UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON WOMEN’S SOCCER I ALWAYS dreamed of playing Division I collegiate soccer. The day I stepped on the University of Dayton campus, I knew I found my home. I owe an endless amount of thanks to Coach Tucker, and the University for giving me the opportunity to be a part of such an unbelievable program and school. My four years on campus as a Flyer hold many of my fondest memories. I remember the feeling Friday night stepping onto Baujan. I remember the intense, competitive 2v2 before every game. I remember the trips, the team dinners, the meetings, the fitness tests. I remember the parents’ tailgates and support, even when we were across the country. I remember the championships won, the NCAA tourney games and the tough losses. I remember the blood, the ripped jerseys, the sweat, the tears and the laughter. But most of all, I remember the teammates and coaches I did this all with. I know I am blessed to have these experiences and memories so close to my heart. What an incredible group of people to support you, love you and believe in you! If anyone would tell me there was a better place to spend those four years of my life, I wouldn’t believe them. I wish with all my heart I could go back and do it again! It is with utmost pride, even today, that I am able to call myself Flyer.

Being a Dayton Flyer is something I will never forget. So many memories, both on and off the field, were sandwiched between the team/family picnic the first day I arrived on campus to the banquet following my senior year. Who can forget the road trips, the Baujan Field atmosphere, the competition and the success? Those things were like no other, but what I really took away from the program was the relationships and the camaraderie. Coach Tucker had (and still has) a knack for recruiting amazing players, but more importantly as it turns out, he recruited my best friends. Friends I will have for life who share a bond that’s difficult to describe – a kind of exclusivity that only we understand. - LIZ BROWN ROSE ‘03

AN EXPERIENCE THAT STAYS WITH YOU FOR LIFE

Whether it was the first day of preseason, a tough conditioning session, or gearing up for our first Sweet 16 appearance – there is not a memory from my years as part of the Dayton Women’s Soccer Program that I do not cherish. Dayton Soccer is more than having the opportunity of playing and competing in the sport you love at the Division I level. It is about playing alongside friends and for coaches that will stand by you long after your days of playing defense and scoring goals have passed. The opportunities that I have had because of my involvement with the Flyer family are second to none. Being a contributor to the Dayton Soccer tradition is one my greatest accomplishments and the skills that I developed during those four years have contributed to the leader that I strive to be in my family and career today. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Coach Tucker for believing in my ability to contribute to this program and providing me with the opportunity to play and represent such the amazing community of UD. Go Flyers! - MEGAN MCKNIGHT MAHLE ‘01

The day I stepped on the University of Dayton campus, I knew I found my home. 7

I am forever grateful for the experiences I had while playing for the University of Dayton women’s soccer team. I respected Tucker as a coach and as the head of our program, but even more as a person. I knew him to be a wonderful father, grandfather and husband. I am inspired by Tucker’s commitment to his players, even after they have left his program. I’ve thought this so many times, but my time on the UD women’s soccer team is one of my most treasured experiences and memories. There are times when I think about it and I miss it, and I realize what I really miss are the people; my teammates, and coaches. There are things that you know will have to come to an end, so you try to savor each moment, and even though you are still a little sad when it’s over, you can look back and just be grateful you got to have that in your life. I am so grateful I had those four years as a Flyer! - SARAH WALKER GANTZ ‘01

The 2001 campaign came as a shock to many and a surprise to most. After a rocky 2-5 start, the Flyers rallied off an electrifying and then-school record 15-straight wins, carrying them all the way to the Sweet 16 of the Women’s College Cup. UD swept its conference slate, going a perfect 11-0-0. UD blanked its first and second round opponents in the NCAA Tournament - Maryland, 1-0, and Miami, 2-0, to reach round three. The Cinderella Flyers finally met their match, falling 3-1 to #3 UCLA in Los Angeles in the Sweet 16. UD ended with a No. 16 national ranking. Tucker’s efforts earned him his first A-10 Coach of the Year honor. Tucker has a long tradition of molding his studentathletes into winners both on the field, and more importantly, in the classroom. Under Tucker, the Flyers have captured 10 consecutive Team Academic Awards (team GPA of 3.0 or higher) from the NSCAA, while eight Flyers have earned Academic All-District recognition and four have been named Academic All-America. Former Flyer Shannon Kuhl, who graduated in 2003, was selected First Team Academic All-America in back-to-back seasons. Amanda Gallow was a second team selection in 2008. The team has had 14 selected to the A-10 All-Academic Team, with Stephanie Weisenfeld (2002) and Megan McKnight (2001) being chosen as the Atlantic 10’s Student-Athlete of the Year. Tucker goes back to the roots of the UD women’s soccer program. His daughter Lori played for, while

2009 YEAR IN REVIEW

The 2008 squad played with true grit and poise on its way to a 15-6-1 record and helping Tucker reach a huge milestone. The Flyers earned a league record 13th consecutive trip to the Atlantic 10 Women’s Soccer Championship and dealt Fordham a 2-1 loss in the semifinals to give Tucker his 200th career victory. He went on to be named the Ohio Coach of the Year.

Flyers also took the nation’s longest winning streak - a team-record 20 games - into the Big Dance.

FLYERS

Dayton women’s soccer has a rich history and the 2009 squad added so much to the lore. Besides earning the NCAA berth and First Round win, the Flyers went 15-0-6 during the regular season and A-10 Tournament championship, marking the first ever unbeaten season for the program. And along the way the Flyers won the Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament titles. The Flyers played in eight overtime matches, and broke the school record for shutouts with 15. Both the offense and defense flourished. Dayton scored 49 goals, ranking them 27th in the nation in scoring offense (2.13) and the defense was second in goals against average (.406), and fifth in save percentage (.886).

How do you deal with the success of last year and having a target on your back this season? As much success as we had a year ago, we felt like we let some games get by, especially with those ties (six); we felt like we should have won every one of them. We don’t like to lose. That one loss from the NCAA tournament (3-1 to Virginia Tech in the NCAA Second Round) still doesn’t sit too well. Our goal is to win every game. I think we will at least be in the mix to do that. We want to go farther than we did last year.

UNIVERSTIY COACHES

What are the goals of the 2010 Flyer women’s soccer team? Always to get to the NCAA Tournament. Always try to win our league and win the league tournament as well. Beyond that, we reset our goals if we get to that point. When we talk program goals it’s always to be as good as we can be and we think we’re good enough to get to a pretty high level this year.

FLYERS HISTORY

Describe all your options at the goalkeeper position. We have four goalkeepers and they are awesome how they push each other and work so well together. Jackie Thompson goes out and gives us such a valuable tool in training. Our newest keeper, Jordin Melchert has an incredible upside. She is so athletic and just pulls off some incredible saves. Lisa (Rodgers) was unlucky last year. She set herself apart early and then was injured. Lisa has a great kicking game and is very confident with her feet. She is really quick and comes off the line well. She has the total respect and confidence of the defenders. Katherine earned that last year after being thrown to the fire. She has great hands and is wonderful at judging crosses. She has had tremendous growth in her kicking game.

2009 YEAR IN REVIEW

How has your defense been so successful and how can the trend continue? We’re fortunate enough to have a whole group of people who play well together; that complement each other and who are all very good.

The Flyer defense returns everyone that helped post a school-record 15 shutouts last season. Can they raise the bar? That’s asking a lot. We’re going to be awful hard to attack and I think the defense will have a lot of success. We’re healthy and we’ve got more numbers in the back with people we’re really comfortable with. Can we be as good or better? Absolutely, we can. We’ll see.

INTRODUCTION

2010 SEASON PREVIEW IN TUCKER’S WORDS

At center back you have to have someone who can organize and read the game. Junior Kelsey Miller is phenomenal. She is going to have a huge year. Kathleen Beljan is that quick, wonderful defender who is also great at getting into the attack. At our other center back we have a couple of options. We were fortunate that Jerica DeWolfe was able to play some there in the spring. Out wide right, Alli Giner has been tremendous for us. She is just as good as any defender in the league and better than any of them at getting forward and attacking out of there. Alysha Mallon can play either side equally well which is a great weapon to have. Kathleen, being a left-footer, mans the left side. We’ve also worked Emily Kenyon back there too, either central or wide. We have tons of great options, defensively. Megan Scharer will play some as an outside back or mid. She can play anywhere and do well. Nicole Peterson, our transfer, just started playing this week and she looks good. 11

2010 SEASON PREVIEW IN TUCKER’S WORDS

Talk about your midfield and what they bring. Colleen Williams is an attacking midfield player. She has wonderful vision so she can find people with the ball. She’s very comfortable getting into the attack, going to goal and finishing the attack herself. Behind her last year, mainly in a defensive midfield role, was Emily Kenyon. Sarah Senoyuit, as a freshman, will be able to step into that spot. She does everything well, plus she’s 5-10. She wins balls in the air consistently and makes us better in the air. That enables us to get Kenyon into the attack. She is a very good attacker and she hasn’t seen much of that role until this year. She also has the great flip throw, which is a weapon in its own right.

12

Tori Oelschlager was, probably, our best player in the spring overall. She really took from being a central player, to a wide midfield player and ran with it. She has a chance to have a big year and has already scored some nice goals in training. Kelly Blumenschein can play middle, she can play wide, she can play up top; she’s just a really good, quick attacking player. She will be a big part of what we do in the attack. We have tons of options in the midfield among our newcomers. Just about all of them are capable of playing in a lot of different spots. What can we expect from your forwards? Juliana Libertin is a high school allAmerican. She has played primarily in the back but we loved the thought of her playing up top. She is really quick and confident and is a great finisher. Kelly will also be in the mix. We had a huge improvement from Josie Grant. She is so strong and physical. She is a little bit like a Mac (Lauren MacCormick) in that she can hold up the ball and she can’t be knocked off it. Josie is going to do well in that role. It’s a whole wave of freshmen after that. Steph Emery started really strong but has been out with an injury. Maggie Murnane has scored huge goals for her club team and she is doing well here. Andrea Todak, at almost 6-2, is an incredibly big target for us up top, and yet really skillful. Whoever we have in the game, I am confident we’ll get a good attack out of them.

How important is it to have everyone back on the coaching staff this season? It’s great to have everyone back. We have a great feel and everyone has strengths in different areas and when we bring it all together it’s a great staff. Sergio (Gonzalez) is our goalkeeper trainer and does a good job overall. Tania (Armellino) has such a great rapport with the girls. Along with that, she’s played at a high level and she understands the game. Coach D (George Demetriades) is like the grandpa and can light up everyone’s day. I feel confident about our staff and what we can bring our players to enable them to be at their best. What are the best reasons to come to a Flyer soccer game at Baujan Field? We are an athletic, active team. We play with great pace and great skill. We’ll be hard to break down defensively. If a team gets into the final third and we win the ball we’ll be able to transition into the attack very well. We’ll be exciting to watch. The atmosphere is tremendous. Baujan Field is a great facility and a great place to watch a game. I hope people come. I want to encourage the students, fans and community to come out and support us. We have some high program goals and they can really help us attain those. We need the support of the students, faculty, staff and community to help us get where we need to be.

2009 YEAR IN REVIEW

Stacey Martin left this Earth too soon. On March 28, 1998, she passed away during an exhibition match at Baujan Field. Martin, a tenacious defender, was named Second Team All-Atlantic 10 in 1997. In her memory, the Flyers have put the team’s leadership award in her name.

BAUJAN FIELD

THE HOME OF DAYTON SOCCER SINCE BECOMING THE EXCLUSIVE HOME TO UD SOCCER, BAUJAN FIELD HAS GROWN INTO ONE OF THE TOP SOCCER VENUES IN THE COUNTRY.

Baujan Field, has undergone nearly $1.2 million in renovations over the past five years. It is recognized as one of the nation’s most unique collegiate stadiums. The facility boasts a wellmaintained natural grass surface with an irrigation system as well as a lighting system, allowing for a great atmosphere for night games. Baujan Field has played host to a number of postseason soccer events. The Atlantic 10 Women’s Soccer Championship was hosted in 1998, 2002 and again in 2009 when the Flyers advanced to the second round on PKs against No. 25 Marquette. The Atlantic 10 Men’s Soccer Championship was held here in 1996, 1999 and most recently in 2007. A first-round match of the 1999 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship called Baujan Field home as the Flyers advanced with a 3-2 win over Evansville. The Flyer men’s soccer team has twice played NCAA Play-In games at the historic venue in 1997 and 1998.
