A Reflection from the Campaign Chair

reinventing HOPE

I came to the area from New York to attend the University of Dayton and made this community my home after graduation. I’ve been fortunate in my family and business life, so for me it’s all about giving back. United Way is the best way to give back to this community that has given me so much. As a long-time contributor, I’ve increased my giving as my means have allowed and am now proud to call myself a member of the Tocqueville Society. I have my business reasons for giving to United Way. United Way is focused on community issues. Often people need help from more than one agency, and United Way serves as that clearinghouse. Helping the 76 Partner Agencies makes sense. And, supporting United Way will probably save us on taxes and make us a stronger community in the long run. Where would we be without United Way? That is a scary proposition! Fortunately, leaders like you recognize the value United Way brings to the quality of life in our community and our willingness to give generously to help United Way help our neighbors in need. With your continued support and a solid framework for change in place, our local United Way can be an essential agent for positive change in this community. Thank you for reinventing hope for more than 260,000 children, adults and seniors touched by the United Way each year.

Improving Lives and Our Community for 95 Years United Way’s local roots go back nearly a century. Based on the successful community-wide campaign to raise money for relief efforts following the Great Dayton Flood of 1913, civic leaders decided to apply the same concept of federated fund raising to meet the ongoing health and human service needs of the community. The Federation of Charity and Philanthropy was organized in 1914 with ten cooperating agencies: Associated Charities, Association for the Blind, Boy Scouts, Dayton Day Nursery, Humane Society, Milk Commission, Playgrounds and Gardens Association, Salvation Army, Tuberculosis Committee, and Visiting Nurses Association. The organization became the Dayton Community Chest in 1919. Its purpose was “to foster the moral, mental and physical welfare of the community to seek to harmonize the efforts of civic, charitable and philanthropic organizations for the sake of civic unity and greater efficiency. The name was changed to the United Fund of the Dayton Area in 1965 and United Way in 1974. While the name and some of the needs have changed over time, the essence of the organization has remained the same -- to garner the collective power of the community to improve lives and strengthen the region.

To meet human service needs and find long-term solutions in the Dayton region by engaging the greatest number of donors, leaders, and volunteers and partnering to advance the common good.

Mission

Vision To be a national model for community engagement generating financial and voluntary contributions to meet local needs and make lasting improvement to our quality of life.

Your United Way – Positioned for Greater Impact United Way of the Greater Dayton Area began a transformation in 2009 when the majority of stakeholders voiced concern over a potential merger with Cincinnati. The study did not identify desired cost savings, and there were no assurances that additional resources would be available to meet our region’s skyrocketing needs. The volunteer and staff leadership knew that a complete overhaul of our local United Way was needed to position the organization to respond to the realities of the new economy. We started by driving down overhead through budget cuts and cost reductions of more than $1.5 million, benchmarking to similar cities, and listening to the community. Based on input from an online survey open to all stakeholders, individual interviews, and a series of three forums involving 55 community leaders, the resulting framework for change contains five goals: 1. Focus on solutions to priority needs. 2. Enhance volunteer and leadership engagement. 3. Develop new fundraising models. 4. Inform the community on the impact made by donations. 5. Operate a lean, financially sound organization.

reinventing HOPE

Our success moving forward lies in strategic partnerships and engaging more donors, leaders, and volunteers. We will be working more closely with county government, agencies, and others to streamline efforts, reduce duplication, and increase our impact. We adopted a new model to work toward shared outcomes that do not just address needs but also find long-term solutions. The United Way Community Impact Model combines traditional investment in quality programs and a narrowed focus to tackle community problems. United Way will continue to make a direct impact on needs that will always be with us…such as child care and afterschool programs, support services for seniors and persons with disabilities, and disaster response and preparedness. Now, in addition, we will engage the resources and assets in the community to tackle a need that can be diminished… such as improving school readiness scores or high school graduation rates. United Way advances the common good by creating opportunities for a better life for all. Our focus is on education, income and health, because these are the building blocks for a good quality of life. We recruit people and organizations from all across the community who bring the passion, expertise and resources needed to get things done. If there is a tear anywhere in the fabric of our community, if any part is struggling, we are all affected and we all need to act. To Live United means recognizing that we are all linked. We invite you to continue to be a part of the change. 4

Our Board Our board members, led by Gary Auman, have once again worked tirelessly to lead our efforts in raising and allocating funds. These members have given of their time, talents, and resources to support the campaign, manage the budget, provide ideas and guidance. Their contributions are invaluable and we sincerely thank them for all they do.

Our Dedicated Volunteers

reinventing HOPE

Winston Churchill once said, “You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.” Our devoted volunteers have certainly enriched their lives and those they have helped through their generous donation of time. Our success in helping our neighbors in need is dependent upon both financial support and the willingness of these dedicated volunteers to lend a hand. We appreciate everything they do to enrich the lives of us all.

Our Generous Supporters: The Leadership Circle Dayton’s history is rich with examples of great inventors working to make life easier and the world more accessible to us all. That tradition of wanting to improve lives continues through individuals who share their success by giving to others. This sharing spirit is what allows United Way of the Greater Dayton Area to work in our community. Whether it is a $25 gift from a student or a $10,000 gift from one of our special philanthropists, we are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to our 2009-2010 campaign.

In Memory of a Leader United Way of the Greater Dayton Area mourns the loss of a legendary community leader. Frederick C. Smith was one of those rare gems whose impact and legacy will be felt by all of us for generations to come. As the president and CEO of the Huffy Corporation, Fred transformed the company into a nationally-recognized leader in bicycles and ancillary products. When he retired, he put those same skills to work on behalf of the entire Greater Dayton area. Fred’s involvement and leadership with United Way of the Greater Dayton Area took the organization to a new level in nonprofit leadership. Fred created what is now known as the Leadership Circle, and he was a founding member of United Way’s Tocqueville Society. The Smith-Moore Award, United Way’s highest level of volunteer recognition, was named in his honor for his time, effort and dedication to our community. Our community is a stronger, more vibrant place thanks to him. He was a true philanthropist who will be greatly missed. 12

Our Supporters: Loyal Contributors 25+ YEARS OF LOYAL CONTRIBUTIONS United Way of the Greater Dayton area gives special thanks and recognition to those individuals who have contributed to United Way and its forerunners – the Community Chest, Red Feather and United Fund – for 25 years or more. For decades, United Way did not receive the names of our donors. Companies collected the pledges and passed them on to United Way as one combined gift. Since we do not have records of individual giving reaching back more than 12 years, we ask loyal contributors to please make us aware of your wonderful history of generosity. If you feel your name should be on this list, please let us know by calling 937-225-3015.

Our Supporters: The Legacy Circle Our Legacy Circle members have arranged to perpetuate their giving for future generations. These gifts come in the form of bequests to United Way of the Greater Dayton Area in wills, insurance policies and memorials, among others. Our neighbors who find themselves in need will benefit from the generous planning of these thoughtful individuals. We thank these special members for considering future needs of those less fortunate in our community.

Employee and Corporate Giving Nearly 100 years ago, our community leaders realized the effectiveness of a single community-wide campaign in the form of the 1913 flood relief efforts. They then decided to apply that same approach to the ongoing needs of our community. Thus the tradition of one annual campaign for the local network of health and human services began. The following companies carried on that tradition by participating in the 2009-2010 campaign. These corporate gifts and employee workplace contributions are enabling United Way of the Greater Dayton Area and our partners to create opportunities for a better life for those in our community. Thank you!

“Our imagination is the only limit to what we can hope to have in the future”
