ALEX SCHOEN MEMORIAL FREE-THROW TROPHY
The Alex Schoen Trophy is given annually to the player who finishes the year with the highest free throw percentage (minimum of 50 free throws attempted). The trophy is named for Alex Schoen, Sr., the captain of the first University of Dayton basketball team. Schoen captained the 1903-04 team for St. Mary’s College, which later became UD. The Sharpenter Award is given annually to the top rebounder on the team. It is named after Hall of Famer Ted “Shorty” Sharpenter and is sponsored by his family. Sharpenter was a football and basketball standout at UD in the 1920s. Larry Schellenberg was twice the recipient of the John L. MacBeth Scholar-Athlete Award as well as an NCAA Postgraduate Scholar. With that kind of mind, he understood the value of protecting the ball: His 2.36 assists-to-turnover ratio remains a school record.
