when you’re playing basketball…and when you want to find lasting solutions to community problems. United Way uses the team approach to get to the heart of problems – supporting a network of services to meet critical needs and focusing on the underlying causes. “United Way is about supporting our local community. We are a local team, and we all work together to support our local community,” Coach Gregory said. Contributions to the 2007-2008 campaign totaled $11,812,600. Despite the rapidly-changing base due to continued shifts and challenges in our local economy, the campaign was up slightly over the prior year and stable for the third consecutive year. This is a tremendous accomplishment and the third straight year we have overcome losses between three-quarters and a million dollars. While $11,800,405 was pledged the prior year, by the time the campaign was launched in the summer of 2007 the base was only $11 million. We actually saw growth from current and new contributors of more than $800,000 this year. Thank you to Coach Gregory and all of the United Way campaign volunteers – especially the dedicated individuals and teams who run the United Way Campaign at their workplace – for their commitment and accomplishments.

You might have begun supporting United Way by earning a red feather pin for collecting dimes in grade school. You may have given through payroll deduction for years at your workplace. Before the widespread use of computers, however, United Way did not receive the names of our donors. Companies collected the pledges, and then passed them on to United Way as one combined gift.
